Diner Reviews
  • "A tough reservation to get on a weekend, but well worth the wait. Walk-ins should not shy away for a late lunch - there were seats open during our meal. The Oysters were fantastic and fresh. The fish tacos and fish and chips were amazing. The key lime pie at the end was perfect. The service was awesome - we were given recommendations and suggestions on what would be enough for our group. I will be going back and would recommend to anyone that likes great seafood. Overall a great time."

  • "We had heard rave reviews; 3 of us had lunch ...great server, Ashley, freshest ,tastiest oysters ever, delicious black cod, beet salad started was great and the fish tacos too...but, the clam chowder was too thin and the dungennes crab very small. Key lime pie was declared best ever,,I loved the rolls!"

  • "Ever since Watergrill, we have always been keen on Chef Lefevre's take on seafood. FWD did not disappoint and as always, his play on the modern and old school style menu selections gives FWD a twist of the best of both worlds. Will definitely keep returning here since we feel that it is the best seafood restaurant in the Southbay. Easy commute."

  • "the oysters were great could have had oysters and martini's all night. The bartender is great. squash rools, chowder and octopus were as good as hyped. Also had the pasta and some salads which were excellent"

  • "Wonderful meal to carry with you well beyond to sitting. Will look forward to another visit. Great selection of on tap brews and a by the glass wine list. Really enjoyed the oysters."

  • "Only down side is that it is always so packed and you have to make a reservation a month or 2 in advanced"

  • "we started with the dozen oyster sampler (one better than the other) loved the garlic kale! the octopus was the only okay dish in our order. but the highlight was the yellowtail tacos...would definitely come back for more sampling on this incredible menu"

  • "I would love to know the answer to why oysters taste better here than anywhere else in Southern Cal. They taste fresher, colder, cleaner. On my recent visit, in addition to the oysters and crabcake, we also went for the shrimp po boy. Wow! Was that good. Oh, they also make great cocktails. Also love the casual beach ambiance. Everything just fits so well."

  • "Finally got a res here for my Bday. Fun lively place. Got oyster sample to start. Server very helpful as we were newbies. Shared crab cake, diver scallops ,and lobster pot pie all were spot on. My only tiny issue was our bowl (not cup) of clam chowder only had 5 clams in it and mostly potatoes. Flavor was good though."

  • "It was our first time here & we loved it. I booked a reservation almost 3 weeks in advance (due to their limited capacity) but it was worth it. The drinks were delicious, the service was friendly & attentive, & the food was excellent! We started with the oyster sampler which had a lovely presentation, was very tasty, & had several sauces. We also ordered the crab cakes which was full of lump crabmeat. Later we enjoyed the kale salad and French Fries which were crunchy & perfectly seasoned. Everything was wonderful, but the highlight was the $45 sampler from the raw bar which included raw oysters & clams, but also steamed lobster, prawns, & mussels. It was a splurge, but the quality spoke for itself. We recommend FWD & can't wait to return."

  • "Good seafood with lots of different and varied choices. Probably best selection of oysters in the South Bay. You must try the bread pudding for dessert."

  • "Servings are small but delicious and meticulously prepared and served. Clam chowder was unlike any we've tasted anywhere. Raw oysters and scallops tasted very fresh. Key lime pie was exceptionally good."

  • "4 of us ordered all different apps and main course items. Not one was bad, actually, all were great. However, if you don't like seafood this probably isn't the place for you. Very little on the menu that isn't seafood."

  • "Teeny tiny place but very delicious! Best if you like raw...oysters, clams, scallops etc. We shared a few plates, oysters to start-very good with a number of different sauces, hamachi was excellent, scallops were good and the black miso cod was just okay. Loved the key lime pie and the pretzel & chocolate bread pudding was good."

  • "I wouldn't call this a hidden gem because EVERYBODY is hearing about this place so it is hard to get in. The menu is fun & fresh and the food is all amazing so it's worth a visit. The challenge is that this place is TINY (we had a party of 5 and were squeezed into a 4-top) so it's not ideal for groups and you should definitely plan to make reservations. So, grab a friend or two and head over for a delicious meal!"

  • "We had the most wonderful, delicious lunch on Saturday. The variety of foods to choose from was impressive and all four of us really enjoyed the choices made. I had the fish and chips and would not hesitate to order it again. Also, the beer and wine list offered a varied selection. I would highly recommend Fishing With Dynamite."

  • "Amazing food. Great wine list. Top notch waitstaff. Oysters, stone crab, black sea bass and hamachi. The menu was extensive, a seafood lovers dream restaurant. Every small dish was delicious and perfectly presented. Looking forward to coming back soon."

