Diner Reviews
  • "I've been here dozens of times. I used to work in the neighborhood. The food is generally a superb rendition of French brassarie favorites. The service is always friendly. We wanted to treat our DC hosts for housing us. . These people are definite foodies. They were very pleased. The prices are fair considering the high quality food and high quality preparation. DC has several fine French restaurants, but Bistro d'OC is the best value."

  • "Good food, well and sometimes imaginatively prepared, nice-sized servings, pleasant servers. My two companions, new to B d"O especially liked apps and desserts. It's a little funky, part of its charm...but don't accept seating on the second floor unless you have very good balance and knees!"

  • "We enjoyed our first dinner so much that we went back 2 days later. We were on vacation and found this little gem. We had dinner there on our first night in town and again on our last. The menu was complete with daily specials offered. The wine list is fairly extensive, but you need to ask for it. The servers were very accomodating. This is a charming restaurant and reminded me of the small bistros throughout the wine regions in France. Most enjoyable!"

  • "We came at 7 and left at 11, so what more can I say? It is a lovely restaurant where they treat you well and you can enjoy the food and hospitality but also your conversation. Either for a large group -- I had nine -- or a dinner for two, this place is truly is a gem."

  • "Terrific restaurant not far from the tourist sites in DC. My wife and I were down for the day from Philly for the cherry festival. We have been to the restaurant many times before and highly recommend it to anyone who loves French food. We're foodies and loved the lamb brains and rabbit rillette appetizers (something you definitely do not find on most menus). They have numerous excellent daily specials. The desserts are all homemade and superb! The wine from Languedoc also pairs excellently with the various dishes. Top notch gem in the DC metro area."

  • "Across from Ford's Theater and only a couple of blocks from the Warner and National Theaters, this French bistro offers good food, capable service, and a three-course $25 pre-theater meal that even includes a glass of wine. The crusty rustic bread is so good I might just go back for bread, wine, and cheese."

  • "Great food, great ambiance, we have a lovely time every time. A slice of Paris in Washington DC."

  • "Convenient to Ford's Theater, but pre-theater menu was limited and not just adequate. Service was rushed and abrupt. Disappointing."

  • "I chose this restaurant because we were seeing a play at Ford's Theater and it's right across the street. It is a cute atmosphere, and the prices are very fair. But the food was just okay. The butternut squash soup was pretty bland. The croque monsieur was decent, although the fries that accompanied it were too greasy. The house chardonnay wasn't very good. It's probably fair to say we got exactly what we paid for. As long as you're not expecting great French bistro fare, and you stick to simple things, it's fine. It also might be a good choice if you're looking for breakfast items (like omelettes) for lunch. That said, there are probably better choices in this neighborhood."

  • "Before attending a play at Fords Theater, we stopped in for the Pris Fixe per-show dinner. The waitress was friendly, and the service was prompt. The ambience was pleasant and had a "neighborhood" feel. But the food was nothing special. I didn't expect much for $25 per person, but it was still a bit disappointing. Squash soup was just a bit too thin. The entrees were edible, but plain and the presentation was the same. I suspect items offered off of the regular menu are more thoughtfully prepared and presented, but the Pris Fixe meal did little more than feed you and get you out of the door quickly."

  • "Chose this restaurant because of it's proximity to Ford's Theatre (it is right across the street) and because it offered lunch. It was much more casual than expected. We ordered 5 dishes - the salad and escargot were very good. The other two meals were good. The chicken and mushroom entrée was very disappointing. Service was unremarkable."

  • "The resrurant is in an older building across from the Ford Theater, good location. Food was very good desserts were OK. I would go there again to further explore their menu."

  • "This is a good location, especially if you're going out for a night at the theater. The food was very good - very typical French bistro. No complaints about the food. While our server was very nice, she was overwhelmed with too many tables and spread too thin. As a result, her service to our table suffered. Also, they have this large chalkboard with the specials on it, that she dragged around to each table. We found that odd. The servers should know the specials and tell them to the guests, not drag around a board. Also, we ordered a round of 'slippery nipple' shots and the bar tender prepared hot coffees with Bailey's and whipped cream - Huh? Needless to say, we sent them back."

  • "Iama long term customer at this restuarant and have always been completely satisfied, as I was during my most recent visit. IF i did not commenton the wine list it is because I always have wine by the glass and do not get into a perusal of the list of wine by the bottle."

  • "We have been going to Bistro Doc for 8 years and have always had great meals and fantastic service. Great place to go after a movie at E Street."

  • "Went here before going to a show at Fords. Very convenient. Good food, fast, overall a nice experience. Only down sides were: -paper table cloths -after salad, the waitress took the dirty fork and put it on the table when she cleared, saying "you'll need this later". For some reason as a former waiter, that always bugs me. Why not just bring a new/clean fork? Overall, we would go again next time we go to Fords because of the location. After a lot of searching it did seem like one of the better choices in the area, and from a food perspective it certainly was great!"

  • "This little neighborhood bistro has so much promise. With a more frequent change in the menu choices and better service on the part of the waiting staff, an appealing atmosphere could become a local magnet. Still, all things considered, a pleasant experience."

  • "I've gone with friends many times to Bistro d'Oc. It's about a block away from E. St. Cinema but I've gone when i"ve not been to the movies. It's never really crowded, although that may be because we are usually having an early dinner. It's pleasant and welcoming and the food varies from good to very good. Service usually good, professional and attentive. Last time my friends and i were there we were able to take advantage of the pre-theater dinner, 3 courses for $25. There are not a lot of choices but there is usually something that appeals. This time server told us it included a complimentary glass of wine, although i don't know that is always the case because i don't recall the menu said that. The specials here are always interesting."

