Diner Reviews
  • "Food seemed authentic Spanish with a twist. I was surprised at the items that were my favorites! Salmon crudo a must! Goat cheese mousse dessert also a favorite. Loud, but cheery and cool modern vibe. Waitress was great. Appreciated the attempt to keep it all regional to Spain and Portugal instead of varying too much..."

  • "What a lovely space in our amazing city of fabulous places to dine. From the time we entered we felt cared for. The owner checked on us throughout the meal and every dish was perfection. The squid is a must as well as the lamb. LOVED them!"

  • "Barlata on South Lamar is a wonderful place! The wide selection and types of tapas are wonderful and the waitress was super helpful. Not being too familiar with Spanish wines she also guided us to an fantastic selection. Overall our variety of tapas and wine were fantastic. We topped off the night with some amazing desserts and enjoyed every bite! Looking forward to visiting again. This could become a regular location for us!"

  • "Barlata is new on the scene and has uniquely delicious and quality plates to offer...the real thing. The waitstaff is very attentive and the selection is refreshing. Bar drinks are a treat alongside the tasty treats. Great to go with a small group and share the Tapas and try new tastes. Crema Catalana and ice cream for dessert!"

  • "Great service. Happening place. Easy parking. We had reservations, and our table was ready immediately. Food and wine were outstanding. The noise level—a bit too much."

  • "We were a party of six and had a wonderful time trying a wide variety of dishes. It's a great sharing place and the cocktails are delicious. Very trendy and good people watching. The only slight downside is that it's pretty loud."

  • "Was really excited about trying this restaurant, especially the Paella. Disappointed...was just ok. Ordered several other tapas and nothing really stood out. May try again, perhaps it was just an off night?"

  • "The hostess was welcoming and sweet. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu, and took good care of us throughout the meal. We started with a pear, cheese and anchovy salad which we found delectable (doesn't appear on the online menu.) The Gambas Ajillo (shrimp with garlic) was excellent. The Grilled Baby Lamb Chops were delicious with a really nice char. The Lobster paella was good, but the lobster was in the shell, a bit difficult/messy to get out, and bit tough to chew. We tried two of the desserts and didn't care for either one. The strawberry ice cream was dry and lacked creaminess. It sort of broke apart in your mouth and didn't melt on the tongue. The Mel I Mato looked pretty, but had a strange flavor."

  • "Third visit to this spot. Excellent food, but often too salty. Excellent server, and setting. Our table was overrun with ants, interestingly, but that was a minor blip but it cost ambience one star."

  • "Barlata is a great place for a special celebration. Great food, great service, wonderful setting. Only complaint is that it is very loud."

  • "Barlata is one of our favorite restaurants. The food is always good. We love the Paella, the tortilla de papas, las gambas, papas bravas, etc..."

  • "The owner/chef was very rude, we were not not pleased with our food and ask the waitress of we can order something else and the chef came back to our table with the food and was very rude and did not give us another choice. None of the food was authentic and did not taste like food from Spain."

  • "We were there on Flamenco dancer night so it was VERY noisy. I would not have gone there that night if I had been aware of the entertainment. I made the reservation on Open Table. Is there a way to warn people about these events via Open Table?"
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "We went for the flamenco dancing. But were equally impressed with the food and cocktails. I was highly recommend coming here for a nice dinner out."

  • "Fun restaurant with a super friendly staff and an amazing menu. Get excited about trying something new and sample all of the interesting flavors they have to offer. Take the recommendations from the waitstaff. You can't go wrong. Paella and Tortilla Española are a must!"

  • "We are so impressed with the training of the staff. They make you feel welcome without hovering or being artificial. The food is delicious and reasonably priced. Barlata is our new "go-to" place."

  • "We've eaten here a few times now and it improves every time we go. Our wait staff was knowledgable about the menu and the wine list. The owner was on site which speaks to his dedication and the continued fine tuning of the restaurant. Our guests loved it and said they would certainly return."

  • "We sampled small plates of Spanish specialties that were amazingly delicious. The peppers stuffed with creamy shrimp salad were a standout. The Iberico ham was positively unctuous. And, the pork meatballs spiced with fennel were fantastic, as was the chorizo plate. Overall a lovely, festive, dining experience."

