Diner Reviews
  • "We were in St. Helena and looking for good dinner options for that night. We asked locals and this was one of the recommendations. "

  • "We had a great dinner after a night at the Cameo! Good food and movies make for a fun night!"

  • "The food was great and the price was god value for money -a cosy place where folks from napa come to dine and we are glad that we chose this restaurent"

  • "Not so impress with the food this time around - the Asian rice noodle was undercooked on the Sole Salad, My husband complained of not so fresh tasting fish on his fish and chips. We loved the pudding dessert. Might have to think twice before coming back here."

  • "The food was great, loved the "not chicken" menu, service excellent, quaint decor. What can I say - will go back."

  • "Enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Cindy's. Our server was great guiding us through the menu. The bingo oysters were amazing! I have never been a fan of cooked oysters but this dish made me a believer. The spring risotto was on point. It included asparagus tips, baby pears and other baby spring veggies. I went with the suggestion to top I with prosciutto - fabulous. My husband had a lamb dish that he loved so much I didn't even get a taste! The wine list was pricey but we found a nice pino noir that fit our budget for under $75. Dessert was a bit as well with homemade bandanna ice cream with bourbon chocolate sauce. An excellent meal. Thank you Cindy!"

  • "Good menu choices. Had the duck burger which was ground up duck meat. I prefer crispy duck so this was a little disappointing. We had a good appetizer and mushrrom tamales which were excellent. Drinks and beer choice was great. We were seated upstairs whish felt a little too quiet away from the main dining room and bar. The waiter was very friendly and attentive and gave us some good tips about other places to see in San Fran."

  • "We come here each time we are in the area. Interesting food though I always order the same thing, rabbit tostada! Husband loved his food too, and the wine list is nicely varied. A good bet."

  • "Food, service, ambiance were all excellent. Unfortunately we were seated next to a loudmouth who is some kind of hotshot in wine country. He was totally unaware the anyone else was in the restaurant. I suppose he's too "important" for the staff to confront him!! We should have ask for another table. Otherwise, a great meal."

  • "The meal was not nearly as good as the lunch we had there last summer. Had a 7:00 reservation. Disappointment started when I ordered a bottle of wine off the menu and they were out of it. Why have it on a desk top published menu if you are out? So ordered wine by the glass. We had the flatbread with mushrooms appetizer which was OK but my wife didn't like it. I had a chicken dish which underwhelmed, given Cindy Pawlcyn's reputation for imaginative food. Just OK. We thought we'd make up for it with the strawberry/rhubarb shortcake which the server raved about when we discussed the specials at the beginning. Only to find that, at 8:30, they were out of it. Why be out of anything at 8:30? This doesn't seem like a hard dish to make."

  • "We had Dwight as our server and hope we get him for every future reservation. He is always great. We had a different waiter before and he was really a downer. Great food as always."

  • "Cindy's is an excellent place to stop in and have a delicious yet unique lunch. The menu has some interesting takes on common foods. We ate the Quail burger and the Rabbit tostada. Both we perfectly cooked and had a blend of flavors you would often experience. I would definitely return and maybe save some room for dessert."

  • "I have been to Cindy's many times, and have always had an amazing meal. My friend came for the first time and thought it was outstanding. We sat in the patio, my preferred location and shared all dishes, which the waiter happily coursed out with new plates and flatware for each course. I always order the mushroom tamales because they are unique and incredibly delicious. Everything else was equally memorable, and the service was attentive and approachable. I can't wait for my next visit!"

  • "Everyone in our group enjoyed the food and the atmosphere immensely. Oysters Bingo were to die for. Service was excellent, prices reasonable and decor charming."

  • "I was by myself, so I decided not to take up a whole table. It was nice. I had a nice dinner, with excellent food. The bartender could have been a bit more attentive, but this would not change my mind about it being an excellent place to go. Food was tasty, well priced and not too big. I loved the menu. Many interesting items to choose from."

  • "Had a very good meal. Food is simple and straightforward, and very tasty. A bit on the expensive side for what it is, but everything we ordered was good. Flatbread and pozole as starters, goat stew and grilled quail as mains, and sticky toffee date pudding for dessert. Liked every single dish"

  • "Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen is a charming and unpretentious gem of a restaurant. The food is inspiring and inventive and always delicious. There are local grown specialties featured each month. The service is outstanding from a warm welcome at the door to a knowledgeable wait staff. The locally raised, braised goat special served over a bed of polenta was outstanding...best polenta I have ever enjoyed. Reasonably priced...shouldn't be missed when in St. Helena."

  • "Visited Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen for the first time and enjoyed a marvelous lunch. My wife and I both had the Duck Burgers and they were absolutely yummy!! Very friendly and attentive service with less pretentiousness than many restaurants in the Napa valley!"

  • "We came for the best french fries, and while still good, not as out of the world as they were last time. We all got hamburgers even though they have a great menu and wonderful specialty grilled cheese sandwiches. Good combo of cocktails and beer as well."

  • "Ate there several times for lunch. Had good salads, hamburger, etc. Some desserts disappointing. Some food very very good, others sometimes disappointing. Varies. Serivce is excellent and ambiance very pleasant."

  • "I have eaten at Cindy's Back Street Kitchen many times. When I visit Calistoga to relax I make it a point to stop at Cindy's. It never disappoints...service is friendly and extremely accommodating to special occasions. Quality eats, wonderful ambience and a professional wait staff that will bend over backwards to make their customers satisfied. Cindy's Back Street Kitchen gets my highest recommendation."

