Diner Reviews
  • "The menu portions are very, very small but visually extremely appealing and, in most cases, an achievement in flavors and of unique combinations - very sophisticated with the food textures well thought out and balanced. This clearly is a place where you need to take time to savor your experience - overall, we took close to 2 1/2 hours on our visit. The staff is very efficient but somehow lacking in warmth. With such a limited menu you would not expect anything else but attention to the diner's needs. Overall clearly a culinary experience but perhaps the atmosphere/ambiance is a bit lacking in warmth - my wife called it "robotic" and I have not found a better term for it. I would give it 5 stars if not for this shortcoming."

  • "Small plates exquisitely composed, rich flavors, wind pairing very carefully chosen. Delightful meal - but don't go unless you're a real foodie."

  • "Commis lives up to all that we have heard about it! Every detail was a delight to our senses. The food was exquisite and the wine pairings were delicious and fun. Absolutely art on every level!"

  • "With new décor and super comfy seats at the Chef's counter this is hands down the finest dining experience in this part of the world. With a superb wine list it is the pairings that border on perfection-the finest I've yet experienced. Champagne with pacific halibut and Chateaunuf du Pape with red beetroot with blueberry vinegar and smoked cheese and ash were the standouts. Many new faces that are even better than the founding service staff-if that is possible. Chef James has created a masterpiece well worth repeated visits over time."

  • "Wow! What a special spot. Every bite was delicious. Most especially the Gooseberries and basil, tomato water, frozen buttermilk! A very special restaurant, we will definitely return! So lucky to have this special spot in our backyard."

  • "Wonderful meal, 7 courses with pairings. Although not inexpensive and portions are small, the flavors and wine pairings make it the most fantastic meal we have found in Oakland."

  • "Unique and tasty menu, perfectly paired with just the right wines. Service is attentive but not invasive and the atmosphere is almost meditative. Well worth the price - it will become our special occasion local."

  • "Outstanding tasting menu. For the wife and I , this is our fifth time. The wine pairing is as exceptional as the food. Our servers have been knowledgeable, gracious, and fun to spend an evening with."

  • "This is the third time I have eaten here, and it has become my favorite restaurant in the Bay Area. The food is superb, and each dish is beautifully presented. Service is unhurried and attentive without being intrusive. I took friends here, and about a month later we ate at Chez Panisse. Our verdict was that, hands down, Commis was the clear winner. There are deft hands at work in the kitchen, and it shows in the overall dining experience."

  • "We loved the food and presentation...inventive creative and unexpected!!! The only problem is that both my wife and I left the dinner still kind of hungry. We generally do not eat much at restaurants...mostly sharing an entree. With the prefix at $95.00 each we both felt like the meal was missing some protein. We loved the restaurant but felt like it disappointed in the satisfaction area."

  • "My girlfriend and I had the tasting menu with (thoughtful) wine pairings and were thoroughly impressed. Every dish was excellent, but three stood out. One was a warm peach soup with mustard leaf ice, pickled fennels, and almonds prepared like crème fraîche. The contrasts - of textures, tastes, and temperatures - were striking. The soup was heterogenous, so you would get a single bite that would change from smooth peach to crystalline mustard ice as you ate. Rather the opposite was a superbly balanced dish of pickled beetroot, thick blueberry vinegar, smoked cheese, lemonthyme, and "vegetable ash" sprinkled on the plate. Last was a simple "mushroom tea" that transported us both back to our childhoods, eating Campbell's soup from the stove."

  • "Truly an experience, not just a meal. the food was beautiful, so meticulous and interesting. The flavors were thoughtful, different and fun! the wine pairings and the sommelier who attends to you were absolutely fantastic. watching the chefs assemble the dishes at the chef counter was so much fun! our waitress was a bit dour, I imagine that is intended but it is a bit off putting rather than classy. Overall really nice for a very special dinner!"

