  • "Visited on a sunny evening - very busy yet we were seated immediately at the oyster bar - great music and lively staff! Recommend catfish - nice to enjoy an entree that is extremely tasty - and filling!"

  • "no espresso machine, bad coffee, music too loud, waiter cheecky, limp 2 pieces of salad on plate, crab cake was small but good, eggs good, potatoes good"

  • "Others have commented on the noise level at Chewie's but this does not appear to have been noticed. Although food and prices were good, and service competent if not too interested in a table of 3 middle aged patrons, the noise level was so loud that conversation almost impossible. Management would do well to note this oft repeated comment and consider toning down the volume a bit."

  • "Our appies came out fast but entrees took forever to come out. Fried chicken was good but mashed potatoes came out stone cold, hard and lumpy like it had been sitting out for hours, green beans were cold as well. They replaced potatoes and beans which came out much better and our server took the entree off our bill which was nice. Overall, food and service was average not what we expected for something that was featured on TV. We left a little disappointed."

  • "Vegetables and potatoes were ice cold after a bit of a delay for the food - oysters and meat were the usual high quality- the waiter was stunned when I asked him not to full pour for some of our party - my second glass of wine was poured on a rocky table so it naturally spilled all over before I even saw it - lucky we had some spare napkins in purse or I would have been wearing it... I come to Chewies because the food is do good - don't understand the need for the over pouring nor for the loudness and in your face waiting style.. The food speaks for itself - the rest is juvenile overkill"

  • "great patio on a good day but after the server cleared our dinner he brought us our bill without asking us if we wanted anything else and we had planned to order dessert ... but generally the staff was friendly food was indifferent ... my grits were lumpy and weird (i ordered shrimp and grits) and on my friend's oyster po' boy the tomato slices were green and raw and inedible ..."

  • "Too many flies when we were seated in the back of the restaurant. Not enough air circulation. Staff were great and attentive though. Oysters were great."

  • "We had a really great time and the food was really good too! I had the biscuits with eggs and my husband had waffles with fried chicken. Both great dishes!"

  • "Group of 4 went there for happy hour. Website mentions 2 deals at this branch- a buck a shuck and half off the first bite items. The waiter said promotion for half off first bites items was not on. They should have updated the website so customers wont be disappointed. Good thing is that the fanny bay oysters were sweet, only very few pieces of shell pieces found in the oysters. Will still go back if i happen to be in the area"

  • "This was our 10th visit to this restaurant and we had a very negative experience at Chewies Kitsilano. We waited a very long time for a table even though many were empty. Which seemed personal because the restaurant wasn't busy. Finally was able to order drinks & shucked oysters, arrived with bits of shell. They needed a better rinse before serving... Asked for a glass of ice and received an eye roll. The staff here used to be friendly and attentive with a nice relaxing atmosphere. NOT ANYMORE! Not sure where the attitude and temperamental service came from. Will not be returning or recommending this restaurant."

  • "This is a very happening place, at least on a Saturday night. The place was busy and the staff were engaged and seemed like they were having fun. The food was great, really like the Gator. I will be back to check it out again!"

  • "Upon arriving to the restaurant, the hostess did not have a friendly attitude. This somewhat ruined the experience for me already. Thankfully they have awesome food and great servers!"

  • "We came for a birthday dinner with a 2-year old. Unfortunately there are no high chairs or booster seats, but they put us in a booth with a bench. Then, the staff found a large tablecloth that was folded up and in a bag which they brought for our little girl to sit on. Perfect! The service was excellent - the server was there when needed but not overbearing. Food was delicious, plentiful and very reasonably priced. We'll be back!"

  • "I took my girlfriend here for a birthday dinner and we both really enjoyed it. The service was fast and friendly, the food was very good and the prices were reasonable. It is a relaxed atmosphere, but does not sacrifice quality. "

  • "I went here with my granddaughter who recently started working at UBC. As a San Francisco foodie, I was anxious to try a very well recommended restaurant (by 2 different locals). We were not disappointed. The service was very friendly and efficient; the food was awesome! I rarely eat meat, but decided to try the brisket which the waiter heartily approved of and which I had never before eaten. It was so tender and flavorful; you didn't need a knife to cut it. There was so much of it, I gave half to my granddaughter who was happy to take it home. The only negative was the noise level, but I guess if you're among the younger generation it wouldn't be a problem."

