Diner Reviews
  • "The food was to die for. Everything, down to the pasta, is made in house and fresh that day.. I can vouch for the beef ravioli, carbonara, and raspberry cheesecake.. Still drooling thinking about it. I'm definitely a foodie and restaurant "snob" and this place is top notch. Service was spectacular as well!"

  • "The place is nice and the food is pretty good but not quite the value for your dollar."

  • "Hostess had no idea what a corking fee was when I called to ask, a male said "not allowed", as they had a wine list which should fill anyone's need. Ouch. Really? Hostess also could not advise re rescheduling or keeping existing reservation if running 15 minutes late. Hardly a uncommon question. 3 in the party got beef or chicken ravioli, which they said was excellent. My lamb was very mediocre, not terrible, but not noteworthy and another's Ribollita, a vegetable and bean dish, was oddly uneven, with some vegetables undercooked and hard, others well cooked. Quite pricey for unexceptional fare. Will likely not go again."

  • "The food is excellent - let that be said. However, the ambience and the setting... just didn't feel... close or romantic or even charming. It felt carved out of an industrial space, and sitting right next to the restrooms and the kitchen on full display... no charm at all. Throw in some nuisance flies, and well... it could have been much better."

  • "A special occasion restaurant for us, we hadn't been in a couple of years as we'd tired of the menu. Decided to give of a try after learning of the new ownership and chef. Went Despite the review in this RTD. Glad we did. Food was wonderful, service very attentive, but not obtrusive. We normally like to sit at the bar and have a cocktail while waiting for a table. Bartender was great, but bar itself not welcoming, no ambience. 1 major distraction was the smell. The restaurant was almost cloudy with cooking smoke. While I have nothing against the smell of cooking meat, the abundance of cooking odors took away from the overall ambience of the restaurant. Hopefully they will install better air cleaning/venting in time for their new launch."

  • "We had been to Bistro 27 once before about a year or so ago. Decided to try it again, despite a recent review in the Richmond Times-Dispatch. It was a terrific experience all around. The service was terrific, the owner personally attended to us during the evening. Our server was professional, timely (didn't wait too long or not long enough between check in's) and the food was well prepared and delicious. There's nothing pretentious about the menu - it abounds with interesting presentations of very recognizable choices....we'll be back."

  • "We absolutely loved the menu choices- chicken, fish, pork, beef, and vegetarian options. Everything was delicious and was served in a timely manner."

  • "The food was good, the service good but we got cheated. We had a $75 gift certificate from Linden Row Inn. Our brunch came to $30 and the waiter brought us a wine list so we could select a bottle of wine to take with us to take up some of the balance. We selected a nice Malbec which when the waiter went to get it, they were "Out" of it. He offered another Malbec which he said was their house favorite so we accepted. Now our bill came to $83 which meant the wine was over $50. We checked on this wine online and the most expensive was $10. Totally disgusted with their dishonesty and would never eat there again plus I am sending this complaint to Linden Row Inn as well."

  • "The charchuterie was fair with the duck procuitto being abit tough and the choice of ricotta cheese not a usual choice. The entrees were both off the hook. The filet was charred and tender and cooked to the correct temp, the duck breast was one of the most tender I have ever enjoyed. Dessert on the other hand was lacking in flavor. Matching a barola with the two entrees went very well. Overall good............."

  • "The service was outstanding and the food divine. The dining experience was fit for foodies. Ordered the beef tenderloin in a dark truffle demi-glaze paired with broccolini and fingerling potatoes. It arrived at the table perfectly cooked. I have been to dine here several times and each has been a excellent dining experience. I would highly recommend Bistro 27"

  • "while the food was good the server was emotionless and gave appearance of being overworked. he was not enthusiastic about telling of the specials. in fact, i had to ask for the specials after i overheard him telling the other diners about them. i liked the dining room with the big windows looking out onto the street."

  • "Have historically enjoyed Bistro 27 and have always supported the restaurant because they give a discount to theatre patrons. I had never tried duck breast before and will not be ordering it again. Was fatty and had some gristle. My two daughters got the two fish dishes on the menu which they said were OK. My husband got the pork chop special which he really liked."

