Diner Reviews
  • "My husband and I love to dine at Bistro Rouge, either as a couple for a romantic dinner without the kids, or with a small group of friends. The service is excellent, we enjoy trying the specials, and we always get very good wine recommendations."

  • "Had a great dinner with friends at Bistro Rouge on Monday night. The steelhead trout was delicious and everyone else was very pleased with their meal. Have never been disappointed eating here. So nice to have a great restaurant like this so close to home."

  • "...I was disappointed this time and will choose a different dish next time. Our family members were very happy with the food, and we will return. I chose the steelhead trout this time and did not like the preparation - piled with almonds, sitting in a cream sauce, and it didn't smell as fresh as usual."

  • "Not impressed. The first two wines we selected were not available. Food was good but the service and atmosphere was mediocre. I will not be going back."

  • "Everything was quite lovely. Ambience was great and the food was very tasty. The service was also good with only one issue regarding gluten."

  • "In a few words, the food experience was not something I would rave to my friends about."

  • "Just a wonderful lunch experience. The service was excellent with the chef coming out of the kitchen to show us a bottle of delicious and unique maple dip reduction and also describing the healthy sprouts growing on the sunny windowsill . The servers were polite, attentive and informative. I will definitely recommend and frequent this excellent restaurant !"

  • "Great, simple menu with a good selection of dishes. The food is fresh, well prepared. Excellent burgers, well all the dishes are great, and they always have a special that most times surprises you, from a beef bourguignon, (not seen a lot in Calgary, and it was wonderful) to baised cheek of beef. Nice wine list with good options for by the glass choices. Did I mention the truffle parmesan fries?"

  • "We dined with 6 friends, we were seated in a quiet alcove near the back that was perfect for our sometimes noisy group. We reviewed the specials on the way in and 4 of our group order the butter infused rib eye, we were served appetizers and wine very quickly and waited at least a hour for the main course. When the butter infused rib eye arrived it was prime rib roast complete with Yorkshire pudding. It was good but not what we ordered. We also had to ask for parts of the meal that were not delivered and one dessert that did not appear until we asked about it and even then not until the rest of our group had finished dessert. Over all the food was good, we are disappointed as we were hoping for a good fine dining option on the Westside."

  • "We were sat at our first table, 10 min later the waiter came to take our drink order and 10 min after that the manager asked if we could move to another table to accommodate a larger group. We said no problem. The drinks came 10 minutes after and were wrong. The $30 meat and cheese board came before I could order a glass of wine to accompany it. It was good although we couldn't eat the duck liver (too potent). We waited a while before server took our entre order and they were out of the first 3 items we ordered. 45 min later the food came, it was tasty but the experience was ruined by then."

  • "Having been here before we knew what to expect but sitting at a different table gives a different perspective on the restaurant. I did not notice the view of the city last time as we were in more of a room previously. It was a Saturday night and the place was very busy and a little on the loud side. The service was exactly what we needed as we were catching up with friends. The food was great and the wine was perfect. The only issue we had was that at the 7:30 pm sitting they had sold out of all the specials for the evening. We all were looking forward to the Chef's planned meal as my guests had been there many times before. Nice cosy place to take friends."

  • "Food was good but service inattentive. People dropped off our good and we didn't see her until she came to drop off the bill. No quality check. She's totally disappeared. No one to flag down for help..If I'd have waited for pepper as I'd wanted my food would have been cold. Restaurant wasn't even that busy. Was my third time there and not excited to return."

  • "Given the worst table in an empty restaurant next to kitchen door and constant traffic. Nothing special about the food and overpriced. If you order their local cola expect a glass full of ice and about a shot glass of actual cola. Don't expect a refill unless you want to pay another $5.00 per glass. We had a gift card from Rouge that we were going to use at Bistro Rouge but apparently they don't accept each others gift cards. The manager came over and he was extremely rude and tried to tell us the reason they don't accept each others gift cards is because of price points between the 2 locations. He then went on to try to tell us it was because of the Huge commissions they have to pay for selling gift cards. What?? We won't return."

  • "Saw the sign on the corner and was tempted to give the Bistro Rouge a try for my wife's birthday The decor is a bit moderns/spare - hard surfaces, and musical bit loud Good view The food was good, and the portions larger than I was expecting My wife's prime rib was a bit on the fatty side It was a quiet Monday night, but still busy, and a little noisy"

  • "A really fun space for our rather loud conversation--tables are well spaced, and it felt private. I love a table by a big window, even though the weather was very wintry outside. The service was impeccable--friendly and attentive. A very interesting menu with good variety. Everyone in our party of 6 was happy with their meal."

