Diner Reviews
  • "This is a lovely restaurant with extraordinary food. Each course flowed to the next with exciting taste and beautiful presentation. The ice cream dessert was out of this world-- jasmine ice cream with lemon brandy syrup, apricots, and pistachios! Service was impeccable throughout. We had previously dined on the patio last Fall with the mountains as a backdrop, and were inside this time. Either way it was extraordinary!"

  • "I dined at El Meze as part of a group of four, and that was important. It meant that each of us could order different dishes and share. Nothing disappointed. The peppers and flatbread with chevre kicked off the meal, the salads were fantastic, the tamale was delicious and the desserts–paired with a nice glass of sherry–were a wonderful close. We enjoyed the food, had a terrific server and met the chef at the end of the night. El Meze set the stage for a great evening with friends, provided a warm and casual environment and served really terrific food. Check it out!"

  • "El Meze fit the bill for our group after a full day of skiing....the ambiance of the old home is warm and inviting, the staff equally so....We chose this restaurant based on prior reviews and our preference for something a bit out of the ordinary run of New Mexico fare....and we're not disappointed....The starter " tapas" dishes were delicious, everyone's entrees were shared with enthusiasm as we had each tried different items, and the cardamon doughnuts were a fitting finale....I dined " light" with mussels and a grilled romaine salad...both prepared perfectly. Their version of a NM enchilada was phenomenal....a small restaurant, so suggest making reservations, especially if you are a group."

  • "We enjoyed our early dinner in this old adobe set off the main road heading north out of Taos. Excellent, responsive and prompt service that was very knowledgeable about food and wine. Only disappointment was the limited menu which just didn't have many choices that we found appealing. We liked what we ordered, particularly the buffalo short ribs adovada, but probably won't go back until the menu changes...which we understand it does from time to time. All in all, a very positive experience."

  • "El Meze is a great restaurant. The outside area was closed (too cold), so we could not sit outside and gaze at Taos Mountain. But the interior space was as quaint as it used to be when RC Gorman used to hang out there years ago (when the restaurant was under another ownership and name). My daughter and her fiancé had the buffalo tamale and loved it, I enjoyed the pasta dish, and we enjoyed the Spanish wine with dinner. We couldn't resist the dessert menu, and loved them all."

  • "We may not have found El Meze, if it weren't for our B&B hosts, and boy would we have missed out! This place looks like nothing from outside. The logo looks like there's blood splattered on it for some reason. But the food here was incredible. The atmosphere is funky and adorable, if not romantic, and we did not have a single item (4 courses) that we didn't like. The salads were impeccable. The mussels were the best I have ever eaten, and we could have consumed the leftover broth with a straw. The trout was insanely good. Everything was fantastic. I cannot wait to return to Taos so I can eat here again."

  • "After a month in Taos we finally made it to El Meze, food and service were excellent, Harley our server did a great job with wine selection and service. All of the staff were attentive and the decor was very cozy Southwest. We will dine here again next year."

  • "Our band of 5 tried probably 4 of the best restaurants in Taos and El Meze was tops. Fried olives were delicious and interesting, excellent quality steak, the trout is a must try for someone at the table (fresh fish and interesting cilantro preparation). Two people ordered oxtails and they were stewed perfectly. My favorite was the Chicarrones which is normally "nasty bits or offal" but El Meze uses pork belly. It's crisp and tender and fatty, absolutely the way it should be. Wine list is very good, if a tad bit too marked up in some places."

  • "We selected based on top rating and excellent reviews. So, our expectations were high. Our expectations were satisfied. The dessert, Almond Semifreddo, topped off an excellent dining experience. We highly recommend the grilled whole trout."

  • "We had heard various comments about El Meze, and decided to check it out for ourselves during restaurant week in Taos. Our server, Kelly, was very welcoming and efficient. We ordered from the $30 prix fixe menu. First were olives stuffed with bleu cheese lightly fried in egg whites. Yummy with the Spanish wine we ordered! We ordered 2 different salads, one with beets, one with bibb lettuce and blueberries. Both tasted very fresh and were generous portions. I had the mussels as my entree. They were wonderful! Who would of thought that northern NM would have great mussels?!!! My husband ordered a vegetarian dish with homemade pasta and beans. It was also delicious. The desserts were fabulous as well. We will definitely return to El Meze!"

