  • "Beacon Public House has a versatile menu that should appeal to many diners, and for a hotel restaurant, it's decent. I wouldn't make a special trip to eat there, but if you're staying at The Common's Hotel, it's good for dinner and breakfast. The bangers and mash are tasty - but a huge portion. Service was great at dinner but more uneven at breakfast."

  • "Like my "crispy" pork belly was not the least bit crispy, actually rather slimy fat and when i mentioned it to the waiter he ignored me. The lamb burger came without the chips .... Details! Not impressed & not an inexpensive dinner."

  • "I found this place on Yelp and was intrigued by their website. I needed to find a nice place to reconnect with an old friend. This proved to be the perfect place! Mother's Day Brunch was over and they had just started serving the dinner menu. My friend and I sat, ate, talked and drank wine for about 3.5 hours. It was the perfect venue. The food was good. I had the vegetable soup du jour and the Meatloaf sliders. Nicely done, both of them and the portions were perfect. My friend had the roast chicken with potatoes and vegetables. The plate came and his comment was, "wow, usually you don't get enough in places like this". It was again an adequate, but not overly large portion. He indicated that it was very good. "

  • "Took my mom here for Mothers Day brunch and was surprised how delicious and eclectic the menu was. Everything we ordered was amazing and the service was prompt. Ambience is cool, I would definately recommend to anybody especially for brunch. "

  • "The only complaint that I could think of for this restaurant - and this was stretching it - was that there were screens showing all sorts of different sports events on over the bar. Because the lighting in the restaurant itself was so low, the bright neon of the screens showed very bright and it was distracting. Overall, the food was excellent, and our server, Patrick, was great. I would recommend the Heart of Darkness cocktail or the Modern Mule to anyone."

  • "We chose Beacon Public house so we could avoid the beer drinking crowded bars. It was great to be able to make a reservation. The nachos were fabulous, the sliders were tasty and the cocktails were great. Service was a little slow and oil used for the onion rings was old."

  • "I made reservations for 4:45pm for my wife and I. This was our first time going there. We were nut guests of the attached Commons Hotel so we had to park two blocks away. We were seated right away but at a table directly next to a large group instead of a booth that was open. It was awkward as we were practically on top of them and by the end of dinner it had grown to over 30. People were literally sitting inches away from our table so not quiet or romantic. The Food: Simply put Amazing. 3 course menu with arugula salad, braised shirt rubs, chocolate cheeses cake with raspberry compote filling. . Executed perfectly the ribs were fork tender.. Heaven. Our waitress was very attentive and pleasant. We will definitely go back soon."

  • "Very classy and very comfortable - not just another drab hotel restaurant. And wonderfully, not some sports bar. (Applebee's is right next door for that mood) Eclectic menu! I had a smoked salmon appetizer plate that I turned into an entree following a delicious (and hearty-sized) bowl of the daily soup. I highly recommend both staying in the Commons and dining at the Beacon Public House!"

  • "Went to Open Table to see what was open on Christmas Eve for my family of 5 visiting from Iowa. Wanted something that had some city flare but not the ridiculous price tag to go along with it. Never even heard of Beacon Public House before I saw it on OT and decided to give it a chance. It was perfect! Great unique atmosphere, good drinks, good food (mine was a tad colder than I'd like when it came out but the flavor was astronomical) and very friendly staff. Would highly recommend if you're looking to impress a family from out of town without whipping out the pots and pans."

  • "My friends and I wanted to go somewhere new for Christmas Eve after having a bad experience last year. This year was great! We went to the Beacon Public House and are glad we did. The food is outstanding, creative, and fresh- a special Christmas menu was available, but we all ordered off the main menu. Everything was outstanding from the turkey burger to perfectly grilled rare salmon. The place is large, but intimate with super comfy booths. We are all glad to have found this place and will definitely be back with more friends."

  • "This was our first visit to The Beacon Public House. Likes: very comfortable booths that kept the noise level down; attentive, friendly and knowledgeable waiter; nice selection of beers, wines and specialty cocktails; tasty small plates and apps - definitely an upgrade from standard pub fare. Dislikes: while the drinks were reasonably priced, the foods items were pricey considering the small portions. The chicken wings we ordered were very good, but they looked like they were taken from a Cornish game hen! The Korean bbq short ribs were quite flavorful (and a little tough) but the portion was smaller than we expected. I would come back for happy hour when the apps are discounted but probably not for dinner."

  • "I took a chance on the BPH for my wedding anniversary dinner based on the recommendations from Open Table. There were four in our group and I had made a note in my Open Table reservation about this being an anniversary celebration. The hostess and waitress were aware of the celebration and made it a very special time for us. Everyone enjoyed their food. Two of us had swordfish: one blackened, the other not, and both of us felt that it was prepared correctly and tasted great. They have valet parking if you choose, which made for easy access. We also liked the modern decor and comfortable booth seating."