  • "Loved having lunch here, will certainly return. Excellent service"

  • "Best oyster experience ever! The selection was very well curated. Get a full dozen for the whole experience, creamy, briny, milky and fresh as the sea. The other dishes were standout too! The octopus was perfectly smoky and so tender. The scallops were luxurious, made more so by the slice of uni that accompanied them. I'm not a fan of cod because it can be oily, but the eggplant soaked up all its oiliness perfectly. The staff were so accommodating. We were a party of 3 instead of the 4 we had booked for. They still seated us in a lovely corner by the window. My friends are not from Manhattan Beach so to be able to put our best foot forward on a day as perfect as the one we had, was fantastic! Thank you FWD, will most definitely be back!"

  • "Loved the food...wish there was more of it on the plates! The restaurant is charming (albeit small, so don't go with more than 4 - 6 people). The cocktails are innovative and delicious. Very gracious staff."

  • "Yelp had such high rating, but in realty its was a real disappointing experience Great location, bad service, bad food don't mind paying for something worthwhile, but 4 small slices of UNI doesn't cut it in this town..."

  • "My husband and I finally got a chance to come to FWD and it did not disappoint! We had the Queen Mary's which was excellent. It was fresh and delicious, and a deceptively large amount of food. We also had the clam chowder which we both enjoyed, and for dessert, we had the bread pudding (a must-have treat!). It is a small place and a bit loud, but we will definitely be coming back. Book your reservation early, though. Getting a table will be tough, but so worth it!"

  • "Fishing With Dynamite is so scrumptious. The shucked oysters and raw scallops with grapefruit are amazing! The squash rolls are addicting and the ambiance is hard to beat in the Southbay. A perfect seafood compliment for it's sister, MB Post!"

  • "Fishing with Dynamite is a solid addition to the South Bay, with a great menu, solid staff and overall a great experience - but - it is TINY! Make reservations well in advance and even then, be prepared to wait. The restaurant only has 3 tables that seat 4, the rest of the restaurant is two tops. Just something to keep in mind as we had a reservation this past weekend and waited almost 45 minutes for our table despite having a reservation. The hostess was wonderful as it was out of her hands - but just know, other diners won't always be the most considerate! Amazing oyster menu - and try to scallop ceviche!"

  • "Everything we had was unbelievable, we were so full but couldn't stop eating. Highly recommend you try it. It's all seafood so don't go if you don't like or are allergic."

  • "Where to begin? Tough, as everything we ate was superb. Oysters were freshest I have ever eaten. It is as if they had swum over. A big shout-out to the one who shucked those oysters as they were pristine. Clam Chowder captured the essence of the clams. Crabcake was all crab and minuscule filler Hamachi was as good as it gets Have never had better or more creatively-prepared Arctic Char Key lime pie was delicious Great service."

  • "I was looking forward to trying FWD based on great reviews. Food was ok, but not outstanding. The clam chowder was flavorful, but not hot enough. Crab cake was ok, but I did have a halibut frisee salad with soft egg that was really good. I ordered a glass of chardonnay for (what I thought was) $12.50 a glass, but when the bill came I was charged $22.00. When I asked the server about it, she stated that the 3 ounce flight was $12.50 and the 6 ounce flight was $22.00. I would have appreciated that information before I ordered it. She did take it off the bill, but she didn't seem all that happy about it. Won't be returning."

  • "this is the place for you! We came in and asked that the chef prepare some of his favorites for us and to keep bringing food out until we were full. Everything that was brought out was delicious!!! The service was excellent. At one point, there seemed to be just as many people waiting on us as there were patrons! I just wish the restaurant was bigger so it was easier to get a reservation. I am definitely making another reservation and coming back!"

  • "Was out in California for vacation and tried out this restaurant; I would highly recommend it for lunch. It was in a very scenic area in Manhattan Beach. The restaurant is quaint and vibrant at the same time. The food was very, very good. The menu is a bit limited but it will not stop you from finding quite a few good things to dine on."

  • "This place is such a fun place for a date night. Te good is both delicious as well as exciting and fun to eat. Music is upbeat and creates a fun environment that is romantic in the least cliche way possible. Save room for the pretzel bread pudding, you won't regret it."

  • "After a few hours of whale wathcing it was just to ironic to pass up the 3:30 reservation! Service left a lot to be desired. Although our server was very nice, she forgot several parts of our order even a 2nd time when requested and due to the time we were there, there were several empty tables so i would be very suspicious of what happens during high time. the hamachi was amazing, found the brown beans in several dishes puzzling but overall very good."
