Diner Reviews
  • "Ambiance is great, but with the crowds and the sun it gets very hot. I had a reservation for 3, and we ordered our food and the 3 drinks that come along with it. Our drinks were filled when they were 1/3 full which made us feel like we didn't get our moneys worth. We got the check, 1 paid with cash and 2 with card. He (waiter with a mohawk) came back with the check and made sure to tell us that "the person who paid cash only gave me a 25 cent tip." Okay dude, calm down. That was going to come later, now it will be less. He then gave us tickets to enjoy a free drink downstairs at the bar. We continued talking, and he came back and cleared our table and told us that "it's time for us to leave" when we weren't even there for an hour. AWFULLLLL"

  • "Great deal on dollar oysters. We shared an entree and it was delicious. Half price drinks packed a punch and not to the wallet. A great place for Happy Hour and Brunch."

  • "This time we made it to their Happy Hour. $1 Blue Point oysters, 1/2 off drinks , and Wednesday's lobster special. Everything is absolutely delicious. Staff is attentive and supper nice. Will come back soon if not next week :)"

  • "We love Essex for the party like atmosphere and the can't be beat $1 oysters and delicious cocktails at half price during the generous happy hour. We make a meal of oysters and an assortment of the very good appetizers/small plates, which in general are more satisfying than the entrees. The crab cakes, mussels, ceviche, kale salad, etc are always good. And if you like lobster, the Wed night lobster special is great!"

  • "Good food, good service (at least before crowds arrived) in coolest part of Lower East Side. Restaurant separate from bar which was jammed when we finished relatively early dinner. Noise set to begin as we left. Also, be sure to check out Essex Market - the restaurant occupies the northern end of the revived market."

  • "Great food and fun atmosphere. I mean REALLY great food! This is a jewel in an interesting neighborhood. The only downside - it's a little loud when the place is full - it became difficult to have a conversation."

  • "I love this place. It becomes a tradition to come here for my Birthday. Every time we come, waiting staff make you feel comfortable and important. They are very attending and polite. Food and drinks are fabulous. Will definitely come back and recommend this place to my friends."

  • "Minimalist at its best, very sleek and sexy at this restaurant. High ceilings and evenly spaced seating creates a comfortable loft like atmosphere. The potato pancakes are a must try, crispy and not greasy. They offer a Great deal for brunch, for $24 you can get an entree and 3 drinks."

  • "The brunch special is fantastic and Essex surely did not disappoint. Loved the mimosas, crab cake Benedict, and the macaroni and cheese with lobster added! Superb dining experience for our group of 4."

  • "Set price on brunch for $23.95 is way too high. Waitress keep rushing us to take our order. She suggested we tip her 20% tips. She's lucky she gets 15% ."

  • "I was there previously at night for a b-day occasion (which was great!) but during the day it has a completely different ambiance. There are windows in the ceiling that bring in so much natural light during the day-it is an awesome brunch spot! The food was amazing (try the down south or crab patties) and the service was excellent. Our waitress hooked us up with the unlimited refills instead of the menu stated 3-drink max. The noise level is loud but our group probably attributed to that... great scene!"

  • "Good location in the Lower East Side, young crowd, good price for Sunday Brunch, Service was great, food was fine, but could have been better."

  • "Everything was great. Service, food, ambience, etc. The only issue was we had a 1pm reservation, and did not get seated until 1:30pm. A fairly long wait when having a reservation for brunch. However, the hostess was extremely nice in trying to get us seated, and gave us 4 drink tickets for each of us to get a free drink at the bar while waiting. So I give her an A+ for that! Would highly recommend going again. Great for groups!!!"

  • "This place can be a little cramp for big groups. Food was okay nothing to get excited about. I loved that the drinks kept flowing and they were strong! "

  • "We went here for Sunday brunch after reading some good reviews. Made a reservation for a specific time, still had to wait about 30 minutes. The place has hard floors and hard walls and lots of open space, which translates to extreme loudness. We could barely hear each other speak. The decor reminded me of my elementary school gymnasium, complete with old baseballs glued to the walls. The food was so-so--stale rolls, cold eggs, really thick hollandaise, one notch above cafeteria fare. And the bathrooms were like something you'd encounter at a bus station in Mexico. On the plus side, they guaranteed three mimosas and actually gave us more. Great if you like canned OJ, flat Champagne and plastic flutes. Not high on our return list."

  • "I love going to brunch at Essex. The unlimited mimosas are amazing and the food is always spectacular. I am a creature of habit and always order the Aristocrat -- perfectly poached eggs. Kind of annoying that it's cash only, but c'est la vie."

  • "On my trip to New York this past weekend we visited Essex twice, because our hotel was a few blocks away. First for happy hour, which had great specials on drinks, I think cocktails were about $6, and $1 oysters. It would have been nice if they had more discounted appetizers, but still a solid happy hour overall. Then we went back on Sunday for brunch. It's $23.95 for 3 drinks (bloody mary, mimosa, or screwdriver) AND any entree from the brunch menu. This is an amazing deal for NYC. The food was good, not amazing, but at these prices it's definitely worthwhile if you're looking for a boozy brunch. A great neighborhood spot on the lower east side!"

  • "Another table had been sat well after us, yet still managed to be greeted & receive drinks before our table was even fully reset. When we finally did get our mimosas, they were warm; because the sparkling wine that they were using was carelessly being poured directly out of the case. The brunch menu itself is diverse, but bordered being diner-esque. I ordered a traditional eggs Benedict whose hollandaise sauce lacked zing. We also got their Manchego macaroni & cheese with lobster; this was a better dish and I was impressed by how well the lobster paired with the sheep’s milk-based cheese. While they do offer a great many menu choices, sometimes a smaller offering done really well is better than having a lot of dishes done average."

  • "Sunday brunch reservations at 11:30am only to find out that the liquor portion of the brunch deal does not start until 12pm. Since we were 30 minutes off, food was finished way before our 3 drinks. We were given the check before last round of drinks served, we weren't even asked, and then told that there was another reservation and we needed to leave the table. The waitress was apologetic and very nice but still felt like an assembly line. We were "invited to go to the bar" where we were then told by the bartender that we could only sit until he had other customers. Fine place but I may not return."

  • "This was my first time to Essex and I go to brunch every weekend at different places and I loved this place! Super vibrant and trendy crowd, awesome food and great service! We didn't even have to ask for our drinks because our waitress kept them coming! The short rib hash and shrimp and grits were delish! I will be returning very soon!"

  • "I was disappointed from the moment I walked through the door. Despite having my reservation and arriving on time, I had to wait between 30 and 45 minutes to be seated; and constantly had to remind the hostess of my presence, as people who arrived without reservations after I did were seated before me. Our waitress was attentive and capable. However, the food arrived cold. I had the Essex Famous potato pancakes. The bean hash was cold and bland, the cream sauce was cold and tasted of spoiling milk, and I can only describe the potato pancakes as dry. My friend had the crabcake benedict and was equally displeased. Her food was also cold; which of course caused the eggs to be inedible. Ambience at Essex is the best quality."

  • "As part of a bachelorette weekend, my 3 girlfriends and I went here for brunch. The food and service were great!"
    Dined on 5/3/2014
  • "Service was frigid, even by New York standards. My dish was dry and wilted, although my friend enjoyed his eggs benedict. Mimosas were served warm, which was unacceptable. Brunch is cash only, raising intriguing tax evasion questions as well as general resentment. I had to walk several blocks in a sleazy area to an ATM. Regretted straying away from Paradou."
