A word from Bastille Cafe & Bar
Opened in June of 2009 and housed in an historic 1920’s building in Seattle’s Old Ballard neighborhood, Bastille Café & Bar is a bustling homage to a Parisian brasserie. Owners Deming Maclise and James Weimann scoured Paris flea markets and local salvage stores for vintage accessories to create a truly authentic feel. From the white subway tiles, antique mirrors, and Paris Metro clock to the zinc-topped bar and stunning crystal chandelier that takes center stage in the Back Bar; they’ve truly hit the mark. Chef Jason Stoneburner creates French focused cuisine inspired by the abundance of seasonal product found locally---and it doesn’t get any more local than the restaurants 4500-square-foot organic rooftop garden. The wine list is French focused with a smattering of NW wines and the bar offers an extensive collection of absinthe.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "My friend, who was my Best Man, is getting married soon. We decided to go dinner with his Best Man. The groom chose Bastille. As it turned out, my friend's Best Man was a no-show. So, the two of us had a fantastic dinner. We started with the house-smoked salmon appetizer, on to the house salad with lardon. We both chose the Steak Frites accompanied by a fine Corbières. Dinner was followed by a couple of rounds of a nice Armagnac. Overall, a great dinner, with a great friend. We are looking forward to returning. Next time with the Best Man."

  • "the croque madame wasn't as great as previous visits. i've dined here many times, and will continue to, and LOVE Bastille, but this was kind of a bummer - not served in the cast dish anymore, was a bit dry and had to ask for sauce mornay on the side to add to it. there also weren't any beans in the 'eggs en cocote' not sure if that was an oversight or a menu change but it was preferable the previous way. service was good, drinks were good, just a couple notes on the food. ;)"

  • "I always try to bring out of town visitors to Bastille because I think it is a great representation of Seattle's love of good food, local sourcing, in house made specialties, and fantastic cocktails. The brunch menu is delicious and all the food is beautiful. Did I mention the yummy cocktails? Bastille also poaches eggs just right!"

  • "When the meal started, I was slightly disappointed that the baguette we ordered showed up room temperature, but I didn't need to worry. I didn't have another complaint the rest of the night. The mussels were fantastic! And the profiteroles to die for. Bastille came highly recommended to me from a friend and I will surely recommend it highly to others"

  • "Like a mini-vacation in Paris. Great ambiance and spectacular food. I wish we could eat here every day. We drive from south of Seattle all the way across town to the north side to have Sunday brunch here. It has the added attraction of being next to the Ballard Farmer's Market, which is open all year."

  • "We had a fabulous brunch on a sunny Sunday with the farmer's market buzzing on the street outside the restaurant. Our server was terrific and took very good care of us. There were four of us and we each had a different dish and each of us loved what we ordered. We were never rushed even though there were people waiting to sit out on the patio where we were seated. It was a wonderful experience all the way around. I also highly recommend Bastille for happy hour as I believe they have one of the best burgers in the city and there food and drink prices are a deal."

  • "My partner and I are avid foodies. We try to go out somewhere new at least once a week and try out all types of cuisine. Bastille is one of those go to restaurants where we know we are going to be happy! Everything is outstanding from the wine, cocktails, apps, entrees, and dessert to the service and ambience. I highly recommend it for your next date night."

  • "We have been eating at Bastille since it opened. It is our favorite restaurant. We brought our friends here and it is now their favorite place too. We have never had a bad meal or bad service here. I don't think I can say that about any other restaurant. Whenever my husband and I are celebrating a special occasion Bastille is our go to place."

  • "Large portions of excellently prepared food. Come hungry. Not traditional French cuisine but very close."

  • "Waitress was barely there. I had a cocktail and wanted another but she literally did not check in until we were done with our meal and the moments had passed. Many of my mussels were undercooked and I had 3 shells that weren't even open! I know it will sound snobbish but most places will pick those out. My partner's salad barely had any dressing and his salmon was undercooked as well. With such great hype I feel bad hating it but I do. Will not go back."

  • "I took my parents here for a night out on the town. We had an incredible server who was extremely well-versed in menu options and food preparation. He made great wine and absinthe recommendations, as well. The food was impeccable. All four of us loved our meals. We will definitely be back!"

  • "Even though it was already the middle of the day, I made a reservation on Open Table at Bastille, and left a note saying, "sweetbreads?" My wife and I arrived at a perfectly renovated building in the Ballard Avenue historic district. The room was a bistro to die for, and the music, at just enough volume to be made out above the conversations in the large room, was French with a small dose of Madeleine Peyroux. When the menu arrived, there was a daily specials sheet which included ... (wait for it!) ... sweetbreads! The woman working the front of the house saw my joy and came over to say that they had gotten my message. The sweetbreads were perfect- just crunchy enough on the outside to have that nutty taste. We will be back soon. "

  • "All of our dishes were absolutely delicious. My eggs en concotte had perfectly cooked eggs, the cheese complemented the entire dish. Our Challah French Toast was perfect and springy like a spongecake almost. The Farmer's breakfast was so incredibly French and the rabbit pate was amazing for someone who normally never eats rabbit. All servers were friendly and very attentive to our enjoyment of the food and our water refills. "

  • "Really nice dinner. Food we were able to order was terrific. Unfortunately, the kitchen ran out of several choices, which seemed a surprise at 7:00 pm. Granted it was a Sunday night, but it was a holiday weekend. Wait staff was good, but seemed tired and ready to go home. Too bad, because this is a fantastic restaurant. "

  • "I love French food and a friend recommended Bastille so we went for dinner. The interior looks like a train station and I loved the ambiance and somewhat loud buzz of people talking and background music. Service was fine/prompt and every item we had (kale salad, grilled chicken, grilled salmon, burnt caramel) was delicious in that rich yet extremely flavorful French way. Three entrees, one salad, one dessert and one $35 (the cheapest they have) bottle of wine plus a 20% tip came to $200. That unfortunately limits this place - for me anyway - to very special occasions. Everything like bread, olives, whatever is an extra charge."

