  • "The warm bread was excellent. The sea bass and scallops were very good. The roasted fingerling potatoes were good, however some were burned on the edges and some were raw in the middle. The asparagus would have been good but was charred on the surface and they tasted like soot. The zucchini and tomatoes with sauce tasted like liquid soap, very bad. The creme brule was excellent, very large serving, enough for 2 to 4, very good. Service was very attentive, almost a little too much at times, but a definite effort toward pleasing and accommodating the customer. Very nice decor. AC was very cold."

  • "My first time at Dean's along with a girlfriend and we really enjoyed ourselves. I think I ate too many oysters but they were really delicious. Will be returning soon"

  • "The food is simply fantastic. Fresh seafood, much of it regional with fresh, local ingredients. The menu changes weekly, so there are always new things to try. This time we had the spicy tuna appetizer, which had just the right amount of heat. Our entrees were spicy lobster Harissa bowl, a stew of a generous amount of lobster and shrimp with Israeli couscous and middle eastern spices; and the fresh girlled salmon with fingerling potatoes and cilantro remoulade. Both were outstanding and cooked to perfection. We also love their marinara dipping sauce that comes with the bread. The first time we found Dean's was by accident during a stop over on a trip from KY to the outer banks; when we were back to Durham, we just had to go again."

  • "This was our first visit, but sure not to be our last. Usually scallops and squid are chewy, but not these. Lightly breaded (not battered) and fried, they were delectable and tender. The opah I ate was delicious and grilled just the right amount (perhaps underdone for some, but perfect to my palate). The quinoa tabbouleh was novel and delicious. Finally, their signature dessert, banana bread pudding with an accent of homemade caramel (made with turbinado sugar), topped w/ vanilla ice cream, was scrumptious. All the beers on tap were an added bonus. Finally, the prices were reasonable."

  • "Always a hit with out of town guests and the fresh seafood selection is the best in the area. Lucky to be there on a night when they had the elusive Unicorn fish and we enjoyed both the fresh selection and the prepared meal, both were excellent! Scallops were also a standout as well as many of the sides - roasted brussel sprouts, potatoes and brie mac-n-cheese were favorites at our table."

  • "I had the blackened swordfish and we had the tuna nachos as an appetizer. Both were outstanding. My fiancé chose Alaskan King crab legs and voiced the same satisfaction. The bread salsa was delicious in advance of our meal as well. The service was particularly good. I only wish I could remember our server's name so I could grant kudos. I would definitely recommend Dean's."

  • "The food is delicious & the service/staff and ambiance are outstanding! It is a great place to celebrate birthdays or brunch with family and friends or even dine alone. I wish this restaurant was located in Asheville"

  • "The food was really good and I loved the jazz music in the background. Everyone at the table enjoyed the meal. The relaxed atmosphere was great, the service was great - no complaints at all and we will return."

  • "I'm originally from New England, and am a self-described seafood snob. Seafood at most restaurants is, at best, average, and typically a major disappointment. I've had some excellent seafood at the NC coast (local catches), but never anything worth getting again inland. I am happy to say that Dean's has the best seafood that I've had in NC (including the coast). They emphasize how fresh their seafood is, and they are not kidding. I had a swordfish steak and my wife had the scallops; both were perfectly prepared, and the accompaniments (e.g., avocado & tomatillo salsa) were fantastic, as were the side orders (e.g., grilled asparagus; toasted couscous; mac and cheese). Nice selection of beer & wine, great menu, and excellent service!"

  • "Well prepared with very good, hospitable service. Great selection of local and regional seafood. Nice twist on several of the side items. Great flavor without that "chain" feel to the food."

  • "Friendly Staff Casual Setting Quality of food could have been better for price range: fried platter was a bit greasy, crab dumplings taste good but had no crisp to them( soggy), 1 crab claw for $11 & signature slaw very bland."

  • "We have lived in Durham for 8 years and are always on the lookout for great seafood. A friend recommended Dean's and we were very pleased with our experience. Great fish selection, good looking special dishes and a nice wine/cocktail list. Very knowledgeable server. We will be back again!"

