A word from Bida Manda Restaurant and Bar
Right in the heart of downtown Raleigh, Bida Manda is a thoughtful and sharp gathering place celebrating the diverse food and culture of Laos. Bida Manda is one of the very first Laotian restaurants in the US. Sanskrit for father and mother, we name the restaurant Bida Manda as our way of honoring our parents in Laos who taught us everything we know about food, hospitality, and the power it has in bringing people together.

Our parents' recipes are the inspiration for our menu. Every dish on our menu is exactly what we grew up eating. They are the kind of dishes you might find on the street corners of Luang Prabang and at a Laotian home.

Come in and go away with us on sensational culinary journey to Laos.

  • "Bida Manda serves an amazing assortment of Laotian, the best of Asian influences. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable about the food, ingredients and what goes into making the dishes as they are about the wine. Everyone is friendly and enthusiastic, and like most of Raleigh's awesome restaurants it gets full."

  • "Flavor explosion. Expertly prepared. We ordered two Green Papaya "salads" as main courses - don't be fooled by the word Salad. It's not what you think. The pork green papaya was best. We also ordered the shrimp herb salad, which is a salad and it's amazing. I would highly recommend making reservations well in advance. The dining area fills ups very quickly."

  • "We had such a great time at Bida Manda. Our first experience and we will definitely be back. When you walk in the aroma immediately makes you want to eat. Our server was extremely knowledgeable and gave terrific guidance. The lettuce wraps are not to be missed and one of the best dishes in Raleigh. Perfect way to begin our meal. My husband can't stop raving about the chicken curry. I loved the cashew ginger chicken. The sauce had just a hint of heat. We cannot wait for our second time."

  • "The waiters and owners are very attentive. You will not be familiar with the dishes, so let the waiter explain them and just go with what feels right. The food is of such high quality that you will not likely be disappointed."

  • "This is our 5th experience at Bida Manda. The papaya salad is sublime. My husband and I crave it! If you're in the Raleigh area or visiting the area this is one restaurant NOT TO MISS! Billy Joel visited Bida Manda when he was in town for a concert. He absolutely loved it too!"

  • "This was our first time at this restaurant and won't our last. We wanted to try something different and this definitely was. The story on the menu of how the restaurant came to be, from family recipes from Laos, including photo was interesting. The wait staff was very knowledgeable and helpful in describing dishes and giving suggestions. Everything we had was great, from the crab cake appetizer to the unusual purple rice pudding with coconut sauce. I had salmon which was succulent and not overcooked. My husband chose chicken curry which was spicy, but not overly so. Although we didn't have alcohol, the selection was quite varied and extensive. It was a memorable dining experience."

  • "Had an amazing night with my friends! Bida Manda was easily able to accommodate our group and looked like it could handle larger parties (8-10ppl). I had the green papaya salad and a basil thai sour-- which was simply delicious. Can't wait to make it back to Raleigh to return for more :)"

  • "I took my wife for dinner on her birthday and it was a great experience. I knew she wanted to go there because she heard good things about this place and she was not kidding. We order sangria which was such a refreshing drink to start and then we ordered couple appetizers: wraps, so good, to die for and also the sushi roll and it was amazing. We both ordered dinner,I had the lamb and I will oreder that again and again and my wife ordered the special feature of the night and we wish they will add it to the menu. No doubt we will be back for another good time and we might go back again after that. If you are having a hard time to decide where to go for your next date night, this place will be a good one even if is your first time there."

  • "Bida Manda is one of my favorite restaurants. The owners and servers are genuinely interested in the patron's dining experience and the food is really prepared with affection. On this occasion there was a very large large and loud party. It was unpleasant to be in the restaurant with them. The server had to get their attention by whistling shrilly. That was also unpleasant. Despite the rude group, I will return to Bida Manda at every opportunity."

  • "Popular place, and for good reasons. Reservation at either 5:30pm or 9:30pm; everything in-between was booked chose 5:30. Nice dinner with friends. Tried a couple appetizers, and we all ordered different entrée's so we tried one another's dishes as well. All were delicious. Laotian food tends to be spicy which I LOVE but others not-so-much, so recommendation is to get mild even if you like medium. Generous portions. It's open space but not overly noisy and we could easily understand one another in conversation without ambient noise drowning out our talk or hearing what the table next to us was talking about. Waitstaff was excellent and just the right amount of attentive. Very nice evening, definitely recommend but get reservations."

  • "We love to dine at Bida Manda to celebrate special occasions. Our recent visit (with a party of 8) was to celebrate my sister's birthday. While dining we were recalling which tables we sat at to celebrate various occasions in the past year - our engagement announcement, my mom's birthday, and others. Bida Manda has become more than a restaurant, but an extension of home - a place where we know we will have a truly memorable experience with amazing food, wonderful service, and a spectacular ambience. The surprise of desserts brought out to the table made for the perfect end to our dining experience. Thanks Bida Manda!"

