A word from City Cafe
On the northwestern edge of University Park sits an exceptional white-tablecloth neighborhood bistro. The menu changes seasonally, but it retains the relaxed New American-California character that has been the restaurant’s trademark since 1985. Impressing even distinguished American chef Julia Child, for over two decades City Café has been widely recognized in Texas Monthly, Food & Wine Magazine, Zagat, Wine Spectator, D Magazine, and was also recipient of AAA’s “Diamond Award”.Continued

  • "This is our favorite place for an exceptional meal. We like to take friends & guests too. It is not loud so you can enjoy your wonderful meal and visit comfortably. The staff is amazing.. Very attentive & they enjoy telling you about the food and specials of the day. Wine list is great too, and staff is familiar with the wine."

  • "My family all flew in from all over to see my son in a Play production. We met for dinner before the show. There were 10 in our party, some showed up a little late, and we only had 1 hour. I let them know of our situation, and they expedited everything, drinks, apps, dinner all in our time frame and it did not seemed rushed. The food was excellent, and the staff the same."

  • "SO happy to see many former L'Ancestral waitstaff and DINERS enjoying City Cafe. As ever, the food is wonderful."

  • "Went with friends from our building. We never had been there but they have many times. They like the quietness. Swordfish was described as a steak, it was not. More of a filet but very good. Pork chop Milanese, too thick and dried out. Salads, bread and sides very good."

  • "We love this restaurant. Great food and service! They were having a special open mixer while we were there and we got to see the private dinning rooms. Great set up!"

  • "It had been quite a while since my husband and I had been to City Cafe, and we'll have to remember it for another great time and delicious meal. The service was attentive, the menu interesting, and the food plentiful."

  • "We had not been to City Cafe in a long time mainly due to more frequent casual dining. What a treat we have been missing! The food was prepared perfectly, and wonderfully delicious. The portion sizes were well-sized; we didn't leave feeling stuffed or without room for sharing a dessert. The service was impeccable. The host, Karim, and our server were most gracious and took a personal interest in our dining experience without being intrusive in any way. Dining at City Cafe provides a great atmosphere for a special evening!"

  • "We don't live in Dallas, but we have eaten at City Cafe several times when we have been in town. Our other visits have been very enjoyable, but this time the food was not up to the standards we have come to expect. My veal was REALLY tough, and the sauce was bad. My husband had the pork which was much better than mine, but nothing to rave about."

  • "City Cafe is a very nice cozy spot for dinner and/or drinks. . . The staff is very cordial and attentive. . The establishment provides personal attention to their clients and greet you both coming and going. The food selection is very good and prepared as ordered. A great place for dining. . ."

  • "I knew we were in trouble when we didn't order wine or cocktails. The waiters attitude changed immediately, he became non-attentive and virtually disappeared. Our salads didn't show up. We were sure we had been forgotten. We finally got bread and our iced tea but then were promptly ignored again. No one came to refill our tea or water, ask if we needed anything, and finally our entrees showed up. It was only then we were able to tell the person who brought our food that our salads had not been served. I asked them to remove the salads from our bill and the sever had to go check with someone to see if it was OK. We didn't see anyone until our waiter FINALLY stopped by to say he was sorry about our salads, would we like dessert. We left."

  • "Anticipating an uplifting meal on Valentine's Day, but turned out poorly. Restaurant overbooked. Seated in a makeshift off room. Waited two and a half hours for main meal. Service woefully understaffed. Serviced incorrect drinks and food. The final blow was delivery of the wrong main meal. Ordered Filet Steak medium, received Fish poorly overcooked. By the end of the experience, I nearly broke a tooth biting into the last pience of hardened toast left in the basket. I was starving for food."

  • "I was looking for a quite place to visit with friends over a great meal and excellent wine. City Cafe turned out to be a perfect spot. The food was excellent, the wine list extensive and the service was very relaxed, friendly and helpful in a way that made my party feel we had been regulars for years. If you are looking for a place to spend a quiet, relaxed and upscale evening having your taste buds delighted, then City Cafe is the place for you."

  • "The food is outstanding, and the service is great and it has a very loyal clientele because it's reliably good. It's been there forever even with the change in management and chef and a change in menu (both a change for the better although these are not recent changes). As an aside.....The Dover Sole special that day was fantastic, BUT I would ask what the market price is for any special as it could be almost twice the price of the entrees on the regular menu (the prices here are fairly reasonable), which was a bit of a shock. I would go there again because the food is great."

