A word from Bida Manda Restaurant and Bar
Right in the heart of downtown Raleigh, Bida Manda is a thoughtful and sharp gathering place celebrating the diverse food and culture of Laos. Bida Manda is one of the very first Laotian restaurants in the US. Sanskrit for father and mother, we name the restaurant Bida Manda as our way of honoring our parents in Laos who taught us everything we know about food, hospitality, and the power it has in bringing people together.

Our parents' recipes are the inspiration for our menu. Every dish on our menu is exactly what we grew up eating. They are the kind of dishes you might find on the street corners of Luang Prabang and at a Laotian home.

Come in and go away with us on sensational culinary journey to Laos.

Diner Reviews
  • "The smaller dining room, bamboo-lined walls, and candlelit tables provide a relaxed but upscale atmosphere, with appropriate lighting levels for the selection of unique dishes (you want to see what you're eating!). The service is friendly and helpful. The selection of appetizers and dishes was just large enough to appeal to a variety of palates without being overwhelming, given that each dish, with the exception a few cultural "staples", is a new experience to most. The Pad Thai and chicken curry were excellent. The bar menu was varied, but focused on rum and tequila drinks. Wines were reasonably priced. While the price was a bit higher than most DTRaleigh restaurants ($15-$20), Bida Manda goes the extra distance that most places won't."

  • "I'm usually not one to write reviews, but our visit to this restaurant was such a wonderful experience I had to give feedback. We started our meal with the Crispy Rice Lettuce Wraps.....OMG....so delicious!! For my main course, I had Green Papaya Salad with grilled sea bass.....absolutely delectable. And then to top it all off, it was my birthday :-) and the server brought out a complimentary 'trio plate' of desserts. Needless to say, the desserts, like the other dishes did not disappoint either. I will go back again. Service was wonderful, food was superb and the decor of the restaurant...A+. Check it out for yourself."

  • "Food was outstanding as was the service. Noise level was very high. Very low light as we had use our flashlights on our smart phones to read the menu."

  • "Bida Manda is one of those places that fits every purpose: special event, business lunch, out of town guests, just hungry, etc. The food is excellent but the service and sense of welcome set it apart. Vansana and Vanvisa truly have created an oasis of quality and hospitality."

  • "We have been to Bida Manda several times to celebrate special occasions and each time the service has been excellent, with friendly and attentive wait staff as well as timely delivery of food. The appetizers, entrees and desserts are presented attractively and provide more than adequate amounts of food. The space is warm and festive with unusual decorations and always fresh flowers. The whole baked fish makes a spectacular entree. The trio of desserts gives you choices and they are all light and not too filling."

  • "Found this with a simple Google search in GMaps while hovering over Raleigh. Good recommendation and a great payoff. Loved it."

  • "Everything was great, except my wife and I could not converse because of the high noise level. Food, service were superb, just to much noise, possibly because it was Monday night(according to waiter)."

  • "The food was quite good and our waiter took very good care of us. However, cleanliness was a problem: the menus were torn, frazzled, and dirty; the floors were dirty; and the bathrooms, especially the ladies' room, were disgusting."

  • "Hands down. The food is incredible. Great owner and staff. Amazing experience."

  • "my husband and i have not had a chance to return to bida manda for several months. this visit was as seamless and delicious as the last. we especially appreciated the courteous, always-on-it service, the nice size of their cocktails, generous entree portions and still reasonable prices. our favorite dishes are the salmon and the carmelized pork ribs. overall, a downtown gem."

  • "Big variety for gluten free eating. We had lettuce wraps, sea bass (daily special), and the chicken curry. For dessert we had the macaroons, which were huge."

  • "The sausage appetizer was excellent - not greasy at all and very tasty; I did not share! I also had the lettuce wrap which was awesome! My companions enjoyed the pork belly soup and the sea bass. I am definitely looking forward to returning!"

  • "I got the papaya salad and it was delicious. A little spicy, which I hadn't prepared myself for, but still really tasty. Atmosphere was wonderful. I made a reservation and glad I did because there was a steady flow of people coming in the whole time."

  • "Food was good but my expectations were high and it was not up to them. staff was very friendly. It was very busy and a little to loud for my taste."

  • "Went to Bida Manda for an anniversary dinner and was amazed by the food, service, and environment. Both our entrees were incredible (especially the basil beef) and the restaurant really helped make a special occasion outstanding."

