A word from Castagna
Castagna serves as a clean, calm, modern canvas on which to showcase an artful presentation of food; a series of tastes that elevate the senses and reinterpret local cuisine. Executive Chef Justin Woodward imagines an edible landscape where diners become part of a cycle of abundance: not only tasting, but feeling, smelling, hearing, seeing, and, ultimately, understanding the food.

Chef Woodward offers two tasting menus each night. Diners can choose between a 5 course menu or explore the 10 course Chef’s Tasting Menu. A la cart and vegetarian options are also available.

The 10 course Chef's Tasting Menu for parties of 4 or less is available until 9pm. We offer our 10 course Chef's Tasting Menu for larger parties on request.

Interesting combinations of flavors and textures. we liked: -that they put some of the in season fruit and veg first, not overly relying on proteins as the stars of the plate -a potato skin dessert that was refined and sophisticated -the onion terrarium course (yummmm) could be improved: -the pours for the wine pairings were too small - i've been to Noma, French Laundry, etc - i speak from experience. at $60 for pairings you could give more. Or, charge me more but give me a proper pour - doesn't have to be a full glass -when you substitute a shellfish course for someone with an allergy, a piece of grilled romaine is a slap in the face."

Only con was that initially the courses came out pretty quickly, then there was quite a lull between some of the later courses. They did bring out rolls during that time, but we think it was likely a flatware/ silverware issue. The owner and the chef both introduced themselves to us."

  • "I'm easy to please, so it is rare for me to dislike a restaurant. But Castagna disappointed on several levels. I took two visiting business colleagues, thinking it would be a safe bet. Instead it was a bust. The food was hugely over-priced for the quality. The bread rolls were completely ordinary. My vegetable dish was comprised of one tiny undercooked baby artichoke and two tiny tomatoes. For a city drowning in local produce, it feels ridiculous to pay such sums for things I can eat from my own garden. The room was nothing special. The noise level was moderate—we were able to have a conversation, which was pleasant."

  • "Grilled sturgeon entree was disappointing to say the least. Although my wife's fish was firm, mine was so "mushy" I sent it back. However, the second attempt was no better so I sent it back, too. The Sylvaner riesling paired with the grilled sturgeon was mismatched because Alsatian wines are too fruity for such a delicate fish (when prepared properly). An Oregon Williamette Valley pinot gris would have been better."

  • "This past week two old college friends came to the area to visit. I took a day off. I sent them links to menus to a few places I like, including Castagna, and this was their choice. The food was brilliant as always. They loved the creativity and flavors of the snacks. I have to say the quasi molecular deviled egg was my personal favorite. But the buckwheat cracker with beef tartar was another favorite. We chose the dinner menu. The onion custard dish was spectacular in flavor and texture. Between the 3 of us we ordered everything and shared most of it. My friends loved the food and will remember this meal for a long time. Service was great and leisurely enough to let us continue our day of reuniting after many years. Bravo."

  • "This was an interesting dinner. I am an adventurous eater but I can't say the food was as delicious as it was interesting, experimental. The portion sizes are incredibly small, which I liked, but my husband left hungry. For four people at the prix fix menu, we left with a $600 bill, which would put this in the "very special occasion," if ever occasion, dinner."

  • "Huge disappointment! The food quality was excellent there just wasn't much of it and it took a very long time to get. In a city with many eating choices Castagna would not be a place I would recommend. We took a guest from San Francisco to Castagna and both he and my husband were still hungry afterwards - we ended up at the restaurant next door where they order steak, hamburgers and fries. Our guest commented that he could always find pretentious restaurants in SF and he did expect to find one in Portland."

  • "The dinner was unlike anything I had had before, it was quite delicious. The whole dinner was quite an experience. The snack part was brought out in single decorative sections that you almost didn't want to eat, but once you tried it it was quite tasty. I did the pairing which was good, some wines I didn't care for but others were quite good especially with the food it was served with. The atmosphere was pleasant. When we arrived the place had a few diners. As it filled I noticed the temperature became quite warm, I took of my jacket and was still quite warm, I don't know if it was because we were near the kitchen."

We chose the chefs tasting and wine pairing, so after all was said and done the bill was $440 with tip, but I'd say it was worth it. Don't know if I will go again, but it was a great one time find for sure."

  • "Castagna serves beautifully plated food that is inventive and unique. We ordered the chef's tasting menu, which included around 20 separate small dishes. Servers do an excellent job explaining dishes and are very attentive. While the food is exquisite to look at and expertly prepared, my husband and I found that the chef's palate did not entirely align with our own and some of the flavor combinations presented were not to our liking, including several dishes that we simply could not bear to finish. We typically enjoy unique food and flavor combinations, but some dishes just were not for us. The desserts were truly the shining stars of our meal and were all beyond outstanding. I wish the rest of the meal had been as delicious."

  • "Enjoyed the five course tasting menu, starting with a series of "snacks" before the various courses. Onion terrarium with peas was especially interesting and showcased the chef's preferences for interesting sauces (several were added to the plate by servers as courses presented). Food was delicious and service level and timing of the dishes was excellent. Occasion was a graduation celebration and just what we wanted to please two vegetarians in our party. Highly recommended."

  • "Did not ecpect to find a restaurant like this in Portland. Very creative and delicious tasting menu. Great wine pairings - 12 different wines with decent pours. The dinner service was slow paced, but not dragged out, so you had time to enjoy all of the various wines. Service was very attentive and most all of the courses very tasty - almost one half of the menu was raw - a bit more than our usual taste, but overall outstanding!"

The chef's tasting menu brought four hours of pleasure: multiple plates that had been carefully prepared from high quality ingredients and presented with precision and beauty. Dishes that made us happy: imaginative, and technically at the highest level, but never "clever" for the sake of it. Castagna is a very good restaurant indeed, right up there with some of the best restaurants we've visited in N. America and Europe. In a different location we'd be discussing the appropriate number of Michelin stars. But -- because it is where it is -- it's still easy to get a reservation. Do it! (Note for visitors to Portland: Castagna is easy to reach from the city centre using bus number 14)."
