Bencotto offers 100% honest Northern Italian cuisine.

We are proud to offer 15 kinds of different hand-made pasta, fresh and hand-crafted 12 hours a day.

"Bencotto" means cooked well: this is what authentic Italian food is about.
Our menu is based on simplicity. It tastes as it should and would in Italy.

Bencotto offers two different eating environments: guests can either enjoy their meal at our “kitchen-esque” bar downstairs, or they can relax in the intimate low-ceiling dining area upstairs. The décor creates a clean and sophisticated atmosphere, where old-world charm and warmth blend with contemporary appeal.

This was our first visit to Bencotto, after frequenting Monello for the past couple of months. We make a point to try the specials and were not disappointed by the delicious seafood ravioli in a lobster bisque sauce! All in our party loved their meals, in addtion to the overall service, ambiance, & experience! I suppose my husband & I will now have to start splitting our time between Bencotto & Monello...

I had been saving this restaurant for a special occasion. I finally get the opportunity after having landed an amazing job. The first thing I do after receiving my job offer is make a reservation to this place. When we first arrived, we were 10 min early so they told us that our table would not be available until that time or we could have an open table outside on the patio right next to the door. It was a beautiful night so we chose the open table. The first thing I noticed was that despite having empty tables, they were telling people it would be 1.5 hour wait or offering help to a table at their sister restaurant next door. Having worked in a restaurant before, I was relieved that this was one that did not overseat and push their servers. I therefore had high hopes for the service we were about to experience. First it took 15 min to get water on our table because they were more concerned about the heating lamp than us even though it wasn't cold. Later, a different server brought us bread. Later our actual server came to ask for our order. A different server delivered our food and our server arrived shortly after to ask how everything was. That was the last time we saw our server until we were done, and I'm an extremely slow eater. Other servers for the tables beside us refilled our drinks (when we had to ask after having empty glasses). One of them while filling our glasses was the first to offer more bread despite the fact that we had been out since before our food came. When our server finally did return, he boxed up my food, 10 min later asked if we wanted any dessert, and 10 min later brought us a check. For the amount of effort the restaurant made to give their servers adequate time, this one did not utilize any of it. The food was good, but we've had better and my boyfriend's "spicy" dish was not spicy at all. Overall, I walked away full, but wishing I had chosen differently.

Some of their dishes are great while others are failures. While I admit I am partial to southern Italian cooking and they are more Northern, good is good and bad is bad. Their mellanzane was slimy and chewy and a seasonal pumpkin ravioli dish was so sweet as to be nauseating. However, the prosciutto was very good, the lasagne is excellent, and they have great wines and drinks. If they could just get it all to come together this would be a great restaurant.

I was in town for a conference and saw that Bencotto was a very highly-rated restaurant. We were looking for some great Italian food, not the usual fare. I had the Bolognese sauce over fettuccine and my wife had the spinach gnocchi. The food, service and atmosphere was fantastic. My wife and I had a wonderful time.

My wife enjoyed our 3rd trip here last Saturday. We had 6:30 pm reservations but arrived a bit early and were pleasantly suprised when we could be seated right away. Dinner was amazing, as it had been the other two times before. All the pastas are hand made and delicious! My wife had the hanger steak that was seasoned perfectly. We also had a Great bottle of Temparnillo wine to go with the meal that was awesome. All in all it was a Great dinner....Excellent food and excellent service.

On the end of a vacation, staying near Little Italy. This restaurant picked from Open Table reviews. It was perfect with wonderful pasta, especially the "pasta your way". We also HIGHLY recommend the Salumi appetizer with the gnoccho frito! The only down side was a pretty loud group, but then it was Friday night. We'll be back.

I took my girlfriend to Bencotto and had a terrific time. She had been there a few times with girlfriends and kept telling me that I needed to give it a try. We attempted getting a table one night on a whim which wasn't such a good idea; the restaurant is well-known and hard to get into without a reservation well in advance. Thank you, OpenTable! (Essential app if you don't already have it.) The food is excellent and so is the service. I believe our waiter that evening was David who was extremely helpful in accommodating us with allergin options. I fully plan on dining here in the near future to try other dishes. Great job!

Really great dining experience. I've been waiting to try Bencotto since I moved down to SD. Make a reservation in advance because it books up quick. We arrived early and had to wait, so we got a glass of wine at the bar. The bar is small and crowded, not the most ideal place to linger and wait but it was fine. We got seated before our reservation time and started with a bottle of wine, stuffed olives and the rice balls. Very good. We asked our waiter for recommendations and got the lamb ragout special and the tagliatelle with the Bencotto sauce, which is a pink pancetta sauce. So enjoyable. We ended with the trio of cannolis and they were great too. Can't wait to go back

Gnocchi is one of our favorite dishes and we order it whenever we see it on a menu. Most of the time they are too tough but this place knows how to do gnocchi the right way. I had the Gnocchi Nero special - squid ink gnocchi in a lobster bisque sauce with bits of shrimp. Very rich and very yummy. We also had the regular gnocchi with a salsiccia sauce. The sauce had a deep, rich flavor. The portions are HUGE. We both took home half of our dishes (both made a perfect breakfast the next morning!!!)

If you are looking for the best Italian food in San Diego, then you must try Bencotto. We started with deep fried olives that were stuffed with pork, then had a caprese salad that was not only beautiful, but fresh and yummy. I had ravioli that tasted like the ones we ate while in Italy. My husband had the gnocchi and it was also perfect. The desserts all looked divine and we chose a flourless almond cake that was served warm with a side of mascarpone. I highly recommend this restaurant, the service was great, they have a full bar and cool cocktails and the food is out of this world Italian!

I had heard that Bencottos pasta was inspired. The pasta was very good but both my pasta and my husband's came drowned in sauce. I would also say that this is a restaurant focused on pasta. The rest of the menu felt limited. Perhaps my problem is that I as expecting something more upscale. At any rate, this wasn't a hit for us and we won't be back.

I was visiting from out of town and was very excited to try this recent addition to Little Italy. The food was not impressive. The parmigiano appetizer was disappointing. The cheese was bland, lacking the nutty complexity you expect from this cheese. The pasta was mushy and the flavor of the Bolognese was lacking.

We made a reservation for a birthday dinner for 6 diners. This is our second visit to Bencotto and it is a great place to have a meal. The pasta dishes are phenomenal; fresh made, different and unusual from the standard Italian fare. I enjoyed the special squid ink gnocchi with perfectly tender shrimp in lobster sauce. While others enjoyed the eggplant with marinara, chicken parmigiana and fettuccine with sausage. Everyone loved their dishes with the gnocchi being the clear winner. The ambiance is modern, yet the noise level is such that you can actually hear one another talking. The wait staff was helpful and had the table waiting for us when we arrived. Overall a great dining experience...and have the gnocchi.

One of the worse meals in a long time. After reading all reviews which were spectacular and voted best new San Diego restaurant my wife and I selected Bencotto. I ordered gnocchi with walnut Gorgonzola cream sauce my wife ordered their signature dish Osso Buco. Both dishes were absolutely terrible. The cream sauce was like eating paste it was so thick and the gnocchi was starchy and heavy. The Osso Buco lacked flavor and was loaded with fat. The only part of the meal we enjoyed was a bottle of Rossi dI montalcino. This was our first visit to Bencotto and will surely be our last.

This restaurant has the most authentic Italian cuisine that we have found in San Diego in a long time. Their bolognese sauce is the closest to what we experienced in Florence Italy. The only reason I did not rate the service with 5 stars is that the people that were sat at a table near us monopolized our server's attention. The support staff was very good at keeping our water glasses filled and our meal moving.