  • "We checked the internet for best restaurants in St Helena and Cindy's Backyard Kitchen was not in one of the Top Ten lists we found. However, a member of our party had read about the restaurant and really wanted to go there. The word Kitchen made me think that it might be I very casual in the diner vein. Surprise! The decor was classy and the food selection VERY sophisticated. More importantly, the food was simply delicious. My husband's lamb was very tender and flavorful. My pasta was as good as I ever had. Our friend had the crab and loved it. We shared the Pork taco appetizer and the huckleberry ice cream with lemon cookie. The price was very reasonable and the service spot on. We had a late lunch so restaurant was not too busy."

  • "Had a late reservation and was impressed with the food and service. Especially enjoyed the waiter's knowledge of the menu and his clear enjoyment of working at this fine establishment."

  • "The way home-cooking, comfort food should be, deeply satisfying. Loved the flavors, probably ate too much, but just couldn't leave anything, it was all so, so yummy."

  • "We were happy to come back to cindy's Backstreet Kitchen with our parents after having a great experience for lunch. We tried dinner and after waiting a long time to order and get our food, two out of the four of us were served cold food, and cold soup for appetizer. The waiter immediately made good on the soup and apologized for the dinners. They did send out two desserts on the house, which was nice. We were slightly disappointed since our lunch was a great experience. Too many other choices in Napa, so I think next time we will try elsewhere. We loved all of Cindy's restaurants in Napa, sorry to see her winebar was closed!"

  • "Nice place, great decor, good service, above average food. Expensive for sure, maybe excessively. A good meal and fine dining experience, just might not be worth the prices.."

  • "I loved the rabbit dish here. It was so tasty and tender. My daughter loved the pasta butter and cheese. My husband loved the duck burger, he said it was the best burger:)."

  • "Spent the weekend with friends in Napa and Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen was highly recommended. We shared the Achiote Pork Tacos for appetizer, it had a good flavor but messy to eat. I ordered the adult grilled cheese. Very cheesy, floral like aioli spread on toasted bread. It was a bit too greasy for me along with the polenta fries which was deep fried. The meal was too greasy overall I couldn't finish it. I washed it down with a cup of hot oolong tea after the meal. Instead of the polenta fries, I wish I ordered the french fries instead. The upside-down pineapple desert was delicious! My friends ordered the Backstreet Burger and the ravioli special, no complaints. Maybe next time I will have a better experience."

  • "The last time I came, it was wonderful, service was great, food excellent just had a great time This last time, the service was so bad I may never come back The server was so Inattentive towards us, gave us a menu, took our order, and totally ignored us. He was so attentive to everyone else around us making us feel very uncomfortable. It was so obvious we were being ignored. He didn't even bring our dinner to us, but brought everyone around us their dinner. Asked everyone else how everything was, their food, if they wanted another drink, water or dessert We got nothing We would have liked dessert, but since we were being ignored decided to leave. It wasn't until we just got up to leave that he brought the dessert menu to us."

  • "Very good choice for lunch or dinner with guests or just a personal treat. Food and service are consistently good and noise doesn't interfere with conversation."

  • "We were a party of 6 (3-couples) and the menu had so many options we all wanted to try so we ordered a bunch of first courses to share and ordered our own main course. Everything was delicious. After a long day of travel and then a couple winery visits, the casual atmosphere and excellent food was perfect and our server was great."

  • "We have enjoyed Cindy's Backstreet in the past, but this time I ventured into a duck dish and was disappointed. I did not enjoy it and did not like the taste. Someone else at the table liked the duck cassoulet, so it may be that it was just the wrong dish for me. We will go back again."

  • "My wife and I got there and were taken to our table. The meal was fabulous, Having Mains in starter sizes made it so she could enjoy the housemade ravioli and then have the skirt steak. I had,,,marrow and porcini encrusted Filet, OMG. The wine that our server picked was perfect with the meal. And it was one we had not tried. Thank you for that. Service was good, not great. There was one down side yo our experience. The mains were brought out a little too abruptly. There was no reason to bring them that soon."

  • "Food was way over spiced. I had the Quail and was unable to taste the fresh earthy meat. Brought the wrong dish to one of our guest. Which were Duck legs and thighs that were just adequate"

  • "Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen features great tasting but smaller plate food versus the price point. The venue is a mix of modern and relaxed yet eclectic and country all mixed together. The bar is small but comfortable. The ambiance is quieter and less frenetic than other Napa Valley venues. A good option for weekend brunch."

  • "Pleasing and comfortable dining area. Professional and experienced server. Awesome wine list with some great ones available by the glass, think Shramsberg sparkling. Eclectic menu that had plenty to please the hard to please. The rabbit toastada was perfect. I will drive back 90 miles for that dish. The best grilled cheese sandwich my 80yr old foodie Mom has ever had. Tamales you will find nowhere else, and even a great hamburger for the forever grumpy 81 year old Dad who hates eating out. I do not have a sweet tooth so I rarely indulge, but the campfire pie ( think S'mores for grown- ups)was awesome. The other great dessert was the pineapple upside down cake. I did not try it but the serving was quite generous and quickly devoured. !!!"

  • "The curried chicken salad is always one of our favorites. In the dessert section, the warm pineapple upside down cake is excellent, and the Campfire Pie is good. I do not recommend the Backstreet Burger. Mine and everyone else's burger is dry and overcooked, no matter what your preference is from medium rare to medium well. The Oysters Bingo are prepared with too much garlic, and I happened to like garlic. So many items on the menu are very good, but there are items that you should avoid."