  • "I went to Chewies for the first time this week and had such a great experience!! Amazing food (the fried chicken is just as delicious as I've heard about), attentive and friendly staff, and a nice, chilled atmosphere on a sunny, spring evening. There wasn't enough room on the patio, but sitting inside across from the open kitchen was pretty cool. Every dish we had was great, and though we were stuffed we had the beignets and red velvet cake for dessert and managed to devour those as well!! I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in town :)"

  • "Went for dinner and it was SSooooo fabulous that we went again for brunch a few weeks later. Service was slow, 2 out of 3 dishes were not up to par at all, the one that was good... chicken & waffles! Not to have--Biscuits and gravy with sausage or bacon - gravy was like dishwater and biscuits were doughy....Crab benny - So dry and crab was VERY "off""

  • "We had a bunch of problems with menu items but the manager made it up to us, so I don't want to criticize here. I do want to mention that despite my advance reservation and the many empty tables at the time of our arrival, we were placed at the very far back last possible table. But, I simply asked for a table up front and we were accommodated. "

  • "The minute we walked in for brunch, the hostess was missing from the front. We waited a few minutes and she finally greeted us. They were 30 minutes behind on reservations, which wasn't the restaurant's fault. But she disposed of us at the bar then forgot about us. She gave our table to another party until we made a fuss about it. She huffily seated us. Our server was mediocre. He was nice but nothing outstanding. The food, however, redeemed the whole experience. The chicken and waffles are a must try as well as the crab cake benny. If you're looking for good service, don't come here. But if you're looking for a tasty eat regardless of the service, this is the place for you."

  • "We arrived at Chewie's on a Saturday at 7 pm. We were greeted by the hostess immediately and shown our table. The waiter came to get our drink order about 10 minutes later and was very relaxed and familiar with us. About 20 minutes after supplying our drinks he took our food order, gator and hush puppies to start, BBQ shrimp and grits, and an oyster po'boy. I have had gator before and this gator was not great, it was so tough you couldn't cut the large pieces to fit your mouth but, the hush puppies were the some of the best I've had. The BBQ shrimp were generous and well seasoned however the grits were a gooey lump at the side of the pan. The highlight of the po'boy was the fries, the bun was stale, the toppings almost non-existent. "

  • "Went out to celebrate my birthday. Been once before and enjoyed myself. This time not so much. Ordered 6 Oysters to share with husband ate a few then saw a live worm wiggling around the ice that the Oysters were on. They took it away and offered new ones. Ordred dinner- husband enjoyed the jambalaya, not good gluten free options. "

  • "Great noisy fun atmosphere, knowledgeable staff, great buck a shuck oysters and product knowledge. Kitchen was slow but I wasn't in a rush. Shrimp and grits were good. Chewie's caeser hottest drink I've ever had after twenty years in the bar industry. But good and staff warned about heat tolerance. I will go back with a bunch of friends for brunch or oysters !"

  • "Food taste great and come quickly. We ordered 3 dozens of raw oysters. On the last dozen, we suddenly realized we were only given 10 oysters and some empty shells instead of 12 oysters. We felt cheated and wish we were mindful of other 2 dozens. We made reservation early and were given a small table (only suitable for 2 people) for a party of 3 due to limited seating. Not impressed with this dining experience."

  • "I love this place! Every time I've gone to Chewies, I've had an amazing time. The food is great, the atmosphere is fun, and the servers make the experience that much more fun. Start your meal off with Oysters and two things you must try are the Southern Fried Chicken and the Jambalaya."

  • "From the moment we were seated we were treated like regulars. Almost every server, busser, and host came by the table to chat, check-in and make sure everything was good. Everyone is very friendly and low key! The fried chicken and the ribs were amazing. Chewie even said hello and introduced himself - just great overall experience for a night out in a casual atmosphere!"

  • "What a treasure! We loved everything--the fresh oysters (to die for), pan-fried squid, prawns and green tomatoes. Well, frankly, I found the beignets a bit heavy but then I haven't been to New Orleans for decades and shouldn't trust my memory. However, the noise is excruciating even though we had a relatively "quiet" table. Also, the service was so good that we were in and out in 30 min! Not sure I like that. On the other hand, we contributed to that by scarfing everything down--it was so good."

  • "Everything we had were tasty but the so-called "crackling" wasn't crackling per se - there was no skin at all!! It's fairly loud but overall a good casual dining spot."

  • "I went to the Kits location for a birthday brunch on a Sunday. Arrived at 10:30 (having made a reservation). We managed to get one of the remaining a two-person booths. By 11 to 11:30 it was pretty busy, even the bar counter spots being taken up. So, I'd recommend making a reservation if you want to be assured of a space as the Kits location is not that large. Great chicken & waffles and braised rib hash. I plan on returning and trying the oysters (or my wife will) and some other items on the menu. Service was great - no need to ask for refills of water or coffee cups. The servers didn't fawn over you but that's good in my books."

  • "Everything that we ate was really good and very tasty. I had the jambalaya and it was nice and spicy and very flavourful. The restaurant is very vibrant (loud) on a Friday night so do go expecting a quiet place for intimate conversation. Our server was really attentive and we hardly had to wait long for anything. Had the beignets for desert and they were really fresh and perfect for sharing between two people. Leave plenty of extra time to find parking as there's not a lot of available spots so be prepared to walk several blocks."

  • "Fantastic service and great food. Beet salad, excellent! The steelhead and fried chicken delicious! Raw and pan fried oysters were great. The yummy dessert, a French donut with this amazing coffee vanilla sauce is a must!"
