A word from Bennett's Chop & Railhouse
In every city, there is a natural gathering spot for city folk and neighborhood people in the know. This place in Saint Paul is know as Bennett's Chop & Railhouse. Located on West Seventh & Victoria, it is the perfect meeting place of uptown and downtown, of quiet neighborhood and big city lights.r />
It's called a chophouse because it specializes in a casual steakhouse atmosphere with top-of-the-line cuts of the finest meats. It is a Rail-house because it is on the old railroad line serving the city and rail drinks (as well as top brands) are served in the convivial atmosphere of the horseshoe bar.

And of course Bennett's is Bennett's because owners Joe and Meghan Bennett ensure that welcoming hospitality is always served. They have taken their decades of experiences with leading hospitality brands and translated it into an intimate venue where you're not only a customer, but more importantly, a welcome guest.

Diner Reviews
  • "Great home cooking, superior cocktails, awesome service-the wait staff has been there for some time and they make you feel at home. Try the Brazilian Cosmo...will make you like you are in Mexico,,"

  • "Great Rib eye and get Corey as your server Bennett’s Ahh! I have been eating at Bennett’s for years now and this is my first review. The bar tending staff, if you not a weekly regular could use a little Dale Carnegie training. BUT the wait staff is great always makes you feel welcome and they know the menu. For the first time I had the Tomahawk Rig eye. Now when you look at the menu and see $ 38.00 for a steak you think WOW. But it was worth every penny. Tender juicy and not over spiced to let the flavor of the meat shine. The Beef rib is outstanding and the house sirloin for the money you can’t go wrong."

  • "This was our first meal at Bennett's and we'll be back. We had a NY strip and the Scallops/Risotto. The steak was good, but not great. The scallops were really good, but I could have gone for a couple more at that price. The side chopped salad is absolutely wonderful as was a curry potato/ham soup. We'll definitely be back, but will try other items on the menu."

  • "Bennett's is a hidden gem. The food is good and it has a welcome feel. We dined with friends before a Wild game and took the shuttle bus to and fro. This is a great way to go."

  • "Very friendly staff. We were a huge group of people and everything was handled promptly. Food was very good for the price."

  • "Went to WIld/Pens game that night and went to Bennett's before for dinner. I parked for free on the street and they had a bus that took us right to the Xcel arena. After the game, the bus driver took us back to Bennett's. The chopped salad was AMAZING and the crabcakes were so delicious. Great fun with all the hockey fans at the bar."

  • "Myself and 3 friends celebrate birthday dinners each year together. Birthday girl gets to choose the restaurant. Chose the restaurant for neighborhood feel and fish fry both of which we're fabulous!"

  • "For an old traditional neighborhood bar, this place has GREAT food. Not your usual burger and a beer type of place. The sandwiches all have a unique sauce or interesting ingredient. Salads are wonderful. Try the truly home made chicken pot pie. Service is prompt and very friendly. One of our favorite spots."

  • "We made a reservation on a recommendation and were really pleased. We had a great booth in the corner for the 4 of us and had a great evening. I will definitely come back again. Service was great and food was outstanding. Great neighborhood spot."

  • "A family gathering ( 10) . Food was great. Our server was a young gal who did an excellent job!! We had made reservations late. So they only had the one gal, but again she did a great job!! I heard no complaints from anyone."
    Dined on 3/30/2014
  • "The Prime Rib and Juicy Luicy were excellent, I would definitely recommend the dining experience. I did feel the drinks were a little steep in price, however; I live in Wisconsin were alcohol is cheep and flows like water so I may be wrong."
    Dined on 3/29/2014
  • "The restaurant was packed and loud, but after a short wait we were seated in a decent area away from the bar which was a little better. Had the salmon appetizer and fish meal - both were excellent."
    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "The environment was awkwardly cramped. It was loud and the waitstaff Had a hard time hearing our orders. The clam chowder was wonderful so I tied the fish fry. I had to change my roger after the Mrs. Pauls-like patties showed up cold and undercooked. The filet I replaced it with was deliteful but I'd have reservations about their food consistency."

  • "Outstanding food, great place. As other reviews indicate, service is slow."