  • "and again and again... we LOVE this restaurant...they set the bar high and go higher each time in creativity, service, wine pairings... each time we have dinner there we are sooooo happy with the food and ambiance and everything! this is our place for special occasions and for just great dining... we will be back!!! "

  • "Impeccable service, imaginative food, unhurried dining....with prices to match. The wine pairings boosted the evening. This is destination dining, an experience to be lingered over, and the restaurant allowed us to do so. The explanations of the food and wine were both informative and entertaining. But, given the prices, I expected nothing less."

  • "The food was amazing, among the best that we've ever had, we just wish that there had been a bit more of it! Every course was beautifully presented and wonderful tasting. The service was excellent and we especially appreciated that the restaurant treated my husband's severe nut allergy with a great deal of care."

  • "Our best meal to date here. We went to Saison last Saturday but have to say we enjoyed Commis so much more. The beef course was just off the chart good. We always leave wondering why we do not come here so much more often."

  • "When I dine out I want to be wowed. And Commis delivered. Not every course was mind bending but enough were that I was really happy. Service was a little raw (our server admitted she had only been working there for a week) but the sommelier made up for her nervousness. Also the wine pairing was a great compliment. I am not a huge connoisseur of wine, but there were quite a few pairings that absolutely made sense and elevated the food. For the price, you really can't beat it. Where else can you eat at a top notch restaurant for $150 including wine pairings? "

  • " The service has been outstanding throughout. The hostess seated us in the back, away from the bar, which is more private and quieter, and I really appreciated that. The sommelier's very knowledgeable. The pairings of wine enhanced both the food and wine and well-balanced. The food prep was innovative (which I expected), although I'm not sure the various ingredients enhanced each other in some of the dishes. But when it did, the results were great - like the lemon blossom glace in chamomile tea. I especially like the intense flavor of the tisane of mushrooms. The texture of the hailbut was perfect, although it was a little salty for our taste, as was the beef. But overall we enjoyed the food, presentation, and the excellent service. "

  • "A wonderful dinning experience in a minimalist decor. The food and service wonderfully presented. A lovely visual, tactile, and tasting event we won't soon forget. The wine parings were spot on and enhanced the already perfect courses. East bays answer to the French Laundry"

  • "Every dish is so enjoyable. We especially love all the fish dishes we have here. Only complaint is we always want more of the fish course for it is so perfectly prepared. Just stellar!"

  • "After planning for two years, my wife and I finally went to Commis for a celebration. It is expensive, however by the pricing standards common to Michelin star restaurants both here and, for instance, in Berlin, actually on the reasonable side. The restaurant serves a series of one or two bite (or spoonfuls) of absolutely exquisite tastes, one after the other (I think we had about 9 of them). There is no choice but they are very very responsive to requests having to do with food prohibitions of any sort and accommodate to them. Let me just say that each of the foods was a brilliant experience. Our favorite (both of us independently) was the morels in a creamy sauce. Go and Enjoy!"

  • "My fiance and I went to Commis on a Saturday night looking for a nice, special occasion date night. It definitely delivered! The food was exquisite, and the wine pairings were perfection. We couldn't have asked for a more delicious meal. However, we both left a little hungry (actually, he was still VERY hungry) and our pockets were much lighter. This restaurant offers an incredible experience, but in all honesty, it is WAY overpriced. For example, we went out the next night with 6 other people (total of 8 people) for sushi and saki and our bill was exactly the same as Commis for 2 people. In conclusion, delicious meal and a great experience, but VERY pricey."

  • "My wife and I recently completed a thirty day Bay Area food odyssey, starting with a three star, next to a two star and culminating with a one star. We definitely saved the best for last. All of these dining experiences were remarkable, but Commis was fantastic, and not by imperceptible measures. The wine pairings won by a full length, not just a head. Each course was exceptionally creative, tasty and memorable. I left one star off of ambience only because I think the joy of such art should always shine through, but maybe working at such a place just gets you used to it. Thank you again, Karen and Thomas. "

  • "this is one of my wife and my favorite place to splurge on a dinner. every course was above average and contained many taste bud explosions. while the prices are slowly creeping up, it is still a great value especially compared to San Francisco. out of the eight courses, only the halibut was a little bit of a letdown. and it was still very good. I highly recommend."

