A word from Co Nam
I love food, and everything that goes into preparing a meal to be shared with family, relatives, and friends. Enjoying a meal with a glass of wine brings back those dearest memories of my childhood spent moving and traveling through Vietnam, Laos & Thailand.

Co Nam, brings comfort Vietnamese food and the occasional twists to a set that are the bits and pieces of my childhood memories. Cá Kho Tộ (Caramelized Basa Fish Clay-pot), and Thịt Kho (Braised Pork Belly) are a couple of dishes that I often cook with my mother over an open hearth; but in retrospect, I enjoyed eating a lot more.

On behalf of my staff, we look forward to seeing you and your family. We hope you enjoy the food, drinks, and atmosphere as much as we enjoyed putting them together.

  • "Four of us shared several dishes and all were excellent. Spring rolls, filet mignon, clay pot medley, vermicelli with pork, salad, allfresh and flavorful. Terrific, friendly wait staff who did not rush us, so we had a nice leisurely meal. Good selection of beers and cocktails. We saw a couple of people happily eating solo at the bar. We definitely will return."

  • "I've walked by Co Nam countless times over the past few months after moving to the Russian Hill/Polk Gulch area. I planned dinner for a girls night with two friends and figured we'd try somewhere new. Food: - Roll Sampler - Garlic Noodles - Lemongrass Chicken with rice three items were plenty for the three of us ladies to share, in the future I would encourage my group to pick two or three most intrigueing rolls instead of doing the sampler Service: Well paced, was not rushed through our selection but the waittress checked in every few minutes to see if we had come to a decision or not yet Ambiance: Deep rather than wide space, really cool moss wall in the back, whimsical elements like a rice terrace sink in the restroom."

The food was prepared quickly and deliciously. Every dish was great. we had the Sheken Beef, The Pork Chops and the 5 Spice Chicken. The service was excellent. We would definitely recommend it and return. Parking was difficult. Leave at least an hour for a leisurely dinner."

  • "Had a group of 8 for New Years dinner here. Despite late seating due to slow turnover the staff did nicely to help us enjoy our wait at the bar. Food was nicely executed for such a busy night. Everything came in a reasonable pace and most dishes had good flavor. The noodle dish could use something extra; it's not bad but just a little bit on the dry and plain side. Filet Mignon dish and clay pot dishes were flavorful fresh and unique."

  • "What a surprising find! Post Grace Cathedral holiday service, had interesting, delightful meal. From the unusual martini (made with rice wine and vermouth and mysterious flavors) to the appetizers (rice wraps, veg and pork, both outstanding) to the shaken beef (heavenly, tender) and my rice noodle beef lemongrass salad (perfect blend of cooked and fresh) to the mango sticky rice and coffees, we were in food heaven. And it was QUIET ! I can't stand noisy restaurants and this was near perfect. Bartender (perhaps the owner?) was informative and solicitous. Highly recommend."

But the other servers picked up the slack and even though they didn't visit our table often, once we placed our order the food came quickly. Definitely should try this place."

  • "The restaurant is a modern interpretation of Vietnamese food. Unfortunately the specialty drinks were weak.Amongst the appetizers, the squab was exellent. The Claypot( basa fish and chicken medley were also outstanding. The basil chicken was ok . The dessert were good except for the rice cake with mango which was lacking in flavor and was quite dry. Overall the service was attentive. prices were moderate for a vietnamese cuisine striving to be Slanted door"

  • "My wife and I had such a good time last Friday (8/2/2013) that we went back the following night. Food is beyond great, service and ambiance really set the mood (it was our Anniversary). The owner (Trung Nguyen) was delightful and took the time to chat with us about his new restaurant. We tried the Spicy Devil Wings for appetirzers...WOW, I sure wish they delivered to So. Cal. For dinner we had the Grilled-Five-Spice Chicken and Basa Fish Claypot and the Braised Chicken Claypot and Shaken Beef the second...words can not describe the favors, AND, the presentation made each dish special. We are definately going back the next time we are in SF....I recommend this to ANYONE that enjoys GREAT food and a wonderful atmosphere to dine."

