A word from Bida Manda Restaurant and Bar
Right in the heart of downtown Raleigh, Bida Manda is a thoughtful and sharp gathering place celebrating the diverse food and culture of Laos. Bida Manda is one of the very first Laotian restaurants in the US. Sanskrit for father and mother, we name the restaurant Bida Manda as our way of honoring our parents in Laos who taught us everything we know about food, hospitality, and the power it has in bringing people together.

Our parents' recipes are the inspiration for our menu. Every dish on our menu is exactly what we grew up eating. They are the kind of dishes you might find on the street corners of Luang Prabang and at a Laotian home.

Come in and go away with us on sensational culinary journey to Laos.

What a surprise to find such a good restaurant in Raleigh, where the food is in general bad. They have fresh whole fish, and the fish is simply great! I will go there every time I come to Raleigh and I come there at least 3-4 times a year.

You'll want to be sure to make a reservation. We tried to walk there several times and it was like an hour and a half wait, so we never bothered. Finally thought ahead enough to make a reservation, and it actually was worth the wait. Everything was super tasty and I actually liked that the portions weren't gigantic. Kind of pricey, but the food really did make up for it. Service was fine.

We tried Bida Manda for the first time last weekend and it was really wonderful. Our server, Cliff, was attentive and knowledgeable, and the food was delicious. We tried the lettuce wraps appetizer, the pork belly soup entree, the green papaya entree and the dessert trio. Everything was beautifully presented and tasted great. We like spicy food, and some of the dishes had a nice kick, but nothing overpowering. We will definitely be back.

This was our second visit and it was somewhat better. We had the pork belly soup again, split, because it is just too much - but delicious! Last time my husband had the soft shell crabs and didn't feel they were fresh, this time he had ribs and I had the papaya salad with chicken. Very tasty. The coffee was fresh and good - dessert a delight! The staff is very cordial and the atmosphere is very pleasant. It is Laotian food but I think you can control the spice level. Do try!

This was my first time at Bida Manda. We went with friends who go regularly and had a great time. Food and service were excellent. Wine recommendation was excellent. We have heard about this restaurant for a long time, but really had no clear expectations since we were not familiar with Laotian food. It was fabulous! Our server was one of the best waiters we've ever had. He spent just enough time with us describing the entrees without being overbearing. Everything we ordered was tasty and as advertised. Can't wait to go back to try some more!

Bida Manda is consistently my favorite restaurant in town! Fresh ingredients that are thoughtfully prepared and presented give each dish a wonderfully exciting flavor profile. Owners Van and Vanvisa are so warm and welcoming, making each visitor feel like they're being invited into a Laotian home. Ambiance is intimate and romantic, and it's always full which gives a night out at Bida a fun energy. Cocktails are creative and always delicious too. The appetizer soup also makes a great late night snack if you stop in later in the evening. I recommend to everyone I know!

I dined here solo and sat at the bar. Reservations are a must as I could not get in the previous night. The atmosphere is not for those who want a quiet place. The bar seating is not very comfortable and the seats are too close but the bartender staff are fantastic. I had a basil stir fry, which had perfectly cooked, tender beef. The summer rolls were an excellent, light appetizer. The cocktail selection is eclectic and interesting. Downtown location, and a bit of a challenge for parking.

We dined at Bida Manda for my wife's birthday. Reservation process and seating went very smoothly. We were seated at a corner table; less actively noisy than the rest. Service was attentive and timely. Courses and beverage service were brought and cleared on time, with energy and enthusiasm (if not very inconspicuously). Entrees (chicken curry, pho lao and ginger ribs) were all well prepared and appropriately spiced. A full range of condiments was provided. The small plate of desserts brought to honor the birthday were all quite distinctive, making us wish we had room for a full desserts. Ambience is attractive. Location is in historic Moore Square in downtown Raleigh, convenient to other attractions.

Every bite that entered my mouth during this meal was delicious and satisfying. We ordered the Crispy Spring Rolls as an appetizer, and I have to admit they were the best I've ever had, and I grew up eating homemade spring rolls in a Vietnamese household. My entree was the Crispy Pork Belly Soup, which was a perfectly balanced bowl of wonderful. The coconut broth was flavorful without being overpowering, the pork belly added a nice crispy contrast, and there was a substantial portion of noodles and ground pork. Service-wise, our server was available without being overbearing. The ambiance was pleasant; there was an elevated noise level, but it wasn't too loud. The decor was very nice. Overall excellent dining experience.

Had a great dinner at Bida Manda; outstanding service, delicious food and we didn't feel rushed at all. Our server was attentive yet gave us space and time to enjoy each part of the meal and our night! The Papaya Salad is a must, and the filet mignon was cooked perfectly - better than any steak I've gotten at Angus Barn or Ruths Chris. Perfect for a date night or special occasion, and a unique cocktail selection and atmosphere.

Out for a dinner with friends wanting something unusual and fresh. The appetizers were all very good - especially the unique flavors of the Sweet chilli chicken wings. The soft shell crabs (3) were a hit and the vegetarian spring rools - fresh and a good contrast to the chicken wings. Entrees: The 'Special' Pumpkin curry - reported flavorful and satisfying curried chicken excellent; two takers for the saffrpm crepes which were large and delicate and ample. The waitress was very knowledgeable and on target in her recommendations. A little mix up on the delivery service. Our only frustrations was having to strain our voices to hear our conversation. Loud enough to cost a star. $146.00 for four people which included 2 glasses of wine.

From the moment we walked in to the time we were walking out, we were met with great service throughout our experience here. Yes, it was an experience. The owners have really reflected their culture through the environment, seasonal food and beverage menu, as well as the service that is provided. Our waiter was phenomenol and personable, he really helped guide our decisions and explained the dishes and even how to eat them appropriately (trust your waiter even if you aren't familiar with the foods!). The serving sizes were appropriate to price but did not leave me feeling overstuffed. The food was plentiful, filling, yet light. I fully recommend embracing a 3-course experience b/c it is worth it!

I loved the food. I had the Tom ka gai soup which had the right amount heat to offset the richness of the coconut and the whole fish special which was lightly fried with an amazing sauce. We shared the trio for desert. All elements were good and the apricot tamarind cobbler was exceptional. We couldn't linger as my friend had a child to pick up later in the night, and the waitress got us in and out in 1 1/4 hours with three courses even though the restaurant was completely full and a large table had been seated just before us. The only down side is that it was extremely noisy -to the point where we were having trouble hearing each other talk. I will definitely go this restaurant again.
