A word from Carino Japanese Bistro
Japanese Geisha married to Italian man. She moved to Italy and tried to make Japanese food. But no one got interested in her food at that time. She missed Japanese food but couldn't make it. Her challenge had started to make "Japalian" food....

Diner Reviews
  • "As Carino is just two blocks from our home, we had a relaxed walk on a pleasant early summer evening to one of our favourite restaurants. The service, as usual, was welcoming and helpful and the food, as usual, was amazing. We started with the Assorted Skewers as an appetizer and a lovely bottle of wine, then I moved on to the Lamb Cutlet. The tomato curry sauce was a perfect compliment to the lamb and the black truffle-mash potato. My husband went with his usual Teriyaki Wagyu Beef Burger on a rice bun which was great, as usual. Stuffed and happy, we made our way home."

  • "After a fantastic brunch with friends I decided to go back for dinner and was truly delighted. I had their 4 course meal with wine pairing and it was amazing. This restaurant is truly a little gem, the food combinations are so interesting and they truly work! I will be back soon! Great job Carino team!"

  • "The food was fantastic! There was a great selection of Japanese teas, and the wine list was well done. Excellent use of a small space."

  • "Still like the food but the quality is not as good as before. I liked the menu before it got modified, such as the lamb an md strawberry dessert. Still like the food in general and would still recommend to friends."

  • "The food and wine paring were great together. Pleasantly surprised. Would return to try the other dishes"

  • "Amazing food! Something different. Love the duck! Duck!! Duck!!! Picture worthy presentation. Feels like you're having dinner in new York or las Vegas! check this restaurant out."

  • "This was my second time at Carino. The first time left me unimpressed as well. The service at Carino is incredibly SLOW. Despite there being few other diners in the restaurant, our food took forever. Getting a server to your table is also not an easy feat. This time we had the skewer appetizer. Some of the skewers were less than lukewarm by the time they made it to the table, and none tasted that incredible. We had an assortment of entrees, while edible, none of them were particularly great. For the price and lack of service, there are much better options. "

  • "Unique food flavors with Asian/Italian overtones. Restaurant space is small. Friendly service."

  • "duck duck duck and veal were my favourites this time. Gnocchi with pork belly was always delish..... Wasn't a fan of the chicken linguini though."

  • "This was our fourth visit, we return time and again because the menu is great and frequently evolving, and the service is top notch. There are different specials as well, on the blackboard, so don't forget to look up! This is a real dining experience. "

  • "Great food, good service. Would recommend and will definitely return. Reservations a good idea as seating is rather limited."

  • "The fusion of Japanese and Italian seems unlikely, but works. The wine selection is a fit complement to the cuisine. Things got a bit noisy, and the view is less than exiting (Edmonton Trail). Would definitely return."

  • "A quite varied and enjoyable 4-course meal with wine parings. The Japanese fusion influence to Italian cuisine offered a nice variety. Meals were nicely plated and portions were just right. A restaurant that is on my repeat list."

  • "I love the creative unusual menu. A lot of the dishes are a fusion between Italian and Japanese (e.g. miso cappuccino) and some of the creations sound quite adventurous, but when you try it each one of them is an amazing composition and the chef clearly knows how to blend unusual flavors. The owner also has great suggestions for wine pairings with your food. Trust his expertise! We had a wonderful evening and can highly recommend this little gem."

  • "You simply have to try the tuna salad. Okay that sounds boring but it's anything but. The Japanese fusion on what could have been a regular fare was outstanding. The surprise in the raw tuna and avocado is the sea asparagus. Excuse me as my mouth waters at the thought. Great date night place. The only down side is the parking as there is very limited space, so be prepared to walk a block. but its worth it. The prices aren't through the roof but they aren't cheap either. But I've never felt I've overpaid."

  • "I love Carino's. The service is friendly and very attentive. They have the greatest wine decanters I've ever seen. Ask for the snake. The food is wonderful. My only complaint on a cold and windy night is that when the door opens, the wind blows through the entire restaurant and we all freeze. One of the downsides of a small, intimate restaurant."

  • "This place definitely blew away my expectations. Small one room restaurant creates energetic ambiance, so you can speak without being overheard and not have to shout at each other. All the dishes were original and incredible. We had 3 different appetizers and 4 different mains. They were all amazing. You can dress up or down, the service is polite, honest, happy and professional (no bubbly earl's staff here). Each of the two Spanish wines we had were excellent and good value. You definitely leave thinking you've found a cool secret spot."

  • "We have tried Carino twice now. Brunch was tasty and interesting but not anything wildly out of the ordinary. Dinner was delicious. The duck confit was good but the veal was delicious. The servers are always too quiet. It is almost impossible to hear them with one person between you. Love the Riedel decanters. Food is good. Price is decent. Service is acceptable."

  • "I've been to Carino multiple times now. Though dinner was tasty enough, I feel the lunch menu has more interesting Japanese-Italian dishes, while the dinner menu seemed be more Italian. So I keep going back to try the various lunch menu items. So far, the highlight of every meal was the Maccha Cotta (Green tea panna cotta) for dessert. I had not tried a Japanese green tea flavoured item I had liked before this, and this was amazing...every time. As for the other menu items, I've ordered the Mentaiko Pasta, which was good, but not as unique in flavour as I'd like for a fusion dish, the Organic Fried Duck with Quinoa Waffles...very tasty, and the Miso Ramen, which was flavourful, but way too oily. The Yuzu Rare Cheesecake was also fantastic."

