Diner Reviews
  • "Good was good, portions were right, presentation was good for the most part (didn't enjoy eating salad out of a jar). Despite having a reservation for 4 we were placed in the front of the restaurant in a separate area in what felt like an overflow part of the room. It was an uninspiring dining experience as a result and you felt closed in. The soups were pretty good, the chicken dish was also good, the NY steak was done nicely but the meat quality was average. Overall good, but for the cost at the end of the evening the experience ended up being average because of poor seating arrangement."

  • "Overall a good experience, very noisy but the quality of the food made up for the nose level. The service was good, although our waitress did nothing more than deliver the food & wine. Very little interaction from her."

  • "Had a wonderful dinner with a girlfriend - ambience, lovely food, very fresh and excellent ingredients, wonderful view and a place that you can linger. Thoroughly enjoyed the night and food."

  • "Yes, OK is a fair comment I think. I pause as I think the main place, Rouge in Inglewood, is truly great so worry my expectations are unfair on a bistro by the same people? I think I have taken that into account especially given the hefty pricing--for a bistro in the 'burbs. The "lobster soup" did not taste of lobster at all. The "pork paillard" was OK I guess. It seemed odd to have a very French menu--sort of--with a room full of photos of Paris with such North American ingredients. Yes, it is just OK really with long waits between courses."

  • "We went to this restaurant to celebrate our wedding anniversary. When we got there we were advised that there was a private function occupying the prime seating area of the restaurant which has views to the outside. We were seated in an interior area which was a bit like a cave and exposed to the kitchen which was noisy. The staff was clearly focused on the private function, which took away from our enjoyment of the event. Food was OK, but pricey (example: the burger was $17.00, but for an additional $6 you could have fries on the side.)"

  • "My wife and I visited this restaurant to celebrate our 16th wedding anniversary after several friends had recommended it. The menu looked good and the ambiance was nice. I was disappointed to find my medium-rare steak to be cooked medium(almost medium well) and it seemed that other guests beside us were having similar issues. I'm not sure if they were having an off night, but its disappointing that it was on the night we were trying out for the first time."

  • "Food ok... Lots of salt. Server forgot an appetizer. Otherwise service ok. Really wanted to like it but....."

  • "Food was great but portions were quite small, definitely not enough for a guy's appetite. Nice food combinations, nice appetizers and variety in choice of entrees. Our choice of wine was not available and I feel that unavailibilty of wines should be communicated when handing customers the wine list. Our server was paying far more attention to two other tables than to us, it took a long time before he returned to take our orders. It did spoil the atmosphere to some extent, fortunately we were with very good friends who more than made up for the server."

  • "The food was amazing! Chef was so personable and willing to discuss the food and accommodate several allergies/preferences"

  • "The food tasted great! To be fair it was a busy Father's Day so we were located in a less desirable part of the restaurant near the front door in an area that felt more like a hallway. It was fifteen minutes before we were served water and our food order was taken 35 minutes after we entered. The waitress was pleasant although not really familiar with the wine list. $36 per steak was the fare."

  • "I believe the restaurant could do better if it had enough service staff on or used trained staff. This is the second time I have been seated on the bar side and the service has been sub-par. It is about expectations. When you are charged premium dollars for your food, your expectations on service are higher. This restaurant is charging too much for the food and service. Trying to be high-end but failing on the service side."

  • "Four of us were not pleased with our meals. The food did not taste good, some was undercooked, and there was inconsistencies in the same dishes we ordered. Eg., caesar salads...one came with tomatoes, one did not. (Strangely on both caesar salads we found chunks of fat). Eg., ginger beef salad---the ginger beef on one salad was cooked like "traditional ginger beef", and on the other salad the meat had no sauce on it, it was cooked medium rare, and it was colourless....looked more like "beef balls." Also, one ginger beef salad had shredded carrot on it, the other one did not. The restaurant had been recommended to us, but it fell far short of our expectations. We were all very disappointed, and we will not be returning."

  • "We had a group of 5 people for Father's Day Brunch. We would not go back at all. Both dad's in our party had to send their meal back to the kitchen and lost their appetite for anything else. They both ordered the Fried Chicken with Cheddar Biscuits. Their fried chicken was burnt black on the outside and still pink/red on the inside. All of our meals were luke warm and very bland tasting. Bistro Rouge only deducted both the dad’s main dish, but not their appetizers, which they should have. Very disappointing especially that a renowned chef was in the kitchen that day."

  • "Excited to be returning to this restaurant for Father's Day brunch as I have thoroughly enjoyed previous visits. Some disappointments this time. Charcuterie plate not memorable except for its small portions which was not reflected in its high cost. Pate, however, was delicious. The fried chicken and biscuits were a disappointment as well. The batter appeared to look close to burnt, yet the meat was very pink (raw)? My 80yr old companion didn't wish to fuss, so did not complain but left most of her meal on her plate. I let the server know, and requested that he let the chef know. I asked the server what the chef had to say. His reply was that the chef said all his food left the kitchen properly cooked. End of story I guess."

  • "We dined with friends - no special occasion, just a visit. Though our table's view was of the parking lot, it was private and quiet on a busy Saturday night. Our waitress, Regina, was efficient and friendly but not overbearing. The food was excellent - some from the specials and some from the regular menu - presented beautifully, interesting combinations - delicious. We are so lucky to have Bistro Rouge in our 'burbs."

