Good food and wine, friendly
staff, great service, and not terribly expensive!"

Went back to Bastille after many
years of being away from my beloved SF. Still an authentic French Bistro. The salmon special was truly outstanding. Steak Frites, Moules, etc. are first rate and affordable. A perfect place for a casual, lively, delicious evening."

Cafe Bastille is my go-to for
large groups. We always get a table together and everyone loves the food and beer list."
Dined on 6/25/2014
I took a group of colleagues for
lunch and everyone said their food was amazing...including best steak and hamburgers they'd ever eaten."
Dined on 6/20/2014
Fabulous food in a friendly and
fun environment. We will definitely be returning!!"
Dined on 6/14/2014
Restaurant was mostly-empty but we
were seated in a cramped corner just outside the kitchen, inches from a loud and obnoxious party. No other tables were available? Really? Food was, on balance, good but forgettable. Service was quite slow. We had to hunt down our server to ask for the bill."
Dined on 6/14/2014
My husband is French and we've
gone to our share of French restaurants. Big portions does not make up for mediocre food. Nothing notable. Seems more geared to groups and bar clientelle."
Dined on 5/9/2014
The waitress acted as though it
was an inconvenience for her to be at work. She complained about management nearly every time she came to our table. My meat was well done when med. rare was ordered, the dessert was semi-frozen (at least pull it the night before to thaw), and my dates take home remainder of food only contained the protein. The starch and veggies were discarded by the wait staff and when we inquired, the waitress blamed it on someone else even though she was the one who took the plate to box the remaining food. We asked to have the starch replenished (couscous w/ raisins and herbs?) and she said the kitchen was out and we were brought plain couscous as if it had been made at the last moment."

The main draw for me was getting
an outdoor table on Belden Place for that Parisian sidewalk dining experience. It's a fun atmosphere and the food was tasty, if a bit overpriced. I recommend the Boeuf Bourguignon -- was super rich and delicious. But, don't bother getting the whole prix fixe -- the desserts aren't worth it, and the French onion soup was just OK."
Dined on 6/6/2014
We were here for Dinner..first
time and will definitely be back! Everyone loved their food...fish with mash potatoes/asparagus was the favorite. Onion soup was not up to par. They serve wine by the 1/2 carafe and carafe which was welcome as we don't all drink. The man at the table next to us had the Floating Island dessert....Looked fabulous, I'm going back just for that. One of the ladies was their for lunch 3 days before and said her party was very pleased...crepes were excellent. Wine is fairly priced--a rarity in the city. Waitress was very competent and friendly. A great experience....we will return."

We were looking for a nice place
to have a quiet brunch. Someplace where we didn't have to wait in line for hours, listening to a panoply millenials and dot-come folks talk about how close they were to their options. Bastile was great. Food was very good, and the service very attentive. I had Smoked Salmon Benedict, which made me plenty happy, and my friend has Omelette Parisienne. All in all, a great way to spend a Sunday morning. "

