Benihana - San DiegoGreat place for family celebration!Our reservation was honored on time. We had a very entertaining chef who catered to our special occasion - 21st birthday. It was fun and the food was very good particularly the steak entrees. This is a good restaurant for special occasions and larger groups. The internet access to making reservations was easy and convenient. I was kind of worried that the reservations would be lost or misplaced but everything turn-out magnificent.

We immediately felt the energy from the hustle and bustle of the servers and the volume of the customers as soon as we entered the restaurant. In no time at all, we were taken to a table for eight, where we filled in the last two seats. The sever went over the items on the menu and provided us with the house specials. We ordered chicken fried rice, the Las Vegas roll, and the hibachi chicken and steak. The hibachi came with onion soup, a side salad, and green tea ice cream. The hibachi and rice were cooked right on the grill in front of us while entertained by the chef, making pacman or volcano shapes with our food. They have gluten free soy sauce, my mother has Celiac disease, but she can still come for the party, her food is cooked in the kitchen. The six people we were seated with were fun people. The chef was nice, still fun, more practice will get him up to the level on used too. Then the suggested tip, 18% was suggested, we didn't feel it was deserved. The waitress run out to the parking lot and told us we didn't pay our bill. We paid our bill in full and left what we thought appropriate for her service. It's just one of those places that is reliable to a great dining experience. You can go there and know you will have great service and great food. I have never disliked anything I ordered here and I have never left unhappy. I was expecting the food to be mediocre, and be focused more on the showmanship of the chef. The food was fantastic, and the Chef was terrific. The food was so fresh and tasty. The fillet mignon was one that rivals most steakhouses. The Las Vegas rolls were probably one of the best piece of sushi I've ever had. My wife had shrimp, lobster and scallops. The whole plate tasted like it was caught that morning. We like the casual atmosphere, although it's appropriate for more special occasions. There wasn't much on the menu he could eat, due to his religion, however the chef took the time to speak with us about what he could and couldn't eat. They ended up custom making sushi for my friend. I feel like they have minimal parking just so you are forced to pay the valet $5. Which isn't a big deal it's just unnecessary. I have been here millions of times over the past million years... lol I will say that it is due for a make-over. It is the same setting with the same decor and the same experience. I do notice that they have opened up the bar area into an actual seating area, that is a bit crowed on weekends, and awkwardly set so that there is a teeny tiny bar now, with absolutely no standing room, or sitting at the small bar. It could have been thought out better but always fun there, great energetic atmosphere. Wish it were a bit more modernized with the times though. The teppan chef was exceptional preparing a wonderful meal at Our table that was tasty, delicious and fresh. The service was good and the wait staff was courteous. The ambience was fitting for a Japanese restaurant with ample parking with both off-street and on-street available.
If You want an enjoyable dining experience in nice surrounds prepared at Your table with fresh, high quality food and ingredients, then Benehana's is the restaurant to go to.
