A word from Castagna
Castagna serves as a clean, calm, modern canvas on which to showcase an artful presentation of food; a series of tastes that elevate the senses and reinterpret local cuisine. Executive Chef Justin Woodward imagines an edible landscape where diners become part of a cycle of abundance: not only tasting, but feeling, smelling, hearing, seeing, and, ultimately, understanding the food.

Chef Woodward offers two tasting menus each night. Diners can choose between a 5 course menu or explore the 10 course Chef’s Tasting Menu. A la cart and vegetarian options are also available.

The 10 course Chef's Tasting Menu for parties of 4 or less is available until 9pm. We offer our 10 course Chef's Tasting Menu for larger parties on request.

Vegetarian Tasting Menus available with 24 hours advanced notice.

Diner Reviews
  • "We had the expanded set course menu and it was as memorable as any meal I have ever had. A once in but a few occasions experience."

  • "The whole dining experience was great. It was the best meal I ever had in Portland. Great job Chef."

  • "Castagna is elegantly casual and relaxed. We chose the Prix Fixe menu with wine pairings. Each wine beautifully complimented the dish and a couple were really happy surprises. How do they do those lovely roasted beet cups that hold the most subtle and flavorful cured beef? A little sprig of nasturtium gave a piquant note to soft and smooth flavors and textures. Presentations are small. And there are enough so we felt nicely satisfied and definitely well cared for. Wait staff was attentive, friendly and unobtrusive. They were obviously aware of our timing. The flow of the dinner was timed to our timing not on the restaurants schedule. We closed the place down and when we left, it felt like we had just left a good friend's house."

  • "The Chef's tasting menu was fantastic. Worth a try."

  • "The sequence of five "snacks" in the fixed-price meal, with the wine pairing was heavenly; by the time we reached the last one we were in another world."

  • "Beautiful dishes, flavors were incredibly on the spot. Everything worked. I wanted more."

  • "Castagna lived up to its reputation. Had been to the Cafe several years ago but the restaurant was very good. the 4 of us all found the food to be inventive, tasty, unusual blend of great ingredients and healthy. The service was noteworthy, we were served by many people but they all worked seamlessly as a team. I consider this one of the best restaurants in Portland and highly recommend it for a special evening."

  • "This was far and away the best meal I have had in a long time, one of the best ever. We did the big chef's tasting menu. It was full of delights, surprises and wonder. Even though there are so many courses (like maybe 20 if you include the opening snacks), the meal was perfectly paced. Yes, you will be there for perhaps four hours, but it sure doesn't feel like it. Excellent wine list as well as cocktails. Do it! Go on a culinary adventure!"

  • "We have been to Castagna approximately six times over the years. And while we found the food very good the prix fixe menu was disappointing (our fault for not checking beforehand). If you are ok with a prix fixe menu then you will not be let down."

  • "Portlands answer to the civilized dining experience. Try the 5 course tasting menu with wine pairings. Portlands' answer to a Napa Valley dining experience. Service was impeccable, wine pairings awesome, food artfully played with full rich flavors. There wasn't an unhappy person at our table. Special occasion or just wanting a quieter dining experience, this is it."

  • "My parents and I did the prix fixe sampling menu, and it was absolutely fantastic. Everything we ate was delicious and interesting, very modern. My personal favorites were the chantarelle mushroom course done multiple ways, and the beet chip with steak tartare inside it. The service was a little slow, but the meal was leisurely and enjoyable. I will say, however, that for a pretty intimate dining room, the sound was not dampened properly and it was a little noisy. I would love to return, though, and will be recommending it to anyone who crosses my path."

  • "Castagna is an unsurpassed Portland culinary experience. It rivals the best restaurants throughout the United States and the world!"

  • "Hadn't eaten here for a while. Will never forget the glorious food, the extreme care that went into everything on the prix fixe menu, the presentation, and the unbeatable staff. One of the best meals we had anywhere, and we eat out a lot in all the major cities in the US and elsewhere."