We enjoyed our meal at Cafe
Bastille very much. Service was excellent, and the chef had no problem making substitutions/changes. I had the steak frites which was delicious, well prepared, and my wife had the sole, which she said was fantastic. She has problems with too much oil, and they were able to prepare the food to her specifications. Prices were very reasonable, and the decor is pretty cool, definitely has a bistro/cafe vibe. Also, they are one of the first restaurants to accept the new Opentable App payments, which is a cool service."
Dined on 6/3/2014
this is by far the worst
restaurant ever, the staff were rude, never around when you need them, roll their eyes when you ask them questions, at the end we had to ask the check twice in order to get it. There was a 25 minutes break between appetizer and entree, and there were not that many people in the restaurant, makes you wonder what the kitchen staff were doing??? worst dining experience ever!! deserves 0 star"
Dined on 5/24/2014
I like how this place always
change its menu so we got something different to try every time. Food was good but somehow I feel like the food served in the past was better. I tried roasted bone marrow this time, too fatty for me. It's an experience for me but will not order again. Food portion is large and will definitely fill us up. I also ordered moule (mussel) this time and the bowl is probably as big as my head. It's yummy but too bad my friend doesn't like its seafood taste. Keep it up and hope to try something different next time."
Dined on 5/29/2014
I brought someone here for their
first time and was disappointed to see that all of my favorites were dropped when Cafe Bastille remade the menu. No Spicy Merguez Sandwich, no Grilled Chicken Salad, no Roasted Vegetable Sandwich."
Dined on 5/28/2014
Made reservations on short notice
for a business lunch. Turned out to be a fantastic little place. Happened to be a very hot day, so we eschewed the hopping out-door, shaded seating area for the cooler interior. The interior is decorated with belle époque posters, etc. The table service was very good, as was the food. It is not quite trendy. It is that rare place that seems properly made for a sunny day in San Francisco. The same alley has about half a dozen other restaurants in a similar style, although this seems to be the best."
Dined on 5/1/2014
Great food, prepared excellently.
Good, reasonably priced wine list. Could talk with and hear dining mates."
Dined on 5/23/2014
Not quite Paris, but this place
makes it feel close! We went for Mother's Day, and needless to say, my mom was more than pleased."
Dined on 5/11/2014
Overall, the restaurant is quaint
and reminded me of Paris. The food is hit or miss. The beat and endive salad were good as well as the salmon tartare. The escargot was so salty that it wasn't even edible! The waitress was so kind enough to remove it from the bill. The floating island was also way too sweet. I think if they fix these things, the restaurant could be really good. The service was nice and ambiance was great."
Dined on 5/10/2014
First thing, dirty silverware.
Food was not good. I ordered quiche thinking that a French restaurant would make a very good quiche and salad. It was thin and greasy. The fries were cooked again to heat them up and were inedible. The bread was good."
Dined on 5/8/2014
It's a nice spot for Mussels &
Fries (fabulous)... classic dish that is always a winner."
Dined on 5/6/2014
This "deal" is a scam - buyer
beware. Although they charge 39 for dinner - they calculate the tax on the price had there not been a deal, add 18% gratuity for 2 people, 4% tax for workers without health insurance, tax and then charge high prices for avg wine. For dinner with 2 drinks each - I paid $150 - never going there again"
Dined on 5/2/2014
Location makes it a convenient
place for Financial District folks. As such, it's an OK place. But for tourists and foodies type, the place is not good enough to be sought out and make a special trip. Food: the escargot with the right amount of fresh garlic and herbs in the butter. The French Onion Soup which was flavorful but too watery to have great texture. The Cassolet in contrast had all the right ingredients but ironically not enough spices to layer the beans and ducks. The chicken Tagine that was the most disappointing for being oddly sweet and has an overly sugary tomato base. The chocolate mousse cake and a raspberry cake tasted store bought. All said, everything about this restaurant was average though I'd hoped for more. "
Dined on 5/1/2014
The restaurant had very good food.
Came in here with a party of 6 and everyone loved their meal. The service was very attentive and constantly made sure we were satisfied. The place is a nice little gem. I would chose the outdoor patio if possible"
Dined on 4/17/2014
Our meal at Cafe Bastille was
wonderful. We had the prix fixe meal with moules - shared the delicious onion soup and dessert. The truite grenobloise was delicious, too. I will return to Cafe Bastille when I am in SF. Service was great (once we got past the maitre d' who was more interested in her friends than the customers)."
Dined on 4/23/2014
It was a beautiful day to be
sitting outside. The atmosphere was very relaxed, the food delicious and the wait staff very accommodating."
Dined on 4/20/2014
We had to repeat several of times
in order to get our French fries refill and getting our check. Other than that, everything else was good."
Dined on 4/19/2014
My wife and I celebrated our
