Diner Reviews
  • "My friend suggested to go to this place because it was his favorite food in San Diego when he lived here. The food was great; however, the reasturant was not. There were flies all over the place. They gave us the option to move but that didn't help. I saw other tables slapping the air so I wasnt the only one. I expected some sort of reduction on the bill and there was no compensation at all. I will pretty much tellj everyone I know to never go here."

  • "Traveling the globe, I don't think to order Lasagne at a restaurant. But, it was a nice alternative. It was a bit pricey, yet it should be expected in the Gas Lamp."

  • "Food was very ordinary. Not bad, but not great either."

  • "We had an excellent meal here. I live in Italy and can vouch for the authenticity of the cuisine, although the menu is more creative than you would find in an Italian restaurant and is more accommodating of vegans and those on a gluten-free diet. The food is fresh and creative and the service is very professional. This is a good option for a group with diverse tastes as there is something on the menu for everyone. It is expensive but the price is fair considering the quality, ambiance and service of the restaurant."

  • "Went on short notice. Took our 4 year old and was treated beautifully by the staff. Food was delicious and no pressure. We had Lora of breaks due to our girl but the kitchen was great about timing the pales. Let the waiter choose a charcuterie selection (delicious) and we popped a Piedmont Sangiovese from there wonderful selection."

  • "Consistently have great service and wonderful meal at BICE. This is one of our tops in San Diego. Having travelled extensively in Europe, and particularly Italy, we appreciate the the focus on high quality ingredients and preparations. Love the cheese bar! Had the lobster risotto and the gnocchi. Risotto was a bit heavy on the burrata, but simple red sauce was lovely. Gnocchi had lovely sauce and excellent texture. Prices are high, but not as compared to other restaurants in the Gaslamp that have far inferior service and preparations. Simply one of our faves."

  • "Had a 6:30pm reservation and were seated promptly. Unfortunately it was at the height of dinner hour and they must have been short a waiter or two, because even though we did get water and Paolo (dining room concierge) took our wine order, we ended up sitting for 20 minutes and then had to ask for bread, (which had a variety of 3 different kinds of bread with an olive oil, balsamic and marscapone dip) He then ended up taking our order. Having said that, the food was absolutely delicious (saffron risotto w/shrimp, mushroom ravioli, lasagna, and a fish dish to name a few). All the desserts (tiramisu, coconut pane cotta, and a few others) were incredible. It's definitely a place to dine and the food alone is worth a few inconveniences."

  • "My in-laws brought my wife and I here for my wife's birthday, and it couldn't have been more perfect. Marco Zannoni was a true professional, providing exceptional service and making our dining experience 5-star. All of the food tasted fantastic, and for a very moderate to reasonable price-scale for the quality received. The 7-cheese plate was tremendous, fresh, and vibrant. I would definitely recommend this restaurant, and will be returning as well."

  • "Our salads were tasty and fresh. The perfect size. Dinners were delectable. Scallops were one entry and baked pasta with selections from the sea. We skipped desert"

  • "Unassuming looking place from front conceals a wonderful restaurant inside. Fabulous service, very good food, great wine. Server recommended a "best wine for the price" that did not disappoint. Highly recommend."

  • "This was my 2nd time at Bice. I have been to excellent Italian restaurants coast to coast and in Italy and this is one of my favorites. The quality of ingredients is superb - the cheeses, the breads, the kale salad, the fresh pasta! The service is extraordinary as well -extremely attentive and knowledgeable with vibrant personality. The only negative is the loud noise level when the restaurant is full. Still, that did not keep me from luxuriating in the divine tastes. Thanks Bice for bringing me some of my longed for, authentic Italian delights."

  • "I went to Bice with a friend hoping for an extraordinary meal out. The food was fresh and had good flavor, but was not anything extraordinary. Even with a reservation, we were placed at a small table hidden away in the back corner where are waitor seemed to forget about us. After a half hour of no attention, I went seeking his attention to get our bill. If you want a restaurant that Has impeccable service, no pretension, and makes you feel welcome; this is not a good choice."

  • "I took a date there on a Thursday night. The waiter was incredibly attentive at the beginning of the night. He came back to the table 3 times before we'd even opened the menus. The wine selection was pretty decent, there were four pages. To be honest, I normally just point at something and hope for the best. My date and I both ate specials. I had a beef and veal lasagna she had a spicy italian sausage rigatoni. Both meals were tasty. Overall it was a good experience. The one drawback was the noise level. It increased steadily throughout the night until we couldn't hear each other across our table."

  • "I wish I had written this review when details were fresh in my mind. We dined here with another couple about a month ago. Our server was tops. I remember the ravioli appetizer was great, as well as the charcuterie. The disappointment came when our seafood entree arrived. Fish special was not so special. Very dry. If there is a fish special, it better be good. Server was very apologetic and brought complementary dessert. It was my husband's b'day so perhaps dessert would have been comped anyway?"

  • "We had a party of 10 and enjoyed the cheese plate and honey for starters. But 4 of the 10 entrees were not good. Risotto was way too salty and one of the pasta dishes was fishy. Other entrees were OK."

  • "We dined at Bice before the theatre and found the restaurant to be exceptional in every way. There was attention to every detail. Stefano was our waiter and was impeccable, with great knowledgeable of the food and wine. Mario's food was delicious We have been to other Bice restaurants in Chicago and New York, this was our first time in San Diego. We will return."