  • "a standby for good food, good service, and a place to catch up with friends over fine food in a quiet place where conversation can take place."

  • "Our table wasn't ready. We were sent to the bar for a 15 minute wait and there was no bartender. After waiting patiently we finally got a drink. When we were seated the hostess gave us a menu. The manager took a drink order and a harried waiter stopped by and said I will be back in a Few minutes. The restaurant was definitely understaffed for a Saturday evening when it was full. The food was good but the poor service and the long wait for our entree to arrive definitely effected the pleasure of a nice evening out. We probably wont go back."

  • "Various restaurants have different things to offer. Each should do a good job of whatever they choose. City Cafe does a great job of offering: very good food with professional service in a quiet dignified atmosphere. It's wonderful for those of us who want a nice place to have a quiet meal with friends. It's our favorite for an up-market dinner."

  • "I find myself going to City Cafe more and more. I know the food will always be good and it's a place where you can actually have a dinner conversation without having to yell across the table."

  • "We decided at the last minute to go to City Cafe and it was very nice. Sunday night must be their slow night as we were one of one four tables with a couple of people at the bar. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable and the food arrived correctly and promptly. My scallops were delicious and the other dishes ( orange duck and Caroline's chicken were good as well. We'll definitely go back! The one thing we forgot was the coupon for 25% off!"

  • "We had dined at City Cafe several years ago and decided to return recently after a friend suggested (several times) for us to return. We enjoyed ourselves with various salads, entrees and desserts. They have a great wine list, too. I am looking forward to coming back again soon, too!"

  • "We made a reservation and received confirmation. When we arrived they said they did not have us, we said it was through open table and then they found it and said open table overbooked and they would seat us in 15-20 minutes. While at the restaurant AFTER checking in at 7:15 I received an email saying the restaurant was overbooked and could not take us. My cell phone was on the reservation and I was not contacted. After 45 minutes we decided to leave. Someone made a mistake which happens but the restaurant hostess was rude and we were not contacted by anyone."

  • "Over 20+ years, this has been our "go to" restaurant for special dinners with family and friends. The food -- outstanding. The atmosphere -- calm, understated, and quiet. But, don't go on a major holiday. Our New Year's Eve meal was a crushing disappointment. The staff turned our table -- drinks, appetizer, entrees and coffee in LESS THAN ONE HOUR. We were rushed, stalked, wait staff looming in our peripheral vision, as the Captain openly muttered orders to keep things moving. We food was still outstanding. The Crab Louis appetizer ($18) and the Diver Sea Scallops ($35) were both magazine-worthy. The kitchen stood-up to the over-booked holiday challenge, but the front of house failed. The bill $170. Our New Year's celebration, 55 minutes."

  • "Normally this is great neighborhood restaurant with good service, but this time, the service was terrible. We had reservations for 7pm and were not seated for 45 minutes because no tables were available. Even we we made it to the table, it was another 15 minutes before the waiter showed up and then it was only to apologize saying that he had another table to attend before he could get to us. The slow service continued all evening. As an example, the warm bread that was supposed to be delivered with the main course was delivered to our table after we finished eating. The restaurant could have made adjustments & helped the waiter, as there was a manager, assistant manager, & two hostesses all standing around not doing anything to help."

  • "This is a fantastic restaurant - great food - super wine list and Charlotte is a true gem. We had the grilled flounder - fantastic - the salmon greek salad - outstanding - and the grilled pork chop - super. The calamari for a starter was beautifully done and our wine was marvelous and Charlotte brought us some phenomenal dessert. Very handy complementary valet parking and super nice staff. We go here for lunch every time we are in Dallas and dinner if we can work it in. Highly recommend this lovely spot"

  • "Celebrated a birthday with a good friend. The omelets were flavorful and remained hot throughout the meal. Their signature dessert, the Blum's Caramel cake was decadent and delicious. It's a must have here. Always excellent service both for lunch and dinner. The owner is most gracious and welcoming."

  • "The food was very good. The menu had a nice range and there were a number of a pencils that sounded temting. While the food was good it was outdone by the outstanding service. Although my first visit I felt like I had been a frequent guest. It was comfortable and relaxing."

  • "New menu is outstanding. Duck breast was perfect, pork chop (butterflied, pounded and lightly breaded) was so tender and tasty, sea bass was beautiful. Service was very professional and attentive without being a pest. We love this restaurant."