  • "A co-worker had been raving about the food as he goes often for lunch because he works downtown, and figuring as I live downtown I felt I should FINALLY make my way there. I'm a huge Asian food fan and had a hard time choosing (because I wanted EVERYTHING) but that just gives me incentive to go back. I chose the Green Papaya Salad w/ Duck and it was quite amazing...could have it every week :)"

  • "I took my wife here for her birthday even with the craziness of St. Pat's day festivities we had an amazing time. We arrived about 30 minutes early for our reserveation and were seated right away. Casey our server greeted us immediately and asked if this was our first visit to Bida Manda, we said yes and he took our drink order. When he returned he answered any and all of our questions about the menu. Food and service were amazing my wife was given a complimentary birthday dessert. We will be back again to check out more of the amazing menu."

  • "I've been here twice, and I can tell you it's incredible, but this past Saturday put it over the top. We made the mistake of making reservations on the day of the St. Paddy's day parade. They called us to let us know the street was closed and to allow more time. It was SO LOUD outside that we were worried we had made a huge mistake, but as soon as we got inside it was nice and quiet. The staff is always very attentive and accommodating. The food, per usual, was outstanding. The filet mignon with the papaya salad was seriously the best steak I have ever tasted in my entire life. It was truly incredible. I've had the duck, as well, and while I highly recommend it, the filet is definitely the way to go."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner out. The staff was very friendly. The food was very nice. We especially liked the crunchy rice and lettuce wraps, but also had the pumpkin curry, ribs, and green papaya salad at our table as well as the pork spring rolls. Everyone enjoyed the evening. The Laotian beer was also nice."

  • "I've only been twice - hard to get a reservation, even on a week night. First time I had the Papaya Salad w/ Duck. Second time I had Larb with Duck (and gizzard). Both were wonderful. They clearly do duck right."

  • "Don't let the Laotian theme scare you off. It is their background, but the food far exceeds that domain - more of an Asian fusion. We had a terrific soft shell crab as an appy, and then a lamb curry for me and a chicken/papaya (?) for my wife. They were excellent. Also had a nice cocktail before dinner so they can do that too. The bar quickly became full of those having dinner at the bar. It was my wife's birthday, and they presented her with a complimentary dessert medley, which were all good. Can't believe I've been here for five months before going - don't make the same mistake - go now!. Reservations are a good idea - it is popular - the best dining experience I have had in my five months here."

  • "Bida Manda provides a welcoming atmosphere in which the most delectable foods are served. You can tell the great attention to detail does not stop at the decor. The food is meticulously prepared to stimulate the tastebuds & satisfy even the hungriest crowd. It is so delicious that it would be a sin to leave any on the plate. The amount of food served is abundant and in beautiful authentic presentations. The staff are warm and receptive to any and all questions and are quick to keep drinks refilled. Due to the size of the restaurant, reservations are recommended."

  • "This was my second time at Bida Manda. For 3 adults we enjoyed 3 appetizers and shared the papaya salad. All was fabulous in presentation and taste. The pre-dinner cocktails are also a must try. It was a lovely evening and we will be back was perfect. We were able to talk and enjoy a very special evening out. Thanks for accommodating us."

  • "The food was good. We had a reservation for 5:30 pm. As soon as I arrived I was asked by the hostess/owner if 7:00 was going to be an issue. I understand that someone was coming in right after us at 7pm, but this was the second time I was asked this prior to coming in for dinner. It really set a negative mood, made us feel rushed, and took away from just enjoying our meal. I had suggested this Bida Manda to two friends that joined me that evening and it was not a good first impression. But the food was good. Duck Larb is good. Our server was nice and very accomodating."

  • "I loved the decor and images from Laos which enhanced the dining experience. Our group enjoyed from the bar a Rosie Smash and wine that was suggested as a pairing to our entrees. We shared Spring Rolls, Crispy Rice Lettuce Wraps & Pork Belly Soup. Our favorites were the lettuce wraps & the Pork Belly Soup was heaven. We all tried different entrees... Green Papaya Salad with Grilled trout the BEST fish ever, Ginger Pork Ribs, Salmon & Pumpkin Curry. The portions were more than ample, the food was excellent both in temperature and presentation. We finished the meal with the Trio Plate: Apricot-tamarind cobbler, coconut custard crisp, and mango sorbet. Service was friendly and well timed. Return visits to try new dishes is guaranteed!"

  • "From the first contact confirming our reservation, the adjustments to several in our large party with dietary restrictions (gluten free and lactose intolerant) to actual dining experience everything was perfectly service-oriented. We joined after our engagement party and were met immediately with a smile and set quickly. The server was knowledgeable, outgoing and accommodating. To a person, we all enjoyed the signature cocktails (my honey old fashion was great), apps (spring rolls a highlight), and entrees (papaya salad and curry the highlights). The name is perfect because it represents their family's legacy (Vansana checked in) feeling like mother and father were welcoming us to share in dinner. Laotian cuisine is my new favorite!"

  • "First time for family of three. Food was outstanding for two of us who had pad Thai with shrimp and larb. Both dishes were spicy and displayed a nice mix of flavors. The larb, however, included pieces of a cabbage like veggie that were too tough to eat. The third diner cannot abide cilantro and requested that it be omitted from her salmon. However it came on the salmon anyway, which she ate around as best she could. Service by young waitress was knowledgeable and pleasant."
