Diner Reviews
  • "Bella was very good. I have the Seafood Paella and my date had the Pork Chop Milanese. We were both very happy with dinner and our experience. Would go back again!"

  • "We went to Bella's because it had better reviews for a restaurant on the River Walk. We did not find it a great place to eat. When you first walk in it has a very musty odor. Very difficult to enjoy a meal with a bad smell in the air. The service was very good, but the food was variable. The Bruschetta appetizer we started with was almost inedibly salty. However my lamb chops were done to perfection and were very good. My daughter's pasta with meatballs was also a little salty, but had very good flavor and the pasta did seem home made. The beat salad I had was very small, but did have very interesting flavors. Over all a mixed picture. I would recommend Biga on the Banks as a much better choice if you want to eat on the River Walk. • "What a gem! Small place and a bit crowded but excellent food and service. Unique and different dishes prepared wonderfully. I can't wait to go back and try other entree's."

  • "Bella was a lovely, cozy restaurant. But, we were seated next to a noisy party of about 12 people. It was impossible to carry on a conversation. We liked the rustic loaf of bread and roasted garlic cloves with olive oil wrapped in paper. Thumbs up on both the beet salad and spinach salad. I enjoyed the Mediterranean Sea Bass. I was warned by the waitress that I would be getting a whole fish, head to tail. It was crisp and delicious. There was a slight trick to removing the flesh but I was able to do it! I don't think the restaurant can accommodate a very large party and expect other diners to pay top dollar for their meal. That made our meal less than perfect."

  • "We came to Bella 's before a show at the Majestic. The atmosphere is always intimate. And the owner always greets you with a smile. The food was outstanding and well paced."

  • "Go to Texas - have great Italian. Go figure... We did Bella for our last night in San Antonio, and it was supurb. My wife and I started with the antipasta, and there was so much of it that I almost couldn't finish my dinner. We both had the lamb - she the tenderloin and I had the special chop. Both were cooked perfectly. I even ate all my vegitables! Good, attentive service, a nice atmosphere, and great food. What more could you ask for?"

  • "We loved the ambiance, quiet, dark and close. We felt like we were eating in Europe. It was very quiet when we arrived, but that was before most of the dinner crowd. It got a little louder but never too noisy. Because it's so small, it felt pretty crowded when the room filled up. That won't stop us from going again."

  • "My wife and I dined Bella's the other evening celebrating her birthday. We could not have been more pleased. It was wonderful. The food, ambience, and service were 5star."

  • "Fresh ingredients creatively prepared...especially seafood items. Limited but reasonably priced wine list. No liquor available. Canal-side tables are limited (if you want one, and why wouldn't you) so make sure to reserve in advance."

  • "Excellent experience! Dave the manager and Allison our server were fantastic in providing us with excellent service to enhance our anniversary experience. Ceviche was amazing and the desert combination of the pistachio cake and salted caramel ice cream was to die for! Will return soon :)"

  • "We made reservations - ate inside - excellent service and atmosphere (jazz music, rustic interior, linen tablecloths). Perfect for romantic dinner - or in our case an all-adult dinner. Enjoyed the appetizers; eggplant, anti pasto, bruschetta. Entree of paella was delicious!!! Lobster entree and pasta/meatball entree were also good. We will return when we visit San Antonio again!"

  • "Looked up romantic places to eat and this popped up decided to try it and do not regret it. Only downside for us was we are not familiar with high class dining lingo."

  • "We had a lovely time at Bella. We sat outside right on the Riverwalk and watched the boats go by. Our service was excellent. Our waiter, Will, did a wonderful job and gave us several good recommendations. We had the Branzino and short rib pasta, both were very good. We split the ricotta cake for dessert. Its presentation was beautiful and it had flavors to match. We would certainly dine here again."

  • "Among the many dining choices on the San Antonio Riverwalk, this intimate spot charms you . A small dining area with tables close to each other, it helps make dining friends easy. Excellent choices of appitizers and salads lead you into a Mediteranean Branzino [ head to tail ], Rainbow Trout enjoyed by my BW, and an interesting entree of Meatballs and Bowtie Pasta in a tasty sauce. Wait staff led by Nathan tried hard to please considering a busy night and many tables to serve.Try Harry's Bellini, a rare cocktail find in San Antonio."

  • "We had heard about Bella and wanted to try it. Fortunately, we booked our reservation weeks in advance. This tiny little gem only seats 45...and they do not rush their diners. Patrick was our waiter - the service was excellent. We have dined up and down the San Antonio River...and this is now our favorite restaurant."

  • "Everything about this place was enjoyable. The waiter knew the food & the wines and was able to make good suggestions. It was a tight fit but we knew that going in. The place had a nice romantic rustic feel too it. We will go back."