  • "As usual, excellent services and food. An outstanding restaurant for a Friday night"

  • "Nice ambience, nice menu, horrible service!!! The waiter basically ditched us after we ordered our food. While the tables around us had 2 or 3 waiters stopping by we were left alone in the corner without the drink we ordered and empty dishes piling up."

  • "This was our Valentine`s supper. Unfortunately illness prevented us from enjoying it on February 14. It is really nice to see the portions are ``shareable``. We had the Chicken breast with tomato confit and the cauliflower fritter. The presentation was excellent as was the table service. We were able to finish our bottle of wine undisturbed. A lovely evening!! Now , if only it would stop snowing."

  • "We did not have a mediocre dish in this restaurant everything is well prepared. The best chteubriand in the city (or further away."

  • "This was our second visit with friends and we enjoyed ourselves. The menu is short but interesting. Can make an evening just with starters and great wines which is probably a better plan. Issues were the lobster pasta dish that came cool then back salty and is a bit overpriced. Also found the prime rib to be not so tender. All said it is a nice room and service is great."

  • "We looked forward to trying the brunch at Bistro Rouge, but the slow service and poor food make it highly unlikely that we will return. We were promptly shown to our table and received beverages within a reasonable time frame. Our food was very slow to arrive and varied from extremely overcooked eggs to a tasteless croque monsieur. The only saving grace was the chocolate mousse ordered by my aunt; she enjoyed this item. Coffee was served but we had to wait a long time for teaspoons to arrive to stir in sugar. Poor service techniques such as holding water glasses by the top rim when re-filling and scraping and stacking plates at the table were rampant."

  • "Bistro Rouge has refreshed some of their classics and added a few nice surprises to their menu. The cauliflower fritters are dressed differently and are garnished with fried capers and are possibly even better than before. Everything that our group of 5 ordered was delicious and nicely presented. The service was great - our waiter was attentive without being intrusive and very patient with our decisions (which are hard! so many tempting choices!). Thanks!"

  • "Bistro Rouge stays true to its name. Food was delicious - sweet breads, lobster bisque, rotisserie chicken and lobster noodles. Service outstanding."

  • "The food was absolutely fantastic and delicious. I review many new restaurants but had not had the opportunity until now to check this one out. We had a ladies night out and shared many of the dishes and they did an amazing job of ensuring that we could share everything. The server was ok but seemed flustered and very junior from what I am used to at Rouge. The location has failed many times and I believe the main reason has been the wait staff and not necessarily the location or the food. The food was exceptional and the service could be worked on."

  • "the bouillabaisse was a very good fish stew, but not the real thing you can have in Marseille or Antibe."

  • "We go out regularly and Rouge has always been a favourite but this place has some work to do. Main issue is the inattentive wait staff. Drink glasses were empty and never offered a second. Noticed this at other tables too. Little to no engagement with the customers and wrong dessert brought out to top it off. Hope they get things straightened out as we love having a restaurant with such potential in the neighbourhood."

  • "Food was great and service was good as well. Charming place to eat but isn't as cheap as one would think. Friendly and welcoming staff. I would come back or recommend to some else. If I am being picky, during busy hours the place gets really stuffy and was too hot."
    Dined on 3/7/2014
  • "Very pleasant staff, we were surprised at just how amazing the food was. A packed house can get loud though. At the end of the night we were given a fresh baguette as we left, as they were closing and not keeping they day's fresh bread!"

  • "We are regulars because of the food; predictably very well done, from world class chef's and obviously well trained staff. The specials are now of great interest to us, as their bistro menu selection isn't large. We have introduced many friends and taken colleagues to share the excellent food and service. Our last visit was Friday, 6:00 - 9:00 pm, with a couple of friends, we found the noise level grew to the point it was nearly impossible to have conversation. So with that being the only drawback ever, we will simply take it into account in planning our next visit. Another nice treat this particular evening, famous owner Paul Rogalski, was out and about and working in the open kitchen and engaged in organization and service details."

  • "Nice ambience, helpful service with an interesting menu. Unfortunately the food did not live up to expectations, OK butgenerally pretty bland. Left feeling it was good but not special."

  • "The food was really good and I would go back just based on that, usually. But it's to be noted that the service was impeccable and I have to say, it made it memorable and very enjoyable - thank you Paul! I had the duck confit salad, half chicken with truffle fries as my main (very moist and had a beautiful flavor). I finished with carrot cake but ended up switching with my dining partner for his salted caramel bread pudding - it was so yummy! It was a nice quiet meal by a window with a view of the city and it was better than we anticipated since it was our first visit - we weren't sure what it would be like but the reviews were great and they proved to be right! :) Definitely try it, don't think, just go!"

  • "Poor service, followed by uninspired food. Steak came out medium-well when I ordered medium rare and cocktail came out with no booze. Server didn't listen and was rude. Table selection was extremely poor especially when there are only 3 tables seated all night."
