A word from Bida Manda Restaurant and Bar
Right in the heart of downtown Raleigh, Bida Manda is a thoughtful and sharp gathering place celebrating the diverse food and culture of Laos. Bida Manda is one of the very first Laotian restaurants in the US. Sanskrit for father and mother, we name the restaurant Bida Manda as our way of honoring our parents in Laos who taught us everything we know about food, hospitality, and the power it has in bringing people together.

Our parents' recipes are the inspiration for our menu. Every dish on our menu is exactly what we grew up eating. They are the kind of dishes you might find on the street corners of Luang Prabang and at a Laotian home.

Come in and go away with us on sensational culinary journey to Laos.

I loved the food. I had the Tom ka gai soup which had the right amount heat to offset the richness of the coconut and the whole fish special which was lightly fried with an amazing sauce. We shared the trio for desert. All elements were good and the apricot tamarind cobbler was exceptional. We couldn't linger as my friend had a child to pick up later in the night, and the waitress got us in and out in 1 1/4 hours with three courses even though the restaurant was completely full and a large table had been seated just before us. The only down side is that it was extremely noisy -to the point where we were having trouble hearing each other talk. I will definitely go this restaurant again.

Bida Manda is without a doubt mine and my husband's favorite restaurant in Raleigh. The service and the food always exceed expectations. They never hesitate to provide you with dessert on the house for a special occasion, which I think is something truly special and really adds to your experience with them. I always recommend Bida Manda to my friends and family when visiting Raleigh.

I don't recall our waiter's name, but he went out of his way to find an umbrella for us. We had left ours in the car, and would have walked back in the pouring rain otherwise. We also went with his recommendations for appetizers and entrees, and were not disappointed!

This is one of the only true asian cuisine places you will find here, and surely the only laotian cuisine restaurant. The food is EXCELLENT, I honestly don't know what to recommend since I liked everything so far! The first time I ate there, i felt like 6 years ago, in Laos, where i was eating some local food in a small town and wondering why i never find something like this in the US... What a great restaurant!

I would have never picked a laotian restaraunt as a place to try, but this place was awesome. I had no idea what to order so I asked both the hostess and waiter and both recommended the pork belly soup and green papaya salad. We went with it and enjoyed everything about the dinner - service, quality, etc. I'll be back.

This restaurant was recommended by a friend. There were 5 women in our group. None of us had ever eaten here. The menu had many choices - Laotian, Vietnamese, Thai. Wonderful new things to try. Service was the best. The waiter explained in detail the items on the menu that he knew we were not familiar with. We shared our entrees and agreed that the food was indeed very good. The atmosphere is very nice. It was quiet enough that we could talk without any problem hearing each other. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

This restaurant has the best staff we have encountered in a long time. Courteous, helpful, and cheerful. The food is Laotian, which is a combination of Thai and Vietnamese. Very creative and inventive. Some dishes are pre-Colonial, and others show the definite influence of the French who colonized Laos. The ambiance is casual, which makes for a very relaxed experience, and the excellent staff makes it even more so. Great job by all, and congratulations to the young Laotian brother and sister that own the place. Please keep it up.

This was my second time eating here. I would say this is probably one of my favorite restaurants in Raleigh. It is unique and the atmosphere is superb. My only compliant this time would be our service. We were a group of 5 and although it was a Friday night our waitress seemed very not with it. We asked her simple questions of which she didn't know the answer to and then our drinks sat empty for about 15 minutes. At that point our food came and we asked the person who dropped off our food to get us another round and they referred us to our waitress. I find it hard that a restaurant of such caliber wouldn't have as equally exceptional waitresses.

I came of dining age in San Francisco, then Berkeley, almost 30 years. My standards border on the ridiculous and Bida Manda more than meets them. I consider it a North Carolina gem, worth finding reasons to get yourself to Raleigh. The owners are delightful, warm and welcoming, the staff equally so, no pretension, just outstanding service, the environment is comfortable, and the food is staggering in its accomplishment and refinement. I feel myself at their mother's table, a seat I feel privileged to fill for a night, again and again and again and ...

Based on reviews on TripAdvisor, we booked several nights in advance for Bida Manda. From the first moment we walked through the door, the service was extraordinary - kiind, informative, solicituous, but not too much. Our waitress could not have been more helpful. Then, we had the pleasure of chatting to the owner, who clearly brings much love and committment to all aspects of this restaurant. We really were so impressed. Our dinner was a delight to the senses - amazing flavors and aromas, and every course was delicious. This is a very special restaurant that will not blow your budget - make sure you make time to enjoy this experience in downtown Raleigh !

I recently visited Bida for a date and what a fantastic experience. I arrived with flowers for my date and the host asked if there was a special occasion (it was our third date). The hosts gave us a prime table, took the initiative to bring a vas to the table and were amazing overall. The food was spectacular as usual. As I'm a chef myself I appreciate the thought into the presentation of the food. Casey our server was knowledgeable of all aspects of the menu and very personable. I just don't get the reviews for restaurants here. Glowing reviews for mediocre. This place was nice. The food was good but for it to be rated top 10? I mean please. It's good food. The location is good. It's not sexy, sultry, chic, upscale, kid friendly (menu options), nor beautiful. It's just nice. I'm not a jeans kinda gal but I'd throw on a pair for this place and go with a gal pal or on a fourth date. This isn't for kids, first date, or sexy hip scene. It's just a nice place to taste something different from the norm. Not amazing food. Not bad either. Just nice.

Took a date here for her birthday, as this is a little nicer than standard grad student budget food, and it did not disappoint. It was the first time for both of us, and we're now ready to make it a staple. The ambiance was fine, and the service was excellent, but the food was the star. We split the Crispy Rice Lettuce Wraps, which were absolutely amazing. If I worked in downtown Raleigh, I might have them for lunch every day--this from a red meat aficionado who almost never orders vegetarian wraps. Our waitress advised us that the Crispy Pork Belly Soup was filling enough to split, so we split it, and it was also delicious. And filling. Would highly recommend. Dessert was sticky rice w/mango, which was a bit sweet for me, but she liked it.

Excellent service, delicious appetizers, a bit too loud so it is hard to have a conversation with a group, some dishes better than others. A couple of people in our party were very disappointed by their meal considering the cost and said that they would go back for the appetizers but not necessarily to eat a main course. Others at our table enjoyed their choice for dinner.

So the first thing I must address is the LACK of noise. I was a bit put off about the reviews of noise levels in this restaurant but I found it to be as loud as it should be on a Saturday night at 7 pm in any bustling business. What the reviews did get right though, is how good the food is. I would recommend the Green Papaya Duck, the Lettuce Wraps, the Pork Ribs and the Whole Fish. The only slight disappointment was the Curried Chicken. Everything was otherwise wonderful, including the service. Great job Bida Manda!
