Diner Reviews
  • "We go to Cafe Giovanni for the food and music. The last time we were there the crowd was so loud that we could hardly hear the singers. This time however we were seated by the piano and that was great. It is somwhat pricey, but with the singers we find it a good value."

  • "If you like good food and music, this is the place to be. Deco is a bit dated."

  • "I enjoyed a fine meal here thanks to my server Tim. His recommendations, the portobello mushroom appetizer and the penne pasta jambalaya, which was perfectly seasoned, hit the spot. The quality of each dish exceeded my expectations."

  • "Food was great. Innovative Italian cuisine. Bruschetta was prepared with tomatoes, garlic, and olives and served on a thick slice of toasted Italian bread. First time I have had it served that was and it was very good. Salad which was prepared with strawberries was delicious. My husband had the veal Parmigianino and I had spicy shrimp served over polenta. Veal was very tender and flavorful and the shrimp were extremely moist and tender. Added attraction..a pianist and two opera singers made the dinner a night to remember."

  • "New Orleans is packed with great restaurants, but Cafe Giovanni should be on everyone's "must" list. The service was friendly, helpful and attentive without being overwhelming. The menu was amazing! The shrimp caprese appetizer was incredible - I would go back just for that. Highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Excellent dining experience. Shrimp and Duck Decatur was great. Loved the cheese grits too. We will return."

  • "I took my girlfriend here for dinner on her birthday and she was more than impressed. Italian opera singers serenaded her at the table (by request) and they even wrote Happy Birthday on her dessert. The atmosphere was romantic and pleasant. I'd recommend Cafe Giovanni to anyone who would like to have a fancy dinner and a nice evening out with their sweetheart."

  • "Just off Canal in the French Quarter, this restaurant offers standard italics fare. The decor is quite dated, and the food is overpriced although perhaps in line with other area restaurants."

  • "Good food, great French Quarter location just off Canal Street."

  • "The meal was fabulous. I had the Chef's award winning signature dish of VooDoo Shrimp. It was the best! The waitress thought the kitchen was a little slow on the appetizers and brought us an additional appetizer to make up for the slow service. I was pleasantly surprised since I didn't think the appetizer was unreasonably slow in coming. Our waitress was very good, she didn't bother us and waited until we had both eaten portions of our dinner before checking with us on about our meal. Dessert was exceptional as well. Portions were just about perfect, not too big where we left an additional serving, but enough to feel as if we got our moneys worth. I would not hesitate on recommending this restaurant to anyone."

  • "The night we chose to go to Cafe Giovanni my wife and I were looking for a romantic Italian escape in the NOLA French Quarter. We heard this was a nice resturaunt with a romantic feel. When we got there, we felt that the party had started without us. There were two connected areas and we were placed beside a table of 15 while the other half of the resturaunt appered empty. We had a great server who did everything she could to make the evening great"

  • "Well, being from the Northeast USA, I usually avoid Italian Restaurants outside of the area. Also, I consider the best half of me to be Italian. Given the cold night and the close proximity to my hotel (JW Marriott), I tried this restaurant. I am so very happy I did. There were three of us for dinner. The waiter was extremely knowledgeable, and recommended 3 appetizers that we shared. All of them were fantastic! Just a wonderful blend of traditional Italian with a local twist. I can say the same for the Entrees. The Pasta Jambalaya was excellent, and the eggplant parmigiana was delightful. As an Italian food snob, I promise you will not be disappointed. Even the Italian wine we selected was spot on. You need to try this place!!"

  • "The pasta jambalaya was delightful. Since we waited a bit longer for our table to be available, we were offered complementary wine which was nice. Dining room was vibrant and fun. Service was very friendly!"

  • "our party of 6 was put around a table so was so large we couldn't converse. No bread or even olives provided. Bloody Marys were grainy with no discernable liquor. Bruscetta starter didn't go around. Food was tasty but skimpy. We arrived hungry and left hungry. Struggling restaurant cutting corners and hoping patrons won't notice. We noticed. Only savings passed on to customer, the inattentive service meant a skimpy tip."

  • "The place definitely felt special. The service was on par with a five star restaurant. The food was great with some of the courses being outstanding. I don't really like opera but it is nice because it is different. Would go here again."

