Diner Reviews
  • "We expected so much more for a restaurant affiliated with such an icon for food and service in SF. Service was lackluster, almost haughty. The food left much to be desired. I understand the most simple dishes require the most time and effort, and the caccio y pepe fell completely flat. It tasted like boiled pasta and oil, no delicate nuance of pecorino, black pepper, or even salt. The rest of the meal didn't do much to highlight the reputation of the restaurant. I'd skip it, there are so many other places in the city to get amazing pasta and much better service."

  • "Eating here is always enjoyable. Perfect for casual dinning with friends and family when the sun is out. At sundown light begins to dance off the bar. You can't help but notice romance sparking like the wood burning oven. Sunday Supper Suggestion: to fully enjoy the meal 3 out of 4 courses should be of interest. If you are skeptical of 2 courses save your reservation for another night. You may be served the same over-dressed garden salad at the company potluck or perfectly cooked pasta hijacked by too many anchovies. I can't wait to go back for an exciting menu that inspires me to try a new ingredient from the farmer's market."

  • "A former favorite stopped doing what they do well. Staff suddenly behaved as if sent by a temp agency, the once great food now extremely salty, their superior desserts now ugly and tasteless, the coffee weak. Watch your coat."

  • "Will give you the Cliff Note version of my review... Positives are great food, nice comfortable setting & vibe, top notch service (thanx Lilly). Minuses are LOUD, LOUD, LOUD! 3 of us dining. 1 of the 3 we hadn't seen in ages. Could not hear 1 thing, I mean 1 thing the other was saying!!! Please Cotogna, no need for a chef's table in this small environment as noise level makes it an incredible disappointment for other diners. And with that said, one addition...please allow more than 2 inches between tables as one cannot get ones 'behind' between the two to sit down. You can do better I know you can."

  • "This was to be a special dinner and I had previously eaten there in May as part of a large party. I ordered some of the same items - the Ricotta with the egg yolk which went from a 4 star to a 1 star: oversalted, thicker pasta shell and no flavor to the egg as it had been drowned out. The other pasta dishes were no better. This was on July 4 and one could not help think that maybe the chef was off and the replacements did not know what they were doing. The zucchini flower appetizer was over battered and over fried unlike that I had had only 2 months earlier. Nothing we had was memorable this time. In fact, the only memorable part was how bad the food was. Avoid this restaurant because dinner is hit or miss."

  • "We recently enjoyed dinner at the bar and had a wonderful experience. The food and wine were terrific (prosciutto and melon, pork roast, lamb shank, chocolate custard, Nebbllo) but the highlight was the attentive service from John the bartender. If you are near the Financial District, check this place out!"

  • "Just a terrific spot. Wonderful food, friendly and professional service, great vibe. Have returned many times and will continue to do so."

  • "Usually this is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. I have had several wonderful meals there in the past year. However, in late May I had an downright awful Sunday supper. They served a soft-shell crab that was a lump of salt. We told the waitress it was inedible and she gave us the "oh well" shrug. The appetizer was similarly underwhelming. I brought a friend visiting from Canada and was crushed about what an awful experience this was after having had great meals previously. My advice, stick to the pastas and avoid the set Sunday suppers."

  • "I'd meant to try Cotogna for years, but typically the only reservations available are at 5:30 or on Sundays when they do a set menu, which we don't like. Decided to go at 5:45 on Monday. The meal was good, particularly the cocktails, but despite the fact that they have a strict confirmation policy (I had to call them back to confirm, most equivalent restaurants just leave a voicemail and say to call them if plans have changed), several tables sat empty until we left at 7:15. I wish we could have eaten later, when we wanted. That said, our service was excellent, the menu had lots we wanted to try, and I might stop by some night again if in the neighborhood. Good, not great."

  • "This is a superb restaurant in every way. If I lived here, it would've my go to restaurant so I CPI.d explore the entire menu which changes. Since I visit, I always make it my first resto stop."

