Diner Reviews
  • "what a wonderful meal, with seafood prepared like no other! Excellent service and friendly atmosphere throughout."

  • "Service was good, but the food was lacking—very expensive for what it was. I would recommend dining elsewhere unless you're only planning to have a few drinks and appetizers in the outside area."

  • "Lunch selections were plentiful with a large variety of seafood and some enticing specials. The food was well-prepared. We scaled back on our entrees, since the dessert menu looked too good to pass up, but still couldn't finish our dessert choices. The large portions were rich and delicious, although I would have been fine with a smaller portion. The fruit cobbler was especially good."

  • "The food, ambience and our server Josh, made our night extremely enjoyable! Will visit the restaurant each time we visit Williamsburg."

  • "It is a nice restaurant, but nothing outstanding in our opinion."

  • "A delicious option near Colonial Williamsburg. Berret's is known for its seafood and also has a kids' menu. They have a more casual taproom next door, but don't think the restaurant is stuffy. The service is good. We enjoyed the mixed grill and the special in parchment (it was salmon and scallops cooked perfectly with white wine, orzo, tomatoes, herbs). Our second time here and we'll be back."

  • "Parchment wrapped salmon and scallops was outstanding."

  • "We found Berret's through Open Table while searching for a place to dine while travelling home from Virginia Beach. Berret's did not disappoint! The food was delicious and the atmosphere quaint. It's located in a really nice part of Williamsburg with easy parking, lots of shopping nearby, as well as W&M across the street. We will be back!!"

  • "Pass on the oysters in the half shell, we were really diasappointed. Several other local Restaraunts offer better. Otherwise the meal was good."

  • "Excellent service, good steak, and a nice break for dinner on a hot day in Williamsburg. Do no hesitate to go here."

  • "We ate at Barrets two evenings. The first night we had a special occasion and ate in. We had swordfish, which was delicious and well prepared. It is only available certain times of the year. We also had the mahi-mahi which was well prepared and very good. The bar selection of craft beers was interesting. We had a great time. On the next night we ate out on the patio and had the BBQ dinner and shrimp po-boy. They split the BBQ and fries and you couldn't tell they were split. What a feed."

  • "This charming dining establishment in the Merchant's Square area of Colonial Williamsburg is a real gem. Although the menu may be limited and a bit pricey, the quality of food and ambiance more than make up for the expense. The food was excellent, as was the service and attention to service details. You may find this a welcome option outside of the overcrowded, overbooked, and noisy taverns on the main street of the historic area. This would an exceptional location for a special occasion. I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Came in to celebrate my dad's 60th birthday and they did a wonderful job. Accommodated us pushing the resv back 30 min with no fuss. My sister and her friend joined us as a surprise and they sold it! Joshua was an excellent server, made us sweet tea on his own and kept the pita chips coming for our delicious crab dip appetizer. Even brought some unfried for the health conscious. Always enjoy Berret's and this time was no exception!"

  • "They never disappoint. I don't know how they could improve upon what they do & how the customers are treated. It is a treat to eat there!"

  • "We always try to visit Berrets whenever we come to Williamsburg. Food is always top notch. We ate outside this visit and were pleased with the setting and watching the children play corn hole in the front lawn. Hope to be back again."

  • "This restaurant was recommended to us by my sister so when we knew we were going to be in Williamsburg for Father's Day, I knew this is where we wanted to eat. The food was very good..we had the Seafood Chowder, the broth could have had more flavor but it was still good. We also had the Salmon, Scallops wrapped in parchment paper with spinach, wild rice - very tasty. My son had the filet w/ Brie cheese - he loved it. My husband's martini wasn't up to par but the waitress got him another one and all was good. The service was very good and everyone was friendly!! Will go back!"

  • "Quiet and peasant for an early holiday Sunday lunch. Menu had some interesting touches and old reliables. Very nice garden salad with chicken; the chili shrimp with grits was a nice idea, but ended up as a tomato based stew with a few shrimp and a dollop of grits--not quite there."

  • "Arrived 6:30pm for 7:00pm reservation. Was going to go to Taproom for Happy Hour before dinner reservation. Asked hostess if the dining room had Happy Hour. She told us "yes". So we decided to go in for our dinner reservation early. Was seated and waiter asked if we wanted a drink. I asked what beers were on for Happy Hour. He said that there was NO Happy Hour and the hostess didn't know what she was talking about!! This attitude almost ruined an almost perfect meal and dining experience!"