  • "The wine pairing with the 7 course meal was impressive. No wonder you're a 1 star. You should get more."

  • "This is a top notch restaurant and probably one of the best in the East Bay. 7 courses are listed, but by the time the night is done, and you add in the amuse-bouches, intermezzos, and other treats, you're looking at a very fulfilling experience, at an incredible value. Expect quality ingredients, sprinkled with a bit of molecular gastro, topped with edible flowers. I ate the most well cooked piece of halibut ever, and I still think about the texture of the pea puree it sat on top of. It was so good, we thought it was the finale dish, only to be surprised by the incredible veal that came out after. The chef's table looked to be a very fun experience that you'll need to personally call or email ahead to request. "

  • "We recently dined at Commis for an anniversary celebration. We had a great time and each of the courses was interesting. The two main courses, a pacific halibut with pea porridge and wild legumes and a ginger fumet along with a poached veal breast, grilled cauliflower and alliums with horseradish, were cooked perfectly and melted in your mouth. We only had one course that we didn't care for, and that was a goat's butter ice cream with green almonds and germinated grains covered in a fava leaf soup. We felt like the fava leaf soup overpowered the dish and the other ingredients were drowned out, plus we didn't care for the taste of the fava leaf soup (too green and earthy for us). "

  • "The food at Commis is a work of art. It's pleasing to the eye and you get amazing flavors in each bite. It's the perfect place for a special occasion or if you're looking for an extra-ordinary culinary experience. "

  • "We had the prefix menu ($95) with wine paring ($55) and both were absolutely incredible. The pairing of the wines with the individual dishes was spot on. Each dish was exquisite, methodically prepared, and plated perfectly. A truly amazing dining experience from beginning to end."

  • "we ADORE having a special night at commis because we know we will always be astonished at the chef's continual reach for new and delicious and seasonal food experiences...and this dinner was no exception to the rule. the service is seamless, the food beyond imagination delicious, the setting quiet and the wines extraordinary. we will be back!!!"

  • "Wine for each pairing came five minutes before the food, so impossible to remember why it was chosen to fit. Tastes were separated on each dish, for sure, but the actual tastes were boring and often did not even taste like food. More like eating a random leaf in the garden. Very slow delivery of food, and restaurant not busy. Portions minuscule even for a tasting menu, so in mid meal, they brought multiple pieces of bread to fill up on. Only meat dish was veal that was half fat, with the only red wine pairing tasting like the 5 cent special at BevMo. Utterly unimpressive, felt totally ripped off."
    Dined on 4/11/2014
  • "The tasting menu featured only one meat dish (and hence one dish paired with white wine). Out of seven courses, and at this price point, you expect more, especially as the one meat course was decidedly mediocre (poached veal has a pretty low ceiling). To be fair, each of the seafood courses was executed beautifully - it just would have been nice to have some pork, or steak, or suck, or chicken, or something you that would give a more savory taste (and that you could pair with a nice red - I think I'm not too unusual in strongly preferring red to white. I talked to a friend who had a similar experience a few months ago. I won't be going back."

  • "Interesting well prepared and presented food. Exceptional wine list. Service a bit cold at first but warmed during the evening. Worthy of its Michelin star."

  • "The chef did a great job of accommodating my guest's food restrictions: vegetarian, gluten-intolerant, lactose-intolerant. We both had an amazing meal. The small, beautifully composed bites make for a wonderful tasting experience. We tried the wine pairings and were quite pleased. My favorite lesson of the night is that I LOVED the 1927 solera sherry. I generally don't like oxidized wines, but this one tasted less like nutty oxidation, and more like molasses."

  • "Commis continues to do an astounding job. The wine pairings were quite nicely done, with some very interesting selections - independent of the food. The halibut course was astoundingly nice. I like that Commis is not feeling obliged to dip into the chemistry set, as so many at this level do. Just great food, very thoughtfully prepared. This was a much more coherent, and thoughtful meal than the one that I had at Benu or Tres/Bazaar."
