Diner Reviews
  • "The Fairview was quiet, the background music set a lovely tone, not too loud. The staff was friendly and efficient, as well as, courteous. There were very few customers the day we dined, but I would assume that the same service would be afforded if it were crowded. The meals we had were perfectly prepared. The complimentary gustapo was outstanding."

  • "We had the opportunity to experience dining at the Fairview through Triangle Restaurant Week's fixe price menu during lunch. The food was amazing, the views were beautiful but for lunch the service was slow. The overall experience was positive and I would highly recommend but only when you have plenty of time."

  • "Visited the Fairview Dining Room with a group of retired teachers. We were treated as very special guests. Our waitress was fantastic. We were seated by windows overlooking beautiful gardens. The food was wonderful especially the corn chowder!"

  • "Spent the night at the a joining Washington Duke Inn and ate dinner at the Fairview for our anniversary. This is a very nice upscale restaurant with great views of the close by golf course. A piano player entertained throughout the meal which was nice as long as you were not seated too close. I had the cornbread crusted halibut which was good, but hard to taste the cornbread and the tomato jus was acidy and overpowering. My wife had the crab cake which she enjoyed. The waiter was always prompt and they acknowledged our special event. In fact, the chef sent out a nice plate with brownies which was nice, but we had already ordered desert. Overall, a very good evening and a recommended stop."

  • "Wonderful ambiance with a live piano player - loud enough to be heard without disrupting conversation. Delicious food and very courteous staff. Excellent wine selection. It is pricey and takes awhile for the food to arrive, but if you plan on it being an evening event and enjoy the atmosphere and the people you are with, you will have a lovely time."

  • "We were very disappointed in our meal here. We had planned, many months in advance to celebrate here after the culmination of graduation ceremonies. When we arrived we discovered, were not told, that there was a 'special menu' in operation that was a fixed price version as it was also Mother's Day (we are UK based and Mother's Day is in March, so this was not on our radar). There was no price on any of the menus, but we proceeded in the interests of the moment. The food was ordinary at best. The seating was next to some sort of 'rest area' for the staff where people were popping in and out all evening which was irritating. The service was awkward and uncomfortable. Immesnsely overpriced and disappointing. Reputation has outlived the reality"

  • "The quality of the food was spectacular! The flavors really came through and the quality of the ingredients was as expected of the Washington Duke Inn experience."

  • "The Duke Univ historical fine dining restaurant. Chef attempts to be creative and the food is reasonably good, but still has a way to go before achieving 5-star quality. "

  • "The staff at Fairview always give amazing service and serve the most awesome food! I took my girlfriend here for her birthday and it was so spectacular because we were so well cared for! I highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "I went with my parents and boyfriend for Sunday brunch. The food was certainly good, but not fantastic. I have had better brunches for a smaller cost. The dessert bar is special though, as you get unlimited trips to a selection of cute and tasty small desserts. I had the belgian waffle, which was nothing particularly special, although the bacon was plentiful and delicious. I am not sure if I would pay that price for this brunch again, but given that my parents picked up the bill it was lovely. Service was nothing extraordinary, but fine. The setting itself is very cute and cozy."

  • "It made a nice change. Food was delicious. Fairview makes for an all round dining experience; warm welcome, comfortable surroundings, great view, and a delicious menu."

  • "It was a beautiful evening so we opted to eat outside on the covered patio overlooking the wooded golf course at sunset. No bugs. No wind. Quiet. Only muted conversations could be heard. It was beautiful and serene. Service was attentive yet unobtrusive. I had a lamb dish that was prepared as ordered. My wife enjoyed salmon over pasta. The cocktails were generous; we were staying at the Washington Duke so it wasn't a problem. Ample free parking. The Washington Duke is across the street from Duke University and a quick 10 minute walk to the Bryan Center. Recommended. "

  • "The staff was amazing and supportive. I actually proposed to my girlfriend, and they were willing to do almost anything to make sure that it was an experience of a lifetime. On top of this, the food was outstanding. This is a great place regardless of the occasion!"

  • "PALM SUNDAY Brunch was a very disappointing experience for our party of four. Though we had a reservation, we waited more than 30 minutes to be seated at a beautiful window-side table. It was all down hill from that point on. We ended up bussing our own table so we could enjoy some dessert from the sweets table. Management of this fine establishment has been made aware of our harrowing experience and offered to right their wrong. They were very apologetic and gracious. "

  • "A wonderful dining experience with long time local friends. As Duke parents it was nice to take them to a place they hadn't been before ! The trout amuse bouche was sensational. The duck confit was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Loved seeing the college kids eating there, including my own, trying and enjoying new foods. Highly recommend for a very pleasant evening and dinner. Grounds are also gorgeous"

  • "A great place for a visiting parent to take a Duke student and friends to dinner. The food was delicious and the servers were friendly. An outdoor table on a sunny afternoon was particularly pleasant."

  • "We went to the Washington Duke Inn for dinner last night to celebrate my husband's PhD defense. I called ahead to get a drink delivered to our table. Not only was the drink not delivered, but we had to specifically ask for drinks and to see a wine list. Our waitor was inattentive at best. We enjoyed the ambience (especially the piano player), and the food was overall pretty good. The service was not good at all, especially not what I'd expect from the Washington Duke and certainly not what I expected on such a special occasion. Overall, the waitor was overall non-responsive. I will liky not return to the Washington Duke again given this experience."

  • "We went to celebrate my birthday and I will have to say from top to bottom it was the best dining experience we have ever had. Our server Miguel was knowledgeable and attentive without being intrusive. The service was at just the right pace and the food....absolutely the best crab cake I have had and I have eaten a lot of crab cakes. We were made to feel special and important. It was such a great evening. Thank you so much for making my dining experience just that....an experience."

  • "Fine flavors, really efficient personal service, calm and unhurried with a lovely view of the gardens and the golf course. These elements make for a successful lunch. Monkfish and rubbed salmon are highly recommended as is the lavender mousse and pistachio ice cream."

  • "The dining room was hushed and fancy, making me very uncomfortable, even though I don't like a lot of noise either. The menu is pretentious, mixing lots of strange things together. The food was good, though, since I ordered the one entree that didn't contain anything I particularly dislike."

  • "I was greeted by a handsome young man with a lovely smile. His tag said trainee. He later greeted me as I waited for my guest and ask if there was anything I needed. He agreed to welcome my friend by name when she arrived (I described her). The staff graciously changed our table arrangement due to my friends walking limitations. Our wait staff was friendly and helpful. Our wine and food was perfect! I have enjoyed myself everytime I have been a guest at the Washington Duke! Thank you."

  • "We celebrated an 81st birthday among four of "us girls," and it was relaxed, lovely setting, delicious, great birthday cake slice that we shared (perfect,) and a gentle surrounding that was a perfect fit. These were "old hands" at Duke, but it felt like a new experience. Great thanks, KLR"
