Diner Reviews
  • "This tiny restaurant is located in a house near The Market. We had the tile fish special and strawberry shortcake. Yum!"

  • "After a long day of travel, we were so pleased with our dinner at Cru Cafe. The calamari is amazing! Don't decide on your order until after you hear the specials… we changed our minds and it was well worth it. Everything was delicious. Great wine options. Wish I'd had room for dessert! "

  • "Our second trip to Cru was even better than our first. From the extraordinary mushroom bisque my wife had to the amazing Orange Sherbet cake for desert, our meal was one of the best we've had. Cru will be a regular stop every time we're in Charleston."

  • "Food was straight forward and excellently executed but echo others noting it was cramped and waiting well past reservation"

  • "We were recommended to CRU by local friends, and we were not disappointed. It's a tiny little restaurant with no more than 10 tables. A reservation is a must, as waits can be over two hours. Would highly recommend for lunch- specifically the shrimp BLT and any of the soups. We will be back again!!"

  • "We had a lovely lunch at this Charleston gem...a single house with front porch dining. We enjoyed truffled mushroom soup, shrimp BLT, Chinese chicken salad, and soft shell crab over arugula and creamed corn. Everything was delicious and well presented."
    Dined on 4/17/2014
  • "Our party of four really enjoyed Cru Cafe for lunch. It's a small space so make sure you get a reservation. The food was delicious, but unfortunately they ran out of some items so we were disappointed."

  • "A smaller out of the way place, with tight quarters and no real place to wait for a table, the Cru serves up outstanding and innovative menu items in a attentive and knowledgeable way in a city with more restaurants that you can imagine. Make a reservation or come well before or after peak hours. A wonderful place that should not be missed."

  • "What can you say? I have eaten at fine, expensive restaurants all over the world and Cru Cafe is at the top of the list of the best places I have ever eaten. I try to get to Charleston a couple of times a year and always make a reservation for lunch at Cru Cafe. The staff is friendly and courteous....you don't have to ask for anything. The food is outstanding. The baked four cheese mac is to die for! Recommend it to anyone who says they are going to Charleston. Superb! "

  • "The fried Brie with figs were outstanding as was the calamari and the Mac and four cheese was outstanding. Chicken club was good but seemed to be missing something. The oyster wrap was very good as well. Service was attentive and pleasant."
    Dined on 4/9/2014
  • "Definitely will need reservations here. Shrimp BLT was a highlight and the soups were really good as well. Strawberry Shortcake was a tasty, light dessert. Tables are tight and noise level is fairly high. This is very close to all of the carriage rides so keep that in mind when planning your day. It is convenient to the market as well."

  • "The food and service was excellent the wine list was fine the acoustic of the room was poor so it was hard to hear each other when you talked"

  • "Reservations are a must unless you like waiting! Happy we booked through Open Table! Duck Confit Salad, amazing! Truffle, Parmesan fries a must! My friend had the Brie with pecans, figs and honey...loved it! Strawberry shortcake...over the top! A little pricey but totally worth it!"

  • "Cru' is an outstanding restaurant in a city of outstanding restaurants. We will eat there twice on any weekend we spend in Charleston. The food is outstanding, original and filling without being 'fru fru'. Great classic dishes with enough of a twist to make them really interesting, but not so much that you wonder if the chef is smoking something he shouldn't be."

  • "Visited with my wife a couple of weeks ago. Cru is an excellent find slightly off the beaten path. Portions are appropriately sized and complemented well by the wine list. If you enjoy interacting with the chef or watching over he kitchen, request seats at the smallish chef's table. We will return upon our next visit to Charleston."

  • "We ordered a dish that was supposed to be very flavorful. It was garlic scallops with spicy marinara. It was very bland. We couldn't taste much garlic and there wasn't much kick to the sauce. My husband and I both got the same dish and we were both disappointed."

  • "Ad always very consistent quality service and food. This is the best Charleston has to offer."
    Dined on 4/3/2014
  • "Had lunch with 3 friends and it was fabulous! Chicken Caesar salad and fried goat cheese salads were wonderful! The orange cake was extra special!"
    Dined on 4/3/2014
  • "Cru has become a favorite on our short list of "go to" restaurants when we visit Charleston. The food and service are top notch. My recommendation would be to dine earlier in the evening if you prefer a lower noise level. The restaurant is very small and can become very noisy later in the evening."
    Dined on 4/4/2014
  • "Food and service were excellent. There was an AC vent right under our table. They put a magazine in front of it to block the air, but was still a bit chilly. Food was really fresh. It would have been nice if they had split items in the kitchen rather than just bringing an extra plate. Maybe they do that to discourage sharing, but we like to order lots of different things and share. But would definitely highly recommend!"

  • "The food was superb and of good proportions. We were lucky enough to be seated at the chef's table for a close up view! Orange cream cake with coconut frosting was excellent."

  • "I love little venues like this -an older home. The host told us our table would be ready soon, we stood in the tight doorway hovering over other diners with a line behind us. We were seated at a tiny two top in the bar/kitchen room next to what I believe was the only other DR. The space is tiny/quite crowded; where I sat ppl brushed by every time someone went to the restroom. I had the Duck Confit Arugula Salad - it was hands down one of the best salads I have ever had, delicious-lots of juicy duck and a great melding of flavorsl. My bf had General Tso’s Chicken Caesar Wrap -while good, it wasn't anything special. All in all a great place to try but don't know if I'd go out of my way to park blocks away &squeeze in the crowd to go again."

  • "Delicious! Portions were just right, although I could eat just a meal of their four cheese macaroni.Butter leaf salad so good. We had the dinner special (Tile Fish). I would definitely go back and make reservations before I travel back to Charleston."

  • "Had lunch there. the food was excellent, as was the service."

  • "Solid food! Innovative dishes with good presentation. A bit crowded and can get a little noisy."

  • "We loved CRU! This place is tiny, so book well in advance. Hands down our favorite meal of our trip, we ate at Poogans, SNOB, Magnolias, and Halls so there was formidable competition. We had the duck confit salad, a tamale appetizer special, The poblano chicken, the pork shank, and raspberry and dark chocolate bread pudding. We appreciated that the menu was unique, many nearby have menus that are similar to one another, Cru's menu stood out as unique. Our server Johnny was the best we had on our trip, he enjoys his work and it shows. Beer and wine but no cocktails. It was quite chilly, wear a sweater. In spite of all the great options in CharlestonI wished we would have booked this place for lunch as well as dinner,, it was that good!"
