Diner Reviews
  • "Always a fun spot for a group to eat drink and watch sports on the tube. Consistent comfort food with acceptable service and modern fun surroundings."

  • "My husband and I both enjoyed our food and drinks here. We had the grilled artichokes and each had a burger (the mother in law and ski jumper). We also had the rocky mountain mule and modus hoperandi which was great with our food. We will come back here when we visit again!"

  • "We were a rowdy group of seven women! The food was great, the service was amazing, and the atmosphere could not be beat. The live band played upbeat and fun music, and we were able to hear everyone at the table. A fun local spot in Steamboat!"

  • "We made last minute reservations on a Saturday night after a hard day of skiing and although the place was packed, we were seated within 10 minutes. We both ordered burgers which were fantastic! Great atmosphere with live music, good food and although very busy, the service was good as well."

  • "We tried to eat here a couple of weeks ago but could not get reservations...it's that busy! When we had an opportunity to go back to Steamboat, I immediately made reservations for dinner so we could give the place a try and see if it was as good as people say. We were glad we went. Our server was wonderful; she was attentive but not always hovering. The food was great! We had an appetizer (the business), country fried steak and the 1/2 rack of ribs, and then we enjoyed the banana bread pudding for dessert. Everything was delicious! We will definitely return here when we are back in Steamboat."

  • "Thanks for consistent yummy food. The spicy shrimp and grits are my personal favorite, as well as the fruit cobbler. But there are so many great options. This is a fun place to go often and find more favorites."

  • "This is always a great place to have dinner, enjoy the bands, just an all around great place to go."

  • "We LOVE this restaurant and make it a must on our annual trip to Steamboat. Each year we take the families that join us on the vacation. We waited 20 minutes from our reservation to be seated (uncontrollable by Carl's). Our server was assigned multiple other tables and a large group right next to ours. She tried, but we waited quite a while for our drinks and at least 20 minutes to take our order. Not a charm is that once the food came, it was in spurts and our sides, as well as soup -doesn't that come before the meal, didn't come out until we were near done eating. The waitress apologized, offered a single dessert for 3 mix-ups, AND the manager came by - we mentioned it - he said it didn't happen and WALKED AWAY! crazy STILL - amazing food"

  • "My second or third time here and the best yet. I actually did not realize how much "original", or scratch cooking they do - sauces, recipes, etc...they really go out of their way to have original/one of a kind dishes and recipes We had wings (fair), oysters (good), meatloaf (excellent!!!), artichokes (good), the fish of the day (excellent) and a burger (very good) The place was busy, but the service was friendly and attentive Definitely up a few notches on my list of local favorites!"

  • "This place was packed on a Tuesday night and I heard the hostess telling people without a reservation that the wait would be up to 2 hours. We were seated promptly at 6 which was our reservation time. Lots of food choices on the menu and we were all very pleased with our food choices. The wait staff was friendly, helpful and attentive despite how busy the place was."

  • "Live band, country tunes, a little dancing in front of the stage, a large bar packed with people - great lively scene Deviled eggs: Not worth the $7 price tag! Served 3 different ways (6 total pieces). None of the variations were fantastic Brussel sprouts: Best thing we tried from all the sides- delicious! Artichoke: I may just not be really into it Grits: Go for it if you want comfort food Cobbler: Not too sweet, which to me is great Bread pudding: Takes the full 10+ minutes beware, need a scoop of vanilla Would rave about this place if I paid half the price or if the service was better, but even in NY the best burgers are usually under $15 and they are definitely on a whole other level!"

  • "We loved our dinner at Carl's. I only wish we'd found it sooner- would've eaten there more than once during our vacation. Make a reservation to secure a spot. The Sunday Fried Chicken was fabulous! Very tasty and crunchy outside, yet tender and juicy on the inside. The mac&cheese and cornbread were amazing! My husband and older son had the pot roast and thought it was delicious -very tender and flavorful. My younger son had the meatloaf.but thought the sauce on the outside was a little too spicy for his taste. The earliest reservation we could get was 8:30 pm, and the chicken fried steak was sold out by the time we arrived. That would be my only complaint. If ever in Steamboat again, I will absolutely go back for the Chicken Fried Steak."

