A word from Barbacco
Barbacco is a modern trattoria that reflects the vibrant city life of San Francisco and offers a casual dining experience that delivers exceptional wines, personable service, and high quality food inspired by recipes from all regions of Italy. Barbacco looks sleek and urbane, with a welcoming feel. The 66-seat restaurant is fitted with a rich black marble bar for counter seating complimented by a bright yellow beverage case displaying coolers of wine on one side and the building’s original brick walls on the other. There are also dark grain walnut individual tables and smaller communal tables that can accommodate up to 6 people. The space is full of energy and infused with a convivial atmosphere where guests share tables with friends or new acquaintances. Reservations are welcome, just keep in mind most of our seating capacity is comprised of counter space and shared communal tables. We also save room everyday for smaller walk-in parties. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I have gone to Barbacco on multiple occasions-- after late work night for snack and drink, for dinner-- etc. It is always fun and always a total pleasure, good food, good service, great ambiance"

  • "We are local people and enjoy being able to traverse the small terrain between our SOMA home and barbacco. We went there quite a few times in 2011 - 2012 hoping they would get the kinks out. The bottom line is that everything is way too salt infused. I don't know if it is a case of chefs having thier palates blown out, or just some sort of misplaced insecurity. We took the leftovers home so we could dilute the oppressive saline with something more innocuous. I cannot believe you have not heard this criticism before. We will not be back, amd that makes me sad."

  • "As long as you don't mind sharing tables this is a great lunch place. Food is delicious and lots of options. A bit noisy but typical for lunch in FIDI"

  • "My wife and I are dinner here after a recommendation from a person we met up in NAPA. The food was very good. We were placed on a community table which was fine. We had some nice pasta dishes & some fine wine! The server was very good and I would definitely go back."

  • "I love Barbacco! The food is fantastic, the wait staff is superb! I took a friend who had never been and was visiting from Southern California! She just loved it. My husband and I love this restaurant and it's sister restaurant Perbacco. I definitely recommend these two restaurants. The only thing is you have to be prepared to share a table at Barbacco if you have a small party. That's the only thing that I am not too crazy about."

  • "I've been to Barbacco now a few times and it never disappoints. The food is delicious and the plates are fairly small, so if you go with a group that likes to share you get to try lots to things. Also, great wine."

  • "The food at Barbacco is always excellent and a good value considering the quality. As a nice touch, complimentary sparkling water is now offered, along with still. Service is friendly and efficient. A great option for lunch in the financial district."

  • "The food was great value and quality for the price. Portions were generous - we ordered too much. It would have been nice to be advised by the server. Late rez (9:15pm), server seemed ready to go home. Brought all appetizers (5 dishes) and second course (2 large pastas) all at once - too much for 3 to deal with. Wine was amazing- la stoppa rosso, delicious!!!! Bday but no dessert. I think with the right suggestions, this restaurant could be top of the line. I will check back and give it a second chance."

  • "This is a casual, group oriented restaurant with a killer wine list. This was a first time here. Good service, good food and great wines, with a large portion of their thoughtfully constructed list being by the glass."

  • "Excellent food. Try the orchette pasta with Kale salad. two excellent menu items. The hostess was very attentive and she moved us from a communal table to a table for two in the back of the restaurnt which is not as noisey as the front of the house. WE definitely are going back"

  • "The hostess, server, and manager were all rude to our group for no good reason. The food was incredible, but if I ever go back I will have to seriously consider whether or not it is worth interacting with pretentious staff. The restaurant also has a hard time accommodating groups larger than six because of how the tables are set up. Furthermore, if you come in with a group of less than six you may have to share a table with another small group."

  • "Barbacco is my go to place when I meet friends for lunch. The usual order will be brussel sprouts, polpette and orrechiete. My ginger limonata is just right, not too sweet and not too tart. For our dessert I go with my favorite which panna cotta."

  • "This is my second time at Barbacco...I think the food is great but the service was even better...Our waiter was fantastic and he took really good care of us. Only thing I am not too thrilled about and you should be aware is that you may have to share tables with other customers or sit at the bar which can be cramped. We sat at the end of the bar which was ok"

  • "Try the nduja and the brussel sprouts. Honestly the best brussel sprouts I've ever had. I might start picking up to-go orders for lunch, since Barbacco is so close to my office."

  • "Super energetic, vibrant atmosphere that was perfect for our group of 4. We were 30 min early for our reservation and were seated immediately although it seemed packed. Our group of 4 shared a table with one couple who were also pretty mellow and hearing wasn't a problem. Brussel sprouts were, in my opinion, amazing. Tender on the inside, burnt and crispy on the outside with the perfect level if tang and seasoning. Cornish game was also delicious and the perfect sized meal. Everyone else seemed equally satisfied with their meals, although the risotto wasn't finished much but I didn't ask why. Service was great, prices we're ask expected for a nice meal in the city. Heads up: beer and wine only.... May have said it somewhere but I missed it."

  • "Barbacco is my go to for business and friend lunches in the city. I always get the same thing, the meatballs and the brussel sprouts. I am sure everything else is good too, but I wouldn't know."

  • "Everything about Barbacco was outstanding!! Service at the counter was attentive and friendly. Menu has a wide variety of items that are all reasonably priced. Although they are touted as small plates, the portions are very generous and definitely enough for two diners to share. Be sure to order something from each section of the menu, you will not be disappointed. Reservations a must."