  • "I've been to Bida Manda three times for lunch and each time our service and food was impeccable. Most recently, I went there with 9 other colleagues, and we were seated immediately and our server was excellent (no easy feat with 10 people!). Try the papaya salad with steak! The pad thai also looked amazing. If you've never tried thai tea, definitely try it with a spicier dish."

  • "Great food, lively atmosphere! Service was attentive and knowledgeable. The pad thai is my favorite!"

  • "been to bida manda several times since it opened & I have never been disappointed. the duck larb was fantastic but my favorite is the pork belly soup. house made sausage is also a must."

  • "Truly one of the best restaurants in downtown Raleigh! The food is amazing, the presentation, creativity and freshness will not disappoint. Wait staff are always attentive and helpful. A really unique and special place to dine!"

  • "This food is not to be missed! Definitely try the crispy rice lettuce wraps for an appetizer! Drinks were also phenomenal!!! I had the summer sangria and it was light and a little sweet, the perfect combination to something a little spicy. Service was excellent and the ambiance was very calm but there was a good crowd there."

  • "Went for dinner. Lighting insufficient to read the menu. Several tables, including ours, using phones to read it. Consider increasing table lighting or supply mini flashlights."

  • "Fourth visit and it just gets better! Charming and knowledgable staff who knows the menu well. Green papaya salad with duck is heavenly. Share an order of the crispy rice lettuce and crispy spring rolls (pork). Trio for dessert is just enough for two."

  • "This is my favorite restaurant in raleigh. The decor is beautiful, the food is always delicious with interesting ideas and flavors. Only gave it a 4 instead if a 5 this time because if a few things: I tried to make a reservation for 4 instead if two on open table to invite friends, wouldn't let me, then we were seated at a 4 top. The server also rushed us quite a bit. I know it's a busy restaurant, but asking if he can clear my plate when I have a fork to my mouth is not cool in any restaurant. We had the crispy rice rolls for an appetizer, yummy. We shared two entrees.... Pork belly soup (best entree there). And the shrimp and bacon crepe, was a first and last, there is a sauce they use that gives the inside a mushy texture."

  • "Great selection, just the right description on the menu to make a specific choice, and awesome food that did NOT disappoint! Easy parking during the week, and great place to stroll after dinner! I really enjoyed it! I'll be back!"

  • "This is Raleigh's only restaurant with really high vibration and a spiritual slant coupled with incredible food and service. A very special restaurant where the staff is actually trained by the owners."

  • "I went here for the first time with 3 other girlfriends. We were clueless on what to order and our waiter was very helpful and descriptive on all the dishes he recommended. We had the most delicious meals and such a wonderful time. The atmosphere was perfect. The owner took the time to make sure everything was good, and told us the story of how Bida Manda came to be. Can't say enough wonderful things about this absolutely amazing restaurant. Will definitely come back!!"

  • "The food was terrific. The dishes were bright, flavorful and different, without being overdone, heavy or excessive. Unlike some other places around town, they really seem to get that "more" does not necessarily mean "better," when it comes to cooking. Very enjoyable. The atmosphere was well-constructed with thoughtful detail. We only had two complaints. First, the hostess seemed to have skipped us in the rotation leaving us to wait another 15 minutes extra and one drink, the strawberry sour, was essentially a sour without any noticeable strawberry to it. Those were minor details compared to our otherwise overwhelmingly positive experience."

  • "Nice restaurant, I like the ambiance but the food is just OK and its real difficult to park nearby."

  • "Creative menu, expertly prepared and seasoned, served by attentive and friendly staff, with owner dropping by from time to time to make sure everything was just right -- makes for perfect night. Try the papaya salad, lettuce wraps, and we really enjoyed the desserts, which were delicate treats. This has become our spot for taking out of town friends when we want to show them the best Raleigh has to offer."

  • "Fantastic, authentic, high quality food. Flavors were spot in. Interesting cocktail list. Fantastic complimentary aperitif and delicous macaroons to top of the meal! Well done!"

  • "A unique and impressive dining experience. Can't wait to go back and try another item on their menu. The service was great and the cocktails even better."

  • "We have been hearing nothing but good things and were excited to try this restaurant. The service and atmosphere were great, but the food was only so-so. About half of the dishes we ordered were okay, but several were just not very good. With so many great restaurants in the Triangle, I wouldn't recommend this one."

  • "Had soft shelled crabs, ribs and green papaya with duck. All were excellent. Their margaritas are some of the best in town."
