Diner Reviews
  • "Our first time at Blu and a very nice experience. Our server was helpful and attentive, presentation very nice, and food well prepared. Their calamari is some of the best I have eaten, so tender and the sauce is perfect. We will be back."

  • "Blu Seafood and Bar is an excellent place to dine for any occasion. It was my first time dining there and it did not disappoint. The food was outstanding, as well as the service. The waitress was extremely helpful with recommendations. I highly recommend this restaurant. "

  • "The meal was excellent but our wait time for our food to arrive was extremely long. The waiter Adrian was extremely kind in regards to giving us dessert to make up for the extremely long wait. Other tables who were seated after us received their meals and were almost done with their dinner before our meals arrived. The wait time from this experience would cause me to think twice in regards to taking my love to this place again. The meal was amazing once it finally arrived."

  • "This was my first visit to Blu. I had the shrimp & grits and they were outstanding. My wife had a Mahi special and it was excellent as well. Presentation, taste, and temperature were all excellent. The reataurant isn't very attractive from the exterior. The interior is only moderately better. For this price point you might expect something a bit nicer. But the food makes it worthy the return trip soon."

  • "I didn't understand why food took so long, and why we had to try so hard to get a second drink, as the restaurant wasn't full and they even had a server in training. We ordered raw oysters after a discussion about the types, and the servers forgot about our order. We had to ask where they were, then restate the order. The food was terrific but I hesitate recommending this to someone else in case they get stuck just sitting at the table for long stretches."

  • "Some people like long dinners. I do to but not all the time. Blu had great food, good service but boy were they slow! It took us 2 hours for our meal in a group of three. I think the kitchen couldn't keep up with all the orders. I would go back despite the slow service."

  • "We go to this restaurant routinely and it is always delicious. Great bar drinks. The crab Mac and cheese is a must try. The diver scallops and shrimp were succulent!"

  • "Not spectacular, but can be counted on for always having fresh and tasty seafood."

  • "The food was absolutely fantastic. I can't wait to return. The wine list was extensive, delicious and reasonable. There's nothing about Blu that would stop me from recommending this to friends, colleagues or family."

  • "I took my husband on a Birthday Weekend and BLU Seafood definately one of the highlights. The food was excellant as was the service. We will be backnext time we are in Durham!"

  • "This was our first visit to Blu Seafood and it was a delightful find in Durham. The food was nothing short of great, well prepared, fresh and tasty. Mountain trout in browned butter. My dinner guest had some special requirements which were met with a smile. The wait staff was attentive but not overly so. The ambiance was perfect for a great meal and conversation. Key Lime Pie was a marvelous way to end the meal. We'll be back for sure."

  • "After a year we made a revisit last weekend. The exterior has non-descript appearance. Upon entering one is met by a pleasant hostess and the room had few tables and an active bar. area.. We were led to an adjacent room with very cramped diming tables and very poor lighting,. Our food quality varied with a 1-2 * for the unboned sea bass which was very dry , almost tasteless and served without a sauce.Other foods were: clam chowder 5*, MacCrab app 3-4*, trout 3-*, Caesar salad 3-4* Shrimp App 3*. The wine selection was fairly good but the cost per glass was markedly over priced. I plan to return and suggest the restaurant to my friends; with suggestion to bring their flash light."

  • "Based on friend's reviews, we were eager to dine at Blu. The ambiance in the back room where we were seated was marginal: concrete floor, high ceilings with sound-muting panels, tables bare of flowers/lights. Our waiter was very polished and knowledge and attentive at the beginning. About the time our entrees arrived a table of nine was seated at the other end of the room. Keep in mind the room was already moderately loud with conversation. The table of 9 was very loud and didn't seem to notice or care about anyone else. Having only one waiter in this space of 6 tables, service went from attentive to absent. My entree was over cooked but the waiter didn't ask until we had finished eating. Would not deliberately eat here again."

  • "We enjoyed our meal at Blu, and the fish was fresh and well prepared. Salads however were very ordinary and bland. We were happy with the wine selection and enjoyed the whites we ordered. We had a good experience however the quality was not at a level we have come to expect at the best restaurants we find when we dine in Durham."

  • "Snagged some super early bird reservations here before a comedy show for myself, my husband and another couple. Food was nothing short of AMAZING - appetizers, main courses and deserts all fantastic. We had three types of oysters (all delish) and calamari to start, diver scallops and shrimp, a cod topped with mango salsa, and salmon with a sweet buttery sauce. Everyone's plates were scraped clean. The virgin Bloody Mary was pretty watery, have definitely had better from a premix bottle but that is the only complaint."

  • "We went here by accident. I asked my boyfriend to find a restaurant near our hotel, he is not familiar with open table, thought he was searching locally and we ended up a half hour away. It was worth the mistake. The place was crowded with disappointed customers showing up with no reservations being turned away. My boyfriend had the tuna tartare. I had the crab Mac n cheese for starters. Filling already, but I powered on to the sirloin with blue cheese and mashed potatoes. It was delicious. My boyfriend had the Mahi Mahi special. Delicious. I was disappointed they did not have puckers for my appletini, but enjoyed a blend of white wines that was surprisingly good, light and refreshing so I had two!"

  • "The restaurant has enclosed more space and has done a great job in expanding the dining area. The food is still great, Mediterranean sea bass did not disappoint and the deserts were a delightful close to a good blend of flavors."

  • "This is the fourth time we've been at Blu's. We would come here more often but we live in Wake Forest (about 35 min away). If they were open on Sundays we would be here more often. We have a Sunday theatre package with DPAC which is on Sunday evenings. If we are at DPAC on another night, or in this case Saturday afternoon, we would be here most every time. The food and service has always been great."