  • "Carl's Tavern is quite the hotspot. If you want to get in (even for lunch) be sure to make a reservation. You will not be disappointed. The food was incredible! They have great sandwiches and burgers and their appetizers are to die for. Their prices are quite reasonable too compared to some of the other restaurants in Steamboat."

  • "Had reservations at 7:45 but couldn't make it. Hostess was able to accommodate us at a later time. Restaurant was still hopping at 8:15. We were greeted promptly and food was expedited surprisingly quickly for the amount of diners present. The portions were substantial. Really enjoyed sharing the mixed green salad with mach, arugula, raddichio, chèvre, and apples. Brussels Sprouts and Shrimp and Grits were awesome. Both very rich. The filet was good but could have been warmer. And we had to wait for a steak knife after it had already arrived. They honored our free coupon for dessert which was divine, banana chocolate bread pudding. You won't go hungry here!"

  • "Carl's has a great layout and the food is good to very good. The only downfall for us is when they have live music, you really can't hear anyone at your table except for the person sitting next to you. I think that's just an inherent downfall of live music at a restaurant without an offset bar area. Just keep that in mind when going-not a good choice if you're wanting to enjoy your family's or friend's company."

  • "The restaurant was packed, dining by reservation only. However, service was friendly and efficient and food was excellent! We visited during Spring Break 2013 and loved it enough then that it has become a "must return" every year!"

  • "We had made reservations a few day in advance, when we arrived we were told our party of three had to sit in the bar because the booths are for larger parties.. We skied all day and had hope to sit and relax to an enjoyable dinner, we decided to walk across the street to the E3 a fine restaurant, and received what we were looking for. A relaxing dinning experience. Now I was asked to rate the food and service so to be fair I could not do that but had no choice."

  • "If we didn't venture off Lincoln, we wouldn't have found it. But friends of ours frequent Steamboat, and we happened to hop in after a day of snowshoeing. Hostess was very polite when we walked in. We were 45 minutes early for our reservation and she informed us she didn't have our table yet. No worries....we just went window shopping around the corner. We came back at around 6:40, our table was ready when we walked in the door, and she was very pleasant. The food was awesome! Our waitress, Jamie, was a sweetheart. I had the Elk tenderloin and my husband had filet. Both items were cooked to perfection, and oh so good! We also loved the brief singing entertainment in the kitchen! They were hopping like nobody's business and enjoying it!"

  • "Eventhough it has a tavern / sports bar type atmosphere, the food quality was outsanding. It's a great all around restaurant for family and friends after skiing. The wait staff was very friendly and accomidating. It also had great Gluten free options. The wine list is not extensive, however, the selection was good."

  • "We went to Carl's on a Saturday night, used Open Table and were glad we did. Friendly hostess and server. I had the shrimp and grits and would recommend it! My husband and a huge burger, son tried the club, and his girlfriend had the French dip. The portions are huge and the fries are excellent. Everyone enjoyed their meals. It is noisy, so be prepared for that. Always a safe choice when casual dining in Steamboat."

  • "If you are looking for great food in a relaxed and bustling atmosphere this is the place. Great menu of hearty comfort food (the pot roast was amazing), exceptionally good salads and plates for sharing. We were a group of six at a large booth near the bar on a Friday night. The place was packed and fairly loud, but an overall fun atmosphere. This is not the place to go for a quiet dinner, at least not on a weekend. The margarita with fresh squeezed lime and orange juice was delicious, and they didn't skimp on the tequila. Lots of local brews on tap and in bottles. The Olympics happened to be on all of the bar TVs and the crowd cheered readily for the local favorites. Great spot."

  • "Carl's is a great local high end sports bar that has live music on the weekends. I've always had a good meal here but usually stick to the burger or the fillet. They offer devil eggs and jarred pickles which are good and I like to see that stuff on a menu. The bar is usually very busy and they have sports on the televisions. Ive been there for bluegrass bands or new grass."

  • "It was our first time at Carls and we had heard lots about it from the local... quite impressed we sat in the extension if you will the new addition (shop next door) so this was great for our group as it was away from the noisier section...especially for this night as we had new friends in town and wanted to talk ... food and service was good and the ambience was great... overall would recommend Carls"

  • "We loved out dinner. Some of the appetizers were a surprise to see on the menu and we enjoyed the choice of out of the ordinary! Sad that the chicken pot pie was on the web menu but not an option at the restaurant. Heard it was so yummy."