  • "I read many of the reviews and agree on a few things. The rolls are very lackluster as was the olive oil that came with them. We had two rolls for two people which was a little skimpy too but they weren't very good anyway. Max's on Broad, which is literally across the street, took the time to find really great bread (from a bakery in DC). The other complaint was that they were out of things at 6:30 on a Friday- crab for the crab salad and mussels and the waiter didn't know until we ordered. The tuna salad I had instead was really really good as was the steak special. Both were outstanding. The dessert (bread pudding) was average and didn't taste like almond as it should have. Otherwise, service was fine, water glasses filled often. "

  • "The food was good, once we got it. There was a limited menu since it was Mother's Day. Once we sat down, we waited for at least 15 minutes to get bread, and we found out that 2 of the appetizers were no longer available, all that was left was salads. We found out that the Prime Rib was also out, which really limited our selection. But we were in luck, they had Beef Tenderloin! (they did not tell us it was more expensive than the Prime Rib by $4). When we asked the waiter what came with the Beef Tenderloin ($30), he said some starch and some vegetable. And we got a bottle of white wine which just sat on the table, it was not put in ice. We saw another table where there wine was put in an ice bucket."

  • "We had Mother's Day Brunch. For the first time since we've been dining here we felt quite rushed. Waiter kept trying to take plates away when we were still eating from them. Entrée came out before we had finished our first course. He never asked if we wanted a second beverage and we had to ask for water refills."

  • "The food we had was very good, but when we made the reservation, we weren't told it was going to be a limited menu that evening, so all the cool stuff on the normal menu was not available. We'll probably try again another time."

  • "We selected Bistro 27 based on it's website showing an extensive menu, good recent reviews and attractive pics of the interior. However our dining experience on the evening of 5/10 was beyond disappointing. The menu was very limited (we were told because of the graduation!). Our waiter forgot to order one dish (sword fish) for our party of 6, getting everybody else to eat cold food, the food was unremarkable (chicken salmon, ravioli). We had to ask for assistance from various staff members as our server seemed very oblivious to us. Bread, usually the indicator of restaurant quality, came in a form of most boring rolls. The desert (we asked for 2 orders of tiramissu) which were served 10 minutes apart, without any apology. "

  • "1-the menu was changed to a prix fixe menu--we were notified after noon on the Friday of our reservation; not enough time to get a new reservation. there was no information on line with this 2-we waited 10 minutes for water to be served, then when it was the basics of service weren't followed-my 82 year old mother was last in a mixed gender table 3-The fish and steak were good but the vegetarian portion was extremely small, particularly given the price charged 4-there were several large tables but at the time we were dining the restaurant was only half full, yet we waiting quite a while for initial service (see above), our assigned waiter to take drink orders and then for drinks to be served. he never acknowledged our wait "

  • "We like to visit Bistro 27 because the food is good, there's a good selection of wine and it's across the street from the theater. We've had good experiences there and will definitely go back."

  • "We chose to eat here at the spur of the moment and throughly enjoyed our dinner. Salads to start were excellent, as were our entrees (ravioli special and scallops) and desserts (bread pudding). My only complaint is that they were out of both the first entree and the first dessert that I ordered. "

  • "food has always been delicious, staff has been informed and curtious. high on our list of special places to eat for special occassions."

  • "I really feel like brunch menus should offer a nice selection of breakfast & lunch options but this place did not. This was my second visit to this restaurant and I just don't think I'll have a third. On the first visit I had to deal with rude wait staff and on this last visit my frittata was over cooked. The hashbrowns I ordered were actually chunks of potatoes (not shredded) and they didn't taste very good. The adult drinks are way over priced in my opinion. Every once in a while we come across nice little diamond in the ruff restaurants downtown, but I don't consider this to be one. "

  • "This place is still great even though there have been changes in ownership and chef. The food was very good, but the rolls were like eating White House rolls-just doesn't work with the menu. Service was excellent. Good ambiance with moderate noise level. I hope people will continue to go there, even though there is so much competition in the area. "

  • "we had dinner here before seeing a show in richmond and the staff was lovely. the space is unique with a hip vibe and huge windows that make the room feel very light filled. our server was a little new or undertrained, but sweet. our appetizers and desserts were wonderful. however, my entree was not good. i had the arctic char, which was on the dry side and very salty. the risotto that came with it was undercooked. i was very surprised because the crab salad was amazing! to their credit they just changed the menu and are debuting several new dishes and this was one of them. my husband enjoyed his dish. they were very accommodating, took the dinner back with apologies and took it off of our check. "

  • "Every time we dine, it is always a great experience. The food is consistantly delicious and the service is always the best. When we are in a bit of a hurry because of curtain time at the Theatre across the street, they make sure we are out on time. The sound level is a little high, but it is a Bistro after all. The owner is around and about to make sure all goes well."