  • "Enjoyable meal...paella was underwhelming but desserts were quite good...would like to go back and try other tapas dishes"

  • "Great food and vibe but it is super loud. I guess some people will love it and other's won't! Nonetheless the food was excellent and unique and the place feels festive. I'll be back for sure."

  • "Food is excellent, great choices, but our waitress made it happen. Patient, helpful and friendly."

  • "Unsure what other diners are eating and raving about here. Uneven ceviche (why chewy octopus?) in what amounts to a nice cocktail sauce, mushy boquerones, uninspired though stiff drinks, and decent quail in garlic sauce."

  • "It is really good and you will have a good time there but little bit pricy though"

  • "Barlatas is like having a little bit of Spain in Austin. The tapas were delicious and the Sunday evening happy hour is a great opportunity to sample a wide variety. The servers were attentive, knowledgeable, efficient and friendly. Overall a great experience!"

  • "I was looking for a place to resemble Barcelona for my anniversary and Barlata DID NOT disappoint. We made reservations and the manager even reached out see if there was anything further they could do to make the night special. Once I arrived she was at the door, as if she were waiting to seat us herself! The food as very authentic and so delicious. I have already recommended this place to everyone I've seen since. It is seriously a slice of Spain. We had 3 Tapas and a small Paella with a bottle of wine & dessert... and it did not break the bank at all. Seriously... do yourself a favor and GO! "

  • "When Barlata opened I was thrilled because there is not another restaurant like it. We had some friends in from Spain and took them there and the experience was not good. There were low hanging lights over the table that I hit my head on while trying to go to the bathroom/. The staff was over attentive and poured my remaining wine into my friends wine glass therefore mixing them. The paella had hardly any seafood in the dish and was a much smaller portion then the last five times I had been there. "

  • "Barlata is a delightful and relaxing place to spend a few hours. A varied brunch menu with something to please everyone. The tortillas were excellent as was the pincho and the crema catalana was a nice way to finish the meal. Service was first class. Highly recommended. "

  • "Barlata was fantastic. Our waitress was very helpful with recommendations, and very attentive throughout our dinner (she even brought fresh ice cubes for our Sangria half way through our meal). Food was excellent - nice mix of hot and cold tapas, as well as paella. Nice ambience. Highly recommend!"

  • "A hip visit to Spain in Austin! What could be better?"
    Dined on 5/30/2014
  • "Menu way too extensive for one outing. We figure we need about 4-5 meals to get through the list of things we wanted to try. Waitress was ver knowledgeable about the wine list which is always appreciated. She gave us in-depth answers instead of the "lot's of people order this" you would get from some restaurants (chains, really). Not sure I saw any wine not from Spain, which I also appreciate considering the menu."

  • "The location is great for finding a spot that isn't too busy. Food could have been better, but service is very good. It all depends on the dishes you choose!"

  • "If you're looking for authentic Spanish food and restaurant ambiance, this is very decent. The dishes are great if you want to sample a lot of different types of food. Very good bread, octopus, paella, and chorizo. Will definitely come back! Definitely recommend."

  • "Great service, ambience and very happy with the food. One vegetarian (me) in the party. We ordered a variety of cold and hot tapas, followed by a vegetarian and a chicken/seafood paella. Everything was very good. Highlights were the baby eggplant, olives, and the paella. The meat eaters also loved the lamb shanks. Also tried a variety of cocktails and the sangria, all of which were solid too."

  • "Barlata Tapas is not a place for quiet conversation. Indeed, one almost has to shout to be heard across the table. But the food is great with many different combinations of morsels. The food is basically Tapas (they have some paella and some more conventional - but boring - plates) so the idea is that people share and have lots of different items. Dishes come as they are ready and we ordered a few and then some more when we saw how hungry we were. This is normal for a Tapas restaurant and we love this type of dining. The wine list is full of nice Spanish wines including some from regions we do not normally see. We had a very nice Catalan wine that our waiter recommended."

  • "My wife and I have spent time in Spain and Barlata's food is outstanding and the wine selection is very good as well. Although not necessarily for kids, we have taken our 5 year old here occasionally. We're very pleased with this place and particularly the staff."
