Diner Reviews
  • "Biraporettis is always reliable. The food is delicious city American Italian. Nothing fancy just always good. Portions are fair . Salads are fresh, meats cooked as you like, Italian tomato sauces are authentic. They do their best to get the food to your table quickly so you don't miss curtain. We like stopping by after the show for a drink and dessert, also."

  • "Birraporetti's is always enjoyable to us. We especially like it when the sax player is working. The food, service and ambiance are very good. It's also nice that you can have a normal conversation at your table without having to raise your voice. We love this place!"

  • "We needed to catch a 8 pm show, so the service had to be brisk to get us out in time, and it was. But more surprising, was that the food was just great. Try the vea picata with spinach pasta or the goat cheese entre as well, just tasty!"

  • "I've known about Birraporetti's for decades but had not had the opportunity to dine there. It's a favorite among longtime Houstonians, especially patrons of the performing arts. While the menu seems somewhat dated, the specials showed the capabilities of the kitchen. We were quite pleased with the results. The wine selection is limited, but the wine we did have was more than acceptable. Our service was quite good and extraordinarily friendly despite what was clearly a busy moment when we arrived. Our meals were better than what i expected from a place that could easily afford to coast with the built in theater audiences, but we were impressed with everything that hot the table. The price was also comparable or better than similar meals."

  • "Parmesan cheese? Birra has always offered it in the past. Was not offered to us this visit. It is a staple for good Italian food. Your grilled salmon becomes just average without it."

  • "The food and atmosphere were good. They were not able to blacken the salmon however because they had run out of blackening spices. Other than that, it was a very nice dinner. Bryan, our server, was attentive and did a very good job."

  • "Not big buffet fans, though it looked good, we did a la carte and food was excellent. this woud be good for groups with different tastes"

  • "We go to the Pops and this is just one block from Jones Hall. It is easy in, good table, able to talk with guests, and the food is good."

  • "We arrived at our reservation time and were promptly seated at a table for two in front of a pretty mantle. My first thought was that it was a very nice place to sit. However, we were so close to another couple next to us that we might as well have introduced ourselves and put the tables together. Anyone passing between the two tables had to scoot sideways. I wish that the powers-that-be would take a few tables out. Certainly even better and safer service can be accomplished with a bit more room to negotiate. It would also enhance the ambiance and make guests more comfortable. Since we enjoyed the service and the food I expect we will return, but it won't be my first choice!"

  • "Great for a meal before the show or a drink afterwards. Beside the Alley Theater and across the street from Jones Hall"

  • "Gave us what we wanted- location, food, wine & patience. Our waiter, JD was positive & attentive without being intrusive. The other wait staff were equally sensitive to our needs with a smile (always a plus for us when we go out for dinner). Just wished our table was made stable prior to sitting. But that was fixed by our waiter. Will have to go back for Brunch & listen to the Jazz band!"

  • "Noisy, mediocre food at best, terrible "jazz" at the brunch , and very poor service. I would not recommend eating there. The only plus - it was the only pre-theater brunch I could find in the theater district."

  • "Our waiter disappeared for long enough that we felt we should mention we were on the way to a show - big mistake - all the food came out at once and some of it was not cooked properly. We left with more than enough time to get to the show - which showed us that the restaurant could have taken the time to cook our food properly. We eat out before the show often, but will not go hear again."

  • "The food is good enough, however not too impressive. I was there for the dinner murder mystery, which was sufficiently entertaining but hardly worth $60 per person. We had drinks at the bar with appetizers prior to the dinner show, and those were average with rather average service. The location is lovely, it's a nice restaurant for before or after theater in the downtown area."

  • "Awesome food and drinks! Full bar with all mixers one can imagine (including my personal favorite, their 'home-made ginger ale)! Great place to eat within walking distance of the Theater District (intersection of Louisiana and Prairie Streets)! Reasonably priced! The waitstaff are professional, polite, and most helpful. Everyone should experience this fine Houston restaurant at least once. If you love excellent Italian food at its best, then Birraporetti's is the place to go!"

  • "It had been years since I was last at Birraporetti's. I am somewhat of a foodie and was not interested in this restaurant. However, we wanted a comfortable spot for a light meal before the opera this week. We decided to give Birraporetti's a try. I had remembered a darker decor. The food was good and the atmosphere and decor were comfortable. And you can not beat the convenience. We will go back."

  • "We went to hear the bands on Monday and they were great. The group was managed well and service kept up. I will go back to hear the love music."

  • "I brought my two girls here for the live jazz brunch. It was $100 not including tip for the three of us to eat a not so impressive brunch buffet. The good was the omelette and waffle station, and the bottomless mimosas. Service was great. The bad was no live jazz music at the "live jazz brunch" and the buffet tasted like frozen food off the sysco or schwanns truck."