  • "The food and service was great, but hard to justify a $240.00 meal for two."

  • "I don't usually write reviews unless the experience was over-the-top great. Castagna was. The presentation, variety and flavors were all phenomenal on the tasting menu. The staff was professional, attentive and low key. My wife and I agreed the food experience (not so much the ambience) was reminiscent of a meal we'd had at Bouley in NYC last November. Also, as recent transplants from Seattle, Castagna reminds us that the Seattle vs Portland debate over "best restaurant city" is still alive and well!"

  • "Food was fantastic and I never thought it would be so good and the wine pairings with each dish on the menu make decisions very easy when deciding what to drink."

  • "I chose Castagna to celebrate my 65th with my Indian vegetarian wife and 17 yr old daughter. I had a great time, although I should have let the chef know I was lactose-intolerant. Nevertheless, the food was glorious in both taste and presentation and very amusing. I loved the 1/2 glass of wine option. I enjoyed a different 1/2 glass with each course. My wife opted out of dinner. The "wild rice porridge" offered as a main entre could have been given a more engaging title. It didn't sound special. But my wife thoroughly enjoyed a beautifully-prepared course of vegetarian snacks. My daughter finished everything she was served. Her sturgeon was amazing. My steak was almost equal to my grillmeister Dad's finest. Happy birthday to me. Thanks!"

  • "We arrived about 5 minutes early and we were seated right away, and then ignored for at least 10 minutes. A little annoying. I didn't know the menu was prix fixe and I am vegetarian, so we were preparing ourselves to leave, as every thing included meat. When the first server came around (we had a total of 3 different servers!) told me that the chef could do a veggie version of everything. The food ended up being fantastic and I wish we could afford to eat there more frequently. The advice was a bit spotty, but overall it was so good, and impressive that the chef could recreate his dishes without the meat. A plus was that I got a few extras here and there to make up for the "missing" meat! My husband was jealous!"

  • "Wow! So many great restaurants in Portland and always new and interesting hot-spots to try out, but everyone needs to remember that Castagna constantly provides one of the most consistently creative, detailed and perfectly delicious menus in the city. We did the full tasting menu and wine pairing and it was perfect...every tasting a little piece of edible art, great tastes and textures. Can not wait to return and want to get back before current menu changes....it was that good. Don't wait, don't think twice, just go!"

  • "The only thing that beat the artistic presentation of the food was the taste of it. It was a wonderful experience!"

  • "It was a girls' night out for us. We had a great time. Everybody in the group loved the food and the place. Best in Portland among the ones I have been to. I will definitely come back with my loved one."

  • "My daughter requested a return visit to Castagna for her 25th birthday. This is an outstanding restaurant for a magical tour of the best locally sourced food that Oregon has to offer. The food is presented as art but never to the detriment of taste and texture. I honestly cannot imagine eating a better meal in any city anywhere. The kitchen cares, the dining room staff cares and as a result your dinner will be one to remember. Chef Justin Woodward honors the true flavor of each dish and adds his own touch of whimsical creativity. For ex - Shigoku oyster with fennel jelly and chorizo - served on a bed of rock salt, you lift the top shell and revel in the "stages" of taste as salty, sweet, umami is all encapsulated with one oyster."

  • "Castagna is for the food adventurer - an oyster with fennel jelly and chorizo with sea salt, carrot gelee in a wineglass and onion custard with pea spouts to name just a few of the 12 plus items on the tasting menu in January - and you should enter with your eyes wide open and suspend all judgements. Chef Jason Woodward is an artist and the dishes (and their descriptions given with great care) are as much part of the show as the food. The wine was lovely and the service terrific, but the eclectic parade of small plates were hit-and-miss."

  • "The staff and chef Woodward were gracious hosts to me and my boyfriend (we came all the way from houston to dine here). The pacing was superb and only added that small amount of polish to an already perfect meal. I would recommend this as a dining experience to those who like to forget about the outside world and truly enjoy dinner, if only for a moment. Thank you again to the staff, both in the kitchen and on the floor for reminding me why we allow others to entertain us."