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience from beginning to end! Our dinner included the Warm Creamy Pesto Crab Dip, Seafood in Parchment Paper and Pineapple & Strawberry Cobbler--highly recommend all, they were each amazing! The dessert, however, was even a notch above and was like taking a bite of heaven! This was our anniversary dinner and the experience at this classy establishment made it a memorable one!"

  • "My steak was overdone and I was generally underwhelmed with my experience. Waiter was great. The two friends I was with enjoyed their meal. Worth giving another try but there are other restaurants I enjoy much more in the area at the same price point."
    Dined on 6/11/2014
  • "I was very pleased, but I have to say that the portion size was lacking. I had the filet and crab cake. The filet was about the size of an old flip phone. It took me about 4 bites to eat it. $30......not a good deal."
    Dined on 6/10/2014
  • "The spoons were dirty, service was slow and they charge for every soft drink refill without telling use first. The waitress brought a refill without asking leading us to believe they were free, but when we received the bill we were charged with all refills also. We were not checked on through he meal very often. Food was ok, not great. Nothing special. Nice they had music. Nice location near merchant square. Web page needs more pictures of seating area, etc. to help travelers decide on the location. Expensive food, low cost appearance seating areas. Made a reservation of Saturday night, but almost empty in the dining room. "

  • "We enjoyed our dining experience at Berret's a few evenings ago. After a long day of touring with temps in the 90's, the evening was very pleasant so we enjoyed dining on the patio. I had the fish in parchment which was very good and my husband had salmon, both were delicious and our waitress was very cordial and attentive."

  • "This was our second visit to Berret's - the first one was 5 years ago - the last time we were in Williamsburg. I'm happy to say that it is still excellent. We started with the Appetizer sampler platter, I had the blue plate special and my husband had the seafood baked in parchment paper which that day was salmon and scallops. Everything was cooked perfectly. My overall favorite was the she crab soup. The portions are generous. Next time I'll have to remember that so maybe I'll have room for dessert. The service was great - our courses came as they should without being rushed or waiting too long. We'll definitely put this on our list for our next visit."

  • "We thought the food was average and overpriced for what it was. The wine list was overpriced too. We will not return. "

  • "The food was excellent and the portions so generous. Our seafood was fresh and prepared in ways that were adventurous but still rooted in the comfortingly familiar at the same time. Lovely special occasion experience. our server was attentive and gracious. "

  • "Delicious food as always. Very busy on Mother's Day and also W & M graduation. The temp was a little warm but our waiter was awesome! A great experience all around."

  • "Our server Sterling was a blast and as always we had a great time having brunch here. I would recommend it to anyone looking for some nice seafood and a relaxed atmosphere."

  • "We felt very fortunate to obtain a reservation during graduation/Mother's Day weekend. Our worries about being rushed were completely unfounded. The service was attentive, the food excellent, and the environment welcoming even during the very busy dinner hour. We had opporutnity to speak with some local residents while touring Williamsburg; they congratulated us on our choice and indicated that Berret's was a local favorite. we can see why. We will be back!"

  • "Oysters on the half-shell were not as wonderful as our friends had predicted, but they were good. The she-crab soup was outstanding and the scallops with bacon were fantastic. The shrimp/salmon/crabcake made a nice combo. The disappointment of the evening was the bread pudding. It was not moist and was more like a stale dry bread-like cake with raisins. Too bad. However we will probably go back. Prices were fair and the ambiance good (not as noisy as some restaurants these days.) Great location "

  • "We have been dining at Berret's since my son's first year at William & Mary and go there every time we are in town to visit. The servers are invariably excellent and friendly without being intrusive. It's a gem in a sea of restaurants that cater to tourists, and we are so glad we found it. My son loves the filet mignon, and my husband and I nearly always have the seafood in parchment because it is so special. Drinks are generously sized, and the wine selection is superb. If we've saved room for dessert, the key lime pie is excellent, always a plus at a restaurant specializing in seafood. "

  • "We just arrived in Williamsburg and enjoyed our meal very much. The server was attentive and helpful. Our only complaint ( and a very small one ) our candle was not lit."

  • "We dined at Berret's three days in a row (dinner, lunch, dinner). Yes, it was that good. The seafood specials were amazing. All three servers were incredibly helpful with food and drink pairings. As foodies, we would highly recommend to anyone in Williamsburg! "

  • "This was out first time at Berrets, since we moved here. Excellent food and service. The salmon cake salad was terrific! It reminded me of my Mom's . The lunch atmosphere was quiet, so we could enjoy being with friends. We will have to come back for dinner. See you soon."
