Diner Reviews
  • "Made a reservation on OpenTable without knowing anything about the place/location (OpenTable is always great and easy to use). Expected this to be a high end place due to price, menu, reviews. Although the location is great looking out over the water, it is right in the middle of the strip with dive bars, tattoo shops, and other tourist fare. It looks like another bar from the outside. We sat at a wonderful reserved table but then weren't greeted by a server for 15 minutes (a huge pet peeve). A manager then came to take our order. Left there still not feeling like we ever had a server. Strange. The food was average, nothing stood out or was overwhelmingly wonderful. I would not return there for the price of the food, level of service, etc."

  • "Wait staff could use more help. Felt like it took awhile for waiter to come around and introduce himself and then almost seven minutes to get a drink. Food had a nice presentation taste was good. A little on pricey side of things though."

  • "We brought our family member from the Mainland in for dinner. Overall, everything was very good. The service was excellent as was the dessert. He ordered the lobster tail and shrimp, and for a large person, it wasn't enough food. A lot of money for a very small portion of lobster. Otherwise, we enjoyed ourselves greatly. Mahalo."

  • "Visited the big Island for 10 days and this was our favorite restaurant! Fish dishes are outstanding! Beautiful presentation and tasted delicious... We had the mahi, hebi, shrimp, ahi- all outstanding. The view from the restaurant is of the Harbour. Service attentive! This is a casual unassuming place with great service"

  • "My husband and I recently dined at the Fish Hopper, Kailua-Kona and had a very enjoyable dining experience. We started with the calamari appetizer, which was good but could have been a bit crisper. Our entrees were macadamia nut mahimahi for my husband and the lemon grass / ginger-crusted ono for me. Both were delicious, well-prepared and attractively presented. They were also a bit pricey for our budget ($27.95 each), but it was a special occasion and we splurged. The service was excellent - our server, Darci, was friendly, personable, knowledgeable and efficient. Having her as our server certainly added to the enjoyment of our evening. We will be back!"

  • "We had checked in person two days earlier and had the printout. When we arrived around 12:30 for a 1 pm reservation---12 people, with three children, after a funeral---no table and a large party where we were told they would put us & no other feasible possibility. First we were told "ten minutes." Half an hour later, we were told, "Just another ten minutes." Then the truth came out:that an employee made a mistake, and there was no record of our reservation. When we finally got seated at about 1:30 we were told staff were "off duty." Service was almost non-existent and the food arrived about 30 inutes later---almost cold. The kitchen staff were "off duty." The manager said he was "sorry" for the mix up but offered nothing"

  • "The specials were excellent and good portions. Service was attentive and the hostess asked us to wait a few minutes while she had a table with a great view of the water cleared for us. Great value."

  • "All of us ordered different kinds of fish-all good. Service was attentive. We requested a water view table on open table - they gave us a table overlooking Harbour. Dessert was ok only - skip it"

  • "Place was clean, had a great view and I was anxious to try some good ahi! We ordered and waited forever. Our entries arrived and...no ahi! Our waiter forgot to put in our appetizer. VERY disappointed! The rest of the food was ok but not great. Small portions, waiter was unskilled and dripped water on my foot and my son's twice. $200 bill before tip was kind off steep for 4 people with no alcohol and no appetizer. We paid and walked up the street to look at a store and on the way back to our car we were grilled rudely by the lady at the door since we parked in their lot. We had just been there and she had even poured water for is a couple times. Just the final nail in a bad experience, I guess."

  • "I really appreciated the manager, Joel, coming to suggest a booth for my husband and I as an alternative to waiting in the bar. He took me over to sit there to see what I thought before deciding. The food was delicious - especially the mushroom raviolis our fish was served with! Not only the manager, but the General Manager, stopped to check on us. There was a huge selection of scrumptious looking desserts! We only tried one."

