Diner Reviews
  • "A special night. Our first (certainly not our last) trip to the Charleston for dinner. The experience starts with a wonderful setting down by the water in Harbor East and the overall ambience inside, just the right amount of high end refinement and elegance. Our night started off with a wonderful complimentary asparagus soup that set the tone for what was to come. The spinach salad is an absolute must have along with the sweat breads. I had the duck and my wife had the filet, both very juicy and succulent. Compliments to the Pastry Chef for desert. The brown sugar pie with bourbon ice cream was simply delicious and my wife marveled at the macaroon's."

  • "I had been waiting all week to dine at the Charleston and it absolutely surpassed my expectations. The beef tenderloin, crab cake and amuse-bouch macaroons were stand outs for me this evening. They were very accommodating to our birthday celebration and did a great job as hosts to our children. It is very difficulty to find fault with the interior, service and product."

  • "As always top notch, no Baltimore restaurant can compare. Fabulous dinner and always memorable."

  • "Perfection is the term that covers it all. Service, Atmosphere, and especially the Food. All were impeccable."

  • "We greatly enjoyed our experience. The service was attentive, friendly and professional. The tables were nicely spaced, so that we didn't have to rub elbows with other diners or overhear their conversations. We had the four-course meal with wine pairings. The only wrong note was on my first course, which was a lobster curry soup paired with a dry sherry. The sherry just didn't work for the soup. But otherwise, everything was quite good. There were no amazing dishes, but all-in-all, it was a great dining experience."

  • "From the convenient and polite valet service to, well, the valet service, everything was perfect. Chef Cindy Wolf has created a heavenly dining experience right on Inner Harbor with her blend of French and American low country cuisines. Heaven does come with a price tag, but I can honestly say that the experience was worth every penny. Service was impeccable; polite, respectful and helpful. The food with the recommended wind pairings was exquisite. Every dish was well designed, beautifully presented and delicious. (My wife, however, informed our server that she didn't think that the individual ingredients in one of her dishes "worked well together." We were comped not only for the dish, but the wine pairing for the dish!)"

  • "My wife and I were working in the area and looking for a unique place to meet up with an old friend and his wife. Charleston was perfect! Excellent food, great location, and memorable service. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening and highly recommend it for a special occasion when you're willing to accept the expense."

  • "Every single thing my husband and I tasted was truly fantastic! We had an horderve, 8 different menu items, 2 cheeses, 2 desserts and the coffee came with 4 tiny amazing bite desserts. I cannot say enough great things about this place! The food was amazing, the staff was tremendous, and the ambiance was delightful. No children screaming, no one talking loudly in their phone next to you, just adults having quiet delicious food served by the friendliest most professional wait staff I've ever encountered. I could literally rave about this place all day, but I won't. Everyone should just try it for themselves. A bit pricey but well worth every penny!"

  • "Superlative food. A true wait staff-I had forgotten what it is to be served. If I am back in Bmore I would visit the bar."

  • "Everything is well-prepared from presentation, to the wine-pairing, to the addition of dessert. All 4 courses were outstanding and the service was trememdous. We didn't feel rushed through any course and our waiter made helpful suggestions."

  • "This was one of the best dining experiences I have had in my 59 years of living in Baltimore. From the complimentary valet parking through the greetings at the door, to the outstanding table service, superb food, and wonderful wait staff, we could not have asked for a more perfect evening."

  • "We had heard good things, so we decided to try it for our anniversary, and despite being the most expensive meal we have probably ever had, it was well worth it. From beginning to end the food and service experience was spot on, and well deserving of 5 start. Definitely not a spur of the moment restaurant, but if you have something to celebrate, they do it right here."

  • "On a visit to Baltimore, we selected this restaurant for a mid-week dinner. We sat in the bar area to have a view of the water. It was truly a great experience. Our waiter, and the rest of the staff, were incredibly professional and knowledgeable. I 100% recommend this restaurant for the wonderful, world class food. We were able to explore some dishes that we would not have necessarily ordered an entire course of in at another restaurant because it was a tasting format. Highlights for us were the chicken/risotto dish, the shrimp and grits, and the sweetbreads."

  • "I started with an arugula salad which was light and perfectly dresssed. I followed with halibut and filet-both melted in my mouth. Finished with a goat cheese mousse- also great."

  • "The food at Charleston was amazing. Every course was delicious. Ambiance was perfect and service was terrific. Price was very expensive but well worth it for a special occasion."

