  • "I have been to Cafe Malta many times over the last year but not in the last 6 months. It was a welsome sight, smell, and taste to go back. The service, food, and drinks were outstanding. Love this place."

  • "We loved the comfortable feel to the restaurant and the very helpful and attentive service. We will definitely be back again. The steak and fish were cooked perfectly and the timing of our order was spot on."

  • "Our server was attentive and sweet. She took care of us very well and even switched out a glass of wine that I didn't like. I really love this little restaurant. I wish it was closer to where I live. Don't let the location in the strip mall put you off - it is so worth it."

  • "I moved to Austin from New York in January, and this was my third visit to Cafe Malta. It was great. The food is good, fresh and well-made, the service was friendly and warm, and the prices were reasonable. I expect that I will come here a lot in the future.,"

  • "The good was unique and very tasty. The portions were small. It was a bit cold. Overall: a nice experience."

  • "I am only giving three stars for one reason only; while my companions dish was piping hot; my broccoli and potatoes were undercooked and lukewarm at best. I did not send it back, but did mention it to our server, who was pleasant. We loved the ambiance; a true neighborhood gem. We will return to try more dishes."

  • "We do the Tour De Forks and have also written a review for here before. So last time, the food was great but the service was left to be desired. It seems that the message was sent as this time the service was much, much, better. The food came quick, the drinks came relatively quick, and the server answered our questions to our liking. Please keep this up! Tour de Forks is awesome and the improved service only helps to compliment the superior quality food!"

  • "I've been to Malta, so when my wife and I saw this restaurant on yelp, we knew we had to try it. Great ambience, great cocktail menu, tried several of them and loved them all. Great prices, great food, good prices on the wine. Been back once already and want to take our friends."

  • "Love love love this place! Finally got to taste the French Onion Tart! Worth the wait! This place is right around the corner from home and we come here as much as possible. It's it getting louder and louder but still a fabulous South Austin treat."

  • "Excellent food, pleasant wait staff but service lagged a bit...which is understandable as it's a small, very popular busy restaurant. My favorite item is the Gnocchi...best I've had! Looking forward to trying other menu options."

  • "When we discovered Cafe Malta it was EXCEPTIONAL all around. On our last two visits have been less than stellar. One weekend it was really overcrowded and obviously the meals were coming out slow. The next weekend we went during lunch and in spite that there were not as many people the service was poor given you were understaffed since the bar tender was doubling as a waiter, two of our servings were very dry as if they had been forgotten under the heat lamps of the kitchen Specifically the Andaluz Fish was very dry and tasteless and by far a very overpriced experience. For as much as we LOVED the place I suspect that If service and food quality continues to decline this may be the last of our visits for us…"

  • "The service is severely lacking. I'm thinking they are trying to give the Mediterranean feel by being slow in between courses. Or even making you wait awhile for brunch. That's if you don't have to ask for silverware or wait on drinks. That said, the food is unique and delicious. If you are willing to wait, it's a treat."

  • "My friend and I had a l lovely lunch at cafe Malta. The food was well prepared and nicely plated. The service was nice, not rushed, and the noise level was relatively low. We could speak in a normal voice. The cafe Malta is also quite easy to find in a small strip mall"

  • "Both times we visited, we had a large party and a 2 year old. The staff immediately got the 2 year old situated and even brought a large coloring book and crayons one time. How can everyone enjoy themselves if the baby is unruly! That certainly doesn't define Cafe Malta, it's a great dining experience. Interesting well-prepared food and cocktails, vegetarian options and daily features. I really cannot believe this interesting restaurant is on Slaughter Lane in South Austin behind a Taco Bell! It has an uptown feel without all the hassles."

  • "A great place to find interesting, tasteful and artistic "Mediterranean". Mediterranean in quotes because it's sometimes difficult to pin down just exactly what is Mediterranean. Considering the width and breadth of cuisines around the Med - Greek, Italian, French, Moroccan, Lebanese, Turkish, etc, - Cafe Malta takes elements of several of these, adds their own twist and creates a seemingly new dish with echoes of the elemental cuisines of the Med. From the fresh, tasteful combinations for salads and appetizers to the main entrees, an all around winner. Despite it's refined dishes, you feel completely as home as if you dinning in your favorite PJs and slippers - but please wear something tasteful when you go there. :)"

  • "I probably would have never ventured into this strip center restaurant except that so many people recommended it. My husband and I had a lovely dinner and will return often."

  • "We've been several times, our recent visit may be the last. Food was just ok., lacking the craftsmanship we'd experienced in the past. Kitchen seemed rushed, food was overly salty. And I'm a pretty progressive person, but a waitperson with a lip cuff is off putting, not appealing. She also seemed easily distracted by the table of guys next to us. We and others around us had to call her away from chatting to order another drink, etc."

  • "Because this is Mediterranean restaurant, my husband and I thought they serve Greek food. Nope! When we got there, we were nicely surprised. We still enjoyed their food very much!! We had no idea what RILLETTES is but we were glad we ordered it! Yum! THE LEVANT wasn't something we expected but still tasty. THE MALTESE CHICKEN and MALTAGLIATI were delicious. We're looking forward to trying other dishes they serve! Oh, and their dessert was excellent! Took some time for them to prepare them but was totally worth it :)"

  • "One doesn't always expect an exceptional meal from an easy-to-miss spot in a strip mall; make no mistakes, Cafe Malta offers the palette an enjoyable experience! I have dined there 3 times now and have never been disappointed. I am consistently impressed with their dishes and drink concoctions. There's not much hustle and bustle, which gives off a relaxed atmosphere, but the service is on point. I recommend this place to people looking for either a neat date spot, place to meet with family or even coworkers. If you live in South Austin, you really must go."