  • "Chef Duke is a magician with culinary delights. The Restaurant is as good as better. Get the "Feed Me" menu. It is well worth it."

  • "Giovanni's was the biggest disappointment of our trip to New Orleans. The service was attentive, but the food was only so-so. The fried green tomato appetizer was a real standout - I would go just for that - but the main courses were let downs. A minimum requirement of an Italian restaurant is to cook pasta correctly. My meal went down-hill from there. Hopefully we just hit it on an off-night."

  • "Cafe Giovanni is a excellent place to have date night. I loved the romantic atmosphere and the excellent food and wine. They had live true Italian music being played live."

  • "The food was terrible. The service even worst, example, after we had got our main course the waitress asked if we wanted the bread. We had starter and salad then bread. Will not go back."

  • "We are from TN and couldn't wait to get back to Cafe Giovanni 's. Everything was excellent! Food, service & ambiance was nothing less than fantastic. This is a must for outstanding Italian cuisine in the NOLA area."

  • "Chose this restaurant for a NY Eve fixed price/menu dinner based on past good experience. The intent here was a romantic NYE dinner in a restaurant known for its ambience (and roving opera singers). Sure, the menu was limited, and "subject to change without notice", but there were two selections that seemed perfect, including the good ol' Italian specialty, Spaghetti and Meat Sauce. Well, what we got was a very noisy atmosphere (not partying, just noise) enhanced by the competition of the opera singers. The menu had been nearly completely changed, with not one basic Italian choice (closest was a Chicken Parm recipe). Highly disappointed with the atmosphere and the menu, although the food we ordered WAS excellent."

  • "The menu offers a lot to choose from. Portions and quality is right on par. My waiter was pleasant and efficient. There was a female piano player and opera singer to entertain while dining. I would go back again."

  • "Cafe giovanni is a fantistic restaurant focused on rustic Italian and creole cuisine. It is a beautiful atmosphere with exposed bricks and rich oak walls. A lovely grand piano is accompanied by a singer with an angelic voice singing classic italian operatic songs. The food is exquisite and some of the best italian in new orleans outside of the typical new orleans Resturants. This is a new orleans gem and well worth the visit."

  • "Sad to say it but the food here is no longer anything to write home about. I had a duck dish which was satisfactory but my wife's veal dish was entirely tasteless. I have no idea how they did it except to say that usually when this occurs it is the result of a heavy reliance on canned ingredients. My children each had fettuccini and the same was true about their dishes. The price points are high. The tables are packed in. We knew this, went there for the food and it was a bad decision. We've eaten there a number of times in the past but I'm guessing that the lure of prepackaged ingredients and the attendant profit margins was too much to resist. Sadly, it shows in the quality of the food."

  • "We have dined at Cafe Giovanni many times and have never been disappointed. Chef Duke runs a really nice restaurant and the opera singers strolling around the tables are charming and entertaining. Our recent dinner was on Xmas Eve and the chef had a nice 3 course fixed price menu with something for everyone. The price of $55 was very reasonable and as usual we enjoyed the food and the ambiance."

  • "We experienced this cozy off-the-beaten-path gem on a cold, rainy night. The food was awesome, freshly made and wonderfully tasty! It was our experience, however, that the wait-staff isn't aware that they are serving quality food in a quality setting......we had to virtually beg for bread, and no one seems to be aware of how an offer of Parmesan cheese might complement a meal. Definitely go for the food and the romantic setting off the main-path of the French Quarter....just don't expect too much from the staff........"

  • "We were seated directly next to the grand piano. While we had an excellent view of the two roaming singers, they were so loud it was difficult to comfortably converse. The food was OK, not great. Good meatballs, mediocre fettucini, good mozzarella caprese. Dessert was tasty. Still, it was enjoyable. They should add some gluten free pasta and other GF options to the menu. The bar was nice, but again, music volume was too loud."

  • "Food was nice. It was sorry a desert in the menu was not available. The waiter tried to fill a new wine in the glass we drank a different wine previously. Need education,"

  • "Wonderful waitress! Wish food had been better. Enjoyed the garlic bread and chocolate mousse but my pasta wasn't hot and chicken was a bit tough (especially cutting it with the butter knife supplied)."