  • "This was our first time going to Dean's and we're still on the fence. We were greeted warmly and our server was very sweet and attentive, but had problems with the kitchen. We ordered the lobster and shrimp bisque, a house salad, the shrimp and scallop risotto with no peas, and the corvina sea bass. We were advised that the risotto would take 20-25 minutes, which was fine. Everything was really delicious once we got it, but first, the fish came without the risotto. When it arrived, it had peas in it, so they immediately took it back to make it correctly. The sea bass was under cooked. We sent it back twice to get it cooked all the way. The manager was very apologetic. We will return just to make sure it was an off night for the kitchen."

  • "This was a great experience again at Deans Friends from NY and Florida were impressed..... Food was wonderful and very tasty. There was one miss but the Wait Staff made up for it with out skipping a beat."

  • "Limited to the summer, the seafood boil met all my expectations. Plenty of mussels, clams, shrimp and crab legs as well as potatoes, sausage and corn. Served family style meaning all together in one pot sized for however many are in your party. It was exactly the right amount of food. Will definitely be back for this (maybe more than once) before Labor Day! Price is hefty ($28 per person) but everything else about it was perfectly satisfying."

  • "We've dined at Dean's numerous times and have never been disappointed. For whatever reason, service was incredibly poor....it took 35 minutes from the time the appetizer was cleared from the table to the time the entrees were served. My dinner was so boiling hot, that it couldn't be eaten and my husband's dinner was cold. Overall, it was disappointing, but I'm writing this off as one bad dining experience out of many wonderful meals. We will still go back and hope for better luck!"

  • "Recently celebrated my wife's birthday with another couple. Every dish and appetizer we ordered was delicious. The 4 of us dine together regularly and invariably someone always gets at least one thing that isn't quite up to par. Not so at Dean's. Everyone agreed that it was the best meal we had shared together in a long time. Looking forward to our next visit!"

  • "Took my husband, two children, and a friend here for my husband's 33rd birthday. Amazing menu, the waiter was excellent and attentive, drinks were divine, and the food was perfect! Great local choices which is a plus in our book! Will definitely be back in the near future!"

  • "We tried the Father's Day bruch which was a buffet. I usually like buffets for the volume rather than the food quality but this was certainly exceptional. The food quality was both very good and wide rangng. Each dish was very well prepared and the choices varied from the oysters on the half shell to the bread pudding at the end. Our server was very nice and attentive but not intrusive. I am looking forward to trying the regular Sunday brunch."

  • "Dean's made our Father's Day special! This is the best brunch we have been to in a long time! The food was excellent - the variety insured that everyone found something to enjoy. The service was excellent."

  • "I'm a seafood lover and this is one of the best!!!"

  • "After having had brunch a couple of other times at Dean's we decided to try it for Father's Day. The quality and quantity of the food selections were as good as usual. They did add pork ribs and brisket to the Father's Day menu and added $5.00 per person. Regardless, it is still a great value and the service was excellent. The only downside to this visit was the table location (too close to the kitchen and buffet line so there was always traffic). We will definitely continue to do Sunday Brunch at Dean's at least quarterly."

  • "Dean's is too much like Bonefish not to compete on price. The food is good and well prepared, but I am missing their competitive advantage against Bonefish. The menu is similar in that you pick your fish and an accompaniment. Dean's is local you want to support them over a chain, but I am missing why you would choose one over the other."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "The special of the night was a bone in rib eye. The price was reasonable but significantly higher than anything else on the menu. Two in our party decided to try it. At best it was disappointing. The steak was cut thinner and had more fat than one that you would get at low price streak chains (eg. Outback, Longhorn). As a result other than the fat it lacked flavor! We have dined at Deans several time before with mixed results. (food over or undercooked, specials not special) Deans is close to home and we would like it to be a viable alternative for dinner. I suggest they go to Firebirds (nearby and similar in price ) to check out their dinner offerings and quality, and also their dinner salad which is superior."
