A word from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - Troy
The Syracuse-based barbecue phenomenon plunked a sprawling roadhouse with all the familiar back-road accoutrements into an abandoned meat factory. Unfinished wood-beamed ceiling, burlap bag curtains, scattered country bric-a-brac, and an enthusiastic greeting feel worlds away from the city. The roll call of devotees includes area families, couples on casual dates and groups of Columbia students.

The Food
Though fried green tomatoes and punchy boiled shrimp start things off right, the smell of smoking meats quickly adjusts the focus. The smokey-sweet pork ribs gently release from the bone and the Texas brisket, a touch dry, gets a lift from a topping of tangy cured jalapeños and a dash of hot sauce. It's even safe to venture from red meat with the truly moist and tender chicken, brined then smoked for deep flavor. With the exception of the cakey corn bread, sides keep pace, with tangy Creole potato salad and sweetened baked beans the standouts.

  • "This was actually a really great night out with the lady. We set near a window that overlooked the Hudson, and I love the decor of the entire restaurant. I love the portions even more....my girl ordered the half rack of ribs which looked as if they came from the side of T-Rex (no pun intended). I would of just question the lack of intention we received early on from the employees, but overall they were still nice. I live in the Chicagoland area, so I can't wait till the new opening out here. MMMMMM............"

  • "the service was excellent, however, the food was awful. i expected real bbq favor and some southern cooking. instead my taste buds were assaulted with grease and an icky taste. the fried green tomatoes were nothing but deep fried batter and soggy. the ribs were so dry i needed a knife to try and pry the meat off the bone. overall it was not a good experience and i will never return. sorry."

  • "My husband and I had a great meal. Started off with a strawberry jalapeno mojito, We had the fried green tomatoes, never had them before, we got the small order just to try and enjoyed them. Then we got a small order of their drunken shrimp......to be honest, I could've eaten a bucket of those with a cold beer and would have been very happy. I will go back for the shrimp alone!!! We also shared an order of ribs with a few sides. The ribs were good, different from the flavor I am used to.but the quality was excellent. To tell you the truth there is so much on the menu, I would want to try something else next time anyway."

  • "We made a reservation through Open Table for 5 people at 6:45pm. Making the reservation was so easy! We arrived promptly at 6:45 and were taken right to our table. The service was excellent and attentive but not intrusive. The food was fabulous. We all ordered something different so we got to taste everybody else's food. We ordered Wings and Fried Green Tomatoes. The wings were delicious. I think they were called Wango Tango or something like that. They were big and meaty with good heat and flavor. The Fried green Tomatoes were the only disappointment. The coating was so hard and the inside was just mush. There was no tomato flavor at all. Everything else was great. Ribs, Pulled Pork, Mac n Cheese and Brisket!!"

  • "Picked up our friends at Albany Airport (from Virginia) Drove to Troy to shop and see the historic downtown area. Used online booking for an early dinner reservation for 7. First time there for 5 of us. Food and service excellent. They even called to confirm the online reservation. My friends all posted their likes and checkins on Facebook. A great kick off for the 4th of July holiday visit."

  • "First & last visit to Joe's Crab Shack in Latham NY in July 2014. There was 1 item on the menu that was available & not laden in preservatives; harmful chemicals; or laden with cheese or deep fried.We chose this sole option and due to the diners that sat across from us and warned us that they hoped our dining experience would be better than theirs, we decided to split a $17.00 "lobster" cobb salad. Sadly, the waitress offered a vacant gaze and came equipped with a bowl...no plates, or utensils to divi up this rabbit food . No ingredients in this bowl resembled a cobb salad. It truly was a bowl of romaine and 4 cherry tomatoes and 1 ounce of lobster flakes. To say it was a sad disappointment, was an understatement! Never Again."

