  • "We went here for a surprise dinner for my friend's birthday and everyone at the restaurant was so helpful from the host to the waitress. They helped us get the tables set so she couldn't see us waiting for her when she walked in and then instead of a piece of cake or desert for her birthday since we brought cupcakes, they gave her a complimentary birthday glass of champagne and some for the rest of the table too. The food was amazing!"

  • "I've been to Cedar quite a few times for dinner and happy hour (which are both great), but this was the first time I've been for breakfast. It was so yummy! The service was quick and top-notch. I had the smoked salmon benedict which was out of this world. It's a pretty affordable brunch menu, and to top it off, they've got amazing brunch cocktails. I can't say anything bad about my experience."

  • "My husband had the Smoked Salmon Benedict and I the Chicken and Waffles and they were both great. I was excited that they use French press for the coffee but they do not put nearly enough coffee grinds in. Both the mild and strong versions tasted very watered down."

  • "Been here a few times for happy hour and finally came for dinner. Liked the range of entrees which include game meat like venison and boar. Both were cooked very well with good sides and a lot of flavor. Loved the amuse bouche - a nice touch! Appetizers were okay. Everything was well presented. Had higher expectations for dessert. Quiet, dark, romantic ambience but unfortunately in a basement! Good service and decent wine list."

  • "I took a friend here for a retirement lunch and it was great. For a Friday it was not crowded at all due possibly to the Washington's baseball game. Anyway I ordered the wild game sausage trio of bison/buffalo, rabbit and venison/deer and it was great! My only complanint is that the portion size. My colleague ordered the leg of lamb and her quote was, "it was phenomenal" and she would visit again. It was also great to talk with the chef. He greeted us on our way and we discussed the wild game sausage dishes. Great job chef!"

  • "Very friendly reception, interesting decor down flight of stairs from the street, a bit noisier than we had hoped for a romantic dinner because of the young crowd enjoying happy hour. Excellent soups with original flavors: white chocolate and lobster bisque was delicious. My husband ordered the pheasant dish which was on special and was a generous portion and very flavorful. I had the diver's scallops, appetizer portion to leave room for desert. Desert was amazing: chocolate and peanut butter cake, with house-made ice cream. Our only criticisms: drinks took too long to arrive and our otherwise very attentive waiter did not know what the in-house ice-cream was made of and never got back to us when we asked him."

  • "I gave this review that name because although I've been around that area, I didn't realize there was a great little spot like Cedar right here. At first glance, it seems like just a door with a sign but no traditional "tables in the windows" type of restaurant. Upon entering, you descend the staircase and into a very warm/ intimate spot that has been there for 5 yrs. The menu has great variety with freshness in mind (PLEASE make sure to try the wild game sausages as a tasting platter..Fantastic!!) The drinks were unique and luckily, we got served by one of the bartenders who also gave a great presentation of after brunch scotch we ordered which made the meal. All in all, 2 thumbs up, would definitely go back!!"

  • "Not overly impressed. Black Angus beef came in two versions. One very tender and tasty, the other chewy and tough. The place is in a basement and pretty noisy. Wine was overpriced. An ok meal, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go back."

A really nice touch was the dialing back of the music as the dining room filled and attention became absorbed in the favors."

  • "The basement could make one feel closed in but the sleek and softly lit space manages to feel comforting instead. The food is unusual, offering bison, duck, elk, wild boar, venison and trout as well as a few other items not common on DC menus. It felt like a north woods menu in some sleek modern upscale hunting lodge. The food was well prepared and inventive, both specialties and standards such as steak and fish. I would have liked to have had more vegetable side options which many restaurants offer more and more. The wine list was reasonable. The house cocktails were unusual and very good."

  • "Had a Saturday evening pre-theater dinner here. Our waiter and the staff were very helpful in getting us through in time for the show, without our feeling rushed. Ambiance was pleasant and relaxed. Food was delicious and reasonably priced. We've had dinner here before and the experience has been uniformly good. Highly recommend."

  • "My husband and I came here to celebrate our wedding anniversary.We were not very impressed with our service.It took forever for our server to come to our table with a bread basket.Needless to say,this set the tone for the rest of the evening. :-( The menus are seasonal, with a very small vegan menu in comparison to the regular menu.Also,note that the vegan dishes may not come to the table as described on the menu.Example, the tofu steak with heirloom squash and sundried tomatoes came out with a puree of some sort and rehydrated cranberries. My husband enjoyed his food, he ordered the 5 course option.I ordered the vegan three courses.We both enjoyed our desserts and the bottle of Mourvedre that we were told was a 'vegan' wine option."