  • "My Family enjoyed a delightful meal before the TUTS, Wizard of Oz Play. Our two servers were very friendly and personable (Kevin and Chris), and added much to the experience. Food was reasonable and promptly served in time for the play."

  • "Birraporetti's offers a good and reliable jazz brunch on Sundays that is very convenient for those attending events at the Alley, Jones Hall, or the Wortham Center. The buffet has a wide array of salads, pastas, meats, and breakfast items. Service is good."

  • "Great location if you are catching a show downtown. Servers will be very busy, but they will do their best to serve to serve you. Great for dessert and cocktails after the show as well."

  • "Birraporetti's is an excellent place to go on a date. However, it also seems to be a place where you can go for a lunch meeting as well. The food was excellent and the service was even better. We arrived at 1900 and were seated immediately. Within moments of seating the waiter was there to take our drink orders. Soon after receiving our drinks, we placed our order. We had our food by 1920. Both mine and my wife's were delicious. After we ate, we got dessert, which was also amazing and quick. The waiter was very attentive without being overbearing. I recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great atmosphere with great food."

  • "Got there at 5:45 thinking we had plenty of time before a 7:30 show across the street. We were wrong. Meals ordered at 6:20, Salads and bread never made it to the table. Entrees steaming (microwaved) arrived to table at 7:10."

  • "My visit to Birraporetti's was very quick because we were going to an event at Jones Hall. We had a 6:15 reservation and was seated at our table about 6:40-6:45. There seemed to be some confusion at the front desk as to what the manager was doing to prepare tables for customers. We asked several times if our table was ready."

  • "I wanted to have a nice dinner for seven friends last night before the Opera and made reservations in advance. On arriving, the place was packed and the line at the hostess stand was almost out the door. Was told that the line for reservations and non-reservations was the same line, so had to wait 15+ minutes just to get seated. The service was the absolute worst I have ever experienced. I made it quite clear what time we needed to leave when we arrived. At five minutes until time to leave for the curtain, the main course still had not arrived (after an hour wait) and the server said 'it may not happen; maybe you want to come back later to finish your meal'. This was stated with a lot of attitude. Needless to say, I won't be back."

  • "If you are attending a function down in the theater district, this is a great place. It is a short walk to the Hobby Center but a pleasant one. They have a special menu for play goers - like in NY-- The choices are good and the price is reasonable."

  • "We come here two to three times a year after attending a play or the Houston Ballet, so it is always pretty late when we come. We have always had great servers. Our server this time was good, but a few of the people in our group commented about how we felt as though she was ready to go home and was probably wishing we would hurry up. She was courteous, but not as friend as other servers we have had in the past. We still had a great time."

  • "Birraporetti's is still a great spot for downtown and theater dining, but the restaurant is in need of basic repairs and update. Shabby and faded. But, service was very good at lunch and the food was tasty and a good value."

  • "The food was good, and the server was nice enough. She just wasn't very good at waiting tables."

  • "We arrived at 6:30 pm for pre-show dinner, and were told it would "be a while, tables are being bussed". We waited for a table (about 20 minutes), after being told rather rudely by the floor manager that "he was trying his best". He finally opened up additional dining space. The waitstaff there were polite and trying to deal with the situation, unfortunately the food delivered to our table was uniformly cold. We ate fast and left as quickly as we could, but do NOT plan to return. Poor planning and poor customer service at arrival with mediocre food is an experience we can do without."

  • "I took my girlfriend here to have a nice dinner before going to the ballet. We made a reservation, for 5:30, and did not get our drinks until 5:50 even though there were only four other total people in our entire section. The stuffed mushrooms were really just mushrooms from a jar dropped into a plate of runny cheese sauce. The shrimp diablo had about four small shrimp buried inside a plate of chewy pasta. The dessert took over 15 minutes to arrive after we ordered it, and even though we were seated at 5:30, we didn't leave until nearly 7:10 even though our server knew we were going to see the show. Horrendously over-priced food that I wouldn't even expect to pass for good at a fast food restaurant. Will not go back."

  • "We had gotten last minute tickets to "Freud's Last Session" and wanted a place to dine close to the Alley Theatre. Through "Open Table" we secured a reservation at the time we wanted. One that worked well with our 8:00 PM tickets. Neither my wife or I had been to Birraporetti's in years and we were both surprised at the ambiance, service and food. We were seated in a raised area close to the front door which gave us almost a private dining area Service was quick and attentive and the food arrived in plenty of time for us to enjoy it before the play. The food was good, solid and substantial. We will consider Birraporetti's again should we need last minute reservations."

  • "Always great for after theater on the weekends. Very pretty! Windows show the night streets of downtown. Almost like a New York late night romantic, ambiance. Jazz bands and local venues play. It is like taking a step back into the past and remembering the elegance of the late night dinner clubs. We hold season tickets to Broadway Across America and Birra's late night dinners always round out our evening."