  • "My friend and I absolutely loved Bella on The River. We were in town for a company meeting and it was a welcome escape from the banquet dining with our group. We were looking for something outside the "cowboy" genre. You simply must try the Eggplant Josephine. None of the reviews I read prepared me for how wonderful it was. If you like eggplant and shrimp, this dish is a must! I had a trout special with swiss chard and a delicate sauce which was delightful. My friend was craving pasta and was very pleased with the meatball pasta dish from the regular menu. From the simple to the sublime, our food was delicious. The service was so attentive and friendly, I felt like I was dining in a personal home. Reservations are recommended."

  • "Delicious food! One of the few places where the slightly smaller portions are worth the price and not at all pretentious! The staff was very friendly and our waiter was fabulous! The eggplant appetizer was delicious, the beet salad, divine, and their wine list was quite impressive. Overall an amazing experience on The Riverwalk! An unexpected gem of thoughtful cuisine amidst the crazy fishbowl margarita mass-produced generic food jungle."

  • "Good energy. Close tables, but staff moved around them wonderfully. Great food, good wine list. Enjoyed the eggplant Josephine and the paella. Too full for dessert, but was highly recommended by couple near us. A great gem on the river walk."

  • "We were looking for a place to eat dinner on the River Walk. Bella is on the quiet end of the River Walk, and was close to our hotel. It is very small so you definitely want to have reservations. The food was delicious. My husband and I each had fish (I had the fish special). They are accommodating to children, with chicken fingers or pasta offered for the kids. Would have liked to try the eggplant Josepine, but we were too full. Great wine specials, including Failla chardonnay by the glass. Will definitely go back!"

  • "We received a dining gift from our son for our planned 1st trip to San Antonio. We checked out their website and menu and we were not disappointed! From the confirmation voicemail from David, the warm greeting upon arrival and the attentive service to the FABULOUS food and wine, we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. The Pasta Bella was just the right entree portion size as well as the server recommended special, tile fish with wilted arugula. Reservations are definitely recommended as we witnesses many walk-ins being turned away. Will certainly be dining here again!"

  • "Had an amazing dinner at Bella! We were celebrating my sister's birthday, and everything was perfect and delicious. Service was great and our waiter was very nice and friendly. I know several people mentioned food portions, but let's face it - we shouldn't be eating large gargantuan portions of food anyway. If you go to nice restaurants, you will find the portions here perfect. Fish special was great as was the Pasta Bella - melt in your mouth. We tried three desserts - Salted Caramel Ice Cream, Ricotta Cake & Butterscotch Creme Brulee - all delicious. We had a good Cabernet and the Sangria Rosa was so refreshing. Bella House, Roased Beet, and Spinach salads were very good also. I would go back in a heartbeat."

  • "We thought it was overpriced for the quality and taste of food. Have had better food for cheaper. It is very hard to find and very small, felt very tight."

  • "This tiny little spot was a wonderful place to celebrate my husband's birthday as well as a weekend away from our two small children. It's a small, intimate setting with a lot of charm. We had a 4 course meal, and each exceeded our expectations. Presentation was lovely and tasted great! My husband thought it might have been the best filet he's ever had (and he's had a LOT of steaks). The wine list is adequate and priced well. Overall, would definitly recommend, and we plan to go back!"

  • "In town on vacation and we were lucky enough to get an outside table. Loved the food and the entire experience but I'm not sure I'd want to eat inside. The inside felt loud and crowded."

  • "I made reservations a month out and had a great table waiting for us. I'd just gotten engaged the night before and the restaurant was at the top of list for places to take her. The food was amazing! It was however very pricey with small portions though."

  • "Bella was great! The chef is amazing and our food was outstanding. The owner greated us inside and showed us to our table. He was gracious and welcoming. Definitely make a reservation as seating is very limited. Highly recommended for a nice evening out with that special someone."

  • "Great atmosphere, particularly for a romantic night out - not expected on the touristy Riverwalk. The service, when our server could spare a moment, was great, although it was quite a busy night (Saturday of Valentine's Weekend) and it seemed to be just a bit understaffed. Food was definitely above par for a tourist trap of an area, and much more diverse than the expected straight-up Italian. On a non-touristy-area scale, the food would probably drop to 3-stars. This place is more about the ambiance than anything and deserving of a date-night visit should you be in the area."

  • "My husband and I went for our Valentine's Day dinner. The food was superb. I recommend the paella. There is a lot of quality seafood in it. The bread with roasted garlic is delicious. They also allow wine flights in which you get to choose your own three wines. They gave each lady a beautiful long stemmed rose which was very nice. The ambiance is really nice too - an old building right on the River Walk."

  • "We had a fantastic experience at Bella on the River. Our server, Patrick, was quite knowledgeable about the menu and the evening's specials, and made sure we were happy with each course and accompanying wine. I had the veal, and my husband had the lobster - these after a lovely appetizer of antipasto. Desserts were ricotta cake and salted caramel ice cream. I'm telling you - this ice cream is DELICIOUS! Such a wonderful texture!! We also had the 20 and 30 year old ports. The 20 year old port had a nice pecan finish, and the 30 year old port was just divine! The owner was attentive, as well, and thanked us for making reservations. This is highly recommended - several couples were not able to be seated due to not having reservations."
