Diner Reviews
  • "This was a magical trip back to my childhood days in Brussels. Specifically the amusement of steamed mussels in white wine, lemon and garlic, was perfectly executed and reminded me of Bruge. The roasted bone marrow was very nicely complimented by the tangy marmalade of shallots. I had the lamb chops cooked to a perfect medium rare with the crunch of the shaved daikon a great contrast to the tender lamb. I loved the English peas as they were large and firm and unmushy. My partner's rainbow trout was firm yet flaky and full of unfishiness. The service was welcoming, cheerful, unobtrusive and very attentive. We loved the atmosphere with a fantastic selection of eclectic art and great buzz of animated conversation without being to loud."

  • "Nice ambiance, good food and presentation but service as little sporadic. Did not matter if you are into your lady."

  • "Dinner was delicious, but start with the appetizers and save room for dessert. The fondue and the curry vegetables were great! Kit"

  • "A group of 3 of us went to Barbette for Restaurant Week. It was the first time for all of us, and we were impressed. The server accommodated a vegetarian request by substituting a portabello for meat in an entree, and it received raves from my friend. All of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals and will be back again soon."

  • "Very nice casual dining. Restaurant was full but could still easily carry on a conversation. We will return."

  • "I've been to Barbette multiple times for brunch, lunch and dinner and the food and service is always fabulous! Dishes are well balanced and presented beautifully. The decor reminds me of the old metro signs you see in Paris as well! Highly recommend!"

  • "First time at this place. Every single item from appetizers to dessert was amazingly good! Highly recommended!"

  • "I went with a friend to see a musician playing there. As more of our friends unexpectedly showed up, the staff was able and willing to rearrange and accommodate our growing group."

  • "Food was excellent - even outstanding! Steak au poivre and gnocchi especially. Fondue was tasty, but not particularly special. Server was helpful explaining the menu. Table was wobbly, some were simply too close together for an early dinner while it's still light out."

  • "Barbette is my favorite spot for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Cozy environment, healthy natural ingredient prepared quickly and with and excellent presentation. Noah our server was a delight - made my 3 month old Niko and I feel right at home!"

  • "Hadn't been to Barbette in a while and was so glad we chose this Uptown destination for our date night. The service was impeccable and the food was wonderful. The cocktails were exceptionally delicious and delivered with a smile. We are vegetarian and there is always something on the menu to suit us and it is never just a tossed off after thought or boring pasta dish. This place is still such a wonderful location to have a meal before a movie. A definite fave!"

  • "Fine dining at a surprisingly reasonable price. My wife and I enjoy it for date nights or meeting a friends. It's modern French food so expect creative cooking using local farms. The tasting menu was delightful, but we usually order from the menu. The chicken on the current menu is amazing. They're decent at pairing wines, but not exceptionally creative in that area. Not a place for a suit and tie, but that's what I like about it."

  • "We split salmon tartar which was 5 star +, I had chicken which was very good and my friends duck was 5 star +. It's a great place with unusual but excellent food and great wines!"

  • "As a frequent customer, I can vouch for all the best things about Barbette. Service is always friendly, the ambiance is lively, open yet cozy, and the food is top quality. Their brunch is, in my opinion, the best on Lake Street, but nothing is disappointing about the menu. Happy hour deals offer a decent selection too, and late nights are a great place for a quiet midnight snack."

  • "I've been to Barbette twice for brunch! They offer a limited Brunch menu but it is wonderful. I enjoyed the brie and herb omelet this time and it was so good. Everyone really enjoyed their meal as well. I like the portion size here. Most people are used to supersized portions but they make appropriate size food that has great flavor. It was pretty busy and our waitress seemed pretty flustered but everything came out quickly after drinks were served. I would recommend Barbette for Brunch!"

  • "Always fresh and different French inspired food. Desserts are always to die for, but salads are also yummy ! the décor is funky and fun"

  • "Everything on the special Restaurant Week menu was Fantastic! The beef bourgignone, especially, was exceptional! I hope Barbette adds that to their regular menu."

  • "The salmon and lentil meal was prepared well; however, I have had tastier salmon dishes. It would have been nice to have water other than tap. Tables were rather close together, which made it difficult to have a conversation. There was a pleasant atmosphere for dining."

  • "The food was excellent, small portions which is nice for me but my husband thought he needed more dessert plus he finished my salad and entree."

  • "Barbette is a great spot to go with friends for fine French dining and a neat atmosphere. The food is excellent and true to French cuisine. The environment is eclectic and comfortable, creating a pleasant dining experience. I did not have a drink while I was there, but there was a good variety of wine options, as well as other drinks. Also, the servers were friendly and still accommodated my group even though we were late for our lunch reservation. Overall, it was a fabulous time and I would love to go back again!"