  • "Blu is consistently fabulous. Our go-to spot for a great meal."
    Dined on 3/12/2014
  • "We chose the restaurant based on reviews and it's proximity to DPAC. Because we were headed to a show, we ate earlier than is typical. By the time we left at 7pm the restaurant had filled. Our server was excellent, especially with pacing our meal. We enjoyed oysters rocker feller and mussels. Both were incredible. The salmon which was fabulous. The plates were put together very nicely both in terms of presentation and taste. Only downside was seating. We were in a small table for two in the bar area. Not a problem because of the early hour, but on a busier night I imagine it would have affected our ability to talk. The other room would have been better, but again this didn't affect our evening. We'll definitely return. Great spot!"

  • "Our waitress was personable and attentive, but that was about the best that could be said for our visit to Blu. The food was disappointing and the prices were way over the top. Our flounder and loup de mer were both overcooked, and the brown butter sauce on the flounder was burnt. The key lime desserts were only only so-so. We won't be back."

  • "$150 for dinner for two, nothing special, just more expensive compared to comparable restaurants in the area"

  • "There were five of us and we totally enjoyed our meal. the trout was yummy, their special mahi mani was divine according to two of our group and the scallops and shrimp got a high rating as well. Glasses of wine were a bit skimpy however, the food was wonderful and we will be back."

  • "We enjoyed our pre-DPAC dinner at Blu Seafood -- definitely recommend the specials for the freshest seafood. Tuna tartare appetizer was good, not great, and chocolate dessert was a little lacking. But the service was conscientious without being overbearing & there were enough interesting items on the menu that we'll be going back. And if you're an oyster lover -- you'll find oysters prepared many ways -- stop in on Monday or Tuesday for the freshest oyster selection."

  • "We delayed our Valentine dinner until the next night but it was still very busy. Blu reservation was ready and table was nice, Adrian, our server, was helpful and let us try wines. Food was excellent and service was attentive but not too much. Recommended."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "It was cramped and noisy. Both entrees, Mahi-Mahi, Scallops and Shrimp, were delicious. The overpriced part was the appetizer at $4 per oyster, oysters you could not even taste the were so small...yes, I know that smaller oysters generally have more taste, but I could have sipped oyster juice and gotten the same taste. Blu will not likely become a regular for us. Service was efficient, although our waitress seemed distracted."

  • "Went to Blu prior to a DPAC show. Was a busy weekend as it was the day after Valentine's day (a saturday night) so the place was pretty busy. The noice was a bit high but it could have been our seats which were close to the kitchen. The waiter knew we were going to DPAC for a show and service was prompt util after our appetizer was finished - the kitchen must have been slammed as it took a while to get our main meal and then the follow up service to get a quick desert and the billl took too long (by this time, many people had left for the show). As usual, the food was great and the price reasonable. I will be there again and figuure the saturday after valentines was just too busy for them."

  • "We had one appetizer, two salads and two entrees including seafood and a steak. Everything was great!"

  • "The quality of the prix fixe dinner for Valentine's Day was outstanding for all courses. The service was extraordinarily slow. The two of us arrived promptly for our 6:30 p.m.reservation, waited a very long time to receive our the first course, an even longer time to receive the main, second course, and a fairly long time to receive the desert. We asked the server about the slowness re our courses and were informed that the kitchen was doing the best it could. Our charge receipt was run at 8:48 p.m. just after we had finished deserts. Other diners appeared to have reeived much more normal service, raising the possibility that those tables may have booked for later diners, whereas our table had not been booked for a later reservation."

  • "Wonderful food. Active ambience. Very busy which made service just a tad slow but it was Valentine's Day so much busier than usual.I would definitely recommend!"

  • "As always our food was exceptional, but the noise level made it impossible to have any conversation."

  • "My son and I went there prior to a Duke basketball game; the oysters were on special (Mon and Tues) and were very fresh anc excellent. We both chose the Carolina trout which was simply prepared but outstanding. Access from there to parking for the game was easy too - we would definitely go back again. Only minor note is that there isn't a lot of parking right at the restaurant but there is a lot just to the west of the restaurant that is unrestricted after 5pm M-F."

  • "The food was full of flavor! Our party of four all ate off of each other's plates just so we can try everything (the salmon 'won'). The glaze on the salmon had layers of flavor. The steak had this lovely bleu cheese butter which made it extra juicy and delicious. We shared a crab mac & cheese appetizer... it is a large rich portion and must be shared... giant chunks of crab meat in a lovely creamy/buttery sauce... heaven on earth. Highly recommend this wonderful place. I've passed by this restaurant for several years and have not gone in. Will definitely return. Very busy place, which should tell you something."

  • "The atmosphere is lacking and it tends to be chilly. We go out of our way to go here for the food and drink and will continue to do so. Their specialty dinners are terrific and worth waiting for. The decor would be great if there were situated on a dock overlooking the water, but they are off Ninth Street in Durham. As imaginative as the menu is, I think the staff could come up with something great."

  • "Visited Blu during Restaurant Week and couple of years ago and have returned multiple times. Always excellent! The catch of the day Saturday was superb. It is a 45 mile round trip for us, but we will be back. Blu Seafood is well worth a trip from anywhere in the greater Triangle area."

  • "As always, the fish at Blu Seafood was fresh and expertly prepared -- neither overcooked nor underdone -- in a creative recipe. Their fried oysters are the best ever, and my wife and I are even thinking about sampling some of their large and changing selection of fresh oysters."
