  • "Wonderful place to go for a late night date. Don't have a date? Go with your friends. You won't regret it."

  • "A great place for a visiting parent to take a Duke student and friends to dinner. The food was delicious and the servers were friendly. An outdoor table on a sunny afternoon was particularly pleasant."

  • "We went to the Washington Duke Inn for dinner last night to celebrate my husband's PhD defense. I called ahead to get a drink delivered to our table. Not only was the drink not delivered, but we had to specifically ask for drinks and to see a wine list. Our waitor was inattentive at best. We enjoyed the ambience (especially the piano player), and the food was overall pretty good. The service was not good at all, especially not what I'd expect from the Washington Duke and certainly not what I expected on such a special occasion. Overall, the waitor was overall non-responsive. I will liky not return to the Washington Duke again given this experience."

  • "We went to celebrate my birthday and I will have to say from top to bottom it was the best dining experience we have ever had. Our server Miguel was knowledgeable and attentive without being intrusive. The service was at just the right pace and the food....absolutely the best crab cake I have had and I have eaten a lot of crab cakes. We were made to feel special and important. It was such a great evening. Thank you so much for making my dining experience just that....an experience."

  • "Fine flavors, really efficient personal service, calm and unhurried with a lovely view of the gardens and the golf course. These elements make for a successful lunch. Monkfish and rubbed salmon are highly recommended as is the lavender mousse and pistachio ice cream."

  • "Great spot for our 20th wedding anniversary. Everything was the best and a great experience."
    Dined on 3/18/2014
  • "A delicious breakfast made a relaxing start to the day. Berries were served at just the right temperature. Prosciutto was a tasty addition to eggs benedict."

  • "Hospital cafeteria grade chicken dinner. Overpriced wine. Mediocre salad."
    Dined on 3/15/2014
  • "The dining room was hushed and fancy, making me very uncomfortable, even though I don't like a lot of noise either. The menu is pretentious, mixing lots of strange things together. The food was good, though, since I ordered the one entree that didn't contain anything I particularly dislike."

  • "I was greeted by a handsome young man with a lovely smile. His tag said trainee. He later greeted me as I waited for my guest and ask if there was anything I needed. He agreed to welcome my friend by name when she arrived (I described her). The staff graciously changed our table arrangement due to my friends walking limitations. Our wait staff was friendly and helpful. Our wine and food was perfect! I have enjoyed myself everytime I have been a guest at the Washington Duke! Thank you."

  • "My daughter and I were visiting Duke University and stayed at the Washington Duke Hotel. We ate at Fairview Restaurant three times during our stay. All meals were excellent."

  • "We celebrated an 81st birthday among four of "us girls," and it was relaxed, lovely setting, delicious, great birthday cake slice that we shared (perfect,) and a gentle surrounding that was a perfect fit. These were "old hands" at Duke, but it felt like a new experience. Great thanks, KLR"

  • "We usually reserve the Fairview Room for special occasions. Because my wife is allergic to shellfisnh the kitchen brought her a special amuse bouche instead of the lobster salad. I was clumsy enough to spill 1/2 a glass of wine all over the table which was cleaned up before we knew it. The food was excellent and the service was impeccable. We especially enjoyed our desserts."

  • "This is my fourth time dining at the Fairview, and it is consistently excellent food and even better service."

  • "We love this place. It's elegant, yet friendly. The food is always stellar. You can't miss."

  • "This is my go to restaurant for a lovely quiet scrumptious meal. The food is cooked perfectly and the combinations of ingredients and flavors in many dishes are complex but could not work together more beautifully. I also have had to start eating gluten free and I have been so happy that I have still been able to enjoy nearly all of the dishes and the staff are very knowledgeable about gluten. The wait staff are friendly and very attuned to details but not in your way and not "snooty" at all. They actually served GF bread before the meal (standard GF). For dessert, the Crème Brule and a type of chocolate cake are both GF. The Brule is very very good. Ok for well behaved kids used to eating food other than nuggets and fries."

  • "Food was very good but Eggs Benedict were cold. When I mentioned this to waitperson, I was comped on the bill. Good response."

  • "We had a great dinner and a great time. It was our first visit. My wife loved her dinner (salmon) and the restaurant. My chicken with pomegranate glaze was good, but chicken was too dry. We had a single crab cake for appetizer and it may have been the best crab cake we've ever had. Walking around both wings around the hotel at the restaurant level and one level below was great. The wall items (awards, pictures, statues, flags, keys, etc.) and Mrs. Duke's dresses were fabulous. For Valentine's Day weekend, the ambiance would have been better to turn off the large screen TVs. A classy restuarant should not have TVs on, especially after the Duke game was over. That's what the bar across the hallway is for."

  • "Although we really like this place in general, Valentine's Day was a disaster. We couldn't eat our meals, the fix menu items were so limited and the service wasn't good. The only nice part about our dinner was the chocolate covered strawberries and the red balloon they gave."

  • "Took my wife there for a Valentine's day dinner. It was a different menu for the night so probably not a true representative of their normal menu. While it looked really good on paper, the food was at best OK. I had tuna that was overpowered with crusted pepper, and a scallop that was missing any excitement. My wife had a duck that was really decent, but the side of polenta was tasteless and was missing even salt. I paired this with a nice bottle of vine, that turned out to be the best feature. Service and atmosphere were great, with really great wait staff and nice piano in a background."

  • "The manager Bobby is great. So were the servers and maître de April."