  • "I was lucky enough to have lunch at Barbette for restaurant week, and I had the best time! I picked out a great french wine to pair with my delicious food, and then sat and sipped and ate in such a great environment. The music was spot on, my fellow diners were all having a great time, the food was good, my server was the sweetest guy in the world, and it was all enough to make me really feel as though I was sitting in a little French restaurant with hours to enjoy a meal. I will definitely be back!"

  • "Soup came out almost cold, the beef bourguinon was inedible!"
    Dined on 2/27/2014
  • "It all tasted quite good, but the portions are laughable. Beef Bourguignon was served in a very shallow bowl (read: plate), with two 1/2 inch cubes of lardon, and two equally small pieces of beef, teamed with one average fingerling potato and two 4 inch long, slender carrots halved lengthwise in a short puddle of beef broth. Our server spent nearly the whole time gazing into the service window, making it impossible to catch her attention for any reason. When another team member came to fill our water glasses, he saw my credit card out and ready, but did not notify the server. Unfortunate."

  • "Barbette is a nice, cute little restaurant with a great wait staff. The food was pretty good, although the portions were too small for my preference, I was still hungry when I left. But overall the food was good and we had a nice experience there."

  • "The food was wonderful, prepared with special tastes. Easily, the best paté I've ever had, for example. Will return with friends, for sure."

  • "Always liked Barbette but a recent lunch during Restaurant Week left us disappointed. Perhaps a $10 two course lunch isn't realistic when offering French beef stew. It was seriously chintzy with 3 of the smallest, tiniest pieces of meat. I mean when I make beef burgundy I cut at least 2x2" pieces. There was just a lot of good sauce with a few gourmet carrots, pearl onions and more lardons than beef. We got a very small piece of bread, no butter and the wine pour was terrible. As host, I was embarrassed in front of my guest, so I did not say anything to our nice server. If you can't serve more than a child's serving, then select another offering - perhaps the croque monsieur. I'll be back but not here for Restaurant Week."

  • "I took a friend to Barbette to celebrate her birthday. The food was wonderful, our server was very good and helpful. Overall I was very pleased."

  • "Every time I dine at Barbette I leave wondering why I don't come more often. It's such a city gem. The staff is incredibly friendly and attentive. I never once have an empty water glass, wine glass or coffee cup. And don't even get me started on the food. I came for restaurant week and still don't understand how that's a thing - the deals are so ridiculous. I dined with a friend and we got a salad, one of each entree, and the dessert. Everything was incredible. I'll definitely be back sooner than later."

  • "As always, we spent way more money than we planned to. We came for the $10 restaurant week deal, but ended up spending $50. It's such a relaxed, casual place and the food is so good we tend to forget ourselves and indulge. I'll still be back!"

  • "Service was great and dessert was especially abundant! We had the carrot cake ;-)"
    Dined on 2/24/2014
  • "The butternut squash soup didn't have much flavor, it was just kind of blah, it didn't even taste like squash. The Beef Bourguignon was just plain bad. I love Beef Bourguignon and have had it at Barbette before and it was superb (I came for it again) but it was so salty and the broth was so thin it was like Campbell's soup from a can and there was no red wine flavor at all. Also the beef was dry, chewy and fatty. The Cardamom Sour Cream Cake tasted like a dense not fully cooked muffin, the "Pistachio" ice cream was basically green vanilla, the only redeeming thing about the whole meal was the tablespoon serving of ginger shortbread crumble which was fantastic. Do better Barbette, this was a horrible meal."

  • "We had a late night reservation for a table to watch a band. I requested in my reservation a table with good view of the stage. Even though we were about 30min late for our table due to bad weather and driving conditions, they still held our table and it was the best one in the house for watching the show! We ordered snacks from the late night menu and the waiter suggested a really great wine. We had a great time, i will definitely come back for a full meal someday."

  • "Attentive and informative wait staff. Fun, delicious appetizers. The soup/salad courses were also excellent. My entree was lobster risotto, and I found it a little too rich. The risotto seemed overwhelmed by the very cheesy and salty sauce - perhaps a matter of taste. The dining experience overall was relaxed and unhurried. We felt that we were never rushed, and yet never neglected. We had a great bottle of wine for an extremely reasonable price. Dessert (beignets) was excellent. I would return, probably for appetizers and wine. I love that there is also a good selection of craft beer."

  • "Good service, nice atmosphere, a good lunch spot. We were disappointed after being blown away for a lunch last year, but we will be back."

  • "I've only been to Barbette for happy hour and Bastille Day, so I mostly had the appetizers. This time around we splurged and decided to get an appetizer along with dinner. The mussels were great, the beef tenderloin and lobster risotto was fantastic (I was still thinking about it the next day), and the drinks that we ordered were delicious. I highly recommend coming here when you're around Uptown!"

  • "My beau and I went recently and absolutely loved our experience there! I had the lobster risotto. Probably the best risotto I have ever had. He had the duck, which was also amazing. The server was so sweet and friendly. Great ambience and beautifully designed restaurant. Among the best I have been to!"