  • "Overpriced and average. My son took me out for Father's Day. It took a little while for our server to get to us. Both of us ordered appetizers. I ordered the sausage, cheese, and crackers. Very skimpy. This is suppose to be the place for ribs. My son ordered a 3/4 rack and I ordered a 1/2 rack. Mine were OK. Not very meaty and a little dry and my son's were a little fatty. He could not eat two of the ribs because there was so much fat. The bills was $83.00 and with the tip he spent almost a $100 for 2 people. Had a much better experience at the Rib Shack. Overrated!"

  • "You know what you are going to get when you go Dinosaur! Relaxed atmosphere with Rock music in the background. Servers always pleasant and efficient. And of course, fine Bar-B-Q smoked on their outside smoker. My wife had had a salmon platter which she very much enjoyed. My son had the tres hombres platter of beef brisket, pulled pork and ribs, which he raved over. I had a combo plate of ribs and pulled pork. Again, they were great. An extensive beer list topped off the casual night out in fine style."

  • "I love Dinosaur BBQ. I have never eaten something there that I didn't like. LITERALLY EVERYTHING THERE IS DELICIOUS. I really like the Troy location for it's deck, view, parking, layout, etc. One of the best things about Dino is that no matter what you order, your food will be at your table quite quickly. Not only will it get there fast, it will be the GREATEST THING YOU WILL EVER PUT IN YOUR FACE!"

I had to find someone to pay, I had to pack my food to go after noticing the carry out implements, and she never returned. She did not deliver the food, I have NOTHING good to say about her. The food, my ribs arrived burned. I am going to the roadhouse next time I need a BBQ fix, Dino BBQ frankly has stunk the last several visits I used to visit every week, I will not be back for a long while. Food is over priced, over cooked, and they do not seem to care about service. Run from this place."

  • "I couldn't wait to try this place because I heard so many raving reviews from friends and family. What a better way to try this for the first time than at a dinner buffet for Easter? The ham and turkey was outstanding. Juicy & fresh sliced, what more could I ask? Now the ribs, yes they fell right off the bone, but I found them very bland. I tried every sauce that was laid before me, but overall, not impressed. Since BBQ is their thing, I expected a to-die-for flavor. Dessert: now we're talking! Brownies-delicious. Chocolate mousse pie-delicious. The atmosphere was casual, relaxed and friendly. So overall it was a nice dining experience, but I've had better BBQ from other local establishments."

  • "It is often hard to find good BBQ anywhere and the Capital Region is no exception. If you are looking for great BBQ and I mean "slap your mama" good, then I highly recommend this place. The food came out super quick and with the large amount of seating in the place the wait usually isn't that bad either. In fact, just talking about it has my mouth watering. ;)"

  • "Everything is delicious, not over salted and portion size is healthy. The sides are excellent too ( don't pass on the collards) and best Fried Green Tomatoes anywhere (although very pricey for only 5 slices it was $8.95?). Pork, chicken or beef, all the entrees are absolutely delicious and authentic. They were out of several bar/ beverage ingredients during our visit including iced tea (are you kidding me?) and the sangria was the only disappointment of the evening. Do not skip dessert as they are bargains, very tasty and fun to share. If you want great BBQ in the Capital region this is the place to park!"

  • "There is a black hair, spacy, girl who seats you when you arrive. She can never do her job right. You make a reservation on opentable, tell her your name, and she does not show you checked in. Not the first time, and there wasn't even a lot of customers. Guess she was too busy eating for all that thinking. Spacy is the best way I can describe her.they need to fix this....she has been there too long for this behavior."

  • "That's how tender the BBQ ribbons were at Dinosaur. Meats we sampled were all outstanding. The place was packed even on a Sunday night, though there was only minimal wait before being seated. The side portions are not large, but the sides are very good. I recommend Harlem potato salad in particular. They have a large selection of beers on tap."

  • "We are from Kansas City so looking for great BBQ in Troy NY sounded like a challenge. Boy were we wrong. Dinosaur was amazing. Meats were terrific but sides were out of this world. Try the sweet potatoes and collard greens. Then as difficult as it will be, save room for the homemade key lime pie. Absolute food heaven. Not to be missed on any trip to the NY capital region."