  • "We enjoyed a nice light dinner on the patio on what will likely be one of the last pleasant evenings of the year. My date enjoyed the Golden Beet Salad, while I went with the trio of Codfish Tacos and a Summit Saga. Nice presentation, decent pricing, attentive service. The patio was enjoyable as there was very little traffic at the hotel. Of course, getting to the hotel is a challenge with all of the construction, one-way streets, and students. Trying to figure out parking is absurd due to all of the restrictions -- just use the Washington Street Ramp a block away (just realize that the entrance is off of a dead end street!). I'm sure that visiting parents would enjoy the Beacon."

  • "We enjoyed the atmosphere, very quiet. They have lots of tv's,so if you don't want your company distracted at dinner,go elsewhere. My husband can't move his eyes off the screen. We ordered popcorn shrimp for a starter. It was great except it came after our salads. My beet salad would have really good except half the green were spotted brown and old. We had the half chicken and New York Strip. Pretty good. We were one of three tables in the entire restaurant, so you would think the food would come out fairly quickly. No such luck. It's a new place, so, give it time."

The food is okay. It's good, not great, not super creative. The ambiance is outstanding. The decor is cool and hip."

  • "It's nice to have a "grown-up" restaurant on this side of campus, a nice alternative to fast food and bar food. Very good food, perfect portion sizes, salads and sandwiches are reasonably priced for the quality. The pulled pork taco salad is my favorite. If you want one of their awesome booths for lunch, be sure to reserve ahead, as they book up fast."

  • "5ppl for 715pm on a Sat. Not too many tables were seated. I didn't arrive until 15 minutes after my friends. 1st round of drinks didn't come until well after I arrived. Service continued to be slow as we received our food. Had to remind server about apps which didn't arrive until AFTER meals had come (which were comp'd). Had to ask other staff for water & pepper/salt. Decent beer/wine/cocktails. Food highlights were burger with short ribs, biscuits, horseradish potato puree, and brusell sprouts"

  • "I eat out a lot and have had my share of mediocre food of which I am not that picky about but Beacon Public House set a new low food-wise. The mussels were old and tasted fishy-we couldn't even eat them, the venison satay tasted like round steak. The only saving grace was the maytag blue cheese from the blue cheese and date dish. I left hungry and horrified. I would go back for drinks as the decor and vibe were a breath of fresh air to Dinkytown but would eat beforehand."

  • "Great beer list. I love that they carry lots of local options - especially Pour Decisions ans 3 different options from Sumnmit (including the excellent Oatmeal Stout). Bravo! Went with friends for some small plates and brews. Loved the mussels & frites (with truffle oil). Wonderful fries and great to dip in the garlicky sauce from the mussels. The popcorn shrimp was also excellent: full sized shrimp battered in a light tempura. The asparagus and bacon was also a highlight with the perfectly poached egg on top. The bacon was a big slab of tasty pork belly - awesome. The only disappointment was that someone ordered the last panna cotta for dessert before me, but the saffron creme brulee stood in well."

  • "We met a group before the Gopher Hockey game and while we were greeted and seated immediately the server was a bit slow. The food however was a pleasant surprise we had a couple of the Happy Hour appetizers poppers and sliders which were delicious. Fish and Chips were crisp and tasty not oily, two had the flat iron steak and cooked perfectly and very tender. The ragu was rich and layered with flavors, I had the asparagus with a thick slice of Nueske bacon, a perfectly cooked poached egg and generous black truffle, asparagus these were a rich and sinful combination, I paired it with bangers and mash in which they are not shy on horseradish in the mash but again the sausage full of flavor and I am always a sucker for caramelized onions."

  • "A group of friends and I ate here last Sunday, and what a great experience! All day happy hour was spectacular, and plenty of TVs to watch the game (which seems to be the hardest thing to find in MN - I think they had at least 12) Our server was so much fun and ALL of her recommendations were spot on. Not one food item we got was less than delicious but my two favorites were the burrata and the salmon carpaccio. I will certainly be back to my new favorite game spot."

  • "The food was good, but the service was really awful. We sat at a bar table, 7 of us and it took 2 1/2 hours, really unacceptable. Then I was shocked when I finally got the bill to see that 18% gratuity was added to the bill. I would have tipped, of course, slow service is not always a waiter's fault, but to see that much added to my bill after waiting forever for each stage of the process was really unacceptable. For a bar atmosphere, the prices are much too high. No one disliked the food, but a meal is much too expensive for an informal atmosphere. Add the very poor and slow service and the mandatory 18% tip, and you have a very bad experience. Won't be back."