  • "We love Cotogna, and we especially love their Sunday supper. So wonderful to sit down at your table and have the experience begin, with your only decision as to whether or not to have the wine pairing. Halibut crudo, eggplant parmigiana, or the swordfish? Can't decide which was best, but it was all delicious, and you know whatever is on menu next week will be just as good. Late afternoon lunch is also one of our favorite times to eat here, but any time you go, you're in for a treat."

  • "When we read the menu we were not that impressed on the selections. They didn't look appealing in the write-up. However, when our waiter described the entrees in more detail we became quite interested. Everything we ordered was excellent. The one distraction was the noise level. One other comment is I specifically asked Jason that since I was the host the check should be presented to me. Unfortunately, he gave the check to our guest which was annoying."

  • "The prix-fix menu on Sundays is always interesting. On 6/15/14 the menu has everything my wife and I really enjoy. A red beet and blackberry salad, with burrata to start was well done. Second course of fresh pasta with squash blossoms and zucchini also so full of flavor with perfect pasta. Third course of Doc Watson lamb cooked over olive wood was so fresh and clean tasting. Desert of profiteroles just capped the whole experience with a bit of sweetness. The all Italian wine pairings are very interesting, and the server was very good about informing you about the wines. The Cotogna team is all about first rate food and service."

  • "Took a friend for her 30th birthday for lunch. I felt the menu was small. We shared a pizza (there were 2 choices), and a pasta dish. Again, good but not great. But, I am a critical in the Italian food area."

  • "I've eaten here about 50 times and love the food. However, Wednesday's meal was a disappointment. Both the Ravioli and Tagliatelle were hugely disappointing. The service was mediocre and the wine was so-so. I won't give up because I've had so many outstanding meals here, but I'm wary."

  • "Excellent restaurant in a great San Francisco neighborhood!"

  • "While our party of five old friends all enjoyed the food, ambience and service, we will not go back because we could not hear each other over the ambient noise. We eat out weekly and try to find restaurants which are exceptional. However, the best food is worthless if you have to shout to be heard and still can't tell what your friends are trying to talk about."

  • "This cozy little place, located next door to Quince and sharing a wine list, has quality cooking of its own. The food is simpler but well prepared, from buffalo mozzarella pizza to pesto gnocchi. The seasoning is done just right, and the bartender produces quality drinks, both off the menu and as requested. The place is a bit loud, at least during lunch, but not unpleasantly so. There are certainly fancier places for Italian cuisine in the area, for quick, quality cooking, this is a welcome addition to the neighborhood."

  • "Got there and was sandwiched between two loud couples, one of which was yelling to people at the other side of the restaurant. Waited an hour for drinks to be served although ordered promptly. Still no sign of food. Snagged the GM and he quickly had our gnocchi appetizer made which was tasteless due to a very watery sauce. The pork loin was dry as a bone, probably because it had been waiting under a heat lamp for an hour. The artichokes were totally inedible due to the spines and fibrous stems. Our waitress looked young and shell-shocked at the fast pace of this popular restaurant. To the GM's credit he didn't charge us for the meal although next time we come across this situation we will just walk out."

  • "Great food--but hard to have a conversation, which is the point of eating with ones friends."
    Dined on 6/6/2014
  • "This was my second time and the food was equally amazing. I did however find the seating to be uncomfortable cramped and awkward. We were the at a two person table, seated close to a large party. We could have essentially been part of their group - that's how close we were. "

  • "Best part: wild nettle gnocchi. Worst part: wood oven chicken. It was suck-all-the-moisture-from-your-mouth dry. Service was friendly, but the waitress spilled water when refilling. Manager brought us another plate of chicken that was cooked properly, so that was reassuring that they indeed know how to cook chicken. I don't think the food we got was worth the money. For $55 for a four course prix fixe, I'm going to compare you to Ad Hoc, and this wasn't even close to Ad Hoc. Maybe the regular menu is a lot better?"

