Diner Reviews
  • "Superb food and service. Ahi tartare is a spectacular appetizer and the venison loin is one of the truly fine main courses you'll find anywhere."

  • "THE BEST in the Irvine market place. Suggest you try the chopped California chicken....its great"

  • "Good food but not outstanding enough to merit the high prices. The artwork and music are plusses"

  • "We are frequent diners at Bistango, went for my birthday and it was spectacular as always. Best food, ambiance, & top notch service - just an all around great vibe. Excellent food and wine list, must try the swordfish - lite and oh so tasty, a personal favorite. I have food allergies and they are as always very accommodating with no hassles and our orders always arrive perfect without any reason to send them back. Happy dining! :-)"

  • "Bistango has a wonderful atmosphere, very trendy, nicely appointed, live music in the bar, and fantastic food with top notch service. It's on the bottom floor of a high rise office building, but you would never know it. Valet parking. There's a creative ambiance that you feel immediately when you walk in the door. Bistango is one of the few OC restaurants that has maintained a high level of excellence for over 20 years. Go, you'll love it."

  • "Have been there before but this time service was slow and rather sloppy. Had to ask for the special of the day, it was not mentioned. Food took a long time coming but generally it is a fine place to eat. I will return."

  • "Ambiance is the reason for this restaurant. The art work and the open feel of the restaurant are what first get you with this restaurant. Then the great service. Food is only marginal and does not compare to Maestro's or Flemings. However, the food is also not as pricey as those too. Serving sizes are also smaller. Also the website may have different pre-fixe meals than when you order. I had my eyes on the hanger steak and it was not available."

  • "I'm sure by now most people are getting tired of my weekly reviews of Bistango so I'll keep this one short. Try the pizza topped with shrimp, corn, cilantro,et al---it's fantastic!"

  • "Went here for my fiancee's birthday dinner. Expected more from the crab and lobster cake than a single patty which was nothing to write home about. The presentation was very nice though. My fiancee had a Malbec and I had a Pinot Noir which had a decent bite to it. She had the Prawn Risotto which she loved. I ordered the Venison which tasted really nice but I thought the spinach was a bit salty and I was not a fan of the poached pear. It came with a german pasta that was a bit bland. I remember that the live band played "Somewhere Beyond The Sea" and "Besame Mucho." It was not noisy and obtrusive but just right. It was my fiancee's birthday so they were very sweet and surprised us with a cheese cake with a birthday candle."

  • "Great dining experience. Paella was superior with Rose (wine). Get a booth on the atrium. Perfect choice for a special occasion."

  • "On a previous visit I suggested an alternative coarse pepper crust on the Ahi entree. Alas, there it was on this visit. The pepper gives the fish more spice than the previous sesame version and, when combined with the included wasabi, makes this a special dish. The side of jalapeno risotto was superb and was the perfect companion to the main dish. Service was impeccable."

  • "Bistango is in the top 5 restaurants in Orange County. Great food and bar with a very able and capable bartender in Steve."

  • "I was invited to Bistango by a great friend and had some difficulty finding it as it is in a business district. This is a great place hidden among the office buildings in a beautiful Atrium area. Hostess was kind as gracious as my dinner partner was running late. She cheerfully said she would hold our reservation until he arrives, then seated us immediately. Mario, our server was immediate in his greeting and consistent in his service. Our glasses were never empty and no questions were left in answered. The cream of mushroom soup and baby green salad were amazing, followed by perfectly cooked steaks. Though mine was very fatty, my friends was beyond perfection. The wine list is extensive and varied. "

  • "We went on a Thursday night, so it wasn't crowded. There was a terrific duo playing throw-back song from the 70s and 80s in the bar area. We were seated in a booth on the other side, so we could hear and enjoy the music, but it didn't disturb our conversation. We could see people on the bar side dancing and drinking--that's why I checked "Vibrant bar scene." My favorite thing about this place was the vibe! I LOVED the umbrellas on the ceiling, the artwork, the coziness of the booths yet openness of the room. Our food was also outstanding. We could have stayed there all night. We will DEFINITELY be back!"

  • "Consistently outstanding in every respect. Rack of lamb is as good as it gets and the sea bass melts in your mouth. Try the Waldorf salad--it was a very pleasant surprise. The garlic soup is a classic and the spinach salad with added avocado was delicious. Service by Gary was perfect."

  • "We've been here a million times as it is close to Newport and easy to get to, easy parking. The food is always consistent and on par with pricing in the OC. The rack of lamb and the mushroom crusted halibut are always favorites as is the chocolate souffle -- the best one in the OC with plenty of whipped cream and chocolate sauce."

  • "We have been coming to Bistango for over 25 years and were disappointed. The wine was bad and we should have returned the bottle. The food was average at best. Hopefully this was just a bad night."

