A word from Carmelo's Ristorante Italiano - Austin
Carmelo’s Ristorante Italiano, Austin, is located in the historical "Old Depot Hotel" downtown across from the Hilton. Open since 1985, Carmelo's, was recently awarded the Seal of "Ospitalita Italiana" from the Italian Government for our use of authentic Italian products and the preparation of genuine Italian cuisine. We have created a menu that is not only carefully thought out and authentically Italian, but also one that uses the finest quality beef, veal and poultry and the freshest of seafood, and when available local produce. With an extensive wine list and options ranging from an award winning Risotto with Truffles, a tableside cooked Steak Diane and gluten free, vegetarian and vegan fare it is our aim that everyone will be satisfied. Our delectable desserts include homemade specialties such as Tiramisu and Millefoglie. Come on by and experience a little bit of Italy tucked away in downtown Austin! We are also in Houston.Continued

  • "Atmosphere was great as was the food. My hubby had to ask for a second drink, and I have up waiting thinking we. Could have coffee with dessert. When our dessert was delivered we asked for coffee, we're told someone else would get our coffee order bit no one ever came by. I get they they were trying to give us room to eat, but the service suffered as a result."

  • "We celebrated my 33 year old son's birthday at Carmelo's on April 5th and was very impressed by the fantastic service, the ambiance (to include the accordion player), and the delicious food! My entire party of 8 thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the celebration dinner and they even came out with a special birthday dessert for my son and the accordion player came over to the table to play for him. Many kudos to Carmlo's for the wonderful, memorable experience that we will cherish forever!"

  • "This resturaunt is located close to my apartment and came highly recommended by a few colleagues. I made a reservation for a Friday night and it was a fantastic idea. Service was spectacular, wine list was extensive and the appetizers and meals were great. This is a great date spot and one of the rare italian spots you can find in Austin. Acordian player was laying it down as well!"

  • "We have been celebrating our daughter's birthday at Carmelo's since she was 9. She recently turned 28! For a log time we kept thinking that she would want to change, but no, this is her place to celebrate, especially with the special birthday place and the bananas foster. We usually bring at least one guest and are never disappointed with the cocktails, choice of food, and excellent service. We also love the accordion music. Fun and filling place to eat!"

  • "Carmelo's is a nice place with friendly and excellent service. The sauces are authentic and delicious. They have specialty menus for gluten free and vegan eaters which is a plus as we tend towards dining in a mixed group. This part hasn't changed in years. Our last two visits were a bit disappointing, though. The quality seems the same, although the portions are smaller, prices higher, and the hot dishes were really more lukewarm when they arrived. I was surprised that there weren't more diners this time. It used to be packed at peak hours. Maybe they've fallen on hard times. We miss their Sunday brunches, too. If you like authentic Italian food in a calm atmosphere, its a nice place to visit in downtown Austin."

  • "My wife and I went for dinner Saturday night and it was incredible. It was a bit loud(somewhat expected). Our appetizers, main course and dessert were all great. I highly recommend for date-night and small groups. There were some men in a coat and tie and others in golf-style shirt and shorts."

  • "We were anxious to try Carmelo's because we are fans of his brother's restaurant in Bellingham, WA , and weren't not disappointed. This is an Italian restaurant located in an historic building and which was originally a Mexican restaurant. The decor is very European and the food and service excellent. We were only able to enjoy lunch on the way to the airport, but will definitely go for dinner when we are back in Austin."

  • "I travel to Austin frequently and always enjoy visiting this restaurant. the food is very good, the service is impeccable and the ambiance as good as it gets. The only downside are the prices. It is a very pricey menu and the portions are quite small....overall I will keep coming back!"

  • "Everything was great, including the service. Will definitely go there again."

  • "The Gnocchis with Black Truffles was absolutely incredible. The Veal Marsala was also outstanding. The Bread with olive oil, garlic and shreaded parmesan cheese is alway the best of anywhere in town. Lemon Sorbet is very cold and fresh and the best choice to mitigate the great garlic."

  • "I'm not sure if it was just because we were a larger group, but the service was really slow. It took over an hour for the appetizers. The food was fine though."

  • "We went there at the occasion of the SXSW conference. Food was ok, but nothing special, the waiters weren´t too attentive. I wouldn´t say that this is a place to go to, there are plenty of other and better options in town."

  • "We ate there as a family of four and had a very nice meal. The parking situation is typical downtown with the valet option. We chose a city lot right near by. Dinner was good, nothing very inventive, but very well prepared."