  • "We were sat in the bar area which was SO LOUD we couldn't even carry on a conversation. There was plenty of open tables on the other side. When I asked the hostess if we could move to one of them we were told that those were for customers that had reservations. I told her we had reservations and then we were moved but were told we had to eat fast so the people who had reservations could sit there at 6:30. I also had a very long blond hair in my salad! All they did was to bring out another. We will not return!"

  • "I enjoyed my experience so much more than expected. The food and service were phenominal! We had the Reuben egg rolls and creole meatloaf-Awesome!! We loved the house salad that came with the entree as well. The restaurant is old and very much a bar atmosphere. Not where you would go for dress up occasion. When I leave someplace and can't stop talking about the food, it's definitely a placei want to return to. Good job!"

  • "Usually Bennett's is an awesome place to go to enjoy good food and warm hospitality. The shuttle from the restaurant to the Xcel Center really interested me. I made reservations to bring some out of town compnay here before going to a hockey game. Forgetting it was St. Patt's day weekend, we walked in got our table, didn't even sit down, asked to be moved further away from the bar and it wasn't possilbe so we left and went elsewhere. It was CRAZY busy and EXTREMELY loud!! The hostess apologized several times. It wasn't her fault. I hope everyone who was there has a good time!!! We will definately try Bennett's again when we get to St. Paul!!"

  • "my husband had a rib steak which he said was delicious. We were early so baked potatoes not done yet so he had au gratings. I think the onion rings were the best I have had for a while!"

  • "My wife and I arrived at Bennet's at our reserved time and were promptly seated. We waited 15 minutes before a server greeted us, but were able to place drink and food orders at that time as we had an engagement to attend later. I ordered the seafood risotto which was a great choice! Creamy texture with a generous amount of seafood scattered through the entire dish - large portion and presented well. My wife ordered Pan Seared Scallops – Pan seared scallops served on top of an asparagus risotto with basil oil and balsamic reduction. Unfortunately is had so much salt in the risotto it was nearly inedible - she asked for a potato and used her risotto in place of salt to try and mellow it."

  • "Like many other viewers, the exterior was a real turnoff. The interior didn't excite us either. There was no separation from the dinning room and the loud bar scene. The interior very dark but fairly typical for a St. Paul bar that serves food. Bennett's is very limited in space and has outgrown their popularity which probably discourages repeat customers. Now, that being said, the restaurant staff seemed exceptional. Each of the three servers not only appeared to be doing their job very well, when there was a need to get dishes taken away or food served, each of the staff functioned flawlessly. Our server, Amy, was the best. The food was very good and in plentiful proportions. I think the Chef could do so much more with more space."

  • "Great steak house on W 7th St. Great food, old times feel in the whole place. Reserve a table ahead of time as there isn't much space during busy times, but at night it mostly clears out except for the bar."

  • "Food was good, a little undercooked, but still good. Service was slow and sup-par at best. Empty drinks were an issue. We were disappointed when we overheard the table next to us talking about all you can eat crab legs. Our server never told us and that would have been our first choice over the steak and lobster dinners that we ordered. This is a great place to go if you're in the area, before a wild game, etc. I would like to try this on a not so busy night and see if the service is better."

  • "My fiancé and I made reservations here for Valentine's 2014. The staff was very friendly, competent, attentive, and prompt. We never had empty glasses - the staff works together well as a team. Our server was quite busy, but if she was tied up with the party of 8 next to us, someone else would bring us fresh drinks. The martini selection is huge and they are excellent, by the way. The food was very good, she had filet mignon and lobster tail, I had the beef tenderloins trio. This place nailed it in every way. It's a bit tight in there, so be prepared to rub elbows a bit during peak periods. We found that the regular crowd there was very friendly, so there were no worries in that regard. Overall A+. We will be back, probably with friends."

  • "We went to Bennett's for a dance pre-party and loved it! It took a while to get the food but the appetizers were great and it was a group of ten so I completely understand. I really recommend it!"

