  • "Simply elevated cuisine since they re-opened. Was great before yet now is at a much more serious level. The market salad with heirloom tomatoes with mozzarella and basil dressing was as good as at very famous places. The seafood stew was superb also with impeccable saffron broth. Dessert was excellent and with dinner had an excellent bottle of Bordeaux for only 60 dollars! Very warm San Francisco gem has just got even better."

  • "First time back with new owners and was pleasantly pleased with dinner. Liver pate was excellent as were short ribs (Fri special) and roast chicken. Service was professional and attentive and meun selections were vared enough so everyone could find something that interested them. We've been going to Big 4 for 30 plus years--nice to know it is still a special place. Good piano music in bar."

  • "We had a great night at the Big 4 and took my husband's father for his last night visiting. The ambiance is very old school, in a charming way. We had the oysters and ribeye as well as the fontina-stuffed pork chop, all of which was memorable. The bar had live piano when we finished dinner and was packed with people - a great spot to have dinner and drinks after. I would definitely go back, and have heard that the burger is not to be missed."

  • "Truly a disappointment. A consulting group though it was cleverly updating the reataurant. It fired Dean, the Maitre d' for 8 years, and who knew people by name It removed from the menu esablished successes like lobster bisque it purged the while wine list of exceptional items like German Mittel Mosels in favor of dry chardonnary blige water available anywhere in California. It hired staff with no appreciation for history or culture of the hotel. It didn't acknowledge much less address special requests submitted under the open table reservation. Overall, terrible corporate communication practices. The Singapore owners should fire the entire consulting group and ask itself how it acquired such bad advice."

  • "We were anxious about returning to one of our favorite spots after it had been closed for renovation. Nothing, except the carpet, the menu and the chef, had changed and it was as comfortable and welcoming as it had always been. Right down to the same waiters we'd grown accustomed to seeing!"

  • "Went there Sunday afternoon, sat at the bar, and had one of the best burgers I've ever eaten. So two nights later I figured we would go back with a larger group for dinner. The ambience of this place is great. Dark paneled wood walls, piano player, green leather seats. Sort of like a speakeasy. Our server Jackie was amazing and funny. That's where all the positive ends. First thing, you can't order the burger anywhere but the bar. When I asked why, Jackie suggested I fill out a comment card, as if talking to someone or pleasing a customer was a foreign concept. The dinner menu is small and expensive. They don't have many common brands of liquor. I had half a plate of fat and gristle from my bland ribeye. Simply unimpressive."

  • "The Big 4 has a very old school, dark, clubby (like a Gentleman's Club or steak house) type of atmosphere, and everyone was very friendly. There was a piano player in the lounge, and it was loud so we chose to be seated at a corner table in the back. Very nice. The service was very good, prompt but not intrusive. The menu is pretty standard.....steaks, pork chops, chicken, with one vegetarian pasta and a seafood stew. My wife chose the seafood stew, which was a generous portion and lots of different seafood, all cooked correctly but it could have used some more seasoning or a little spice. I had the pork chop, which was huge and pretty tender, and was still tasty. "Good but not a wow" is an accurate summary of our opinion"

  • "Although we both enjoyed our meals, I ordered a pork chop that was supposed to be stuffed with cheese, but unfortunately the cow was on vacation that night, so my chop wasn't the "cheesy" meal I was expecting. My wife ordered the roasted chicken that was very flavorful, if you like salt as a spice. Both entrees were still pretty good, and our server Jullie compensated the pork chop mishap by offering a complimentary desert that was delicious. Chocolate cake with caramel ice cream, and figs with cheese was a great finish to an average meal. We both have eaten there in the past, and the food has always been excellent, so we will be returning in the future. Great theatre district stop, with a fun bar and a nice atmosphere."

  • "If you want to know the "Real" S.F. - have dinner at the Big Four. It is one of the last, great restaurants in the City by the Bay that has retained San Francisco's spirit. Prices are very reasonable by today's standards and I think the food is far superior than what you pay. If you want a late night nightcap, the bar is comfortable, inviting, romantic and fun all at the same time. You will see lots of locals and hear some very good piano"

  • "We had breakfast / Brunch at Big 4. The food was good, the menu was interesting. Great Bloody Mary's with incredible garnish. But it seems that things really do not get rolling there until about 11:30. They are really set up more for dinner than brunch. They were a little under staffed but the one's that were there were very well trained and delightful ( When you could grab one, they were stretched pretty thin in this enormous restaurant."

  • "Big 4 was such a treat! We visited the City and wanted to dine somewhere different than our "typical" spots. Big 4 is at the top of Nob Hill and not "touristy". Located at a gorgeous hotel, the restaurant was beautiful and on the quiet side-but not uncomfortably quiet. The food was absolutely amazing and the service was equally as good. Our server, Ron, was so informative - of not only the food but the history of the restaurant. It was really fun to learn all about the Big 4! I had the pork chop which was juicy and flavorful-best chop EVER! My bf had the filet which was also delish....but my favorite thing was the mushroom en croute. Oh. My. Gosh. To die for! Although a tad on the pricy side-I can't wait to go back on our next visit!!"

  • "From the previous reviews, I read this place was great, and TRENDY. I wanted a good meal for an anniversary dinner in SF. This place is NOT trendy, very old school (think old school steak house, X 5). The menu was very old school, but solid. Why the high rating? Service was great. I booked on Open Table, made a note this was our anniversary dinner. They greeted us nicely, and poured us two glasses of prosecco to start us off, OTH. Unfortunately, we had already realized this was not where we wanted to be for the night, so we told them that we were sorry, but wanted to leave and pay for the drinks. They refused, stating the drinks were complementary, and they hoped we would come back another night! Great service, and they didn't miss a beat."