  • "Great experience -- perfect for pre-theatre or, in our case, brunch pre-movie. I brought my picky-picky friend, who raved about her hanger steak and complained only that the salad was too large..."

  • "I've always associated DC French restaurants with a snobbery factor pandering to a certain clientele that thinks quite highly of themselves. Of the few French places I've visited the food was mediocre, overpriced and greatly overrated. The waitstaff tended to be indifferent and the ambiance was generally not enjoyable. This place has changed my perception completely. Finally! Escargot that's not tough and so smothered in a herb blend as to overwhelm the taste of the snail itself. The rustic, cozy design of Bistro d'OC added to an enjoyable, comfortable dining experience. The staff was friendly and very attentive. I will definitely be back . The food was scrumptious! Thank you for reminding me of my love for French food."

  • "My small work group likes to go out for lunch to celebrate coworker birthdays. One member has been to Bistro d'OC a number of times in the evening for dinner and pre-theater, so this was his place of choice to celebrate. We had a reservation and were seated as soon as we arrived. The fresh bread we shared was delicious with a crunchy golden crust. I had veal blanquettes with jasmine rice. The dish was delicious, veal was tender and the rice delicately flavored. One co-worker had the mussels and the broth was fabulous - made with Sauvignon Blanc and tarragon. Will definitely return to this restaurant."

  • "My colleague and I had tickets for an event at the Ford Theater and made reservations at Bistro d"OC because of the reviews and proximity to the theater. We were not disappointed! When we arrived however, our hearts sank! A tour bus of at least 50 young adults arrived at the same time! Luckily the large party was wisked upstairs and didn't seem to effect our experience at all! Our service was superb. We ordered from the Pre theater menu and both enjoyed the 3 course meal. The highlights were the soup, the salmon and the cream puffs! Timing was perfect for the 7:30 show."

  • "This restaurant is very well located in Penn Quarter to eat either before or after a show or game at one of the nearby theatres and the Verizon Center. Food is French with an oriental twist. This restaurant is never busy. I have always been able to get a table when I needed one even at the last minute. I really appreciate that it is not noisy."

  • "Recent noon reservation with a colleague. Before we could remove our coats and settle in the waiter set menus down and propped the specials board on our banquette. We asked for time; he gave about 30 seconds before returning to stand over us poised to extract our order. We both ordered soup (fair at best) which came promptly; however, he brought the entrees before my guest finished the soup. My omelet with crab would have been better titled 'crab flavored' since there was very little discernible crab meat, and I found it dry. The waiter asked about dessert/coffee while we were still mid-entree; when we declined both he returned with the check although we had not finished eating. Rude service+so-so food = bad choice given other local options"

  • "Delicious food, but very small portions. Wonderful location. Very pleasant staff."

  • "Nice menu but the wine is overpriced for the quality and serving size and the harsh overhead lighting makes the place feel more like a railroad station cafe than a place to have an intimate dinner."

  • "Had house red Languedoc wine and Cote du Rhone; both were delicious. Ordered the charcuterie for appetizer. Very good; only gave 2 cornichons which was a bit disappointing. Baguette bread basket was yummy. Husband got Steak Frite w/ Roquefort sauce. Tasted like we were in France. Don't know if it's the meat they use or the way they cook it. I had the cassoulet, which was huge. I barely ate half of it. Very tasty duck confit, sausage and lamb. Only had 2 small chunks of lamb though, wish there was more. Had profiteroles for dessert. Overall, very delicious meal. Will definitely go back. It's a piece of France in downtown DC."

  • "This is a provincial French restaurant, so the food was excellent yet simple. We dined upstairs which was very quiet - things seemed a little more lively downstairs. The ambiance was lovely. My only complaint would be that the service was a little slow, but this is a minor quibble."

  • "We arrived early for our reservation so decided to order a bottle of wine at the bar while we awaited our table. It took nearly 10 minutes to get a wine list, so our inital impressions of the restaurant were not good. The interior of the bistro is a bit tired, and mneeds updating (avoid the back room). That said, the bar area is cozy, and the seating near the pretty bay window in front is very nice. But the food did not disappoint. The cassoulet was one of the best I've had in the States, the wine list is reasonably priced, and the simple salad we shared to start was well put together and delicious. The cost of the entire meal was below what one would expect. So reserve the window, avoid the bar, and enjoy the authentic fare."

  • "The food at Bistro D'OC is delicious. I went there this weekend with my husband for Valentine's day for a night out out. The building where the restaurant is located is very old so the insulation in the place is not very good. I took off my jacket and it felt very cold on the second floor. The tables are located near the windows and given the poor insulation you can feel the cold air coming through the windows. I will definitely go again but maybe when the weather is warmer. The service was alright - I noticed most of the tables had a little candle on them and the one where we were sitting had no candle. So I had to request one. Aside from that - this place is a great restaurant for dinner during warmer weather."

  • "Dinner was ok. My braised short ribs were the best of all dishes that we ordered. My boyfriend's streak and frites were nothing special. My goat cheese tartine was next runner up, but I wasn't wowed by it. What really got me was the waiter. He never came to refill our waters. He took our dessert plates away when we both had quite a bit of food left. To be fair, we WERE finished, but I don't like when I'm not asked if I'm finished with my plate before it's taken away. If it was left in front of me, I probably would have had more, so maybe it was a blessing in disguise. . . We had a nice evening, but didn't think the restaurant was great enough to go back. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great."