  • "We've never been disappointed with our meals or experiences at Bistro 27. The changing menus always reflect the best of the season and take advantage of so many local producers and growers. Service is always right on point. The servers are very knowledgeable and attentive without being pushy. Don, in particular, is excellent. "

  • "We came in for the first time a year ago and Don was our server. The last time we saw him at Bistro 27 was his last week there. We have been back multiple times but it was a nice surprise to see him back. We come in every few months and the service and food is always great although Don is our favorite. My mother in law was so surprised that Don remembered her from over a year ago and even what table we sat at. We also love the owner William he is always so nice to us when we come in. The menu has changed and has some awesome new additions. I had the wild boar gnocchi I was really tasty. We have made it tradition to celebrate me and my sister in laws birthday every year here. It's nice to see familiar faces that always make you feel welcome."

  • "Bistro 27 was a nice find! We bought a Groupon and it was well worth the price. The experience made us feel special...service excellent...food was just as good! I would have liked a few more red wine choices but they let us taste two...our bottle was good. Parking was easy...valet would be nice."

  • "The restaurant is light filled and very comfortable. The service was great letting us sit and have drinks while we waited for our guests for quite awhile. We went for brunch. They had a small buffet with salads, vegetables.fruit and pastries. The main courses were selected from the menu and there was a good variety and the portions were big. Everything was delicious. "

  • "The food was wonderful. However, we felt very rushed. It was Easter Sunday and we felt they were trying to get in as many as possible. We will go back other than a holiday."

  • "The service was very poor, the waiter kept rushing us to order which was baffling because I have never experienced that before. He was unpleasant and rude to say the least. The food was so bad that we were not even able to finish it. We were a party of 3. The duck breast was under cooked it gave a stomach pain. It came with a sticky boiled rice which did not taste good. The clams and mussels came in a bowl already mixed with a tomato based sauce, spinach and some boiled vegetables. all of which did not compliment each other. The stuffed quail was the best among the lot, however the quail and the stuffing was dry and hard to eat without sipping on water. I do not recommend this place, I am surprised it had good ratings. "

  • "I don't know why this restaurant isn't at the top of everyone's list in Richmond. It is far better than most restaurants, with an inventive menu that includes items not often found locally. Not the usual fare."

  • "The food at B27 tastes fantastic! The Chicken Cordon Bleu is wonderfully balanced and presented exquisitely. The Duck is also presented tastefully (pun intended), but I was a *little* disappointed in the poor fat pad trimming on some pieces. Most of the slices had the classic trim of wonderfully gamey fat pad which adds so nicely to the flavor of duck. But a couple slices were 90% fat of almost an inch in thickness. This caliber of establishment shouldn't put that on a plate. That aside, the glaze was perfectly balanced - slightly sweet, slightly rich but not to the exclusion of the delicate flavors of the meat. The Tiramisu was one of the best I've ever had."

  • "Frankly, we were disappointed in Bistro Twenty-Seven. The service was all right, but that was about it. The dinner rolls were dense, tasteless and hard which suggested they came out of a bag. The beet tartare salad was fine; the highlight of the table fare unfortunately. One entrée special of Cobia was grossly overcooked and the flounder entree was breaded to oblivion. The two desserts were uninspiring. Frankly, we got the feeling that there were a bunch of amateurs in the Kitchen. The wine was good, then again, Bistro 27 did not make it. Should have gone to Tarrants down the block which is always reliable."

  • "We had a good meal at this resteraunt. However, we were one of 5 tables served on a Friday night at prime dinner time (7:00). I was very surprised because the place has great atmosphere and the food was good. Restaurant across the street was packed. We were here from 7 to 9 pm and during that time 10 people (5 tables) were served. Kind of puts a damper on the atmosphere."

  • "I have been coming here for years. While I live out of town, I come for an annual conference in Richmond and always make sure to have lunch at the bistro. The food is both affordable and delicious. And the staff is almost like family to me now. I highly recommend this place."
