  • "My wife and I celebrated our anniversary at cafe Bastille. We went to their Sunday brunch. There were very few people in the restaurant and cafe Bastille was the only restaurant on belden lane that was open. We wanted some quiet time so this was perfect. No wait, the food was good, and the price reasonable. We will go back if we want a quiet Sunday brunch. "

  • "I brought my boyfriend here to celebrate his college acceptance and the food and service were great. However, the waiter kept upselling and told us it was just a dollar more on a bunch of items to substitute than our voucher but it was not. I ended up spending $64 (with no drinks or alcohol) plus the $39 group which was much more than I had budgeted as a high school student. Be very wary of the upsell here, it gets expensive fast!"

  • "I really was pleased with my experience at Cafe Bastille. I had reasonable expectations leading up to dinner and I can safely attest that Cafe Bastille surpassed what I was looking forward to. Tucked away on a little side street that belies the beauty and ambience of the restaurant. The staff is very friendly and professional. The menu options were highlights of some the best of French cuisine. The prices are fairly reasonable. All in all, you cannot go wrong with a nice warm evening dinner at Cafe Bastille."

  • "I wasn't sure what to expect - my last 3 "French" restaurants have all had different food! Most items here were casserole or stew-like. Very tasty. Mesclune salad & onion soup were good. We had the Boeuf Bourguignon and the Chicken dish. Both were very good. For dessert, the Chocolate Creme Brulee was OK, but the Raspberry Key Lime was tasteless. Really too bad. Not inexpensive. Even the Prix-fixe meal is $35, I think. We had a $39 Travelzoo voucher for the meals, but our check, which had 2 coffees and one mixed drink, tax and mandatory 18% tip, came to an additional $44, so $83 total. Not bad, but without the voucher it would have been $35 + $35 + 44, = $114, which is way above the value of this dining experience."

  • "This place is so cute! From the staff to the delicious food - everything was spot on! There are so many choices to choose from on Belden Lane but I have to say, this is one of my favorites. The food was great, the service and the feeling you get when you leave this place. It's the perfect balance of a great dining experience! Just be aware the tables are so close you can hear everything your neighbor is saying."

  • "Always loved this place until now...what happened? Irregular service nice people but not up to job... Food has gone downhill ...just ok...the French bread and butter is still great! Hope things improve."

  • "I went to cafe bastille for brunch, with a friend (she recommended it). We had a reservation for 1pm and sat outside, they were pretty full outside. I ordered the eggs Benedict. The food came pretty quick. It looked good but my first bite wasn't great, the meat was rubbery & tasted funny but I was starving...went for the 2nd bite and then stopped because there was a HAIR in my food, yuck! Called the waiter and showed him and I asked for French Toast and he said ok. I RECEIVED ZERO APOLOGY. But whatever. Got the french toast which was decent but not amazing and I wasn't going to argue but they still charged me (for the french toast not the eggs benedict) which was also not great customer service."

  • "I choose this place for my boyfriend's birthday dinner because he loves French food. I've never been a big fan, but I've never had French food like this. I was anticipating small, fancy plated portions of some weird food, that was never intended to be eaten, served by a bored waiter, upset that I "didn't get it. Instead, we had a wonderful dinner of delicious food, served in a warm welcoming atmosphere. Our server was very helpful and graciously explained the menu. My french onion soup was delicious, and the beef dish was amazing. My boyfriend had the bone marrow and rabbit and loved every bite. It's a great, medium priced restaurant. We will be back."

  • "It's not a place I'd go if it weren't for a voucher. The French onion soup looked and tasted watered down. The cassoulet with duck confit was the tastiest dish among 3 courses. Dessert could have been skipped all together if it wasn't included - it was not house-made and was really bland! Redeeming qualities were the décor, which had a charming French café feel to it, and the service, which was courteous."

  • "The owner/waiter completely lacked customer service skills which we are used to in the U.S. I came in with an email with my Groupon coupon and he rudely said to me," I cannot read this book' in his French accent. My Groupon was a gift forwarded to me from a friend as a gift. It didn't print out with the bar code, but the 8 digit number was there. Suffice it to say, there was an argument between the owner and my dinner partner. It was not a good way to start an evening for dinner. We were about to leave when the owner had come back with my papers and confirmed the groupon was valid. Food was ok, but hard to enjoy after a lousy start. If the owner is losing money on the groupon, don't take it out on the customers!"

  • "I used to work near Belden Alley and this was one of my favorite restaurants when we went out to lunch. Hadn't been there for about 10 years and the crepe menu is limited now but they had my favorite--chicken and mushroom. Yum! I love the atmosphere and can imagine I am in a bistro in Paris. I notice they no longer have the chocolate mousse on the dessert menu and I hope they bring it back. It was merveilleuse!"