  • "Bastille is one of my favorite spots in Ballard. It is always great, and the staff seems to really like working there. It gives the restaurant a good feeling when you are there. Service, food, wine list, all top notch. I think the guys who opened this place have a few other places, I just wish they would open one up on Queen Anne! Bastille is good for gluten free people, they are very helpful. Love the wine list."

  • "We've been here for lunch and for cocktails so I knew it would be great and I was right. Our waitress was super friendly and dialed in. The Bloody Mary's were great and the Eggs Benedict was seriously the best I have ever had - great flavor, texture, and presentation."

  • "Recently we had a chance to dine at Bastille Cafe & Bar. I chose the place because it was a very special occasion. It was our 35th wedding anniversary. Food was great and the service was wonderful. Bastille gets my highest recommendation. BTW I have bought $100 gift certificate there so friends and familly can experience it for themselves."

  • "A friend suggested this restaurant and as we seldom have French food we thought it would be a nice change. The restaurant is lively, meaning it is noisy. There is definitely an energetic vibe. The service was good but not exceptional. The same really can be said of the food. Would I go there again. Perhaps. I guess I was hoping for a quieter more relaxed atmosphere. Probably not the best place to catch up with old friends and have deep, heart-to-heart conversations. Which is what we were hoping for. "

  • "The service is top notch at this establishment and it's not our first time dining at Bastille. Food was great and drinks were too."

  • "Don't go there if you are hungry and feeling romantic. My wife ordered the salmon and it was raw in the middle. Sent it back and it came back raw again. I ordered the braised pork, it was tasty but the portion was fit for a bird. The noise level was so high we could not have a conversation. We ordered a bottle of Perrier and got cheap Italian water. The wine was not fresh, I think it came from a bottle that had been open for several days. For all the hype, it was a little below average."

  • "I was so excited when we got a table outside on the patio until I realized that just outside the patin on the sidewalk is where all the smokers go. Rather than 25 feet, the group was about 5 feet and the breeze blew their smoke right into the area we were sitting. Though the food was good, as always, I realized that outside isn't great and the inside is a bit cramped and dark. Unless you can ask for a table far from any of the "smoking spots", you should consider one of the other great French restaurants in town where smoke doesn't come with the dinner. "

  • "I went to Bastille when my mom was visiting town. We had an excellent experience. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was vibrant and fun. Our service was all around pretty good, the server got busy and kind of forgot about us, but she was friendly and answered all of our questions. I will definitely be back!"

  • "I really enjoyed the atmosphere - an older building with good interior decoration in the heart of Ballard: excellent location for a night outing. I did not like any of the dishes served - not sure if it's just my taste that is to blame - everything came with a good (read: pretty high) price tag but on inspection was a simplistic dish apparently thrown together ad hoc. This is my limited experience based on a single visit."

  • "I had brunch at Bastille for Easter. I had my 3month old infant with me. Server knew the menu really well and was able to describe the specials in great detail. She was also quick to notice when we were low on drinks. They were accommodating with my infant and gave us enough space for the car seat and a place to put the stroller by the entrance. The restaurant was WARM! Lots of people, very loud, the kitchen is open in the back so all the heat travels to the rest of the restaurant. At first I was thinking maybe it's because I'm holding a warm baby while drinking a mimosa, was why I was hot. But taking a look around, I wasn't the only one. It wasn't a deal breaker, but it didn't make me want to linger any longer than I had to. "

  • "I just love the whole authentic French Bistro vibe you get as soon as you walk in the door here! Decor is perfect, with all the right touches to make you think you're practically strolling into a little place along the Champs de Elysees...the place just hums with the vibrancy of happy diners enjoying themselves, and the foods is delicious! My husband had the Roasted Half Chicken, I had the special "Duck Pate", rustic in style and covered with a lovely layer of arugula and side of mustard, and we shared a beautiful Baby Butter Leaf salad with radishes, blue cheese and a light lemon vinaigrette all washed down with a delightful red wine!"

  • "This was the first time I had eaten here since soon after the restaurant opened, when my husband and I found it difficult to talk over the noise level. My husband won't go back, so I took my two teenage grandchildren to what I would call an early dinner (6 pm), hoping to find it less noisy. Unfortunately, it was still difficult to hold a conversation without talking loudly ourselves. Maybe the outdoor seating would be better? The food and service has been good on both visits and the frites with truffle aioli are not to be missed."

  • "We decided to do small plates. Oysters, pate, cauliflower/fava bean gratin, asparagus salad with wine and dessert. Everything was wonderful. Small, tasty oysters, rich pate great. The gratin was tasty and flavorful. Perfectly grilled asparagus with feta and an herb salad was a wonderful palate cleanser. And profiteroles for dessert. Food was well prepared, flavorful and eye appealing. Would definitely return."