  • "This restuarant has been redone a number of times and looks better in this incarnation. Pleasant views and airy interior. Service was excellent. Locally sourced food is a plus. Having eaten at Rouge a nubmer of times, my expectations were high and were not quite met. It is better priced than Rouge, although the wine is still very expensive. OK place to eat if you live in the area, but wouldn't consider it a destination dining experience."

  • "We had a group of 8 ladies gathering for dinner on Friday evening. We were all very pleased to have a nice table in a private area of the restaurant by a window with a nice view. It made for a very enjoyable and intimate gathering! We could hear each other talk because we were somewhat secluded and that was very appreciated especially on a busy Friday night. Everyone enjoyed their food down to the desserts...SO delicious! Compliments to the chefs!! Our waitress was superb (attentive to our needs, prompt, always pleasant, discrete and sweet). Overall very positive experience for our group setting. Thank you."

  • "My co-worker from Houston found this restaurant through Open Table when we were looking for a list minute reservation for 8. They situated us at a lovely table by a window, in almost a private room. We weren't rushed and the waiter was very attentive and professional. It was relaxed, enjoyable, great food and a great choice for hosting work colleagues from out of town. "

  • "We have been to Bistro Rouge a number of times and have been disappointed with the way it is going. My wife ordered hot tea with lunch and they only had flavoured teas (Earl Gray is a flavoured tea). She ordered a drink with pear juice and rum and they used a white rum rather than the spiced rum they used to us and she found it too sweet. The egg benedict and the sandwitch I had both were very nice. Mine came with their fries and I did not like them. It turns out they put sugar on them which made them inedible. They had a BBQ spice which was OK but I left almost all of them. My wife's dish came with the roasted potatoes which she really enjoyed. The service and view were great but the food is not what it used to be."

  • "Three of us went to celebrate a birthday and we were not disappointed. The elk gnocchi was fab as were the other two low carb dishes (mine was the exception but I would not have traded it for anything) and so would highly recommend this place."

  • "This bright bistro is a real delight in the SW neighborhood. Interesting menu, including deep fried cauliflower, which was delicious. We sampled the chicken and trout, both wonderful. Nice atmosphere, bright and cheery. Would love to try the burger!"

  • "Outstanding service! The cauliflower fritter appetizer was a tasty delight! The rest of dinner was excellent but overshadowed by an absolutely amazing appetizer! The atmosphere was so relaxed - it was so refreshing to feel comfortable while enjoying great food! "

  • "My expectations were high when I learned the relationship to Rouge in Inglewood. While the food was okay, the service was terrible and comparable to low budget pancake houses. The ambience has potential, but without a higher level of service, people won't return. Simple small things make an experience. It's easy to offer a second glass of wine, refill water glasses, clean the table next door or bring the bill when we clearly are ready to leave - not doing these simple tasks lessens the experience for the diner. "

  • "Our food was fine, but my choices - asparagus soup and butternut squash risotto - were too rich and heavy. The service was OK, although the manager for that evening redeemed the service somewhat by comping us the truffle fries which my group did not like and not eat. They were also too heavy and the fries were limp and greasy, rather like dolled-up Mickey D's fries. I would not recommend the bistro for anything. I have only ticked the "great for lunch box" because this site will not accept my comments without #2 being completed. I don't know anything about the lunch menu or service."

  • "We ate early as we had another commitment. We were seated in a wedge corner at a very small table. The restaurant was empty. The windows and view were beautiful however with no window treatments it was like sitting in a spotlight, very uncomfortable. We had a reservation and it seemed we got the worst seat in the house. Our waiter was sweet, but I think his first day on the job, not knowledgable and struggled, it was painful. We both ordered the elk medallion med rare with the arugula. We got a pancake slab of meat cooked very well done on a bed of mixed greens. No arugula to be found. It was a very tasteless meal and very disappointing. The wine was great, Carmel Road Pinot Noir. . "

  • "I expected great things and was disappointed. The server provided a lot of information at a high speed so none of us at the table really knew what she had said. She was friendly and quite willing to offer recommendations. The speed of service was a bit slow but I attribute that to the fact it was Mother's Day and extremely busy. Sadly, the lobster pasta which was recommended by the server was not enjoyable at all--lobster overcooked and overall little flavour. A dining companion concluded the same thing. None of the guests at our table fully enjoyed their meal and at the prices charged that is just not acceptable. Also, we would have had dessert had the dessert menu contained anything we found enticing."

  • "Nothing to complain about other than the noise level made it hard to have a conversation at times. Nothing to rave about either. They could do a better job of letting diners know about specials. Our waiter told us but some where unable to hear him. Also not a good place for kids."

  • "Probably one of the best overall experiences we've had. We sat at the bar while waiting for our table. We arrived early to lengthen our night and so glad we did. Our bartender was a true libations expert. Made each drink from fresh ingredients and presented to is like a work of art. This is someone who is passionate about their work. Dinner followed. We shared a chartruterie plate, warm olives marinated in orange juice and a Duck confit salad. Mains were equally impressive. Great wine list and the service was good. We will defiantly return. A true Calgary gem. "

  • "Unfortunately, Bistro Rouge is the ugly sister to Rouge...and not just ugly, but FUGLY. The service at this restaurant is horrendous. We sat on the lounge side and our waiter, Jon, was inattentive and rude (dropping F-bombs in conversation with your customers is hardly acceptable). Also disconcerting that when he first greeted our table, he stopped mid-sentence to pick up the bill on the table behind him to check his tip from the previous diners before turning his attention back to our table. He couldn't remember any of the specials for the day and shook his head in disbelief when at the end of our meal, we ONLY tipped him 15%. Here's the rest of your tip: Smarten up. "