  • "Hello I dined at Cotogna on Thursday, May 29th. The restaurant was great, but unfortunately my food order got mixed up, and by the time my right food order came out, my friend was through with his food. It was just sort of weird and in order to past the time to wait for the food we spoke with the guests at the table next to us, whom were really nice. Also the waiter who was very apologetic, poor girl, I guess she thought that she was going to get in trouble, but I did not want her to get in trouble, since it was a mistake. It just turned into me eating dinner by myself (meaning my friend was waiting for me to finish). "

  • "The food at Cotogna is excellent. The pastas, spit roasted pork loin, pizzas and salads are incredibly tasty and well presented. That being said, the portions are on the small side (except for the pizza). I like the large windows that let in just the right amount of sun during the day time."

  • "We keep coming back here because we know the food is always going to be a hit. This time was especially good with English pea tortelli for me and gnocchi for my beau. I'm not much of a gnocchi fan but ate some of his because it was THAT good. The only hiccup was the failure to bring my glass of wine when my primi piatto arrived as I requested. (I had started with prosecco.) But the waitress, upon realizing that I didn't have any wine, was kind enough to give me a complimentary quarter of a glass so I would have something to finish the remainder of my delish dish. "

  • "Perfect for early dinner with tourist friends who had walked around the city all day. Casual enough for them in walking clothes, but with the quality and superb culinary execution we wanted them to experience. Everything was exceptional, from the pastas to the bifstecca for 2-3, a thick bone-in porterhouse cut to share. Both of the beef lovers at the table stated it was "the best steak they'd ever had" and these guys frequent high-end steak places. Thank you Cotogna for a wonderful meal and for capping off a terrific day in the city for our friends!!!"

  • "I work in the area & have been wanting to come here for a long time. The appetizers we got were "ok" - the beet salad & calamari - but not as creative or flavorful as I would have thought they would be even tho the calamari was very good since it was fresh. The sausage nettle pizza was great. Love the crust. I make my own pizza & have been to all the SF pizza restaurants & I must say, this is one of the best crusts I've had. Also, the spicy red pepper sliced into the pizza was very good. "

  • "The food, as usual, was great. The service, however, left a lot to be desired. It took forever to get drinks. When the food arrived, it was left on the table with no panache (or smile), no one checked if we liked what we were eating. Overall, it felt as if the servers were food runners rather than professionals who were proud of their restaurant. And, while I understand someone has to sit there, the table behind the greeter's station is one frigid place; we had to eat dinner with out coats on and this isn't how I had "sold" the restaurant to my spouse. Very disappointing (but the food was very good)."

  • "We have dined at Cotogna several times and enjoy their changing menu of wonderful pastas, pizzas and antipasti dishes. The food never disappoints. Service is always spot on and it has a good vibe that is casual, encourages conversation yet is entertaining to people watch, if that's what you want to do! Nice selection of wines by the glass. "

  • "My sister and I loved loved our lunch at Cotogna last week. The food is remarkable, I can close my eyes and swear I'm in Italy again, the ingredients stand out as do the care in the pasta preparation, my sister had the rigatoni with the lamb polpettine and it "squirted" flavors to the back of your cheekbones! It was a special day for her birthday, thank you very much for the wonderful lasting experience! Suzanne Farrell"

  • "The noise level was so high amd it was so noisy. It was difficult to have conversations with my family who was dining with me.. Service was rather disappointing as well, given that the service tax and tips were compulsory. The service was not attentive and i had to look for the waitress a few times and she was inexperienced as well. She had problems opening a champagne bottle and had to get help.. And she gave the wrong plates and cultery for the second course."

  • "I was concerned about the service after reading several reviews but I'm happy to say we had great service. We were seated on time for our 7:45 reservation and the server did a very good job reviewing the menu with us since it was our first time there. I would recommend the Raviolo di ricotta."