  • "for dessert! We went for late lunch on Friday afternoon. We were on the cusp of lunch and dinner and there were only 4 or 5 other couples, so the noise level wasn't a problem. The service was also warm and friendly! I convinced my friend that the brussel sprouts are EPIC and he had to taste them for himself. Oh, you don't like brussel sprouts? Try them anyway! :) If you don't like them, I'll swing by to help you finish.~ ;) We shared the polpette on braised chard. We topped off the afternoon by indulging in the nemesis cake (flourless chocolate yum) and butter scotch-chocolate crunch gelato (second best to the sprouts). The last Friday in February calls for celebration so I opted for an Italian sparkling. Certainly a magical afternoon!"

  • "I have regularly patronized Barbacco for years, bringing many clients and friends there many who had never been before. It has reliably been a cut above in food and service from many competitors in the neighborhood, particularly for lunch. This last visit was appalling. Rushed, ungracious service clearly focused only on turning the table. Worse, the minestra had no discernible salt, a few sad lonely and unlucious beans, and large hunks of overcooked and mushy carrots and (WAY too much) celery, the entire tasteless thing made worse, not better, by huge graceless sheets of kale that were virtually impossible to eat with a spoon. Sadly, I am not inclined to return."

  • "tasty, interesting small plates. wish we had not had to sit at the bar (wanted a table for two not a communal table) but service was excellent."
    Dined on 2/27/2014
  • "Wonderful food but the noise level is beyond belief. Not a soft surface in the entire place. We sat at the bar and had to lean into each other to be heard."
    Dined on 2/27/2014
  • "I will preface this by saying my group was there for lunch during the work week. The waitress began the experience by asking if we were in a rush. We said no given we had an hour for lunch. Well it took us 2 hours to get through lunch. 20 minutes to wait on dessert. It wasn't that crowded either. Bottom line; if you are not in a rush for lunch or don't work for a living then the slow service won't bother you and you'll have more time to savor the yummy pastas."

  • "I've been here many times for lunch but this was my first dinner experience. Service and wine list was great. We ordered the Brussels sprouts which were tasty but over the top with salt. Couldn't finish the dish. Both of us ordered the fish which was tasty but swimming in more butter than we preferred. So i expect I'd go back for lunch but not for a while."

  • "Repeat visit. Still good as it was when I last ate here over 2 years ago. Fried Brussels sprouts, antipasto grilled veggies, steak dish, lemon square dessert. Excellent food. Very noisy - hard to talk because everyone is shouting above the noise to be heard so it is impossible to have a good convesation."
    Dined on 2/20/2014
  • "The food here is reliably good and the option of selecting a smaller size portion is very appealing. The noise level is pretty high, though not deafening. However, for people with some hearing impairment, it is not a great location."

  • "Pressure was on to find a spot to meet old friends for drinks/light dinner. Problem was it was Valentines Day! Absolutely impossible to book a reservation anywhere and EVERYONE was demanding those godawful "fix prix" dinners @ $100 a head...sans alcohol, but wait the ladies get a rose! Does anyone like those? Note to restaurant owners.......serve your regular menu and offer a glass of prossecco or chocolates with the tab! Anyway....Barbacco had an early reservation available, and I took the plunge. Adorable staff, fabulous foodie place, something for everyone and great wine list! We had a great evening and can't wait to return!"

  • "The food is always great, solid wine list. It's a nice/ modern space. One thing that drives me crazy is the community seating. I was just there with a table of four and asked to not be is community seating if possible. The host said they would sit us at the community table but wouldn't sit anyone next to us. Half way into the meal....they seat two more at our table. It's just tough to have a business meeting with other diners six inches away...."

  • "i went at 830pm on a monday night so there was a seat between us and the people next to us at the counter (which surprisingly i had to request). the noise level was more than manageable at that time which was nice. the service was more than attentive, the food came out fast and it was really good. fried olives with short rib filling were flavorful and a nice surprise. the meatballs are always amazing. the burrata crostini was lacking a bit in flavor and the texture was strange. the orecchiette with sausage was good but i'd get the farrotto next time as that to me had more flavor."
    Dined on 2/10/2014
  • "This place offers a good variety of Mediterranean dishes, which are in terms of their size just right The service was good, but pay attention when you come in smaller groups, they might sear you together with a different group"

  • "Love the ambiance, great service and wait staff. Food was disappointing. Great efforts - but overly salty and not well explained on the menu. I ordered the salad with tuna and it was literally an overly salted, oily tuna salad on a bed of greens. Disappointed. In the past I've had great experiences here though... Perhaps it was an off day?.."

  • "Barbacco is one of my most favorite restaurants in San Francisco. The staff is friendly and nice, and the food is good and reasonable. I like their pork ragu and chicken thigh. It is a good place for a date, get-together with friends, or anniversary dining. Barbacco can be quite noisy when you go to the busiest time, so I recommend you go a little early. (Make sure to make a reservation!)"

  • "My friend and I always meet here for lunch and it's a bit of a joke that we always order the same thing, but it's sooo good!. The brussel sprouts are the best we've had anywhere and our two favorite pork dishes (sandwich for her and Paccheri for me) are always wonderful. This time I broke out of the mold and tried the Peposo (beef stew) instead and it was excellent too. Now I have to go back soon to have my Paccheri ... It is quite loud during the lunch rush, so if that bothers you, this is not the place for you. We always manage to carry on a conversation though and the noise definitely does not stop us. And the service is great - everyone is so friendly. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "The lasagna is a must have as are the brussels sprouts. Unfortunately, there were not many gluten free and dairy free options for our friend with food sensitivities."

  • "We ordered two salads and two pasta dishes. The arugula salad was very salty, and the chick pea salad was very heavy with olive oil. The pasta with ragu had perfect pasta but the ragu was not rich and flavorfull as a ragu should be. The other pasta had a meat sauce that featured dry braised meat."