  • "This was our third or fourth time at Charleston to celebrate a special occasion (our wedding anniversary in this case), and as in the past visits, we enjoyed every moment. Charleston is known for an outstanding wine list but I enjoyed a festive gin flip cocktail. One of their signature dishes, the fried oysters, were sweet and tender with just the right amount of coating. I have never had a disappointing soup at any Foreman-Wolf restaurant and the corn chowder, delicate yet flavorful, was no exception. The spinach salad and the scallops with sautéed cauliflower and walnuts were also terrific. I finished with the opera cake, and had to take my share of the macarons and chocolates home because I couldn't eat another bite!"

  • "Although touted as an excellent restaurant, one of the best, our experience belied that. The menu is, well, strange: picking 3 to 6 tiny food items, (with 3 being least expensive), and then telling the waitperson what order you want them. A lot of work in what should be a easy dining experience. When each is brought to the table, the waitperson recites in rather great detail what's in the dish. A bit redundant, since the descriptions are printed on the menu. This kind of sequential meal takes quite a long time. We were there three hours. For this belabored meal, the bill for four with tip was $500. Sorry, but Charleston just didn't live up to its reputation, at least not for us."

  • "Amazing food, service, drinks, menu, environment, etc. Really don't have a single bad thing to say. Do the wine pairing with your meal! Our tab for two people exceeded $400 after tip, so just be prepared."

  • "We spent 2 years living in Baltimore and saved dinner at the Charleston for a celebratory night before our departure. And everything about it lived up to the two years of anticipation. It was a perfect evening - from the food to the service we could not have been more pleased. This was one of our top 3 best dining experiences we've ever had."

  • "One of the five best meals I have ever had any where in the world. Wonderful food, terrific service, and a pleasant atmosphere for dining. Our wait team consisted of four persons, each of whom was extremely attentive. My wife and I had the wine paired four course meal...simply extraordinary!"

  • "Best restaurant in Baltimore and tops in the region, no question. Highly acclaimed, consistent James Beard contender. Costly, but worth it for a special occasion. Quality food, ingredients. Fantastic wine list, amazing attention to detail. Great service."

  • "Really enjoyable dining experience although very expensive so great for special special occasions. Lobster soup was the most delicious I have ever had and soft shell crab was light and fresh and perfectly seasoned. All the food flavors are intensely vibrant which makes for outstanding memories. Suggest that bar service would be improved with an offering of something to nibble on when the drinks are served and not 15 minutes later. The bread service was really disappointing. Please remove the awful, dry almost tasteless cornbread, and wafer thin slices of baguette. These should not be served at a restaurant of this caliber! Definitely would return for another really fabulous celebration."

  • "Charleston is always excellent. Wouldn't miss dinner here if I'm in Baltimore. My biggest problem is what to choose, since I love so many menu items. A nice problem to have!! Never had anything disappointing, everything is top notch."

  • "The menu is creative and the wine list extensive and expensive. Everything we had in our group was delicious. Chef Cindi Wolf is creating real gems in her kitchen."

  • "Multiple small innovative dishes with paired wines, elegantly served by a knowledgeable and well conditioned staff, in a lovely and hospitable environment, personally overseen by a Queen of the art, with a gargantuan price tag. Very special occasions may justify."

  • "I would give Charleston 10 stars if possible!!! Came here to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday and I must say this place was just wonderful. The food was beyond delicious, the ambiance perfect for a romantic dinner, and our waiter, Brian, completed the whole package. We had 2 wonderful surprises from the Chef, which were fantastic. I wish I could relieve the whole experience all other again. Definitely worth the price and if you have the $$ to spend then I definitely recommend going even if it isn't for a special occasion."

  • "Cindy Wolfe works with simple fresh locally procured ingredients and with extraordinary good taste and imagination makes dishes with flair and flavor. Don't miss the potato chips in the bar, the soups and other beginning dishes. The menu changes with the season and the wine pairings add an additional dimension. The staff is professional and welcoming. This would be a two star restaurant in France."

  • "This place is a little over the top. I took some VIPs visiting to Baltimore and wanted to show them Baltimore's finest. I was disappointed. The beer selection was overly IPA and labels I had never seen, The wine list is extensive but too many $500+ wines and not enough lower dollar. The service was attentive but confused. The food was very good but the experience left me a little dismayed and disapointed. Think I am done with Charlestons."