  • "It had been many years since I last visited Carmelo's. I was thoroughly impressed with the whole operation. Great wine list. Superb food... all 5 meals were perfect. Great ambiance. Great, well trained staff. Maybe a little pricey for everyday dining, but it is certainly one of the best places in Austin for a nice, memorable, romantic special occasion. We loved it."

  • "Great place all around. Large property for its downtown location, but well decorated and interesting. Had great service for a group of 10 on a busy Friday night. One order was botched in that it didn't come with the other orders, but it was good when when it did finally make it. Scallops to veal to chicken Parmesan everyone liked the food. Service was attentive without being intrusive. The accordion player was a nice touch. If you want an alternative to the downtown "burger, BBQ, tex-mex, and over-priced steak and seafood" Carmelo's is a charming change of pace with good food, service, and atmosphere!"

  • "Our night for celebration was enhanced by Congress Restaurant. The four of us ordered the tasting menu with paired wines. Unsurpassed in our experiences! The wines offered more than a pairing; they arroused taste buds that had been hiding and made them come alive. Of course, the food was often unusal and needed explanations that were freely and generously given. We asked copious questions and received polite, even entertaining answers. Discussions resulted from the food, the wine, the answers and went on from there. Our three and one-half hour event was worth every penny. We were replete."

On this visit, I brought my sister and brother-in-law, and we were all very pleased with the wine, food, ambience, and service. The guy playing the accordion live music was icing on the cake!"

  • "Went valentines night. Full house. Service very good. Their bread dipped in olive oil with Parmesan cheese was delicious. Eggplant Parmesan was fried too hard. Bananas foster outa sight. Great for valentines. I'm a foody though so thought they could have done better on entrees"

  • "The only thing is they put us on an outdoor table by the corner of the entrance. The table wasn't leveled so it cramped in the space and uncomfortable. I made this reservation over a month before and it was like we were last min reservations"

  • "On an average night this would have been a good restaurant but we were in town for a Marathon & Italian restaurants are always swamped as a result. Our party of 6 arrived promptly, were quickly greeted & taken to our table. Our waiter arrived with only a short delay. We were handed a limited "alternate" menu which didn't sit well with all of our party. Concessions were made with our party &the waiter was kind enough to ask the kitchen/chef about something "off menu" but on the regular menu & they obliged our request. The bread & dipping oil was free flowing which was a blessing because from the time of our arrival it took about an hour for our main course to arrive. The food was pretty good so we'll try them on a non-marathon evening!"

  • "Excellent food! Great service! My wife and I thought it was a very romantic location. It has the feel of a 5 star restaurant. It's a restaurant you must eat at. I highly recommend it. I can't say enough great things about this place."

  • "One of the worst dining experiences of my life. I used to come here at least once a week with work people for lunch, never again after this. Had planned a romantic, early valentines dinner and can say I've never had a worse experience ever. Luis Padilla (manager) only made it worse. Place has gone downhill and has worthless managers"

  • "I took my family here for my wife's birthday. We had great service with a wonderful meal, and the accordion player playing a song for my wife as they brought her the happy birthday dessert was "icing on the cake". Many thanks."

  • "I was visiting from out of town to see if Austin was right for a relocation for my job. I decided to invite a friend who lives near Austin to get the lowdown on Austin and Carmelos would be our meeting place. We had no trouble with the dinner which was good...one of us had lasagna, one had Osso Bucco, and I had the Lamb chops, all of which were very good, though not 5-star, much above what I would expect for a neighborhood gem in terms of presentation. What made the night so funny was the repeated oddity of my friend ordering more hot tea and not getting any . At one time, a table attendant said he CANNOT bring more. We decided this was English fluency problem but was really quite funny as this was repeated 8 times by different wait staff!!"

  • "We celebrated a friend getting an award and my birthday at Carmelo's in Austin. The food was fabulous. I had the lamb and escargot. It is the best escargot I have had outside of New Orleans or France. The lamb was a large portion and cooked as I requested. Our waiter was attentive, did not rush us, and did everything he could to make sure we had a special evening. I have been 4 times. Each time was perfect."

  • "we were 30 minutes late because of traffic. We were on a time crunch and the waitstaff made sure our food was delivered quickly. Everything was wonderful and we didn't feel rushed because of the way things were handled."

  • "This place is the Platonic ideal of what you think an Italian restaurant should be. It could be a movie set for an Italian restaurant in Federal Hill in Providence. Stone courtyard, twinkly lights, quiet efficient waiters, stick to your bones, first gear no frills Italian food, a desert cart, intimate seating, It takes you back in time when a restaurant was about food, service and a shared experience between friends. Is it hip - no. It's so retro they had an accordion player playing quietly in the background. It just seemed right. It's a place you take your wife when you want to make some points for "effort at romance" and just have a good talk over wine and food."
