Diner Reviews
  • "This is the perfect place for a business lunch in Baltimore. Parking was reasonably easy, service was fast and efficient, and the food was great. The grilled tuna salad was perfect. My mouth waters just thinking about the salmon BLT, and the beef tenderloin salad is great. "

  • "City Café is a classic eatery that evolves in time, but, remains fixed in almost perfect perfection. The staff are a continual joy and patiently professional. The menu maintains items that would interest all tastes with a chef's staff that maintains consistency in quality and preparation. City Café lights your way to an entertaining evening with great food. Keep rocking!"

  • "I can't count the times we've been here and I'm sorry I haven't reviewed it before. Symphony tickets? City Cafe reservations. No-brainer. For years I ate nothing but the lamb burger - yummy! and with the greek salad it's really a wonderful mix. Lately we've been fans of the steak frite, and we have also enjoyed other dishes. Take advantage of the specials if they sound good to you. A special word about the wine list and the service - wines are reasonably priced and the wait staff really understand each wine. Several wines that are in our cellar all the time were wines we learned about at City Cafe. The only downside is that it can be so noisy..."

  • "We hadn't been to City Café in a while, and we wanted to check out the new bar. Wow! We had a terrific dinner. The food really improved over our previous visits. We're a little confused about the new layout of the first floor though. Does this mean City Café is no longer a place for a cup of coffee in the afternoon while working on a laptop? Or is this behavior still encouraged but now in a more upscale setting? We're not sure. But we are sure that this is an agreeable dinner spot now. (Upstairs is still loud, which costs this review one star.) "

  • "Food was good and prices moderate. Our server was not the best but I don't think it was a reflection of the entire staff. The customers were diverse with hipsters, artsy people etc. If you have children and do not want them around the Club Hippo crowd then you have been warned. Overall it was a great restaurant, with great coffee, and good food. It might not be the best breakfast in Baltimore but it’s in the top ten. Maybe top five."

  • "We must eat gluten free and there were plenty of excellent choices, including dessert. The food was delicious and the presentation was beautiful. The appetizers were excellent. We had the beet and tuna - different combination, but excellent. The Asian pear salad was superb. The cod with mushroom entree was excellent, served with tasty black eyed peas in an attractive cast iron dish. The flourless chocolate cake was scrumptious, and the Takahara Brothers ice cream was a delight. The coffee was very good. We usually add cream and sugar, but not necessary with this great tasting coffee. Great place to eat before the BSO performance. This was our first visit, but we will definitely be back."

  • "the oysters were not fresh; their meats were not whole. The cod was OK but arrived with a little frying pan of black-eyed peas that tasted as though they'd just been poured from a can. This meal was not worth more than $10."

  • "We go to City Cafe before every BSO show and we LOVE it! The food is consistently excellent and the waiters are fabulous. We usually get the same waiter--she's been there a long time and is very attentive and helpful."

  • "Had brunch here with my sister last weekend - it was busy but the service was fast and the food delicious! They served cinnamon buns while we waited for our food. So tasty and nice!"

  • "I've now been to City Cafe twice for brunch, and both times I've left thinking "that was the best brunch I've ever had." The croque madame and the berries and whipped cream are incredible. Our waiter was attentive and helpful, and even on a nice sunny Saturday morning, there was no wait. I would highly recommend City Cafe for brunch."

  • "We always have enjoyed our meals at City Cafe. The menu has a nice selection of lighter plates as well as full entrees. The rockfish special was excellent and the mushroom ravioli is always reliable. It does get a little noisy."

  • "City Cafe was awesome, they were able to seat us right away after being late for our reservation and the hosts were understanding. The service was great, the food was delicious. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for a new restaurant to try. Only thing is the berger cookie ice cream on the desert menu, they didn't make it anymore but other than that everything was wonderful."

  • "Monday has a discounted entree menu for $16, which allowed me to try some other appetizers I wouldn't normally order. Our server, Heidi, was delightful and efficient. My steak was cooked exactly as I asked. Another good visit to City Cafe!"

  • "Haven't been back to Mt Vernon and City C. in a few years. . .still great!! Loved the little Lamb chop Lollipops Small plate with beet "ravioli"...yum! GREAT veggie burger and nice reasonably priced wines by the glass. Fun dinner with 5 friends. Had to skip the AMAZING Bloody Marys that we usually have at brunch. Next time. * We had a res for 6 pers on a Fri night. They had us upstairs and we had to switch because of mobility issues. No prob. Host had us downstairs and seated in 5 minutes at a great table with a very attentive server!"

  • "Food was excellent and service was friendly and timely. My group of four only had kind things to say about their dishes and restaurant experience. City Cafe is a gem, a must do for foodies. Highly recommended for breakfast and lunch. Looking forward to returning for dinner. Worth the drive from DC/Maryland."