  • "First time here. Unassuming exterior made me concerned whether I led my friends astray, until we stepped inside. Cozy, unpretentious setting, with a casual vibe, was exactly what we wanted for a "friends night out" on Valentine's w/e. Most excited by the HUGE list of martinis...my Mint Chip Martini was delicious - tasted JUST like Peppermint Bon Bon ice cream! Less excited about my steak dinner - sirloin was tough and more done than the medium well I ordered, but I think I got my friend's well-done steak and she got mine. The au gratin potatoes and house chopped salad were good, but I've had better. Molten lava cake for dessert left a lot to be desired - Domino's has a better one. We had very attentive service, though."

  • "Service was very friendly. Dinning area was so tight that we could have been part of the couple beside us. Food had great taste and the portions were plenty. Required louder then average voice in order to carry on a conversation with my table. Very up beat and happy staff. Parking took creativity. It was worth the experience, but I would pass on a return trip. Do they have take out?"

  • "The crowded seating and close quarters left no room for a romantic dining experience. However, the food and service was wonderful. We drove a long way for the carriage ride and it was worth every mile."

  • "We went for Valentine's Day because we were in the area and normally don't get to St. Paul. It was definately a great place to eat and lived up to the rave reviews about service and food. Nice place, will return with friends."

  • "My wife and I had never been here before. We decided to try it out for Valentine's Day dinner. Busy place and yet we were made to feel welcome immediately even though it was probably a bit more nuts than usual. Service was very good both at the bar (as we arrived early) as well as from our table waitress when it came time for dinner. Great food, cozy, casual atmosphere. Would definitely go back for more. The New York Strip steak and their Swordfish both come highly recommended."

  • "My husband and I went here for Valentines day for the first time and were pleasantly surprised. From the outside, the building lacks curb appeal, however, inside it felt like fine dining. There were white linen, the menu was especially good- steak and lobster! Yum. The waitress was awesome, made us feel like we were the only two people in the room. After dinner, there was a complimentary horse and carriage ride. Perfect end to a Valentines night. Will definitely recommend this place."

  • "I took my wife here for Valentine's Day. We had never been here before, although had driven by it several times, so we thought we'd give it a try. This place was great! It's not a traditionally romantic place, but it was perfect! Great food, great service, we couldn't have been happier."

  • "I didn't know what to expect when I pulled up, I don't do a lot of things in Saint Paul and never heard of the place; but when we were seated instantly it felt like we were at a family members home. My fiance ordered the filet with the lobster tail and I had the rib, all was fantastic tasting; we then seen the couple next to us with an order of onion rings (my fiance being a sucker for onion rings) we ordered those as well. Our table was full of food and everything was awesome, I would; "will" tell all of my friends of my experience at Bennetts....."

  • "Don't let the exterior of Bennett's fool you. The cinder block exterior hides a truly great St Paul hideaway. This is our go-to place for family special occasions or romantic dinners. My wife and I usually go for the delicious sirloin or filet with choice of soup or salad (try the house chopped; a house garden salad also available) and choice of potato (baked, au gratin or fries). Get the steak mushrooms on the side - wow!! Our son enjoys the Juicy Lucy. Their menu includes pork chops, burgers and other choices. Unfortunately knowing how delicious the steaks are, it is hard to even consider anything else. The wine list is sufficient but not extensive. Prices are more than reasonable. Dinner, w/a glass of wine approx. $30-$35 per person."

  • "A disappointing experience with the server. We ordered a number of items include the following (from their online menu): Kosher salt and Black Pepper with campfire sauce $4 | $6 Smoked Salmon – Honey smoked Salmon served with flatbread crackers and horseradish cream sauce. $9.5 Neither item showed up with sauce. When we inquired, the server replied that neither were to come with a sauce. Not having the menu to show her directly, I asked if she had anything she could bring. She returned with one and said the other simply didn't exist. To make it more annoying, each time she returned to the table to check, she asked, "can I bring you anything? any more sauce", as if we were some high maintenance guests. Sell the menu or scrap the menu."

  • "First time eating at Bennett's. Friends knew it previously as Mitch's. Warm reception, got a booth as requested during reservation and before it became really busy. Great waitress, knowledgeable on requests and very helpful. Food and drinks were excellent, I had Prime Rib special. All of us said we would come back again to try other menu items."