  • "I looked forward to the special Valentines menu, however the food was mediocre at best. I won't go into specifics but check your food before you start eating it. Trust me. Our waitress was nice and was really working hard but she seemed to have to many tables, so we kept having to grab her when she walked by to order, get more drinks etc."

  • "Service was great. Food was good. Not a big menu. Drink menu wasn't great."
    Dined on 2/13/2014
  • "Had the mistaken idea this was a Greek café from the name of it, but happily it is not. The food is of a much more broader appeal, since it is inspired by a number of countries in the Mediterranean region. The seared fish was perfectly cooked; the daily special salads and deserts were delightful. Look forward to trying more of their offerings."

  • "We were pleasantly surprised by the interior of the restaurant. All four of us ordered different dishes and all of us were pleased. I had the chicken pot pie. It was delicious! I'm not sure what spices were used but they added a subtle, unique flavor that I really enjoyed. Our server was very knowledgeable and attentive, but did not hover. We will definitely add Café Malta to our list of favorite dining places."

  • "I request things to be at my table for ambience and they listen to the request. They have a great sense of humor and fabulous food. Plus there's a monthly "Tour de Forks" that has a 4 course meal from a select country for $25/person. We schlep all the way from Parmer for Cafe Malta so you gotta know it's work a trek from the other side of the city."

  • "We have been to Cafe Malta numerous times and the food is usually very good. On this Saturday night, we took several guests. The service was very slow --about an hour + to get main dish. The drinks were ok and food was ok but not their usual quality. Fish was good but risotto was mushy. Hummus is excellent."

  • "Pleasant atmosphere. Good service. Overall good food. I really enjoyed the Lasagna."

  • "Five months after first dining there we decided to return. The live music was still too loud making it almost impossible to have a conversation. The food was a little better, but still not worth the prices they charge. The only great thing about the place was our server, Hilary."

  • "Packed full on a Saturday night, we were glad we had reservations, which were promptly honored. How can we have never heard of this restaurant before? Maybe because it's tucked into a non-descript strip mall in South Austin where you wouldn't expect to find this kind of quality. The menu is compact, but innovative and very fairly priced. Portions are appropriately sized (not tiny) - and if you have a starter and main course, you might actually be able to have room for dessert without feeling stuffed. The Butternut Squash Cheesecake made my night, and it's been a long time since I've ordered dessert in a restaurant. The fun wine list was mostly under $35 - how refreshing! Give Cafe Malta a shot!"

  • "Everything we had was amazing. Brisket ravioli? Homemade sausage? Perfectly cooked swordfish. And what tops it off is the fact that they listened to my request in the comments box when I made my reservation. I asked for a photo of a cute frenchie or monkey to be at our table. When we arrived, there was aframed photo of a French bulldog in a monkey costume. Glorious. It kept us company all through dinner. What a great place."

  • "We had a good New Years experience at Cafe Malta in 2013 so we were excited to return for 2014 with friends and brought a guest chef along. Unfortunately, the experience and the food was not as well executed as the year before and lacked creativity and expertise in preparation. The soup course had great flavor but was overly salted. Several of the courses were not at proper temp and over/under seasoned. Preparation consistency was a big problem. There is no excuse for poorly prepared food anytime and particularly on a set menu for a special occasion, I hope that the owners take the steps to correct problems in the kitchen and with the menu planning and are able to continue to grow into a great establishment, other chef's are watching."

  • "This neighborhood restaurant has become a favorite of our family. The food is always interesting, well-prepared and tasty. The New Year's Eve seven-course tasting menu was a wonderful culinary adventure, exposing us to new tastes which we greatly enjoyed. I highly recommend that you try this restaurant---you won't be disappointed. The drinks are also wonderful---I highly recommend the Licosa."

  • "We happened to be in Austin for our anniversary and we selected Cafe Malta for our special dinner out. The menu was creative, the food was excellent, and service was outstanding. We were very happy with our selection and the full tables suggest that others have found and enjoyed this venue, too."

  • "A blend of Mediterranean dishes in an intimate setting sums up Cafe Malta. The service was very good and many of the dishes hit their mark. The tables are made up plainly but the creativity in the menu more than offsets that. The restaurant has a large board of daily specials that added some nice options. The waiter helped us select a nice wine that kept everyone happy. Can recommend the PEI mussels, brisket ravioli, but not the gnocchi (overcooked and way too salty, returned). The Autumn Apple and Levant salads were noteworthy, but the grilled watermelon was mundane. Paella, fall lasagna and the Maltese chicken were all excellent. Deserts were really tasty and coffee well brewed. Prices were reasonable for the quality of food and service."

  • "There are lots of great restaurants in Austin, but they're mostly downtown or on the north side. Cafe Malta is the first one I would put in the "great" category on our (far south) side of town. Tucked into a strip mall, this place is so much better than we though that we're still kicking ourselves for not dining here sooner. The food is a great mix of French and Mediterranean, and the pairings/suggestions were right on the money. Highly, HIGHLY recommended to folks even north of the river. Worth the drive!"