  • "We've been coming to City Cafe on nights when we have BSO tickets at the Meyerhoff for about ten years now. As great as the food is, and the ambiance, the best thing about City Cafe is the service. The entire team has mastered the science of feeding a lot of people good food very quickly, and yet as a customer you never feel rushed. They do an excellent job. Can't wait to try breakfast or brunch there. Hear great things about it."

  • "Friendly staff fresh tasty food. The tables are small and stacked next to each other . Ask for a four top if you require more room. The club sandwich is enough to share it's the best in town. Lovely mashed potatoes a well stocked bar. Stop by for brunch served everyday til 3 PM. It's wonderful. enjoy :)"

  • "This was one of dozens of times I have been to the CITY CAFE. It was very busy and we had a new server who was OK. She never gave us her name and we had to ask for water refills. BUT, the FOOD IS ALWAYS THE BEST!!!!!"

  • "The food was very good. The server was outstanding. However, we did have a problem. We arrived at City Cafe about 5:50 pm. Our Reservations were for 6:00 pm & were made for 3. When the 3rd person arrived at 6 pm he was told that there were no reservations listed under Maranto. They had seated us upstairs & our friend down stairs. We finally ordered & after finishing our meal proceeded down the stairs to leave the restuarant & saw our friend eating at a table near the stairs. We have never had this problem at any other establishment & can only hope that City Cafe will work out this glich in their system. We told them what happened & they said sorry!"

  • "City Cafe has an upscale casual elegance and an interesting menu, both in regard to the appetizers, entrees and wine list. I had a deliciously unique dish if butternut squash quinoa risotto with tempura fried Brussels sprouts. Amazing. Staff was friendly and attentive. Highly recommend."

  • "Ate here before attending "Man of La Mancha" at Lyric. Everything was delicious, good variety of choices, and good service. Particularly liked the sautéed spinach and the chocolate cake dessert."

  • "Our server gave us a "tour" of the restaurant and was fascinated by each room's "theme". We loved the eclectic nature of the restaurant, especially the upside down old washing machine used as a planter. Our server was very knowledgeable of the food and if she couldn't answer a question, she found it out quickly. There were many eyes on our table to ensure plates were cleared, water glasses filled, etc. If we lived across the street, we would definitely be regulars here. We had 4 in our group and ordered many different things. The Kale Salad with Octopus was fabulous! We each ordered a different entree and "passed our plate" to the right and took a bite of each entree. From duck, to skirt steak, to pork chop to fried chicken - it was fab."

  • "I was worried after my first experience where we sat for 30 minutes before a waiter approached us and just left. This second round was far better. Went for brunch and both the food and service were great. The blackened shrimp and grits were amazing. Pricing wasn't bad either. Hopefully my third time will prove my first experience was a fluke."

  • "We had an enjoyable Saturday brunch. Our server Sarah was fantastic and the highlight of the meal. It was our first visit and she was informative, upbeat, and a real pleasure. Everyone enjoyed their food. The tastes were amazing. I would recommend to try sticking to the breakfast portion of the menu instead of the lunch stuff. Awesome place and I can't wait to go back!"

  • "We were looking for a place to eat before the theater. The selection around the Hippodrome is limited. They have a broad selection to keep everyone happy. The prices also can vary so you can determine what you feel comfortable in spending and still get good gourmet food. I would definitely go there again."

  • "Great wine and beer selection, excellent service, lively. I had a simple dish, grilled Mediterranean salad. Great salad ingredients but my meal was just so-so. Everything else including the appetizer and my fiancé's meal was great so I'll guess that was a fluke. I'd go back, overall it was a great experience."

  • "Service was excellent, even provided a gluten sensitive menu for one of our party, and replaced a salad that someone didn't like. The location can't be beat if you're attending something at the Meyerhoff or Lyric. Ambience was pleasant, lively but not too noisy. But considering the prices, the food was only okay."

  • "I have been to this restaurant many times, but this time the service was great but the food fair. We ordered calamari first and that was just fair. The food came right after we got the calamari. We sent it back and they brought the main course after we told them. there was only one fish choice the other fish had dates, and raisins which sounded terrible. We cannot praise any one thing. I think they need to change the menu to make it more updated and more appealing. We had theater tickets so this was very convenient. The wine choices could be better, too"

  • "We go to the City about once a month for dinner before the theater usually around 6PM. We were surprised at the number of people that were already there. We are almost always among the first guests of the evening. We took that as a good sign! The oysters were perfect!! Our meals were perfectly delicious and very reasonably priced.. This place is a real find."

  • "Unfortunately when we arrived at City Café they did not have our Open Table reservation. I'm glad we arrived fairly early so they could accommodate our group of 5 guests. I'm a little hesitant to use Open Table in the future if the reservation never makes it to the restaurant. I showed the hostess my confirmation on my phone and she told me they've had lots of problems with Open Table. Thought you might want to know."