  • "The food is very good here but the last two times we have eaten here the services has been incredibly slow (and the last time was a later in the evening on a Sunday). The servers did not know the menu very well at all and had no knowledge of their cheese or wine lists. In ordering the cheese and charcuterie we were told twice that the items listed (that we had ordered) were not available but the server had no idea what to recommend that would be similar. Slow service as well made the evening too long and diminished our experience despite the food that being very good."

  • "We went down to Calgary from Edmonton for a day and a half food trip, and stopped by here for lunch. The ahi tuna poke and quinoa waffles with duck were so good that we had to order a third entrée! The kobe beef on rice wasn't nearly as good as the others, but it wasn't bad at all. No complaints for the meal. Service and ambiance were good, but nothing special. Will be back for dinner."

  • "Followed En Route's main course recommendation paired with a lovely pinor noir and was not disappointed and neither was my companion who had the yummy wild mushroom risotto. One of the best duck plates in the city. While the atmosphere is not overly romantic, it seemed to be a dating hot spot."

  • "We were lucky to have Carino prepare a 7 course chef's tasting with premium wine pairings. It was absolutely amazing. Every dish was exquisitely prepared, and the pairings were meticulously chosen. Highly recommended restaurant, but if you are part of the chef's tasting scene we would highly recommend you let Carino setup a tasting for you."

  • "After booking a few weeks in advance & confirming my reservation for our special anniversary, we arrived very disappointed that they tried to sit us at the worst table in house. They reluctantly agreed to change us to a better table later. The restaurant was louder than most pubs and inappropriate for any conversations. The staff spoke very little English and seemed inexperienced. Maybe we got them during a busy night right after the Enroute award. The food, French Kiss (beef tongues) was good, until we discovered our dishes all followed the same formula: argula & cheese. Using seaweed or eel do not make a meal Japanese inspired. Also, where's the Italian influrence? Guess I shouldn't have expected Kyoto meets Florence."

  • "We would highly recommend Carino. They have a great wine list and finely crafted entrees and desserts. Highly recommend the chicken miso and cheesecake - the latter was so amazing we ordered extra afterwards. This was our best meal in a new restaurant in Calgary for 2013."

  • "I didn't quite know what to expect when I went to Carino, other than the lunch menu looked very good. I was very pleased with my experience; a nice cozy decor (larger groups should probably make a reservation to ensure seating), decent coffee, fairly extensive tea menu (although I didn't try it this time) and well designed and tasty menu. I had a hard time choosing what to eat, but went with the Loco Moco which was excellent; the dessert cheesecake was also extremely enjoyable with excellent value for money. Parking is street parking, depending on when you go, it may be easier to find parking than others, but I was able to find parking 100 m away. This place is definitely getting a return visit as so many more dishes to try!"

  • "I had the waffles with chicken confit for brunch and it was delicious. The food is a very unusual Japanese-French fusion and it is meticulously prepared and presented. It is apparent they care about the food they serve. I have eaten there a number of times before they were available through OpenTable and was never disappointed. Leave the kids at home - it is a very small place."

  • "We have been to Carino a few times before, every time the food was very good and the friends that we bring also enjoyed as well. The waitress is always very friendly and service with a smile. We have try their set dinner (4 courses) on Wednesday and find it very exciting. This time it did not disappoint and our friends was surprise to find this Japanese/ French Fusion cuisine does work and it does bring a new twist and wonderful taste to the food. We have a great time at Carino."

  • "Decent. Not amazing as the ratings seem to indicate. Also the interior shot of the restaurant verse the actual setting have a high contrast over the ambiance that is actually presented."

  • "Outstanding calamari in a light tempura batter. My main course, crab ravioli, was delicious, but my husband's main course, the seabream, was bland. Our dessert, a plum flavored cheesecake was beautifully presented , but lacked flavor. The wine list is great and we had a crisp Chablis which was perfect with the seafood. The service is professional. Overall, a nice evening, but stay clear of the seabream."

  • "I've taken customers to Carino on three business lunches so far. With the interesting menu, great wine list (the owner was a Sommelier for some high end Calgary restaurants), and proximity to downtown (a car is needed), it provides a great atmosphere. The food is delicious. The menu has just the right mystique and blend of Japanese and European choices for adventurous eaters, yet there are the more 'stable' choices for the less adventurous."

  • "Carino takes a simple appetizer, vegetable sticks, and elevates it to a level I could not believe. All our meals were just fantastic, and the service is wonderful and friendly. We've been there a few times and each time we wonder why we don't go more often! Make sure you get your wine decanted in one of their wonderful vessels!"

  • "Been there for lunch & dinner. Great flavour & texture. Hope chef will change menu from time to time for variety. Nice bistro type atmosphere. Good value for the quality of food for the price. Will be back, likely as regular if there are changes in menu from time to time."