  • "Had dinner at Cedar after reading other reviews and had a very enjoyable dining experience. Service was excellent from warm welcome upon arrival to gracious appreciation when we departed. Waiter, food server and bus person were also friendly, knowledge and appropriately attentive. Food was very good. We arrived a few minutes before 7pm so we were offered the 3 Course Pre Theatre Menu. We had winter salad, parsnip soup, mushroom tart and cod -- each dish was prepared well, nice presentation and tasty. I also had wine parings which were good and generous pours."

  • "As always, the food at Cedar was exceptional. However, a party of 20 was very raucous and inconsiderate of the other diners and management made no effort to deal with it. As such, it was a very disappointing dining experience, especially since we had friends from out of town that we told that Cedar was an experience they would remember. They will remember it for the wrong reasons."

  • "I recently had a small informal business meeting here and, not knowing the restaurant, hoped for the best. That's exactly what I got! I'm not a stickler for great service but I understand etiquette and procedure very well and will privately note missteps by waiters. At one point I thought to myself it was a shame we were almost out of bread as we still had a bit of our cheese plate left. Not five seconds later more bread was on the table. When you feel like the waiter might be able to read your mind, you're in a good place! From the courtesy of the staff to the excellence of the food and touches of detail such as offering to put our coats on for us as we left, Cedar rises above the rest for an experience of undeniably fine dinning."

  • "Work close to Cedar and have been there several times for lunch. You need to go there for dinner if you have not been, this place is incredible. The staff, service and food is just incredible. Try the Lobster While Chocolate Soup, WOW! There really is not anything on the menu that is bad. Love this place."

One other note; if you are mobility challenged, phone the restaurant from outside to be directed to the elevator. The only other way in is down a long staircase."

  • "Cedar is one of my all-time favorite restaurants. This past weekend I took friends from out of town there for brunch. I did not tell them much except the food and the staff are very good and friendly. The order, wild meat trio for sampling. They were delighted and enjoyed every bit. Orders, chicken and waffles, cleaned the plate =, asked for whipped cream and strawberries to top it off. Banana nut French toast, the plate was so clean, it could skip the dish washer. Steak and eggs, gone, but this person has been taught to always leave something on the plate. I had my usual , elk sausage and eggs. Great restaurant and I recommend it to everyone that has a guest coming to town and want to try something different."

  • "Actually had lovely and delicious meal. Server arrived at our table, took drink orders and disappeared for a long period of time. Reappeared with 3 of the 5 drinks. Disappeared again for 10 minutes. Reappeared and we told her we wanted pre-theater dinner. She told us we didn't have enough time, at that point a little over an hour. We ordered pre-theater anyway and through some juggling, got our meals within the timeframe. Two of the fish courses were not cooked properly (actually almost raw) but were quickly replaced."

  • "Cedar is a small restaurant in the basement of an ordinary-looking building on E St NW. Decor is pleasant, but food is always excellent, imaginative, served attractively and always very tasty. Don't know how they manage to retain an excellent chef and operate at a profit with only about 30 tables. Service is very attentive and pleasant. Definitely a fine restaurant that is frequently overlooked because of its location. I recommend it highly"

It was very comfortable with warm lighting and very comforting images of cedars on the walls with lots of wood. I really liked the wait staff, the host , and the atmosphere.   • "If you've a nearby event at a theatre or the Verizon Ctr this well-situated American cuisine restaurant is perfect. It's small and intimate. The Manager seated our party of 6 in a private "room" with a curtain separating us from the entrance. There is no one server - everyone seems to lend a hand from placing drink orders to serving the food. Nicely and unobtrusively managed from start to end. Thoroughly delightful evening with cheerful and polite servers."

  • "While there were some nice preparations, I'm disappointed with the value. Two scallops on the appetizer for $16? Four slices of beet on the beet salad for $12? I just find that to be unreasonable. I wasn't coming here for a cheap night out. I didn't have any problem with the actual dollars spent. It's what was received for those dollars that leaves me non-plussed."

  • "I took my wife and family to Cedar for my wife's birthday. I chose it because the reviews were good and it was close to Ford's Theater were we had tickets for a 7:30pm show. We arrived for our 5:45pm reservation on time. I dropped my family off and went to find parking. By the time I got to the table it was about 6:00pm. Our waitress was knowledgable and likable. She took our dinner order, and was advised we had theater tickets. She said no problem. Soups and salads came out about 6:20pm. Delicious! Then this oddly huge wait occurred. We didn't receive our entrees until 7:00pm, and had to eat quickly. No explanation, even though I complained. We barely made the show. Took the pleasure out of the meal. Great food though."

  • "The problem of no valet and a broken garage door with six cars lined up waiting to get was made easier by the restaurant host. He arranged valet parking with the restaurant across the street. We finally got to enjoy our meal, but were very rushed as the kitchen had pacing difficulties that night."