  • "We asked a couple of random strangers in the airport for restaurant recommendations in Kailua - each of them said "Try The Fish Hopper". What great advice! We say at the bar and tried a couple of specialty drinks while our table was being cleared. When we arrived we had asked the manager, Joel, for a roadside/harbor view table. He cheerfully obliged and we were given a great view of the harbor and the opportunity to indulge in some people watching. Menu watching was superb too. We had calamari to start (I'd also recommend the ahi trio) and then the Big Island Ahi Tuna - blackened with some gentle papaya relish and my wife ordered the filet. Both great. Only challenge is parking as there is only a small lot behind the restaurant."

  • "The actual menu was vastly different than their online menu. Even when the items were the same they were 20% higher than the online prices. Sort of like bait and switch. Food was good but portions are small and expensive."

  • "Annual visitor to Kona. Hadn't eaten here before, should have. Had dinner and breakfast. Super friendly staff and service. Clean, but not fancy. Very good food. Covered, open air dining in a great location harbor-side. Will definitely return."

  • "The Fish Hopper offers good food, drink and amazing views of the Pacific Ocean. The open air restaurant allows for views of the ocean regardless of where you sit. The food is good. There are many fish selections and some meat selections for the carnivore. The drink selections are numerous as well. There is an extensive wine list and many tropical drinks on the menu. You cannot go wrong with a meal at Fish Hopper."

  • "We made a last minute dinner reservation at Fishhopper and were thrilled with this place. Walked in to see the best table in the place with a reserved sign on it - open air overlooking the water ( road in between but you don't notice it). The service was excellent and the food delicious. Our friends were so impressed with Open Table they're going to join. Thanks for finding us a great place to make some wonderful memories!"

  • "We had quite a few options to choose from for dinner, but so glad we picked the Fish Hopper. From the moment we entered, the staff was inviting and friendly, but not overbearing. The food was awesome and the recommended dessert was fantastic! The only thing missing was a sunset (overcast), but the restaurant didn't control that! "

  • "My wife and I have lived in Kona for 30 years and watched the Ocean View restaurant turn into your beautiful restaurant. We had friends in town visiting for the last week and they were catching a midnight plane, last night, back to Arizona. We wanted to thank you and your staff, especially Tim and Dustan, for making their last night in Kona and our Valentine’s Day, very special. You took care of all eight of us with great food, great service and especially the “entertainment!” Dustan was a real hoot! Anyone that visits Kona and doesn't stop at the Fish Hopper is missing out! They make a great breakfast, too, and what a view!"

  • "We had to wait 4 or 5 minutes for our table after making reservations. The service was very good and speedy after we were seated. The food was good to very good. I knocked off one star because my stepdads steak and my own weren't as tender as they could be. They were perfectly cooked though."

  • "Awesome dinner, great location and service. What more could you ask for! Quickly becoming one of our favorite in Kona. Mahalo"

  • "We have previously given them much higher marks. The food quality has slipped and prices have gone up. Calamari was rubbery, a sure sign of trouble in the kitchen. I had the Mac Nut crusted Mahi Mahi, always a favorite, smaller portion and very bland, not the vibrant dish it once washere. The coconut shrimp continues to be good, however the two in our party that had the mixed seafood mostly got calamari on their plates and it was tough. The great harbor view and service remain, but this is no longer on our recommend list for dining in Kona."

  • "the poke was phenomenal, I was a little disappointed with the non-local food offerings though, many things on the menu when asked were not local. The stuffed shrimp which came with the filet mignon were small and the stuffing was bland. The fish in the fish and chips was very dry. I'd give this place another try."

  • "Recommended by one of the Marriott executives. Food was good as well as the service. The wine list should accommodate every budget level. The restaurant sits on the coastline with Alii rd between you and the water. The traffic can be a little bother but not Terrible."

  • "Four of us took a 95 yr old friend out for lunch. We were unavoidably late but the staff was gracious and provided perfect service. I highly recommend this restaurant for lunch with it's great view of Kailua Bay and outstanding fish specials. My Hebi was perfect, as was my wife's Mahi-Mahi."

  • "Our large group tried a number of dishes (surf and turf, crab cakes, Mahi-Mahi, chicken in Alfredo noodles, coconut shrimp, etc.) The only thing that we could rate as good were the coconut shrimp."