  • "Spring rolls were good but the pork was over cooked. The lettuce was tougher than expected and the sauce was great. Co Nam clay pot tasted very good, was very hot(temperature), it was a healthy portion, but the rice in the bottom was a bit oily. The steak cubes were excellent. This dish was quite warm, done just right and beautiful. Service was impeccable."

  • "I was out here on a Tuesday at 7pm for a date. Not the most ideal time for a restaurant, but this is Polk Street in SF. Everything is always packed. From 7pm - 8pm, there were two other parties seated, and one of them was one woman who may have been asleep(?). The decor and the ambiance, in theory, was modern and swanky. My stir-fry was a very average stir-fry, but the drink menu was solid. Again, it's an earlier dinner on a Tuesday, but after leaving, every surrounding place on Polk was packed except for Co Nam. Strange."

Highly recommend the Omely Wrap appetizer... and, yes, the chili bird peppers are hot but don't shy away from them. The Basa Fish Clapot is as good as I've eaten. Can not say enough good things about the food!"

  • "Our experience at Co Nam was excellent. We were able to get a cute little table in the back, the ambience is nice and the servers friendly. We ordered a bunch of small plates. From the soup, to the shrimp paste on sugar cane, to the quail, and the lettuce wraps it was tip top. We didn't particularly enjoy the jicama / apple salad, but we'd gladly go back again to try 5 more dishes."

  • "Went in for the Valentine's Day prix fixe menu and was impressed. The sweet and sour soup was a notable appetizer - huge (more than enough for an entree for two), big chunks of fresh white fish, great fresh pineapple flavor. We both got vermicelli bowls (one pork, one chicken) and those were great as well. Certainly a step up from the $7.50 corner Vietnamese vermicelli, but not overly fancy and portions were still huge. Free glasses of champagne made the night even better. Only knock is that service was particularly slow (we were there for almost 2 hours) but it is a new restaurant and they were completely filled; the server was very nice and informative."

  • "This restaurant has a lot of potential. The ambience is great and the food is good. However, I would suggest that they work on hiring more experienced wait staff. Our experience was less than optimal from that perspective. Our waiter lacked the experience and skills to appropriately serve a large party. He struggled to communicate effectively with the group and was slow to respond to drink requests. We also had several food items that were late and he did not proactively communicate about those issues either. One person got her appetizer well after her entree was delivered and a few others got their entrees well after most of the table was finished eating. In addition, he did not bus the table efficiently."

My group throught it was excellent - the starters, summer rolls, ahi and others were great. Server was helpful and present just the right amount. Wine list was affordable and good, could go up a notch on the ladder once the place is better known. Mains were excellent, hot, fresh, and vibrant. We will go back again, and have done so once already."

  • "This was my third visit to Co Nam - two dinners and one lunch. We sat at the bar the first time and met the bartender/owner who was very helpful and enthusiastic about his food, making recommendations, etc. The food is excellent and there are always specials in addition to the menu. I had one lunch and another dinner at the table. These were all excellent - food, service, ambience and drinks! I will definitely go back as we live in the neighborhood. This part of Polk Street desperately needed something of this caliber with a hip and friendly vibd. I hope it is here to stay. It is friendly, well thought-out, inventive and extremely delicious."

  • "This restaurant has a nice, upscale feel--this neighborhood could use a few more restaurants like this. However, I thought our server was a little obtrusive. The food was okay and a little over priced for what you get. The place just opened it seems like they're still ironing out some problems (ie. big plates and small tables, serving whole bok choy and only providing chopsticks, etc). I wouldn't go out of your way to stop by here, but if you're in the neighborhood it's definitely a pleasant, mid-priced Vietnamese restaurant. Btw, the "Vietnamese yogurt" dessert is totally just vanilla yogurt. Asked our server what was Vietnamese about it and he couldn't really answer."