anniversary at cafe Bastille. We went to their Sunday brunch. There were very few people in the restaurant and cafe Bastille was the only restaurant on belden lane that was open. We wanted some quiet time so this was perfect. No wait, the food was good, and the price reasonable. We will go back if we want a quiet Sunday brunch. "
Dined on 4/13/2014
The food came from heaven and was
served to me by an angel. This is my go to place."
Dined on 4/12/2014
I brought my boyfriend here to
celebrate his college acceptance and the food and service were great. However, the waiter kept upselling and told us it was just a dollar more on a bunch of items to substitute than our voucher but it was not. I ended up spending $64 (with no drinks or alcohol) plus the $39 group which was much more than I had budgeted as a high school student. Be very wary of the upsell here, it gets expensive fast!"
Dined on 4/5/2014
I really was pleased with my
experience at Cafe Bastille. I had reasonable expectations leading up to dinner and I can safely attest that Cafe Bastille surpassed what I was looking forward to. Tucked away on a little side street that belies the beauty and ambience of the restaurant. The staff is very friendly and professional. The menu options were highlights of some the best of French cuisine. The prices are fairly reasonable. All in all, you cannot go wrong with a nice warm evening dinner at Cafe Bastille."
Dined on 4/5/2014
I wasn't sure what to expect - my
last 3 "French" restaurants have all had different food! Most items here were casserole or stew-like. Very tasty. Mesclune salad & onion soup were good. We had the Boeuf Bourguignon and the Chicken dish. Both were very good. For dessert, the Chocolate Creme Brulee was OK, but the Raspberry Key Lime was tasteless. Really too bad. Not inexpensive. Even the Prix-fixe meal is $35, I think. We had a $39 Travelzoo voucher for the meals, but our check, which had 2 coffees and one mixed drink, tax and mandatory 18% tip, came to an additional $44, so $83 total. Not bad, but without the voucher it would have been $35 + $35 + 44, = $114, which is way above the value of this dining experience."
Dined on 4/4/2014
This place is so cute! From the
staff to the delicious food - everything was spot on! There are so many choices to choose from on Belden Lane but I have to say, this is one of my favorites. The food was great, the service and the feeling you get when you leave this place. It's the perfect balance of a great dining experience! Just be aware the tables are so close you can hear everything your neighbor is saying."
Dined on 3/18/2014
It was fantastic. The owner is a
nice gentleman. Nice spot to hang out . Nice food. Thank you"
Dined on 3/14/2014
The French inspired cuisine is
excellent! Your waitstaff were professional & attentive but not intrusive. Just right. I'm guessing dinner must be a nice experience as well."
Dined on 3/11/2014
Always loved this place until
now...what happened? Irregular service nice people but not up to job... Food has gone downhill ...just ok...the French bread and butter is still great! Hope things improve."
Dined on 3/9/2014
I went to cafe bastille for
brunch, with a friend (she recommended it). We had a reservation for 1pm and sat outside, they were pretty full outside. I ordered the eggs Benedict. The food came pretty quick. It looked good but my first bite wasn't great, the meat was rubbery & tasted funny but I was starving...went for the 2nd bite and then stopped because there was a HAIR in my food, yuck! Called the waiter and showed him and I asked for French Toast and he said ok. I RECEIVED ZERO APOLOGY. But whatever. Got the french toast which was decent but not amazing and I wasn't going to argue but they still charged me (for the french toast not the eggs benedict) which was also not great customer service."
Dined on 3/8/2014
I choose this place for my
boyfriend's birthday dinner because he loves French food. I've never been a big fan, but I've never had French food like this. I was anticipating small, fancy plated portions of some weird food, that was never intended to be eaten, served by a bored waiter, upset that I "didn't get it. Instead, we had a wonderful dinner of delicious food, served in a warm welcoming atmosphere. Our server was very helpful and graciously explained the menu. My french onion soup was delicious, and the beef dish was amazing. My boyfriend had the bone marrow and rabbit and loved every bite. It's a great, medium priced restaurant. We will be back."
Dined on 3/8/2014
It's not a place I'd go if it
weren't for a voucher. The French onion soup looked and tasted watered down. The cassoulet with duck confit was the tastiest dish among 3 courses. Dessert could have been skipped all together if it wasn't included - it was not house-made and was really bland! Redeeming qualities were the décor, which had a charming French café feel to it, and the service, which was courteous."
Dined on 2/12/2014
The owner/waiter completely lacked
customer service skills which we are used to in the U.S. I came in with an email with my Groupon coupon and he rudely said to me," I cannot read this book' in his French accent. My Groupon was a gift forwarded to me from a friend as a gift. It didn't print out with the bar code, but the 8 digit number was there. Suffice it to say, there was an argument between the owner and my dinner partner. It was not a good way to start an evening for dinner. We were about to leave when the owner had come back with my papers and confirmed the groupon was valid. Food was ok, but hard to enjoy after a lousy start. If the owner is losing money on the groupon, don't take it out on the customers!"