  • "I have been dining at Castagna since it opened in the 90s. Though there have been changes over time, the quality of the restaurant and service remains high. The amuse bouche (aka snacks) are always innovative and the thought that goes into the food and its preparation is always appreciated. The wine pairings are generally good though not that creative (Genoa does that very well). Service is polished but not overdone. The fish dishes especially the sturgeon were the highlight of my last visit."

  • "We all know that Portland is jam packed with great restaurants. But Castagna stands out at the very top - way ahead of all the other amazing places. Everything about the dining experience at Castagna is just about perfect. The service team works so smoothly to insure that you have anything you would like. The food is, of course, what truly makes Castagna what it is. Every dish is fully thought out and beautifully presented. The meal has a careful progression, and it keeps getting better and better with each plate.I cannot think of a better restaurant to celebrate a special occasion at. I already am looking forward to my next meal there. Bravo!"

  • "Absolutely incredible experience! The chef's experience at some of the world's best restaurants was apparent in many aspects of the restaurant (plating, snack/champagne course, etc), but it's refreshing to see innovative and cutting edge techniques put forward in a way that's focused on enhancing the flavors of the food and delighting the dinner, rather than showing off for the sake of it. We had the full chef's tasting menu with pairings, and there was no failure on the menu, and a few absolutely extraordinary world class dishes and wines. Wearrived early and had cocktails, which were delightful & very inventive. Service was casual but proper, ambiance nice but relatively calm. First place in PDX that deserves a Michelin star."

  • "To be truthful I expected more from this restruant in almost all aspects. A couple of the dishes were wonderful but many felt forced. It was our anniverary and I had asked for a seat conducive to the romantic occasion, we sat next to the wall in the corner. The staff service was average at best. I would like to note the wine parings were an excellent compliment to the food."

  • "We dined here on New Year's Eve so the menu was a tasting menu , not the menu I went there to experience. The tasting menu was inventive and flavorful with perfect wine pairings , it was perfect for my taste. My husband would have preferred a little less artful food with less courses. The chef is very talented and I would recommend the restaurant and I would also go back to experience the typical menu. It was a wonderful night however and we enjoyed ourselves."

  • "Our experience at Castagnia made us contemplate that sometimes cuisine can reach the heights of aesthetic pleasure and reveal the creativeness of the chef. Our meal did that for us."
    Dined on 12/28/2013
  • "We had the full tasting course. The first course, called "snacks" was 8 amuse-bouches served one at a time. Every bite was amazing. And every subsequent course was stunning. Plating was beautiful, food was delicious, and service was excellent. I haven't been to too many places in Portland yet, but color me impressed!"

  • "I don't understand why this place isn't packed to the gills every night. Portland, I guess. Food and service were both great, but it was really weird to be the only ones in the place."

  • "The food is always inventive. Cooking like this really isn't available anywhere else in town. The value for such avant garde cooking is very high. The service is attentive, the wine list is interesting and the food is creative."

  • "They bought out lots of interesting things to taste which makes the experience a lot of fun but I didn't like the favors of many of them. Tremendous service. Nice place. My main course was great but overall, the food wasn't good enough to make me want to go back. It's not a super nice or super hip place; more of a place older people with money would go for a foodie experience."

  • "The famous dessert flight was kinda of disappointing."
    Dined on 12/12/2013
  • "Outstanding in every respect, and priced accordingly. While incredibly expensive, a serious diner could not ask for better food, served in delicately small but satisfying portions their tasting menu is an evening's worth of one taste treat after another. Wine pairing are equally masterful."

  • "It has been a while since we had dined here and were we totally blown away by the service and the food preparation and taste! They were on there game for service, from greeting us when we came in, sitting us, explaining the course, staying on top of the silver ware and plates, and helping us out. The food was uniquely prepared and extremely tasty. No question we will be back sooner, but with friends!"