  • "I had previously had a drink at the lounge and thought the relatively small and quiet restaurant looked appealing but possibly expensive. The restaurant is very appealing and only moderately expensive by most big city standards. The waitress was attentive but a bit flip, which is not surprising for San Francisco. The cocktails were excellent. Best Sazerac I've had since New Orleans. The appetizers were delicious. Old school steak tartare with a quail egg on top and new school fried artichokes went very well with each other. My lamb shank was very good but not the best I have had. My dinner partner's pasta was also very good but not great. The ambience is very old school and beautiful. I will definitely return."

  • "Not my first time in this established SF fine restaurant. But first time since they have re-opened under new management. The menu is significantly simplified. The wine list is still very impressive. The service was top drawer and the over-all ambiance was as good as ever. This is a great intimate setting, feels and look rich. The bar is also small and cozy, thank God they still have the same bartender, he is an SF treasure and can make anything. Light piano music played. The food was very good but I didn't feel it was anything to rave about, just very good and well presented. The service, bar and feel make this place very memorable."

  • "Unflexible in adding or deleting anything from the menu items, such as adding a vegetable to a dish or deleting a sauce on the fish. My friend aked for Halibut with no sauce but it came with the sauce. He also asked to add a vegetable to his main course and the waiter stated the chef is not flexible on altering dishes."

  • "Food was average and plain with no style or focus. Very average hotel food disguised as Neo-American , which is a change from previous visits. Service by the whole serving staff was slow to absent. Server took a 30 minute break during our dinner and didn't get reliable coverage, which seemed like a team failure. Among the many service miss-steps, entree plates not cleared until after almost 20 minutes after finishing, more than once the server asked us to move our chairs because she didn't have enough room, and she didn't the table were to close."

  • "The new owners of the Hotel wisely did not mess with the look and feel of this classic place. Menu has been refreshed. I had a wonderful pasta in a lemon asperagus sauce. My wife loved her half chicken. Moist and tender. They even have the chicken pot pie on Tuesday."

  • "On Nob Hill at the Scarlet Huntington Hotel. A truly "old San Francisco" experience. Just remodeled but they have retained the original ambience and exquisite décor. The food is top notch (halibut melts in your mouth) and we went back twice, taking friends with us the second time. And the service is just as excellent as the food. We had two different servers and both provided us with just the right amount of attention and help without any of the off-putting "stuffiness" that one often finds at fine restaurants. Really cannot recommend this place highly enough."

  • "I was blown away by how much I enjoyed our dinner at the Big Four. My parents were staying at the Huntington Hotel during their visit, and I thought it would be fun to go to the Big Four (as it's so traditional). The scene was really fun, and I have to say, my filet mignon was one of the best I've ever had. The atmosphere is classic SF, and I'll definitely be going back to the bar again soon. After being in SF for 20 years, I can't believe it's taken me this long to discover it (they apparently just re-did it earlier this year, so if you went before, it would be worth another try). I highly, highly recommend it!"

  • "New owners haven't changed the look of this place, thank goodness. The menu is very simple and in many ways a flashback to the 19th century. Go there and pretend there's a Gibson Girl sitting on the banquet next to you. Have a martini, listen to the piano, murmur pleasantries throughout the meal, shade your eyes from the bright lights and then go home, replete."

  • "The service at Big 4 was appalling. We were made to feel unwelcome and the service for most of the meal was non existent. The restaurant recognised this towards the end of our stay and tried to remedy the situation by offering us free deserts and a free bottle of wine but by that time the damage had been done. I will never eat there again and I will strongly recommend friends and business colleagues not to visit as well. Notwithstanding the food when it arrived was good but completely ruined by the poor service experience. By the time my food arrived my appetite has gone."

  • "Having previously come to the Big Four to celebrate my fiance's law school graduation 2 years' previous, I was excited to come back this past Sunday night. However apparently the hotel and restaurant have recently changed hands, and this has changed things in terms of the menu. They used to have Elk chops that were amazing, but apparently no longer. Nor the well reviewed bread pudding. I had the lamb shoulder, which was good, served with a vegetable ragout, and fava beans. Others at our table had the ny steak, the sand dabs, and the pork chop. Everything was good, but it didn't have the wow-factor that I had experienced previously. The wait staff were attentive, and the ambiance is great. I hope they can bring it back to it's former glory."

Why serve sand dabs when everyone in San Francisco likes them and they have to be de-boned at the table and are not as good as Sam's restaurant by any stretch of the imagination. And, the waiter did not know how to de-bone them? Never saw him again and we had to wait 1/2 an hour before anyone took our payment? What a disappointment."

  • "During my mom's recent visit, a friend and I took her to dinner at the Big 4 on 5.22 Thursday. We had drinks and the deviled eggs appetizer in the bar; the eggs had no flavor, and we had to ask a hostess 3 different times for our cocktail waitress to come over. At dinner, the appetizers (artichokes, olives) were great. Our waitress asked if we wanted bread; when we said yes, we were each given 1 slice, instead of a plate of bread. We ordered the chicken, sand dabs and steak. The chicken was fine, but there was little meat on the sand dabs and the steak was like shoe leather - mom should have sent it back but didn't want to ruin our meals by speaking up. Dessert - a tiny, overly sweet sundae. All in all, a VERY disappointing meal."