  • "Not yet on the printed menu but making a sneak preview were duck sliders. How were they? Excellent! The kobe beef ravioli is spectacular and the salmon and chicken entrees were cooked to perfection. Service was again impeccable."
    Dined on 5/24/2014
  • "The food was excellent. Everything we order was delucious. The service was good. The chairs were uncomfortable. The were patio chair and they were tilting back to much, so you could not rest your back while eating. The indoor outdoor patio was a bit weird. The music and the croud was a bit old, 60 plus, lots of grey hair. The same food in a hip place would have got them a higher rating from me."

  • "Great food and service! This restaurant's quality never changes and is and always will be a reliable 5 star restaurant."

  • "I've had business lunches and dinners at this fine restaurant with a wonderful ambiance, nice jazz bar and good food. Nice touch is the beautiful art on the walls, all of which is for sale. I enjoyed a quiet anniversary meal as well. It is fit for any occasion."

  • "The food, service and atmosphere is excellent. We also enjoy dancing, and having a dance floor and live band is the extra special touch we enjoy."

  • "Superb food and service. The crab and lobster cake is one of the best appetizers anywhere. The mushroom crusted Alaskan halibut is a marvelous dish and the peppered culotte steak stands out as the best of the beef entrees. Service by Gary was outstanding as is everything associated with this restaurant."

  • "Another great dining experience at Bistango! I took a work colleague and two visitors; we were in a slight hurry due to one of the visitors' evening flight schedule, and the restaurant was super-accommodating of our timing needs. Great service; great food; nice selection of beers and wine; live music but not dominating the aural atmosphere. This is definitely where I like to take visitors when I want to take them somewhere nice that's in the Irvine vicinity."

  • "Dinner at Bistangos was a culinary delight. From appetizers through the chocolTe soufflé the food was delicious and well presented. Special mention for the Chilean Sea Bass which was phenomenal. Others in the party had similar comments about the rack of lamb as well as a bone in rib chop. And about the chocolate soufflé all I can say is have it. Service was acceptable and there was even a 3 piece band playing at an appropriate sound level. Bistangos is expensive but worth it. "

  • "Very very nice find for food, music and art. The meal was excellent, and the wine list extensive. All the service staff was pleasant and attentive from the valet to the owner, who came be each table. "

  • "Been meaning to try Bistango but for some reason never quite made it. Thanks to Open Table's info, I tried it and it was wonderful as stated above. I'd like to especially thank our waiter, P Mehran. He was attentive to two ladies, knowledgeable of the menu and made our dinner experience most enjoyable."

  • "Service was not up to par with what you would expect at this type of restaurant. Waiter would not substitute sides, rolled his eyes, and then when we explained it was due to allergies, said he would see what he could do...Absolutely unacceptable when you are ordering off a dinner menu at 11 am (holiday weekend) and spending average of $40 per person on main course. Food was ok, not spectacular. Not coming back here any time soon. Not our first experience with this type of service here, but will be our last. "

  • "Great food, great live music, and great service nicely set in the atrium of an office building, but you would never know, unless you looked up above the umbrellas! Fantastic!"

  • "Maybe I should have been more specific about the seating. My daughter wanted to take me and my 92-year-old mother out for a Mother's Day lunch, so we chose Bistango on the Friday before Mother's Day. I had made the reservation on Open Table and advised them of the occasion. So my daughter arrived first, and I let my mother out in front (to go in with her walker) while I parked. Sadly, the table they had been given was right smack in the traffic path where people were led to their seats. I can't think of a worse location, but it was too late to change. Other than the constant traffic back and forth next to us, the food was excellent, the ambiance delightful, and the martinis powerful (that helped!). Nevertheless, I'd still go back."

  • "Brought back many memories--good music good service"

  • "Food was good, but not terribly memorable. The service was outstanding and inobtrusive. I loved the bread service and water was refilled frequently. I had the chicken and barley soup, which tasted fresh and light. The scallop on rice was just ok. The rice was cold and hard/dense, and there was way too much mango relish which drowned the flavor of the scallops."

  • "This Restaurant is ideal for any special date or just an evening out. "
    Dined on 4/19/2014
  • "Been here many times and always for business lunch meetings because service and food has always been reliable. Overall their menu is good so you can't go wrong with anyone who has special dietary needs. They have a decent wine selection if you're celebrating something special. So in general, the food and good and service is good, the menu is a bit pricey but worth it to have a reliable place to take a business associate or client to. "

  • "A new chef has been brought in from the outside and, as most creative artists do, has started modifying and/or eliminating long time menu staples. For example, the duck salad has been modified to include duck that has been sauteed rather than fried in its own fat. What this does is to take away the slight crunch from the fried version which compliments the strawberries that are mixed with the salad. Also, the meat on this visit was tough and loaded with fat. It wasn't very good. There are other examples but space doesn't allow enough discussion-those will be addressed in later reviews. The cullotte steak was excellent although a superb mushroom risotto which used to accompany the dish has been replaced by so-so French fries. Great service."