  • "I love coming here before a Duke game. The Bull Durham Bar is always hopping, and it's generally a challenge to get a seat. I planned ahead and made a reservation in the Fairview. April greeted us and showed us to a lovely table by the window. Diego was our waiter, and he did a very nice job. I had planned on getting a burger but was lured away by the salmon over grits. Excellent! I highly recommend. My friend had the rice spaghetti. She really liked it as well but couldn't finish; it was just too much food. We had a great meal. Too bad Wake Forest lost."

  • "I was impressed by the charming elegance of the Fairview. Although there were many students in the crowd, the restaurant still maintained a refined character. The waitstaff were professional and attentive, and the food was delicious and creative. I would like to come back again."

  • "The brunch was lovely, but prices were between $26 and $37. Way too high for a brunch!"

  • "I went to Fairview for the first time during lunch for Triangle Restaurant Week. It was a Sunday afternoon, so other people were having brunch. Fairview is in the Washington Duke Inn, so many people who dine there are associated with Duke. Unfortunately, we were given a table beside some very loud college girls. The dessert table looked appetizing though and had many options, but since we had a fixed menu, we couldn't partake. My favorite part was the pianist playing the baby grand. Our table was located right in front of him, and our dining experience just seemed more pleasant. I had the tarragon mushroom soup and sirloin steak wedge salad, and both were delicious. Great experience overall."

  • "Great food, great service, great dining experience overall. I've been coming to the WaDuke for years since my days as an undergrad at Duke, and everything has remained at a consistently high quality."

  • "What made this so great is that during restaurant week, you get a real bargain and the portions are the same as on normal days. All the food was delicious, exempt the dessert."
    Dined on 1/25/2014
  • "Staff was superb. My wife and I spent a delicious 2 1/2 hours over a fine meal accompanied by great wine and service. Will be back as often as possible. I want to sample more menu items! Gratis "fine dining" dessert was a happy surprise."

  • "As a group of 10 college students, we were lucky to have the opportunity of restaurant week experience the Fairview Dining room. The service was great (thanks, Houston!), the food was yummy and the hosts were very accommodating. Overall, a fantastic experience!"

  • "We hadn't been to Fairview at the WaDuke for many years, but decided to re-visit for restaurant week. The menu was diverse, the portions were large, the food was locally-sourced, and the service was very good. Would go again any time."
    Dined on 1/25/2014
  • "Wonderful service. Staff was very attentive. Offered very good traditional dishes. Wonderful venue for a reliable meal, not necessarily a place to go for innovative cuisine."
    Dined on 1/26/2014
  • "The place is beautiful & service was outstanding. They have a great wine list & lots of local beers on tap. The food was good. It was not great. I expected great food for the price & reputation. There are certainly other restaurants nearby with better food, but Durham did make the "South's Tastiest Towns," so there is a lot of stellar competition. That being said, I would return, just with more accurate expectations."

  • "This week was Triangle Restaurant week and, in spite of the fact we live in a city with the best food in town, we chose to go to the Fairview again. To be honest we try and budget at least 2 trips a year to this eatery because it's just amazing. I've never met friendlier or more helpful staff. The food rocks and the ambiance is sublime!"

  • "I went as part of a group of 5 for Restaurant Week this January. The service was great, they handled our party and several other large parties well. The food was good, but not great. I had the shrimp and corn chowder that was a little bland and the monkfish which was dry. The assorted pastries for dessert were delicious."

  • "We had brunch before a Duke basketball game. Was expecting the bar menu & was somewhat surprised, but that may be because we're not Saturday lunchtime regulars. Brunch had mixed reviews. 1st course was granola, yogurt & fruit compote. I liked it. Two friends ordered fruit that came with a side of yogurt - they didn't like the yogurt, melon wasn't ripe. Quiche was somewhat rubbery. Goat Lady eggs benedict was very good, particularly the proscuitto. We didn't have time for dessert. Service wasn't the best. It was attentive to start, but as the restaurant cleared out approaching game time, the service got sloooooow. That's when it should have gotten better with fewer patrons to occupy her. We'll go back but probably skip brunch. Too expensive."

  • "Came for Triangle Restaurant Week, got the $15 prix fixe menu (ended up being about $18 due to gratuity): winter salad, brown rice puttenesca, and mango ice cream. Paid using food points, had a lot of fun with friends, great outing. Soup portions were a bit small unfortunately. Friends ended up eating too many cheese biscuits and not being able to finish their food but we took the leftovers to go, it was great."

  • "I had a wonderful experience at Fairview. Our waiter, Diego, could not have been more helpful, and was extremely patient as I explained my many dietary restrictions. I have noticed, unfortunately, in my last few visits for both dinner and brunch that service has slowed drastically. If you're looking for a quick bite, or even a one hour bite, this is certainly not the place."

  • "My Buffalo chicken wrap with Fontina, lettuce, etc., tasted as though all the fillings had been thrown into a food processor to produce an overly-spicy, unappetizing mash. My french fries appeared to be right out of a bag of frozen matchstick fries. And this mess came at a premium price. I won't be back."

  • "Delightful evening from welcome to check out. Service was exceptional in that it was unobtrusively seamless. Couple that with delicious food and comfortable surroundings and you know you will return soon."

  • "The Fairview has always been a pretty good restaurant but it seems to have gotten better perhaps rivaling the now-closed Magnolia Grill. We were promptly seated at a nice booth. The server was efficient and friendly and helped with the wine choice. My grit cake appetizer was fabulous as was my crab cake entrée. My wife filet mignon was cooked to perfection. This was a very good meal and we will certainly return."