  • "We went for Sunday brunch. It was nice outside on the covered patio, but a bit noisy; so we opted for inside. We were early at noon, so had our choice of seats. We enjoyed warm bread & butter while we waited for our orders. I really enjoyed the bottomless mimosas (don't know what juice they used, but don't expect regular OJ!) And my beef brochettes were cooked extra rare as I had requested - a nice side salad, and slightly above average pomme frites - with a small bit of fruit on the plate - completed the meal. The service was attentive, but not overly so. With an out of date groupon (worth what I paid) it wasn't cheap - but about what you would expect of SF. With a groupon it's a great bargain,! I would definitely return."

  • "Fun little secret tucked away in an old San Francisco alley--Café Bastille! Al fresco dining with French-speaking wait staff is a nice distraction from the work day. Food is adequate--prices are pretty decent."

  • "The onion soup was fair then the rest of the meal went downhill. I could have made a better beef bourguignon at home. The dessert was disappointingly blah. The service however was excellent."

  • "Second time to the cafe. First time was for a special occasion and everything was excellent. This time took a group of seven and we sat outside under the heaters on a typical late February San Francisco evening. Again, everything was excellent. Would highly recommend."

  • "Food was very good, but service was fair at best. Waitress, came twice, once to take the order and then again to bring the bill. Otherwise, all service was provided by the bus staff. It was an unusual set-up and resulted in un-even service, not probably up to par with other places in a similar price range."

  • "The best service was by the busboy. We saw him more than we saw our waitress. The food was mediocre. Too much pesto on the escargot, ...covered the delicate flavors you would expect. Onion soup was shy of the characteristic cheese that makes it fun and delicious, but there was plenty of salt. Entrees were good, and the locals would do well to stop by, but it's hardly worth a trip there or the search for parking."

  • "Turns out that everyone in the restaurant that night was there on a Groupon. The host was not in a very nice mood. The food was mediocre ... except for one thing-- THE FRENCH FRIES ! They were great. Mussels were very tiny and had no taste. There was no beef in the Boeuf Bourguignon. Dessert was good. We were seated downstairs and it smelled like chemicals. Would not go back. Sorry."

  • "I was there recently for Valentine's day dinner and the experience was great. We had reservations at 8pm, arrived 10 minutes late but were seated immediately. It did take some time to get us water and bread so I knocked off one star for that glitch. However the food made up for the wait. I had the crab salad and it was delicious. My filet mignon steak was also really good. It tasted like butter in my mouth, it was so tender. The dessert was a chocolate cake and it was awesome...not too sweet. The Zinfindal wine that I had was also good. The interior decor reminded me of the European restaurants in Spain and Italy. I only wish the bread was served warm. However, the dinner was great and pricing is awesome."

  • "We celebrated Valentines Day a night early at Cafe Bastille. Felt like we were in France. Great Chicken Tagine! Had a bottle of French wine, that was the same one we had had our last night in Paris last year! Lovely, romantic evening. Very pleasant in every way. Sit outside if weather permits..."

  • "We have never gone to a French restaurant that we didn't like until now. I hate to write a bad review because it could have been our tastes but I ordered the duck and the duck itself was "okay" but the plate was filled with white beans. I didn't notice that when I ordered. In my opinion, it wasn't French. My husband ordered, I believe, the lamb. It came as a stew and was tasteless. There are so many wonderful restaurants in San Francisco, but this wasn't one of them. We feel we wasted our money because we couldn't even finish our meal."

  • "Cafe Bastille is neatly tucked away from the main street in what can only be described as a little Parisienne-like alley. The restaurant is romantic yet not too quiet for those looking for a hot spot for drinks or dinner. The food was excellent. Actually, we've been there several times before and each time the food has been great. The menu is moderately priced and worth every penny. Two steps off Bush Street and you are instantly transported to Montmartre."

  • "We've returned to this restaurant with a friend in order to have good food, good wine, and an environment where we can actually talk to one another. The weather was wet, so we sat in the lower level inside instead of on the patio. Everyone proclaimed their dinners to be good - not stellar, foodie-driven fluffy dishes, but well-prepared French dishes with good flavor. We had the filet special (huge piece of meat) and the chicken tagine (nicely spiced, very flavorful). A bottle of wine and some starter soups/salads rounded out a nice meal."

  • "I had never been before but decided to book a large group brunch here based on reviews. I was disappointed as it was not the French restaurant I had been sold on. It's in an allyway with no view and giant decals all over the walls. The food is not French or fit for foodies as listed. It was more equivalent to breakfast at First Watch. It's not horrible but I was looking for something a little higher end and great SF food and this just wasn't it. Also this place is only good for groups because not many people go here and we almost had the place to ourselves. Last, when you walk into a restaurant and it smells more like cleaning agents and dirty water than it smells like food that just makes eating there really unappealing."

  • "My friends and I quickly find a place online to eat around the area. Cafe Bastille looked great to us and we were happy with our choice. The French cuisine was outstanding. As we munched on warm bread and fresh butter, we enjoyed sitting outside under the heat lamps in the little alley amongst other tiny eateries. Our food then came out and we were surprised by the amount. We all had to take boxes home because they gave us so much. It was a great deal for how much they gave us. The rabbit, which is what I got, was moist and tender. A perfect way to have your first French dining experience."