  • "Service superb, food as good as usual. The room was a little noisy, as we had a sports team seated behind us. Once they goy onto their bus, things settled down. The room is still, " live" with little acoustic material, so not the spot for intimate conversations! Service was excellent! Very extensive wine list, you can look through glass into the cellar room, while you dine"

  • "Tucked away in the corner but BICE offers something authentically Italian that is a rarity. Food was very good, service was attentive enough not to be intrusive, the wine list is superb. Offers a formidable breadth of Italian delectable reds. Go for the award winning cheese & honey. The true winner that shine is their homemade pastas and gnocchi. Bravissimo!!!"

  • "If you want a touch of sophistication, in an area devoted to Bars, this is your place. The " Art Deco" glass in the front doors introduces you to a sophisticated dining experience. You enter into the Bar area, which is a little confined, but welcoming. Decor is dark wood. The bar has the obligatory flat screens, but they are not " in your face " The bar menu is extensive. Happy hour 5-7PM Monday through Thursday is recommended"

  • "....and one of the top Italian restaurants in California. Since I'm Italian I get asked all the time who is the best Italian restaurant in San Diego. In a town filled with "Italian" restaurants, this is hands down the best ITALIAN restaurant. Modern Italian with an appreciation for local ingredients at ver high value. Chef Mario tends to visit the floor every night and makes you feel at home. Oh, and did I mention that they have a cheese bar? Chef Francesca rocks the cheese!"

  • "Nice find, the service was great to start but we had a hard time getting the waiters attention to get the bill in the end. We had the caprese salad with fresh burato cheese which was tasty. And a great start they do a truffle oil, balsamic and marscapone cheese nice touch. I had the pork cutlets which were very tasty but slightly over done. The better choice was the beef ravioli, freshly made pasta was cooked to perfection. We had the pistachio made to order cupcake, I loved it, my husband thought it had a bit of a grainy texture which put him off of it. I would recommend this place, one of the best features, is you can see most of the actual dishes on their online menu."

  • "We reserved a table at six pm for a party of six. Two of the guests in our party arrived early and were seated. When the remaining four of us arrived, we were told they couldn't find our reservation. Thankfully they were able to find a table for us and as we were being seated, we noticed our friends were seated at a table. Also, when I phoned the day of the event to confirm our reservation, I was rudely told that the person was not at a computer and was unable to confirm the reservation."

  • "Although the dining room was very loud, it was a Saturday night. Despite the noise level which made it difficult for us to hear each other speak, the food and service were great. Just go there with the understanding that you'll need to shout to hear each other, but I definitely recommend the restaurant and will return!!"

  • "Unfortunately I'm not impressed with the food.. The halibut was overcooked, dry inside accompanied by salty tomato based sauce and the starch I like the least, potatoes. The cioppino-like sauce but lacking in flavor and depth. The prawn in the dish was very good but there was only one. Perhaps I should have chosen one of the pasta dishes... Some of the dishes that arrived for the other diners near us actually looked good. I have to say that ambiance + service were very good. I dined at Bice in Manhattan years ago and was impressed. I also dined at Bice in Montreal but maybe they are not a part of this group since they have changed the name since. Bice in Montreal was outstanding in every way but not this one in San Diego in my opinion."

  • "We had a reservation for six, but that quickly expanded to 13 and the staff did a phenomenal job of accommodating us. The wait staff did an excellent job of ensuring that our experience was top notch. The food was amazing and I cannot say enough about their antipasti and cheese selection. For a very large group it was an excellent setting and the food was delivered in a timely manner. I will definitely be coming back."

  • "BiCE in the San Diego Gaslamp District will not disappoint you in any way. For those not familiar with BiCE, it's in most markets in the US and also has a strong international set of locations. The service we had was impeccable, attentive without being intrusive. The Caprese salad was excellent. My dining companions each had a filet perfectly done while my stuffed chicken breast was a most unusual but tasty presentation. Suitable for business lunches or dinners, we were there with my wife's boss in Valentine's Day evening."

  • "The food was excellent, especially the desserts. The only negative was when waiter stacked dinner plates for removal, and he snapped them from table. The olive oil spread for the bread was sloshed in a 2 foot long trail across the tablecloth. Luckily none was sloshed on us. This marred what was otherwise a fine dining experience and lowered my rating accordingly."

  • "Our experience for my wife's birthday was over the top ! We had a glass of wine at the Bar with Paul and Alex great bartenders !, who were so pleasant and nice ! Stefano our waiter at are table was so professional and nice, you just could not ask for more. This place has so much class. Even Chef Mario came by to say hi to us and to wish my wife Happy Birthday. And the food is off the chart.Their fresh bread is very good. For the main dish, I had the lasagna which was delicious, and my wife had the gnocchi with pesto which she very much enjoyed. Their deserts were awesome. If we could go here every night we would. Thank You Bice Restorante for making my wife's birthday special !"

  • "VERY authentic Italian. Our waiter had an impressive command of the menu and spoke with a legit accent. The prosciutto and mozzarella appetizer was delicious and enough for 5 people. The complimentary bread - three types (rustic, flat and hearty) - were served with a sweet mascarpone and balsamic vinegar. The main dishes and desserts were extremely flavorful, unique, and artistically designed. My guests were impressed - and they are talented foodies."

  • "Dined on Saturday night with a group of nine family and friends. Service was OUTSTANDING. Our waiter was helpful, friendly, fun and very attentive. We had to jam in our meal in about 75 minutes to get to a concert and he kept things moving just right to do that. Cheese plate was interesting and tasty. Salads were fresh, and everyone raved about their entrees. Lobster ravioli, beef and veal lasagna, scallops, the list goes on and on. With a lot of wine it ended up $100 a head including tip, but could have easily been in the $50 a head range if we weren't so thirsty. A great energy in the room as well. Really, can't think of how the whole experience could have been any better."
