  • "The friendly professional service was excellent; the food was not. The $15 cocktail was okay. The bread was cottony, tasteless, with mediocre butter; the iceberg lettuce salad was overdressed, with a few strange bacon bits; the tiny bowl of broccoli soup was heavy on the cream and lacked broccoli flavor. Dining in California should have a whiff of fresh- this place could have been anywhere in the US. The steak was delicious, but it is hard to screw up meat of that quality. The single baby carrot, five snap peas and two slices of squash were glistening with butter. The smashed potatoes felt like eating a tub of butter+sour cream. Overall, this meal was an expensive gut-buster. Add some fresh sides- it is California for heaven's sake!"

  • "I took my girlfriend to Donovan's as a last romantic dinner before she had to leave for work for over a month. The food was great, the service was excellent. We were fully informed by the staff when we had any questions, but were left alone to spend time toghether without much interruption. The restaurant was loud enough so we could discuss private things without whispering, but not so loud we had to yell. I would definitely go back. Though not cheap, worth every penny."

  • "On 3/21/14, the food, service, and the atmosphere were perfect to celebrate my wife's birthday. Our waiter was superb as well as the servers who assisted him. What amazed me the most was when I told our server I needed to get cash for the valet, he immediately offered to add the cost of the valet to our bill; no questions asked! My wife and I have dined at many of the high-end restaurants in San Diego, and to-date none of them have ever matched the "above and beyond" service we experienced at Donovan's San Diego!!! Way to go Donovan's...you are top notch in my book, and my family and I will definitely come back!"

  • "Wanted something nice and appropriate for my wedding anniversary. Donovan's was the answer. From the hustle and bustle of the downtown nightlife into an intimate escape. From the valet attendant to the shift manager, everyone was pleasant, helpful, attentive and welcoming. I had the bone-in New York strip cooked to perfection and my wife had the perfectly seasoned halibut. Everything tasted fresh. I highly recommend Donovan's for any special occasion or just a nice "date night" escape."

  • "The crew played a very important role in my proposal. Rite next to my tablr is where I dropped down to one knee and ask for my girlfriends hand at the time in marriage. While doing so I asked the waiter to take a few pics. The crew did great. She said yes and the promptly brought us out a glass of complamenty champagne. It was a very special nite and that did all the rite things to make it that much better. Oh and the food was out of this world. Big thanks to them."

The service is perfect with the proper amount of attention given without the feeling of the staff hovering. They give a very personal touch to the service making you feel like you are very special. The wine list is also extensive. The ambiance is very warm and romantic with the perfect touch of rustic. It is not just the food and service; it is the entire experience that will bring you back."

  • "I took my husband for his birthday and we had a fabulous time. You have 3 wait staff who work as a team to service you. I am very specific about how my food is prepared and what goes into it. The server made sure I got exactly what I was looking for and made suggestions for me to steer me in the right direction. Loved everything! For appetizer I had the Portobello mushroom and for dinner I had the Halibut with the sauce on the side. So delicious!"

  • "Delicious pre fix dinner was more than enough. The individual salad is fit for two. The entree had more than enough potatoes. Perhaps more vegetables on the plate would be recommended. The medallions of beef were very tender! The cream brûlée is large enough for two also. To top off the evening the waiter brought us a complimentary birthday dessert. We were all happy to walk back to our hotel after such a big meal!"

  • "My friend had a delicious 10 oz filet mignon He ordered creamed spinach - a little watery. Ruth Chris spinach is better I ordered calamari appetizer- good, but portion is best to share. Very large if you're ordering an entree as well. I ordered the halibut with beurre blanc. The pieces of fish they use are not of uniform thickness throughout. As a result, when the center (thickest) part is cooked perfectly, the edges are dry and over cooked. I sent mine back, and they graciously made another one. It had the same issue, but not as much. They serve it with a sauce boat full of the beurre blanc, but I don't want to drown my fish in a high calorie sauce. Don't get me wrong - the sauce was good. It shouldn't have to come to compensate."

All 4 agreed our meals were the best we have had. Cajun Lamb Shank appetizer was wonderful. Filets and Steaks were cooked perfectly and seemed juicy enough to cut without a knife. Service was attentive without being overbearing"

They made a great team, as all of our needs were met perfectly and we never felt rushed in any way even considering the late hour. We had the featured bone-in new york steak. It was truly remarkable; juicy, tender, and super flavorful. I'm in the industry, so my standards are very high.. I very rarely leave a dining experience feeling like every detail was attended to. But here, my expectations were well exceeded!! We will definately return!!"

  • "Attended Donvan's on the recommendation of my brother-in-law, who himself uses Galleger's steakhouse as a benchmark. My own benchmarks include Maestro's and Ruth's Chris. All marks for food, service, and ambiance are 5/5. The service in particular is spot on; we appreciated the attention to detail and personal space - servers announced they would be approaching closely. We ordered the bone-in rib eye which was a special for the night, while my brother-in-law and sister ordered new york and rib-eye respectively. Ours was excellent - flavorful, tender, and wonderfully paired with a bottle of BV Tapestry Reserve (a blend of cab and merlot). Afterwards, creme brulee and a hot tea rounded out the meal nicely. You will not be disappointed."

  • "Jack was our captain for the night, assisted by two other ladies, who made sure we never wanted for anything. They gave us a great table, very very romantic with beautiful lighting. Our dinner was amazing; I ordered the filet mignon 8oz with garlic smashed potatoes and veggies and my fiancé got the herb-crusted chicken with veggies and a baked potato served with a tomato and kapers sauce. Both were phenomenal! The steak melted in my mouth and had the perfect spiced crust on the outside. I would go there everyday if I could afford to, but I'll keep it sacred for special occasions and business dinners."