  • "I have been trying to eat here for awhile but always get turned away because it's so busy. Made a reservation for 2 and they only had 5:00. My son and I had a very nice dinner together. Even being seated so early the bar and restaurant were hopping and people were already waiting for a table. We had the best wings I've ever had as part of happy hour. Then I enjoyed a nice entree of Bass since it was the fish of the day and my son had meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Good food, good atmosphere. Worth the planning ahead and making a reservation."

  • "It had been almost one year since our last visit and we we did not love it as we had previously. We had a late reservation at 8:30 and we were seated at a bar table. The service was adequate but nothing special. The food was the biggest disappointment however, with an undercooked chicken fried steak with very runny gravy and cold mashed potatoes. So much for our new favorite restaurant in Steamboat! Will most likely try again though, maybe they were having a bad night?"

  • "Very busy bar and grill. Wait staff was very attentive. Dined with my family. My son raved about the chicken soup, and stuffed baked potato. My other son ordered the ribs and said they where delicious. Where the food fell short, was the Halibut special. While it looked fantastic, both my wife's and my servings where over cooked. For the price I expected better."

  • "We had a tough day and it wasn't feeling much like a Valentine's dinner. Grazie, the hostess, greeted us and understood our situation. She found the perfect table for us. Our server Real, was exceptional! We ordered the Brussels sprouts as am appetizer. They were better than eating potato chips. We ordered the pork chops and the ribeye. Both were outstanding! Our whole experience turned a very tense dinner into a romantic Valentine's celebration. The music was the final touch to a great evening!"

  • "There are quite a few great dishes here but one of my favorites is the blue cheese burger... Great flavor...add the onion rings and you won't be disappointed. Try the ninety degree Colorado beer."

  • "We go to Carl's on a regular basis and Winter Carnival didn't deter us despite the parking disaster due to the evening fireworks show at Howlsen Hill. We made a reservation knowing WC was on, and good we did as when the fireworks ended the joint lit up with people. They had changed the wine list which was nice to see a bigger selection, but we come for the Love Nuggets appy and Pot Roast main then do a special as the 2nd main for the 2 of us. The food is always good and service (despite the carnival moving indoors at 8pm) was still good despite the staff having hardly a minute to breathe. You'll find a great bar, family friendly dining that turns over to bar live music hotspot after 10pm. Never disappointed at Carls!"

  • "Filet was over priced. There were 3 in our party and my daughter and I got the filet, it was good not great, definitely overpriced. My husband got the rotisserie chicken and said it was average. We also had salads and cheese grits all of which was very good. Atmosphere was great and so was out server, extremely friendly and sweet."

  • "Went to Carl's last weekend with 3 other out of town guests, and had a wonderful dinner. Booked reservation online and was seated right away, prompt service once seated, we enjoyed the interaction with the staff the whole time there. This place has a very active bar scene but it was not over-bearing at all, with good views of the TV's to catch the Olympics. I had the NY Strip steak, cooked perfectly with the Maitre'd Butter on it, awesome! We shared sides, especially enjoyed the twice baked potato dish which went well with the steak. Additionally, the Moscow Mules we had were very good. Excellent dinner and my guests all commented on how much they enjoyed it."

  • "I am glad we reserved ahead as Carl's is a vibrant ski town foodie bar and grill. We were 6 for dinner during Winter Festival week and I heard very long wait times quoted to walk in traffic. The staff was friendly, efficient, and the food was very good. Carl's seems to be a town favorite and stays busy. We had a great evening and everyone in our party said they had great food too."

  • "We skied all day and were very hungry, so all the appetizers and beers and cocktails were brought out fast! Food was spectacular and the ambiance is like a sports bar, but family friendly and cozy."

  • "Do you know that your front reception personnel are telling people to come back in March if you don't have a reservation? We made an on line reservation the same day we wanted to try this hot spot. Because we had been into the business 3 times in January and were never offered an option to make a reservation as they laughed us out the door. We are very patient customers but that attitude sends the wrong message to weekend visitors when we know you are busy. We own a home in steamboat and have tried many of the restaurants and go back to the friendly service with better than average food. The server was great. The noise was a major distraction."