  • "With all the reviews, we were expecting this to be the find in Taos. It's all about the food, and though the atmosphere and service were first rate, the food, sadly, was not. Not bad, just average. Try the Love Apple instead!"

  • "The food we were served was among the best dinners we have ever had! It is simple in its construction, but truly top notch in flavor combinations, preparation, and plating. I just returned from a 9 day trip to NYC. The food at El Meze rivaled everything that I had in NY. Every course was just done perfectly! Ok....I am a major foodie, so you might also want to know that the service was superb and the atmosphere great. The only bad thing I can say is that the menu the night we were there was somewhat limited. But, this is usually a sign of a good restaurant. I am sure they rotate entrees based on seasonality, possibly even daily, weekly, or monthly. Finally, the price was incredibly reasonable, especially given the excellent experience."

  • "A mid-week, winter Taos evening meant we had the entire place to ourselves. The service from Kelly was exceptional. She clearly knew the entire menu. We ordered three appetizers: the slow-cooked beans and flatbread, the warm mushroom salad and the veal sweetbreads. The sweetbreads were our favorites with the salad close behind. The beans were too filling with everything else we ordered, but still delicious. For entrees, we devoured the pasta e fagiole and trout with herb salad. Both were well cooked. The pasta was made in house and had a nutty taste and hearty texture. The trout came whole with head, deboned and filled with an herb and spicy butter mixture. The grilled skin was crispy and delicious. We highly recommend El Meze."

  • "Our nephew gave us a gift certificate to El Meze, and we saved it for a special occasion. We dined early at 6 pm, and the restaurant was very quiet. It is housed in a historic hacienda at the base of Taos Mountain, which adds to its appeal. We will be going back. Wine list is a bit pricey, but you can take leftovers home, which is nice."

  • "We celebrated our anniversary here and loved it. The ambiance, service and food were all wonderful. The atmosphere was friendly and warm. We look forward to dining here again, especially since our daughter and husband are soon moving to Taos. We look forward to eating outdoors in the summer because we understand that the views are fabulous. This is a gem!"

  • "Fantastic food but a very short menu. The menu was maybe one or two items short of making it easy to choose from. What we did settle on was superb. We started with the fried green olives stuffed with blue cheese. Wow-a winner! I decided on the chicharrones appetizer and the grilled romaine salad for dinner. They were Stellar! - chicharrones were outrageous with their dusting of chile and the cilantro sauce along with flat bread, and the white anchovy dressing on the salad was perfect. My husband had the trout which was boney but excellent and very well cooked. We had a great bottle of wine and out waitress brought us tastes of several wines to help us chose. Wonderful experience! Would definitely go back!"

  • "El Meze is a small restaurant with a varied menu and high food quality. I had the Boleti Beans with Fry Bread and a bacon spinach salad with applewood back bits, and blue cheese. The desert was a combination of almond gelato meringue, and fresh raspberries , drizzled with carmel sauce all the food was prepared to perfection and tasted fantastic. The server was very efficient and friendly. I will love to go back to El Meze when I visit Taos next."

  • "Very good service. One appetizer--a peppers and goat cheese dish---was so good we had another one for dessert! Didn't care as much for the pastafragoli which was much more than a soup, though taste was good."

  • "We selected this restaurant from many in Taos - and really glad we found it. The setting is charming, the food was truly memorable! The wine we chose perfect (Cotes-Du-Rhone 2011, Delas). Delicious from the appetizers, to the desserts.Wait staff pleasant and helpful. Kudos to the chef - wonderful gift with flavors and preparation!"

  • "Our only complaint was the wine pour for a $16 a glass was stingy. The food flavors were great and although we will not likely be back to Taos ( we were on vacation), we will certainly recommend to any one traveling there."
